Teixeira meets with the Yankees

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff December 5, 2008 11:25 AM

The New York Times reported Friday morning on its website that New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman met with Mark Teixeira in Washington. Agent Scott Boras was present.

Tyler Kepner sums up the Yankees' current free agent stance:

The Yankees’ priority is pitching, and Cashman met with Teixeira at the request of the agent Scott Boras, who also represents starters Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez and outfielder Manny Ramirez. Boras was present at the meeting with Teixeira, who was visiting family in Maryland.

The Yankees would love to add Teixeira, a switch-hitter with power who has won two Gold Gloves. But it is unlikely they could sign both Teixeira and Sabathia, to whom they offered a six-year, $140 million deal on Nov. 14.

  1. I hope Teixeira goes to the Yankee's, we don't need him here. What, because a declining David Ortiz, opens his big mouth, we're going to go out and spend a rididulous amount of money for Teixeira, when we are all set with our infield. Mikey Lowell will come back as good as he was in 2007. It's not like he had a hip replacement. People are making this injury out to be more than it is. Chase Utley had the same kind of surgery, and are people saying he will never be the same.........no! Keep Mikey, David, keep your mouth shut, thought Mikey was your friend, and forget about Teixeira!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Will someone please tell me the yankees will not sign CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira as well as D Lowe. They have 80 million off the books from last year

  1. We'd be crazy not to sign Teixeira! He's the only sure thing in this year's free agent market. Besides the obvious benefit of being in the lineup, we'd be denying his services to the Yanks and Angels. Go Theo!

  1. THE POOR, POOR YANKEES !!!!! Ain't got no money !! Don't buy it for a nano second.....Brand new stadium.....Got rid of millions in dead salary.......I hope Theo and his cohorts are not numbed by this ploy....on top of that, ManRam can DH and could "concentrate" on just hitting and be back in his old neighborhood....I can hear the Steinie trio now....Brian Cashman is a cool cat !! I hope we are cooler.

  1. Why is it unlikely the Yankess could sign both Sabathia & Teixeira? Approximately $50M additional per year, offset by not having to pay Giambi & Petite--I'm not sure of their salaries, but combined they had to be in $35M range last year. Add in all the increased revenue from the new stadium, and the Yankees' bottom line wouldn't suffer a bit.

  1. The Yankees need him more than we do. We have Youk, Papi and Lowell and everybody will just be fine this year. Mikey will bounce back and be another WS MVP!

We were 2 runs from the WS and that was with half the team hurt. Let's not panick people!!!!!

  1. This shouldn't be a shocker. . . it's not like Tex wasn't going to meet with all of his top suitors. Now let's just hope he decides to sign with US! Haha!

  1. Boras: Hey, Cash, just returning your call. I'm in DC, got Tex with me. Let's take a meeting!

Cashman: You know, you're not on 'Entourage'. We're the Yankees - we don't 'take' meetings. We meet. We hold talks. And we already HAVE an overpriced marquee Boras client. You know who we mean. We have enough drama around here. So I'm warning you again - don't even START peddling Manny.

Boras (whispered): C"mon, my boy's right here. Don't dis me in front of him. (full voice) That's great, Cash! Tex is VERY interested in the Yankees, too.

Cashman: Yeah, we're just Scrooge McDuck's swimming pool full of money to you, aren't we?

Boras (turns his back to Tex): Hey, you at least want to make sure the Sox pay full price for him, don't you? We're all on the same page here.

Cashman: All right, all right. I'll give you ten minutes at the hotel bar, so you can tell the media we met. But when we get to Vegas, it's Le Cirque for the whole office and it's YOUR tab.

  1. Mister Snitch is right on. Just as we are hearing that the Sox are talking to Burnett and Sabathia to drive up their prices for other teams including the Yankees, Couldn,t the Yankees be talking to Texeira to drive up the price for the Red Sox?

  1. I love how people are saying we don't need teixeira cause we have youk, lowell, and papi.....teix is a far superior ball player to all three of them!!!! why would we not want to improve our team if we could!!! don't get me wrong i love the three guys we have now, but if we could sign teixeira and trade lowell, we'd be a much better ball club!!!

  1. Don't be surprised if the Spankees sign Teix. They cleared over $80M by getting rid of Giambi, Pavano, Abreu, Mussina retiring, etc. They could pay CC, AJ, and Teix and still have a smaller payroll than last year.
