Where they stand on Teixeira

Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff December 10, 2008 11:21 AM

With CC Sabathia off the board, the focus of the Hot Stove season shifts to Mark Teixeira, the top hitter on the market who is highly coveted by several teams, including the Red Sox.

By all indications, the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Yankees, and even the Nationals are interested in the free agent first baseman. The Globe's Nick Cafardo predicts Teixeira could command upward of $25 million per season when all is said and done. Teixeira’s agent, Scott Boras, is thought to be seeking a deal somewhere in the range of 10 years and $200 million.

What follows is a team-by-team roundup of the latest Teixeira-related rumors:

  • Red Sox: It’s no secret the Red Sox have made signing Teixeira their top offseason priority, and a few officials from other teams have predicted he’ll end up in Boston, but things have been quiet on that front. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has preached the importance of staying patient, though with Sabathia off the market it’s possible there could be movement on Teixeira in the near future. In the last day, baseball sources confirmed to the Globe's Tony Massarotti that Teixeira is the apple of Epstein’s eye and that the Red Sox have told at least one agent that their offense could be headed for trouble. According to Massarotti, last night it was believed that Epstein was meeting with Boras. FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal also reported that the Sox and Boras were having a face-to-face meeting last night, presumably to discuss Teixeira. ESPN's Peter Gammons said on an Internet radio show (on the Sawxheads.com web site) that the Red Sox would be willing to go as high as an 8-year deal for Teixeira.
  • Angels: Team owner Arte Moreno has said re-signing Teixeira is his top priority, and he reiterated that in an interview with SI.com’s Jon Heyman Tuesday night. "Teixeira's my guy,'' Moreno said. "There are obviously other people we like. But he's our main target.'' The LA Times reported that the Angels have not yet made a formal offer to Teixeira and have not yet met face-to-face with Boras at the winter meetings. However, GM Tony Reagins said the fact the Angels have not yet made an offer should not be misinterpreted. "There are open lines of communication, and we understood going in that the process would take some time," Reagins said. "So this is not unexpected. . . . At the appropriate time, we will make an offer." According to the LA Times, the Angels appear reluctant to go beyond seven years on a contract for Teixeira.
  • Orioles: While they certainly would not seem to be the frontrunner in the hunt, the Orioles -- Teixeira’s hometown team -- are at least testing the waters. Orioles GM Andy MacPhail told the LA Times that he is scheduled to meet with Boras before the end of the winter meetings. He also said the team has discussed contract parameters but has made no formal offer to Teixeira, who is originally from Severna Park, Md. and grew up an Orioles fan.
  • Nationals: The last-place Nats have to be considered long shots, but that doesn’t mean they won’t give it a try. Team sources told the Washington Post the Nationals are considering a significant offer for Teixeira. One Nationals official acknowledged to the Washington Post the unlikelihood the team could land Teixeira: "I don't feel real good about our chances," he said, but added, "You can't win if you don't play."
  • Yankees: After having landed CC Sabathia earlier today, might the Yankees still have room to go after Teixeira? The Yankees have the financial resources to do it, but finding another bat might not be their top priority. Even with Sabathia in the rotation, the Yankees might still prefer to try to sign another quality starting pitcher like A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe (who, according to some reports, has a four-year, $66 million offer on the table from the Yankees), or Ben Sheets.

What does Tony Massarotti mean when he says "the offense could be headed for trouble"??

  1. If the Natgionals offer 8 years and 170 million then I think we've got our first baseman of the future. Picking up an Adam Dunn with him, packaging them in a lineup with Zimmerman and "O baby, print them Series tickets".

  1. Ortiz may be all done.....................and who knows about Lowell?

  1. Sox need a BIG bat to protect Ortiz--that iswhat Maz is getting at.

  1. I think that was meant to be if they didnt sign teixeira.......not that I agree with it.
But he would certainly help. But at what cost? 10 yrs 200 million doesnt appear to be enough now, are we looking at 10 years 250 million?

  1. It means that Lowell, Ortiz, Drew and Varitek if he's back are getting older and injury prone and likely have seen their best days. This team needs 35-125 guy badly.

  1. OK, Mike M. Fair question "what does Massarotti mean "the offense is headed for trouble"  but my question is why the heck is Theo telling agents that?  Won't it result in holding out for higher prices?  I know the agents aren't stupid and they can see the hole in the middle of Boston's batting order but why would he be calling extra attention to it?

  1. I don't get it. On a day when the Yankees are asking the taxpayers of the city of New York for an addition $350 MILLION DOLLARS to finish building their stadium, they can somehow go out and afford to drop $160 million for Sabathia and maybe another $200 million for Texeira. It is a CRIME that no major media organization is reporting on this disparity.

  1. I think all this talk about 200-250 million dollar contracts is crazy. Sure the Sox could use a guy of Tex's talent but so could ever other team in baseball. I think the Sox should encourage the Yankees to spend a quarter billion on him and what for Lars Anderson to mature into the slugging 1st baseman everyone thinks he will be. Baseball America list Anderson as the Sox top prospect and is about 1 year away...

  1. The offense is probably OK now, assuming Lowell comes back and is productive. But Lowell, Ortiz, certainly Varitek are all on the back nine of their careers. Lowell and Ortiz may be gone after 2010, and Bay may be gone after 2009. One area that is not discussed enough is the leadoff spot. We all thought, or at least hoped Ellsbury would be the answer there, and he may very well be, but he has to improve and lock down that job. Texiera would give the Sox a Manny-like rock in the middle of the lineup to build around.

  1. I hope that we get him because are offence is in big trouble because no manny, ortiz is not what he used to be, lowell is done and so is teck. so without him all we have is pedroia, youk, and bay

  1. Relax, whatever Theo or "Any Baseball Source" tells any media member take with less than a grain of salt - they aren't about to tell the whole world what their actual strategy is going to be

  1. I think doing anything other than assuming that either A: the report about said to an agent is incorrect, or B: giving Theo the benefit of the doubt at this point is ridiculous. I trust Theo 100%. Always willing to make the tough calls and think long term.

  1. It seems that the Red Sox know more about the seriousness of Mike Lowell's injury now, than was known during the playoffs. I would not be surprised if we do not see Mike for the beginning of next season which is why Theo is so interested in Teixera. If Lowell does come back healthy and we do get Teixeira, then what tough problem to have. lol

  1. What "hole" are we talking about in the middle of the lineup?? 2 through 6 are Pedroia, Ortiz, Youkilis, Bay, Drew. There are about 25-28 teams that would kill to have such a "hole"

  1. The Red Sox need Tex as bad as the Yankees needed C.C.. Let us not kid ourselves... The Red Sox in recent years have shown that they have what it takes to go toe to toe with the Yankees when it's time to spend some money.. Well the first salvo has been thrown.. Red Sox Nation has to answer back in a big way!!

Posted by Konsumers December 10, 08 04:19 PM
  1. Now that C.C is with the Yankees, the Sox need to do whatever they can to go sign Teixeria. I guess the Sox also need Pitching as well....and i heard D-Lowe might be heading to the Bronx too. I think the Yanks has gone NUTS!! because the way they played last season.

  1. too, too expensive... Teixeira is out of his mind... his wishful, future contract is as bad as the internet bubble.

First off, cities usually take the bulk of the bill when building new stadiums to entice teams to stay in their city. Why? Because sports teams, especially the Yankees, bring in HUGE amounts of money into the city. Second, it's not like Sabathia is geting the $160 million all at once. They get pay checks every week just like me and you.

  1. too expensive is right... but he would be a definite immediate threat and someone to build around for the future of the Bo-sox

  1. Teixeira would be a great addition to our team, a star player not looking to be in the lime light. Manny was an awesome hitter, but not very good with the media. Has anyone thought if Manny did not change agents he would still be here. Boras new if Manny took the 2 years option then he wasn;t in line for a payday. Manny I believe was guided into asking out of our city. But at the end of the day wo got Jason Bay a silent leader who plays defense and can hit. Adding Teixeira would solidify our line-up for years to come. And by the way Big Papi isn't on a downside, he played hurt last year. If protected like he once was watch his number explode.

  1. You should quit writting about sports if you think Teixeira is "the best hitter on the market". Wow have you missed the boat.

Posted by paul December 10, 08 07:10 PM
  1. I'm a little behind in my Red Sox reading so I'm sure I've missed it. Where exactly would Teixeira be playing in the field if we were to sign him? First base? Where does the leave Youk? If he moved to third, where does that leave Lowell? Traded? Has anyone talked about how this would all work?

Posted by Corey December 10, 08 08:34 PM
  1. Paul I think that is being said without any regard to Manny, cuz Manny isnt on the market as far as Boston is concerned

  1. Tex fits in so many ways. Class guy. Switch hitter like Tito likes. This sticks it to Yankees too. They have old, weak lineup other than afraud, so this keeps a big bat away. It would be great to wait for Anderson, but the future is now while we have a core of young studs in the field and on the mound.

Posted by Jetersux December 10, 08 10:10 PM
  1. I think it would be a HUGH mistake to sign Texeira to an 8-10 yr. contract. Where does that leave Lars Anderson, who is a couple years away (if that)? He has shown great progress as a power hitter and hitting for average. He could be every bit the hitter Tex is -- and for alot less money!! I believe I read that Lowell has recovered well from his injuries. I do think that the Sox need a stronger bench for pinch hitting.

  1. C'mon Red Sox! Outbid everyone for Teixeira! We know you can afford it! I pay the high food prices at Fenway and I DON'T MIND as long as I see you are willing to spend money on the best players around. SIGN TEX!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Chris December 10, 08 11:47 PM
  1. Tex. would be the key to the line up. Because we need to know if ortiz would be like he was two years ago, Will Drew be healthy enough to play at least 100 games. What would plan B be?

Posted by alhouse December 11, 08 04:57 PM
  1. I think Tex is a terrible fit for the Sox. He's a classy family man which doesn't fit with the onnoxious jerk image our beloved Sox have lovingly cultivated.
