Coming soon: Teixeira press conference
NEW YORK - On the message boards along the facade of historic Yankee Stadium, four words say it all: "Yankees welcome Mark Teixeira.''
Roughly 90 minutes from now, the Yankees are due to formally announce the signing of Teixeira to an eight-year, $180 million deal, concluding a negotiation that produced an array of questions, particularly for Red Sox fans. Yankees owners Hank and Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman, and agent Scott Boras are among those expected in attendance with Teixeira. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera also just walked into the old stadium, where today's announcement will mark one of the final major events here before the Yankees move into their new home just across 161st Street.
Obviously, the Teixeira signing has been known for some time - roughly two weeks - but involved parties have not formally answered questions on the matter yet. Hopefully, some answers will come today when the Yankees officially unveil their new first baseman.
As always, we'll have updates later. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
