Henry says he was told Sox were low bidders for Teixeira, and Boston wasn't high on free agent's list

Posted by Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff January 7, 2009 08:58 AM

A day after Mark Teixeira was introduced as the newest member of the New York Yankees, there may be more questions than answers regarding the Red Sox pursuit of the prized Scott Boras client.

In an e-mail last night to Jack Curry of the New York Times, Red Sox owner John Henry said he found it "curious" that Boston wasn't high on Teixeira's list of destinations and that the Red Sox were the low bidders for the free agent's services:

Henry said the Red Sox were unaware of [Teixeira's wife] Leigh's preference for the Yankees, but "felt all along that the Yankees were going to get the last call" from Boras. Since the Red Sox had proposed an eight-year deal for about $170 million, Henry said he found it curious they were told "that we were the low bidders and Boston wasn't high" on Teixeira's list.

"At one point, I asked Scott, given their feelings, why we shouldn't pull out," Henry said in an e-mail message. "His answer was, 'Maybe you should.' And we did."

By leaving the negotiations, it seemed as if the Red Sox were calling Boras's bluff and were trying to get him to prove that he had a better offer from the Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore or Washington. As Henry had expected, Boras still had the Yankees on speed dial, too.

  1. Youk is almost at Tex's level and soon will be. I never wanted Texiera and I am embarrassed now how the Nation is crying sour grapes.

If you're a Sox fan feeling bad about not getting Tex just remember how you originally felt when the team didn't get A-Rod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Players go to NY to die now.

  1. He is easy to hate! Just look at that face. Looks like a boring, Yankee stiff robot to me. Either a PR decision to apologize for choosing the Yanks by laying the blame on his wife or he truly does not have possession of his own testicles. I'de rather see Ryan Howard at first / DH for the Sox when free agency arrives anyway!

  1. I never thought Teixeira 'had it in' for the Sox. But I always thought that Boras wanted to punish the Sox for being shrewd, bluff-resistant negotiators (see Dice-K). By contrast, the Yanks are Boras' cash cow. Even when they're not top bidders, they're often useful for driving prices up. In this case, I'm sure he wanted to reward them by delivering them a player everyone knew their closest rivals very much wanted. That's why he would discourage the Sox by telling them that they were the 'low bidder' (apparently this was a lie), hiding things like Tex's wife's feelings on the move, and telling Henry that they should consider dropping out of the bidding.

  1. Question? If you compare the net salary of New Yorks offer Versus Bostons.... Tex took less money to go to NY, I think? Since New York has a higher tax rate, somewhere around 6-7% higher, that should bring the 180m NY offer to be around 168m-169m...? Do Henry and Theo use this when they fly out and make a pitch to Tex??

  1. I think baseball owners should stop being afraid of Boras and be more forceful in their negotiations. How many more 'deals' have to play out to prove Boras only comes to the table with lies. If he can't negotiate in good faith, he should not be allowed to do business. If a player has Boras for an agent, you don't talk to him. Where does this all end? Manny making 50 million dollars a year and no one in the ballpark because tickets are 2000.00 each? Eventually, baseball is going to put itself out of business. I go to Fenway to see good players play ball, not to see the most highly paid player and his agent. This is baseball we love right? Not MoneyBall?

  1. Neither Leigh nor Teix nor their families nor wormtongue boras had any aspirations for Teix in a Red Sox uniform . . . or Angels, or O's or Nat's. Four uniforms for a 28 year old star? Follow the $$. The compass always pointed to glamorous NYC. I feel bad for Leigh. I agree with #6.

  1. Is there been a bigger load of RUBBISH in the Boston sports media than this "Henry was calling their bluff" business? The Sox evaluated the player. They determined a range to work with. They reached the top of it, so – given the fact that Boras indicated they weren't close and the global economy is tanking – they decided this wasn't the time to reach down and come up with an even more obscene offer. They weren't outmaneuvered. Texeira didn't "get away."

As for the Yankees? Good luck coming up with nearly a billion dollars for contract liabilities and debt service on the new stadium over the next decade. Investment bankers lining up for those $850,000 luxury boxes after a 40% drop in the market? Didn't think so.

  1. I guess Tex joins Carl "Mama told me not to come" Pavano on the list of man-boys who let their women make decisions for them :) I never thought Tex was worth tying up that much money for. No player is who isn't going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer (Manny, come back, all is forgiven). I'm still worried about the holes in Red Sox lineup and the lack of power if Papi doesn't get back to 40hr levels, but I don't blame the Sox for taking a pass on Tex.

  1. I love the way you find players "easy to hate" because of what they look like. How about judging players by their talent...not their faces. Personally, I think he's easy for you to hate because you didn't get him. As an afterthought, not too many Red Sox players are winning "good looks" prizes. However, this has no bearing on their ability.

  1. Shoot, sign Giambi for 2 yrs (if he hasn't signed with the A's) and put him in rotation with Ortiz/Lowell until Lars is ready! That would pee off Bankee fans if he had a decent year.

Posted by Dizzyesasky January 7, 09 11:26 AM
  1. Ah, you Red Sox fans are so jealous of the Yankees. All along, I had mixed feelings on the signing because the player I wanted most is Manny Ramirez. Why? Because come playoff time, as much as I like ARod, he is just not a clutch performer in the playoffs. I want someone who can definitely HIT in the playoffs.

So cheer up Red Sox Nation. If we don't get Manny, we are not strong enough to win the WS. If we do sign Manny, I guarantee you we'll win WS #27. And there will be fewer Red Sox fans due to the many who jump off the bridge in Boston.

  1. Scot Boras mas be "shrewd" but bottom line: I would have to force myself to even consider doing business with him. Oh, I understand that's all part of "the business" of baseball, but seriously, are there really no guidelines for agent behavior? Can you actually say anything to get your guy the highest paying contract? Where does fraud come in to play here?

OK so these are heady questions. Just look at the whole A-Rod announcement during the World Series. Do you have to know more than that? Boras's vapid, hollow apology was just more of what you get with him. Maybe he's Mr. Wonderful

somewhere in his life, but he's just not someone who's good for baseball, and now this is surely messing with the Varitek negotiations as well. It's hard for me to believe that he's doing either side any real good.

Strangely enough, I just didn't want A-Rod with the Sox either, so maybe this deal with the Yankees is for the best. Let the Yankees sign up the "gods" of baseball, so if and when the Sox beat them, the Yankees will just be hanging their heads and "looking at their shoes" with nothing to say. Remember 04? These things happen.

  1. These comments from John Henry just reaffirm what everyone already knows. Any Scott Boras client will always give the Yankees the last call. The Yankees have made him. How many millions has he pocketed off them? Isn't the dollar the #1 love in his life? Why wouldn't he be the boy toy of the team willing to outspend any other team by millions?
Any individual with an ounce of self respect who offered $170 million dollars to a smug player who feigned interest in their team, represented by a sub human snake, would have and should have reacted the same way as John Henry. I applaud the Red Sox for their actions in this situation!!

  1. The story has been spun that Texeira and her husband secretly wanted to play for NY, but the article in Projo paints it more along the lines of money being the first consideration.

The article implies that the Spankees originally offered $20M per year, whereas the Sox offered $21.25M. I think most people, if they truly favored one job over another, would accept a 5% difference in pay, but it wasn't until after the Spankees offered $22.5M that Leigh's love for the Spanks was revealed.

Players always say "it's not about the money, it's about respect," but I'd have a lot more respect if they could admit it was about the money.

  1. Well, everyone who has signed a top-dollar Boras client... and their clients themselves... have regretted it given time. And I suppose we should still play the season, with the age and injury holes in Damon, Matsui, and Posada. Tex is a good man and has a good wife, they have done nothing wrong. I respect JH for actually standing his ground. I recommend that with the Boras antics with Manny, A-Rod and here that he has been given his 3 strikes and he should be "out", that the Red Sox refuse to ever negotiate with a Boras free agent client again. The guy demands top dollar and then sabotages the later years. But DO extend Dice-K before he goes free agent, haha.

  1. What I love about Henry and Lucchino is how they publicly talk about the lies Scott Boras tells in private and how they expose the Boras' media lackey's (that's you Ken Rosenthal) when Scotty The Sleaze plants stories about players of color (Manny) staying away from Boston.

  1. Please do not pity the Red Sox. They are asleep at the wheel yet again. Now Manny goes to the Yankees and the Red Sox fall into baseball oblivion for another century. Red Sox fans weren't comfortable with a winning team anyway.

    Posted by cc0590 January 7, 09 12:11 PM
  1. $180 million dollars is a lot of money for a player that made the allstar team once. As ARod knows, there is a big difference between playing in Texas, Atlanta, and Anaheim and playing in New York and Boston. Let's seehow is wife feels once the classy fans at Yankees Stadium start calling him out.

Posted by Brian January 7, 09 12:23 PM
  1. I can't wait to see if Manny ends up settling for the same or maybe even slightly less money that his options would have paid out had he stayed with the Sox. If people really wanted Manny, he would be signed, sealed and delivered by now. If that really happens then all that happened is that Manny paid his commission to Boras instead of his old agents. So much for 4 years, $100 million like Boras thought. Good riddance.

  1. For your information, Tex never took less money to go to NY!! He took the most money!! Doesnt matter if state tax apply to the salary or not. 180 mil will alway count to the MLB payroll!!! Period.!!

Dont even care if Tex want to be NYY. We, the Sox fans, all have seen this before from Mussina to Giambi to Damon and then Tex all saying, "I want to be a Yankees so I can win a RING!!! All have failed except Tex. He will soon be the next Yankees's jinxed guy!!

Go Sox, Youk is far better all around player 1B than Tex!! I am happy to see him to stay at 1B

    Go Youk and Sox!!

  1. Hey, Jason Giambi had a better first half '08 than Teixeira - and he's even proven that he can do it in NY. What has Tex shown in the spotlight? Not much, so far.

Look, I know that Giambi is no Tex. Point is, this guy doesn't give the Yankees anything they didn't already have in broken down Giambi, except he'll do it for 162+.

See how Tex does living on AL East pitching...You're not hiding in the AL West, or the NL East anymore.

  1. Wow, you all sound like a bunch of sour grape eating jilted schoolgirls.

The bottom line about Boras is this: his JOB is to represent his clients' best interests. Most times, that means getting them the most money, unless by some chance something is more important to the player than money. Boras is under no obligation to tell an owner everything he knows about what the player and his family think/want. His obligations run to the player, not management.

Does Boras make mistakes sometimes, as he did with A-Rod a year ago? Sure. But it is hard to argue with his results on behalf of his clients. I read an article about Boras about 10 years ago, and every single baseball exec interviewed stated how much they hated dealing with him. But every one of them also said that if they had a son drafted to play pro-ball, they would want boras to represent him.

Anyone else think that he was making the Yankees bid against themselves to get this deal done? Now all of the Yankee fans are thrilled that he is in pin stripes (remind anyone of a prison uniform?) for a higher dollar and probably longer contract than they COULD have aquired him for. Way to go NY, another A-Fraud deal in the books!

  1. Lars Anderson is going to be a player. And I'd rather root for him than that money-grubbing Teixeira. Varitek is working on my last nerve too. Given the year he had, he should have taken arbitration, had a monster year, and THEN asked for the multiyear deal. Something is fishy there. Maybe he thinks he's lost it, and that this is the strongest place he can negotiate from. I hope not.

If Buchholz pulls a Kessel and bounces back to stardom the sox have five aces. We'll be more than just ok, and for more than just one year. Losers can go elsewhere, and take their short-term, superficial, materialistic mentality with them.

  1. Boras and his clients live in the now, as is necessary. They do not need to worry about whether they are harming the game of baseball, or force the salary cap issue. He and his clients are getting their $$ right now. He is an evil, but one we all have to live with and deal with.

As far as the Tex issue goes, he is a valuable player and would help every team in MLB, same with Youk. No one should be surprised that the Yankees paid top dollar for him - they had a glaring need for 1B, which we didn't. Tex was more of a luxury for the Red Sox than he was filling a dire need. I still like our team as it stands - we have an awesome defensive infield, and we remain flexible for the future. For example, Lowell's contract will end just about the time that Lars is ready for the majors. Contrast that with the Yankees, who will be very good if their free agent signings pan out as hoped; if they don't pan out, the Yankees are stuck with a bunch of untradeable players (unless they want to eat most of the contracts and pay these guys to play for other teams).

Let's also keep a few things in mind - it seems we knew that the Yankees would get the last call for Tex from Boras; the Yankees needed a 1B; perhaps we drove up the bidding for a player we wanted but the Yankees needed to achieve a win-win situation: either we get Tex or the Yankees commit way too much money and years to a player (again). I think we just made sure that the Yankees didn't get Tex for a bargain.

DO we need to hate Tex? Aside from the pinstripes, all he's done is say the right things vis-a-vis the Yankees. should he say that he really was attracted to the recent successes of the Red Sox, the popular reputations of the ownership and manager, the tradition of Fenway, etc. but ultimately was swayed by the higher pay offered by the Yankees? Maybe, but I'm sure that Hank and Hal would have not appreciated that. So he talks unconvincingly about preferring to play for a team that has not won squat despite the highest payroll, who's owners are loose cannons and deflects the decision on to his wife. Think Boras scripted that? Even if it's true, can we hate a guy for following the $$ when we got Manny the same way? there may be other reasons to dislike Tex, and more may emerge a la Bucky Dent, but let's all take a deep breath and let this thing go.

    Enough!!

I was wondering who that one person who actually likes A-hole (er, A-Rod) is, now I know..the big Tex is going to be almost as fun to watch choking on the money as A-Rod is...Two Fat contracts - over $400 million total between them AND ZERO RINGS priceless! The Yankmees have NO defence up the middle, tough to win a WS that way.....maybe the thongs will help.....PS thanks for taking Johnny D... did they make left field really short in the new stadium so Johnny can reach the cut-off man without bouncing it?

  1. Gotta agree with comment 18. Boras used Tex to show the Sox his muscle, getting back at them for dissing him re Dice-K and Manny. This is only going to strain the negotiations with Varitek, who feels some loyalty to the Sox and is really caught in the middle here. Blue-sky hunch: Varitek sees the fix he's in, pulls an A-Rod and dumps Boras, and deals with the Sox via some other agent or directly.

Can you imagine Youk, with his one-year contract, playing on the opposite corner of Texiera? I'm glad that it's still Youk and Lowell. Anyway, with the hedge fund mess, I have been wondering how much Mr. Henry would be able to spend and also put up with.

I just have to go back to the Payroll of the Tampa Bay Rays when I think of what the Yankees have continued to do season after season in an attempt to "BUY" the World Series, & not only did they not win the World Series in the past several years, they have not even made it into the Series. The New York Media makes them out to be much bigger & better than they really are. Another thing to ponder... How long before the entire nucleus of the team is all Boras Clientele? Yeah, that'll certainly win you Championships, when you have a bunch of greedy players that are only concerned about their own ambitions & when they get ri=ght down to it, are unable to grasp the "TEAM CONCEPT". Jeter, you should demand to be traded, you don't deserve to be surrounded by a bunch of greedy losers. We'd love to have you here in Boston where the "TEAM CONCEPT" has proven to create true winners! ala Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, & yes, look at how well it is taking hold with the Bruins, now that Sinden has left the building.

Neither of them cast a reflection in a mirror, nor care about the ramifications of their actions. At some point teams are going to get fed up with the high price of dealing with Boras and his clients. Good luck to Teixeira. He's going to need it. The Yankess haven't got it done with other high-priced players (A-Rod, Randy Johnson, Abreu, Pavano, etc) It's going to be a hefty bar tab when this party is over.

Youk/Tex 08 stats were very close: BA .312/.308, R 91/102, H 168/177, HR 29/33, RBI 115/121, and OPS .959/.962. And Youk played in only 145 games versus Texiera's 157. Career stats are not that far off either, considering Tex has six full MLB seasons under his belt versus Youk's three. Add to this the difference in pitching in the AL East that Youk has faced (anyone who "follows baseball" knows that good pitching will beat good hitting), the fact that Youk was shifted between first and third and still is one of the best infielders in the big leagues, plus was bounced around the lineup in 08, and that Baseball Writers ranked him third in MVP balloting, and I think it is safe to say that not only is Youk "almost at Texiera's level" he is already there in many ways.

  1. Why does it always end up with underhanded intrigue when Boras is involved.
I like the way they have dealt with contracts with the new ownership. "This is what you are worth to us...if someone else pays you more, good luck to you, no hard feelings."

I believe the Sox had there limit and reached it.

That being said...it sounds like Boras is a lying slime and they should avoid him, if possible.

  1. Mitch, please already!

Are you kidding me? We wait 500 years for a championship and you want to bag the owners already? Give me a break. Shut up. I'll take Mr. Henry any day of the week over what we've had forever.

    Go Sox!

  1. Unlike the infantile ranting of Mr. Malph here, Mike Lowell knows if he can't perform at a certain level the Red Sox are obligated to finding a suitable replacement. The players also know they get one, maybe two, chances at free agency megabucks in a generally short career. Fact is the Sox ,Yankees et al, owe the fans the best product they can field. The players owe the fans and the team an honest effort while under contract, nothing after. Damon, Pedro, Manny, Nomar and others went unsigned or traded because it was in the best interest of the Red Sox to do so.
Now the Red Sox have a Gold Glove/Silver Bat type 1B. The Yankees were losing a 30 HR/ 100 RBI 1B, plus 20 HR/100RBI RF. Who needed The Texas Panhandler more? Who really drove up the price here? The Yankees had to replace Mussina( 20 wins) and 50 HRs and 200 RBI. They had to break the bank going into a 1 Billion dollar ballpark. They HAD to sign CC Irabu and A.J. Pavano or risk being back page fodder for a whole season to the Reyes, Wright,Santana in-thier-prime team in Queens. They HAD to or risk being second rate in the league and in thier own town.
The Yankees aren't much better than last year, they're still old and slow at to many positions and the Sox have actually improved some in the bullpen, which was thier biggest problem last year. Comebacks for Lowell and Wang may end up being the biggest questions to be answered this season.

  1. Just play the games and we'll see if NY was able to get out of 3rd place in the league.

Based on what they spent, there is NO excuse. See you in April.

  1. Teix looks really dorky in that uniform.

  1. This is getting old. The Sox are in good shape, and they have a great farm system that is ready to contribute. Just look back a few years ago and you would never know that Ellsbury, or Padroia would produce as they have. Youk is another great example.
They are tweaking their team now, and if Baldelli and Smoltz join the team is even better, both on the field and in the clubhouse.
The dealings with Boras have really soured me on the whole process. I am glad the Sox walked away.
Remember they cam within one win of going to the World Series with a banged up lineup.
One more thing to think about. Kasmire is a free agent after 09!

  1. The sad part in all of this is that the Boston Globe, Herald and every other news paper protects agents like Scott Boras, the so called pundits are so afraid to speak out and call him what he is, Lies Lies Lies, they write oh he's pulled a fast one after the fact, gee 170 million, and their the low bidders, I make 18$ and to think we kiss up to these over pd, ego driven players who eat, sleep, crap just like us, only they never worry about forclosure, no health insurance, or where the next check will come from. Enjoy the game with your 8$ hot dog, 5$ coke, 200$ ticket, oh yea thats right we pay their Salary thanks for thinking of us.

  1. Sox fans shouldn't begrudge texireia because he went to ny. Let him go. I'll bet he regrets it some day. The worst thing is to have a player who doesn't want to be on the team he's playing for i.e. ramirez. Of course he's going to string along the Sox because it drives up his value. Let's move on. Personally, i think we are better off because of his decesion. I like our team as it stands right now and you know theo isn't through improving the team yet either. (You think this has been a circus, wait until albert pujois is available in 3 years).

  1. The only thing missing from these 69 posts are the 69 pairs of clown shoes and 69 red foam noses. You all spent 3 months fawning over Tex and now you never wanted him. Just like you did with A-Rod. After you got outplayed by Cashman, your story was that you never wanted A-Rod anyway. Comical. We call that revisionist hsitory. Your pathetically short memory always fails to address your Oh for 86 snoozathon, so keep drinking the Kool Aid and chirping about recent history. I prefer to think of your team as 2 for 91. Impressive. Let's see if your boy Youk is willing to take the hometown discount. I think not. Big Fatty is in decline and there is no bat to protect him. You're reduced to trolling for broken-down has beens because you're "fiscally responsible. Truth be known, you play in a Little League park that can't hold enough lemmings to support your appetite. John Henry ought to buy himself a dress.

  1. Wow! sox fans always say glad we didn't get this player or that player after they lose him and talk trash about someone they wanted all along could you imagin
what that line up would look like with tex in the middle now look at what it's gonna look like say what you want about the yankees but they give the fans the best that's
on the market doesn't always turn into ws wins but you have to give them credit they had some needs and signed the best free agents on the market.
