Report: Yankees may be in on Teixeira

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff December 23, 2008 02:45 PM

Has Mark Teixeira's day of decision finally arrived? Reports are starting to trickle out that free-agent slugger will announce his destination today, and while one report suggests the Red Sox will win the sweepstakes, a more recent one indicates that none other than the New York Yankees have suddenly become aggressive in their pursuit of the 28-year-old first baseman.

The Washington Times website reported early this afternoon that a major league baseball source told reporter Thom Loverro that there will be announcement today regarding Teixeira's future. Here is the segment that should intrigue Red Sox fans:

While the source declined to discuss specifics, there are strong indications that the Red Sox will announce that they have landed the highly-coveted slugger, who has been courted this offseason by several major league clubs, including the Angels, Orioles and Nationals.

But at a little past 2 p.m., Sports Illustrated.com's Jon Heyman wrote the following on the site's Hot Stove News Tracker:

The Yankees are in deep discussions with Teixeira, in what is now an attempt to beat out the rival Red Sox for Teixeira's services. The Teixeira sweepstakes is considered to be a three-team battle with the Nationals still involved. However, the Yankees' talks have turned serious in recent hours, as the team appears to be stepping up its attempts to lure the free-agent slugger to New York.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Globe's Nick Cafardo reports that league sources told him that the Nationals and Red Sox appear to be the finalists, pending a last-minute offer from the Yankees (which, if Heyman's report is to be believed, may have already happened).

Cafardo says the Nationals are now offering nine years at $180 million, while the Red Sox have apparently not altered their offer of eight years at approximately $170 million. While the Red Sox' offer is at a higher annual value, the Nationals' offer of an extra year could be a factor.

This morning, an ESPN.com report bylined by Peter Gammons and Buster Olney suggests Teixeira's decision is "seemingly imminent," but does not offer a strong indication as to which team among the Red Sox, Nationals, Orioles, and Yankees that he will choose:

. . . The Baltimore Orioles' negotiations for the free-agent first baseman appear dormant. The Yankees, on the other hand, continue to review their options, preparing for the possibility -- however real it is -- that Teixeira might make them an offer that they couldn't refuse.

The Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals continue to be the most likely destinations for Teixeira, executives involved in the process believe.

The Yankees made an initial offer to Teixeira, a proposal not close to the others, before they withdrew their bid, and they have maintained contact with the agent, Scott Boras.

Stay tuned throughout the day for more updates.

Nick Cafardo and Adam Kilgore of the Globe staff contributed to this report.

  1. The Moonie Times, as usual, can't get anything right:
"Last week, Red Sox owner John Henry told reporters that the team was no longer pursuing the player . . . ."
    *****************************************************************************
Henry NEVER said they were "no longer pursuing" him. He said it looked like they were going to lose the auction. Its not surprising that someone who would take a paycheck from Rev. Moon wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

  1. Let's not get nuts and start slobbering all over this guy... if the Sox don't get him, they don't get him. I still like Lowell at 3rd.

  1. Oh, good - I was afraid I wouldn't hear or see the name "Teixeira" today......

  1. If they are successful in landing Tex, could they move Youk to third and trade Mike Lowell, $, and other considerations/minor leaguers to the Padres for Peavey?

  1. "Last week, Red Sox owner John Henry told reporters that the team was no longer pursuing the player..."

That is not what Henry actually said. Misleading reporting on the Times' part, making Henry out to be some sort of liar. Henry said that the Sox would "not be a factor" based specifically on Boras' claims of higher offers, and the presumption (encouraged by Boras) that Teixeira would go to the highest bidder.

Henry didn't make his millions by being bluffed out of good hands. And the Sox are holding a straight flush here.

  1. It will be hard to warm up to this guy if he comes to Boston. He's a mercenary and won't get the love that Pedroia, Papelbon, Lowell (who may get traded because of this guy), and Youk get.

Posted by Joethedrunk December 23, 08 01:02 PM
  1. Lowell's not going to SD. They're looking to chop salary and a $12m 3b is not a way to do that.

We'll have to wait until spring to see where Lowell will end up. He'll have to prove he's healthy to any takers.

  1. Brian - as widely reported, Peavy does not want to come to AL. He is quite happy pitching in the offensively weaker NL. Additionally, any trade for him would require way too many prospects or prospects of way too high of a value. The Padres demands have been absolutely unrealistic.

And I hope Tex/Boras just pull the darn trigger already. Am so sick of the daily will he or won't he. If he goes with the Nats he can depend on having 9 years of uneventful Octobers watching the playoffs from his sofa. Wonder if that extra $10M is worth it.

  1. People will warm up to the guy the second he hits a homer for this team. Don't kid yourself. I guess Manny wasn't a mercenary either, right?

Posted by Dan December 23, 08 01:27 PM
  1. Joethedrunk, how can you say it will be hard to warm up to him, and that he's a mercenary, yet you use the word love and papelbon in the same sentence? Papelbon has been on the record saying he will set the benchmark of being the highest paid closer in the game.

  1. Joe - we embrace all our players if they produce. If there are more than 2 teams willing to give him basically the same money, why not? It not like he demanded they give him 20 mil - he will be loved here, ans long as he is not the next Jack Clark.

    Posted by opk3 December 23, 08 01:45 PM
  1. Hey Joethedrunk. The Moment Tex starts hitting 30- 40 homers a year and drive in more than 100 runs everyone will love him. Just look at Manny he was an A-hole and boston supported him until the end

Maybe he doesn't want that love and just wants to play ball...It is that kind of sentiment that makes players "not" want to come here because crazed fan boys devour these guys with - follow them to team hotels, fawn over them at restaurants, etc.....It drove Manny to the brink and I don't blame him.Leave these guys alone why dontcha.....

  1. How does adding an extra guaranteed year making it 9 years 180million or 8 years 170 million make any difference at all. Are you kidding me if that actually makes a difference? Oh but I guess after making $170 million plus endorsements that that 1 extra year of guaranteed $ might just save him and his family from homelessness. This guys and agents have no clue. Most people cant afford to live anymore and these jackasses have been dragging this out for months just showing how greedy they are. Bottom line is if you want to play for Boston choose boston. I am sure $170 milllion will provide for you. If you want to play for the Nationals sign wwith them please. You will do fine financially as well. Jys get this over with,

  1. The Yankees do NOT want Teixeira.......If they wanted him, this would have ended last week. NY is NOT your competition. They want Manny..

    Send Manny to the Yanks
    Keep VTek
    I don't want Lowe
    Keep Lowell
    Get rid of Lugo, somehow
Pick up a new starting pitcher

  1. This could have ended long ago. The Yanks signed CC and got all the press so Boras and the Sox want to trump the press time and that is why the Yanks got involved. Sox will get Tex and we the fans will open our arms to him and hope for a little more than the Wild Card.

Wake me up when it's over.

Posted by EdA December 23, 08 03:08 PM
  1. As I mentioned yesterday, it is not about dollars and years - it's about including an opt-out clause - something the Sox will not do. Boras will want him to be able to be a free agent in 3 years at age 31.

Since the Yankees will offer an opt out - as I mentioned - he will end up going to the New York.

Posted by Lee Jacobs December 23, 08 03:10 PM
  1. Let the Yankee's invest 9 years of over 20,000,000 for him.......thats perfect...Can you say Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, Jason Giambi, AROD....etc. They continue to sign players to rediculous contracts, then get stuck with them....let this be another....With the way they are spending, if they arent in first place half way through the year....can you hear the front office down there?
The Sox presented a great offer, if he wants it....great...if not....DONT GET INTO A BIDDING WAR!!! Let him go.

Posted by steven December 23, 08 03:12 PM
  1. I don't care where he plays. He is being represented by the biggest snake in the business. He will not come to Boston because of the love of the game. He will go the city that gives his agent Scott B the biggest payday

Posted by Darth Vadar December 23, 08 03:16 PM
  1. Chad, you, Jon Heyman at SI and other media types do realize that by posting endless speculation, you're doing Boras' job for him, don't you? Let's go back to reporting news, not rumors. The Boston Globe shouldn't be confused with the Enquirer. Even the Inside Track at the Herald does less rumor-mongering.

  1. Lowell had hip surgery you morons.
He will be virtually useless at third this year.
    As Bo Jackson.
You DON'T come back from hip surgery.
We got outflanked by the Yankees. Now, just like the Yankees did over the last eight years, the Red Sox will get old and irrelevant right before our eyes. And all the while, everyspring we'll talk about what Lowell, and Papi and Veritek USED to do. And we won't replace them with younger studs who can do it now. And BTW, you CANNOT win a title without two big bomber bats.

and oh, btw, you CANNOT win a world series without at least two big power threats.

  1. Stupid Globe and all the other follow-the-pack sports "journalists" basically just guessing Tex was coming to Boston. Why do they doubt the obviously sincere words of Henry, who said last week doesn't look like RS will be the team? All they do is quote nameless sources, who are also guessing. All to stretch out this story. I'm personally glad he's not coming here, as I am more than happy with the way our corner infielders play (fingers crossed Lowell is healthy). This team needs a catcher, outfielder, possibly a shortstop and another pitcher. Now let's get serious about that.

  1. Thank God!!!

180 Millon for 8 Years. We'll look back on this in 4 years, saying "Thank God we did not get Mark." I like the Soxs approach on contracts, (for the most part) no more then 4 year. Remember, the Soxs did not have to buy a World Series (Oh, I'm sorry! 2 World Series). Once again, I look at this as a great day in Red Sox history!!!!!!! I mean this, THANK YOU!

    Posted by GreatSave31 December 23, 08 04:33 PM
  1. Yanks got outwitted by John Henry again. We drove up the price, the Globe helped by saying we were front runners, and the Yanks had to overpay. And they can't trade him either haha (nice no-trade clause Boras, you owed us one for overpaying Varitek the last four years). Madoff and Boras screwing over 5th Ave just in time for the Macy's day parade...

  1. You Red Sox fans are a joke. All of a sudden you're sickened by the Yankees spending so much when the Red Sox were willing to spend a little over a million less.....and of course still came up short. Not to mention what you paid for your Japanese hurlers. Also, now for many of you it's who cares..Teixiera isn't that great anyway...he'll be on the disabled list most of the time.
You'll always be a bunch of jealous cry babies with no class no matter how many third place finishes are in your future!

Posted by Conn Yankeee December 23, 08 05:23 PM
  1. It's not that I'm mad at John and Theo because the Yankees just took the three best players off the market.

It's not that I'm mad at John and Theo because they wouldn't spend a few extra million to get Teixeria.

I'm absolutely furious at John and Theo because a team in our division is getting exponentially better through free agency, while another team is suddenly now a power in the division (thankfully the O's are barely a team at all). We're not going to worry about getting another second place this year - we might be fighting for third. I don't care what they do, so long as they find a way to make our team better. Besides a couple of relievers, the ownership group has sat stagnant. Stagnancy is never good for a team with two other World Series contenders in the division.
