Varitek to decline salary arbitration from Red Sox

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff December 7, 2008 08:25 PM

LAS VEGAS - A source close to Sox catcher Jason Varitek confirmed that Varitek would decline salary arbitration from the Red Sox before the midnight deadline. This will allow Varitek to pursue his free-agent market without being tied exclusively to the Red Sox for the upcoming season.

Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, who was due in here late tonight, always believes he can create a market for a player. While the market for Varitek doesn't appear to be vast at this point, Boras understands it's still early in the process and there are teams - the Tigers, Marlins, Dodgers to name three, who could use an experienced catcher.

Declining arbitration certainly doesn't mean Varitek, who hit .220, can't continue to negotiate with Boston, but accepting arbitration would have insured he'd be a Red Sox for another season and he could have continued to negotiate on something long term. Varitek is coming off a four-year, $40 million deal and would likely have made at least the $10 million per year he earned in 2008 if he went to arbitration.

The Red Sox were also expecting that right-hander Paul Byrd would decline arbitration.

  1. If Scott Boras is actually able to turn Teck into a Manny, i would be shocked. What is this turning into?Teck, you better than this, just accept arbitration instead of trying to drive your salary up, because its going to bite you in the a$$ when the Red Sox pull some wicked solid catcher out of their farm system and you left struggling between getting paid nothing by the tigers, or even less from the marlins. Maybe you'll end up in LA with Manny, and you, Manny, and Scott can head out for overpriced drinks, spending your salary drowning continuous losses away with some spiced rum Teck is the good guy, and the captain of the Sox. He is always hustling and trying to help the Bo Sox going strong, so if Scott Boras can make the pretty crummy catcher try and chase the money, then he will out do himself.

  1. SURPRISE... Varitek unwilling to get paid MORE than he is worth with arbitration.. he wants to get MORE years as well. His character is taking a beating with his off the field activites and now pushing for MORE and MORE.... I think things are NOT going to end up well for him.

  1. Any chance the Globe could eliminate the punctuation checking? The constant, and incorrect, Invalid (1) error is pretty aggravating.

I'd prefer an idiot check instead, but in the meantime please drop the punctuation police. It's terrible.
