Flowers for Mrs. Tex?

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff January 6, 2009 12:00 PM

NEW YORK -- Just saw a member of the Yankees organization walk through the media workroom at Yankee Stadium toting a dozen red roses. Presumably, they are for Teixeira's wife, upholding a cheesy, longstanding Yankees tradition of presenting flowers to the wife of a newly acquired player.

Back in 2000, remember, the Yankees presented flowers to the wife of recently signed pitcher Mike Mussina, whom the Red Sox also coveted. At the time, many in Boston argued that the flowers were symbolic of New York's ability to close a deal while simultaneously revealing the Red Sox' inability to do so, an argument we now know to be foolish.

Unless, of course, there's an extra $10 million hidden somewhere among the thorns.

  1. Time for Tony Mazz and team to get over it....the Red Sox did not get Teixeira!
Move on and report Red Sox news!

  1. Even realizing the people who make these decisions aren't exactly our best and brightest, why are Boston writers at a Yankee news conference to announce the purchasing of another player? Accomplishes 2 things. Makes us look stupid and also makes us yawn.

  1. Maz, get over the $10MM already! Everyone knows by now that the Yanks were going to trump ANY offer the Red Sox made.

But I do love the "...upholding a CHEESY, longstanding Yankees tradition of presenting flowers to the wife of a newly acquired player" line. That sums up the Yankees in my book!

  1. Flowers for the wife of a newly signed player is not cheesy. It's a classy welcome to the family, I am certain that Red Sox organization in Boston does something similar

  1. Since when is it cheesy to give flowers? Surely no one thinks this gesture was the deal-maker. I've been a Yankee hater for 40 years and think no more highly of them by giving Mrs. Tex a bouquet, but, really, isn't this a lame excuse to jab them again?

  1. Mazz,
I can't believe that you found something even dumber to write about than your earlier column about all the 'questions' still out there. Nobody cares. You should stay down in NY. You seem to have a man crush on Teixeira. I think the roses are from you to Tex.

  1. and the red sox are continuing to uphold their "cheesy tradition" of being cheap

  1. Looking forward to wiping the Yankees up in 2009. They've been chock full of All-Stars the past eight years. Don't think 2009's Yankee outcome is going to be any different.

Remember how you felt when Detroit started '08? World Series winners for sure.

    ...enough said

  1. Who cares?!?

Number of Yankee championships with Mike Mussina? None
Number of Yankee championships with Jason Giambi? None
Number of Yankee championships with Randy Johnson? None
Number of Yankee championships with A-Rod? None
Number of Yankee championships with Carl Pavano? None
Number of Yankee championships with Bobby Abreu? None
Number of Yankee championships with Johnny Damon? None

See a pattern. Overspending for players does not guarantee a championship.

    Get over it.

  1. New Yankee 1B Mark Teixeira said today "it was a no brainer for me," regarding his decision to sign a contract with the Yankees. "Once Leigh [Teixeira's wife] said 'I want you to be a Yankee', it was a done deal," Teixeira said.

So the new Yankee is p-whipped. Isn't that the kind of thing a guy wants to keep private?

  1. nice job tony, you found the answer to why tex didnt sign with the redsox. it was the same answer the sox fans gave at the time of the signing, HE WANTED TO BE A YANKEE!. so the non -sense about the sox not doing what it took to get him were false, once again theo and the three-o played it right , boras just used them to up the price.

  1. Tony. PLEASE...no more Teixeira articles. The Red Sox didn't get him....let's move on! I can't believe you still think the Red Sox could have closed this deal without Boras shopping the offer to the Yankees. Teixeira wanted to go to the Yankees and the Yankees wanted to pay him. GET OVER IT!!!!

  1. Will you Boston sportswriters just let go of it?

The whole Bosox-Yankees "rivalry" was a contrivance of the Boston press. How sick do you have to be to go to NYC to attend a press conference by a "rival" team for a player you lusted after but lost.

For Chrissakes, it's a game, not life. Get yourself a life.
