Report: Rays to sign Burrell

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff January 5, 2009 03:34 PM

Pat Burrell is apparently on the verge of joining the team he helped defeat in the World Series.

According to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Tampa Bay Rays are close to signing Burrell, who has spent his entire nine-season career with the Philadelphia Phillies, to a two-year, $16 million contract.

The 32-year-old Burrell helped the Phillies defeat the Rays in five games in the Fall Classic, doubling to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning of the clincher. Pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett scored what proved to be the winning run.

Burrell, who batted. 250 with 33 homers and 86 RBIs last season, is expected to be the Rays' designated hitter. In his career, he is a .257 hitter with 251 homers and an .852 OPS.

  1. The Rays signing of Burrell is a good signing for the Sox. He is an upgrade for them thus the Sox will be more mindful of keeping up with the standard establish by the Rays, forget the Yankees' spending spree, Boston does not want to fall behind the Rays on paper. What am I proposing? Perhaps a quality starter, a trade for one of the young catchers or even a bigger move that brings a big bat to one of the two positions where we lack punch. Be prepared however to give up one of the young pitching prospects.
