Sox official: Nothing imminent on Teixeira

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff December 11, 2008 12:21 PM

LAS VEGAS -- According to one Red Sox official, as of this morning nothing was close on Mark Teixeira. The Sox are one of four teams currently strongly involved in talks for the free agent first baseman.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation here and will let you know if anything changes.

  1. Teixeira is our guy. Let's sit with Boras, finalize the deal today... heck, get both of his Georgia Tech clients in Sox units by the end of the day. They need to get back into a room with Texas, to get Salty to Boston to complete the catching situation there.

Also need to figure out the rotation too. There always needs to be a back-up plan there. You start the season with Josh, Dice, Wake, Jon and ???. Could it be Clay, Justin, Michael (Bowden)? I think they would be better suited letting Smoltz start the year in the rotation, and if injury hits anybody, you allow your trio of youngsters attempt to fill the hole. Junichi cannot be slated as that guy just yet.

I'd take a year on Smoltz... i think he's a gamer, and can really be a bargain.

  1. Definetly need Teixeira. Why wouldn't they pay him 22.5 million a year when they are paying JD Drew 15 million a year? Seems like a no brainer to me Teixeira is younger and head and shoulders better than JD Drew in the field and at the plate. This should be the easiest decision to make.

  1. Smoltz would also be a great tutor for the youngster pitchers, ala Schilling

  1. You don't make decisions like that Peter. You don't say we paid this guy this much in the past, so obviously this other guy is worth this much. C'mon, that's just dumb.

  1. Sign Tex now, before we loose him, Get Lowe or Smoltz signed and resolve the catching situation and lets get ready to play some ball.

  1. Sign Tex to 7 or 8 years with club options at the 9 & 10 year marks. Give Tek a 2 year deal that will give the Sox some flexibility and time to figure out the long term catcher plan. Get Youk inked on a contract that will keep him around for a while. Trade Lowell to the highest bidder and sign a veteran pitcher like a Smoltz to give depth to the rotation in case of an injury etc. or a falling out like Bucholz had.
