Report: Sox to sign Baldelli
Peter Gammons is reporting that the Red Sox are close to signing outfielder Rocco Baldelli to be the team's fourth outfielder. Baldelli will be a guest at tomorrow night's Boston Baseball Writers Dinner, where he will receive the 2008 Tony Conigliaro Award. The deal is expected to be announced then. We're working on confirming this, and we'll let you know when it is confirmed.

Welcome home, Rocco!
The man with Baseball's coolest nickname is coming to Boston!
Best of luck to The Woonsocket Rocket!!
great signing....let him wear #5 like in tampa
Good Luck Rocco.
We'll need your help at the plate and that cannon for an arm.
Great pickup i was really hoping they would sign him as the fourth outfielder. Im really liking the red sox offseason so far. Penny was a steal, if he turns out to be at least above average, it will be great. This is exactly the type of offseason they need, nothing big, just small improvements here and there. A team the made it to game 7 of the ALCS, especially one that has the majority of its players returning, does not need to make a big splash...
Good job Theo!
are the red sox in the baseball business or recycling business?what's with this trying to sign up used rebuilt old players.looks pretty cheap to me.go out there
theo and company, and get us some decent talent..we want young promising
players who will help this organization now and in the future.why wasn't yukilus
made a great offer?he played his heart out for boston."wake up and smell the roses"right now it seems that the red sox are spiraling downwards!
Are you kidding me! Not another Julio Lugo. Why keep signing has been Rays, so they'll keep your bench warm? Heck sign me and I'll keep your bench warm and water boy.
Done deal it appears as is Smoltz. Great signnig there.
YES>>>>>>>>>YESSSSSS> This is going to be the steal of the century ...This kid is going to be awesome ..He is stll very young with so much upside!!! Great
talk about becoming more like the Yankees: signing a "hope-case" like Penny and a has-been like Smoltz! Just like the Yankees of old! Add a stretch like Baldelli and ....... keep your fingers crossed
This is a FANTASTIC move by the Sox. I couldn't be happier with it. Now that we know Doctors have finally made the correct dignosis of his condition, we now know it can be treated which is a HUDGE advantage for the Red Sox since Baldelli is ONLY 27 years old!!! I have told my friends and family all along that I had a sinking suspicion that Baldelli would end up in Boston Hopefully its a good short term deal that in the end he could end up taking over for the STIFF J.D. Drew!!!!!!!!!
Awesome signing! If Rocco can finally get past his medical problem and live up to his potential we have a significant addition to the team. Home Town Kid comes home and shines!
"why wasn't yukilus made a great offer?he played his heart out for boston."
Youk WAS made a great offer. He's made it abundantly clear year after year that he'd prefer to go year to year through his arbitration period rather than signing a long term contract and the dividends that's paid for him are something that cannot be argued. He won'[t sign long term before he hits free agency unless he has a down year.

The difference between this and the "Yankees of old" is that the Yanks would've signed Smoltz to $18 million a year and Baldelli to $12MM per. These are smart, obvious moves to shore up an already great team. It's gotten lost in the bluster of the Yankees' huge offseason blockbuster signings, but the Sox were actually in the best position to contend in the AL East by a pretty wide margin before the hot stove season began and they're still right in the mix. Pound for pound, we still have a better pitching staff and our lineup isn't far behind.
