Sox get Green

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff January 5, 2009 03:49 PM

The Red Sox have agreed to terms with infielder Nick Green on a minor league deal and will invite him to major league camp in spring training to compete for the utility infielder job.

Green, 30, is righthanded hitter (.240 career), has been with four teams including Atlanta, Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees, and Seattle.

  1. That out to whet the appetites of all Red Sox fans----Nick Green. Now let me see, we have gotten ourselves up to speed with Brad "Trencherman" Penny, Josh Bard of 202 fame with the Padres last season, and now a 240 hitting journeyman named Nick. If this isn't a indication that John Henry has become a penny pinching miser nothing does. We have done nothing this off season to upgrade our team. I almost get the impression that losing that battle for Mark Teixeira has traumatized the whole organization and we are simply waddling along without any real direction. I'm surprised I have heard from the ruthless but capable Larry Lucchino yet. I know that guy wants to win; he should be bending Henry's ear to open the vault and for Theo to get cracking and trade for the help we need.

  1. How exciting for the Sox.Nick Green?Boston needs some real additional
offense. However I have a feeling that they are going to say they have enough talent
to stand pat like they said last year..ONLY this year they will finish third or
fourth in the east.By-the-way,their farm system is week when it comes to
position players. They must fill the catching spot with some offense.Get a right
handed bat with some pop,and the starting pitching is still a question. Will the
real Beckett step forward,,,or who is the real Beckett.Jim Penson

  1. Wow wee.

To be honest, I was torn between Texeira and Green. I am glad the Sox made the decision for me

    Posted by Tomen8r January 5, 09 06:39 PM
  1. Phew, I was worried that the non-signing of Texiera was going to make our offense a bit weak. I bet Green's OPS really fits with the program.

Looking forward to the $9 beers at Fenway this summer...

  1. Yankees get Mark Teixeira, AJ Burnett, and CC Sabathia. The Rays get the final piece to solidify their potent line-up with Pat Burrell and the Red Sox get and injured Brad Penny and Nick Green!

    Woohoo! Who's next Theo...Willie Blooquist ?!?

Posted by bdog January 5, 09 07:59 PM
  1. That;s the best you can come up with.

With the highest tickets in all of baseball, the fans deserve better.

Come on Red Sox Nation, show your anger at this pathetic off season.....

When will you admit that Theo is way over rated as a GM. Finally take off your rose color glasses.

  1. Who the heck is Nick Green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does this mean the Red Sox will win the World Series now.????????????

Posted by Jesse January 5, 09 08:43 PM
  1. WOW... Now that's a signing! I really hope the Sox are going to try and sneak a "Scimping-it" season on us and hope we're all ok with it due to the economy etc.. We sit here and watch everyone else in the AL East (with the exception of the Jays) build a stronger linep and, while we in more need of a solid bat (4th OF/1B/Super-sub type) we keep letting teams like NYY and TB make great signings.. You watch, Next will be Manny to NYY and their record setting lineup (or we could see a total collapse due to all the fevered-ego's in one locker room) in the history of MLB..
I am really worried now... Who is out there that will be a true Sox player and fill the voids? I just don't get what they're doing (I even stuck up for them not signing Tex for a lousy 10 Mill believing that Tex wanted to go to NYY all along but, come on, get your act together Sox front office! If we have to sit back and watch mediocre baseball then you should do us a favor and cut the ticket prices in half because "It's all about the economy man!"...
Give me a break! If the Sox total player salary drops this year, let's say, 5% then we know what the reason for NOT Beefing the lineup was... Thanks... If that is the case I will remember that when sitting online for days trying to score tickets to ANY Sox game for money I don't have! I won't be the only person in that boat my friends!

Oh, and by the way... Do we think Brad Penny is the pitcher to fill the gap? Really? I like his stuff, don't get me wrong, buit really people! If he pans out - great! I hope he does (I'm praying he does).. But the chances are we won't see what we want out of him - realistically 35 to 65 percent of the season we may see a good pitcher (barring injury).. 1st of all this is still an NL pitcher - forget what he did in the WS in 2003.. This is the AL and he's damaged goods working his way back... We got all hopped up about the Wade Miller signing too - what happened there?

] I just hope the Sox are in

Posted by Chris January 5, 09 08:49 PM
  1. Josh Bard, Brad Penny, now Nick Green. Who the heck is Nick Green.
Not the making of a World Series team. Oh well the Red Sox will get em
    in 2010.

Now we can win the LL world series..... Get rid of a terrible hitter in TEK and pick up this turd?

  1. Like the song goes "Is that all there is" The yankees get C.C., Burnett, Tex, the Rays get Burrell, Joyce, Theo gets Green, Bard, Penny. Oh yes, Theo also got the other Raimirez. The next shoe to fall (I'll bet) will be Varitek. That will be it..... Bard was a failure here once before, Varitek is terrible offensively, Penny is a project, Green is less than a journeyman. It's going to be a long year fighting with the BlueJays for third place!!!

  1. Pointless really. Green may be a good infielder but a career .240 hitter. Please! If you go to half of the AAA games and look around there are plenty of guys that could fill that role much better. Better yet invite ME to spring training and i'll show them a waste of space like this guy! (i'll do it for free)

Posted by David Mansfield January 5, 09 11:15 PM
  1. Oh boy! Utility infielders and backup catchers! Way to swing for the fences Red Sox!

    Yankees: CC, Burnett, Texiera
Rays: Pat Burrell, and another year of experience for a frighteningly young and talented team
    Red Sox: Squat

Beckett had a down year where his velocity was down 7 to 10 miles per hour in the playoffs, Papi is a year older and now injury prone, and who knows with Lowell. We are 2 injuries away from being in third place this year.

Texiera was a once every 5 year player to hit free agency. The Sox drew the line in the sand over 10 million over 7 years. SWING AND A MISS!!!

  1. I am very disappointed in our SOX. They have sat back and watched as their worst nightmare has developed with the yankee signing the players they have and now the Rays signing Pat Burrell. There needs to be a major blockbuster in the works or I think you will see aloot of angry fans on Yawkee Way this year along with some unhappy players such as Big Popi.
My up your damn minds and either sign Tek or tradce for a younger catcher. go out and get Pevy and give up Bucholz.

  1. Not that there's much that can be done about it at this point, but c'mon. . . the Yanks get CC, Burnett, and T-Rod, while we go after Josh Bard, Brad Penny, and Nick Green? Is it just me or can anyone else see the glaring difference? I still have faith, though ;)

    Posted by denver_soxfan January 6, 09 09:48 AM
  1. The Yankees sign all these superstars. Even Tampa improves, signing Pat Burrell.

    We counter with Nick Green.

    Print the World Series tickets!!!!!!!

Posted by Matt Talvi January 6, 09 10:24 AM
  1. And the Rays sign Pat Burrell.
While the Sox fiddle, the Yankees and Rays beef up.
The Sox seem content to add lesser players they can find (with the possible exception of Brad Penny), afraid to spend big $ for a power hitter they need. They feel that Lowell and Ortiz will be 100% in '09. Big risks, doubts there. And, of course, Drew will miss a ton of games. Their infatuation with Buchholz will prevent them from certain trades, and we know the team's weird love affairs with guys like Lugo, etc., etc. Sox will continue to build from within, risking a 3rd place finish '09.

Posted by Jay January 6, 09 11:55 AM
  1. You know, if you want a team that just throws money away blindly, be a yankees fan. The Red Sox are smart with their money. I think Theo has proven that again and again. Sure, they don't always work out, but we lost ARod to them, and how many WS have they won since? And how many have we won? Sure, Henry could have paid the money, but you think if we matched their offer Tex would have come here? NO. You think the yanks would not just bid higher and higher? Tex just did not want to come to Boston. So he's the idiot. We have a good team, and Theo WILL make it better.

  1. The Sox were 1 game, a 3-1 loss, away from returning to the WS, so far they have lost a .220 catcher, a utility infielder, a backup catcher, a couple of spare pieces.

The Sox will have money to spend in June and July when other teams fall out of races and are failing at the box office.

Yes the Yankees added a great 1st baseman and a great picther. A J Burnett is likely to be equal to the prior signing of AJ, or Pavano or Clement (all ex Marlins).

Remember CC, Manny and Texeria were available last year. More players were available this year.

The economy is BAD. How many of you have made extensive long term committments?
How many Red Sox season ticket holders would committ to a 8-10 year legal binding obligation to buy their tickets?

It is easy to spend other peoples money.............Henry, et al bought the Sox to make money. They have given us the playoffs (w/ 2 WS) 5 out of the last 6 years.

Relax.......if the Sox revenues hold, they will spend more money.

  1. I don't know anything about the guy and no he isn't stellar but a .240 average is almost average with most players batting .250. Could've done better yes, but mine as well let him show us what we got. Beckett was hurting in the play offs, his side had to be botheirng him. I bet we'll see the real Josh Beckett this season. And yes the Yankess have picked up some great players HOWEVER every year htye're on top in payroll with the supossed greatest team and they haven't gone to the play offs in forever. Money doesn't always equal talent. Look at Arod. The guy gets paid all that money to choke and put up zeros in October. Give the Sox some more time.

  1. I am a friend of Nick's. I understand Red Sox fans frustration with this off season. Please try not to take it out on Nick and give him an opportunity to win you over. I believe he can make the team and if given the chance can hit 270-280 with 15-20 HR's. His swing is tailor made for Fenway. His last few years he has been injured and was not given a true opportunity. He has played every position in the show with the exception of pitcher, catcher and 1B. He was signed for infield depth and I think you will all be pleasantly surprised by him. At one time he was the top prospect in the Braves org and led the Int'l Lg in hitting. He is a humble guy who wants to prove his worht in Boston
