Teixeira: I held no grudges from 1998

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff January 6, 2009 08:40 PM

Barring an unforeseen development, here’s the last update on Mark Teixeira:

If you are among those who believes that Teixeira still harbors resentment toward the Red Sox from a botched negotiation that took place during the Dan Duquette administration in 1998, you shouldn't. Teixeira addressed the topic in no uncertain terms.

"That had nothing at all to do with it," Teixeira said of the impact the happening might have had on his decision to sign with the rival Yankees. "I was 18 years old. I was a kid. I knew nothing about the business of baseball. I relied on my instincts; my instincts said go to college and I had the best three years of my life. I’m actually thankful that it happened because I met my wife. I had three of the greatest years of my life and I have lifelong friends [from college]."

The Red Sox today are under different management, of course, but we thought it was necessary to get this out there given some of the speculation about Teixeira’s decision-making process.

  1. Come on Mazz...do you know how you can tell when Texiera is lying? His mouth is moving! This guy has not been straightforward from the beginning. He has no credibility. He talked about meeting w/Cashman BEFORE the winter meetings and saying that is when he was sold. And if it did not bother him about 1998--then why did he bring it up during the ALDS. It wasn't a negotiating strategy--it was a prideful man still talking about the past and his wittle feewings got hurt. Good golly--and here is ANOTHER REASON NOT TO SIGN VARITEK---HE IS BUDDIES WITH THIS FIRST CLASS PUNK--SO HE WILL NEVER LET ANYONE THROW AT HIM. Bring on Zaun--or get Salty--he probably remembers this punk--if we don't drill him w/in the first w/e we play them then we have lost our edge. I think I have totally gone insane...

  1. I'm so tired hearing about this clown. Stop posting articles about him. I dont care what he has to say. All I know is that he wasn't man enough to tell the Red Sox that he is not interested to play for them. I dont care that he signed with the Yankees but to bring the owner all the way to Texas is disgusting to me. It shows that he is a selfish punk that gives crap about others. Enough all ready. I'm going to be so happy if they get eliminated in the first round of playoffs.

  1. So, Mazz....still waiting for your apology to Sox management. No way TEX was ever goign to sign with Boston unless they blew away the Yanks offer. Since the Yanks overpaid him as it was, how stupid would the sox have been to top the worst contract offer since Zito.

  1. Who needs Leigh Teixieria in town when you already have Amalie B in town. Giggiddy!

  1. He just said that it worked out very well for him and that it was not a factor in his decision making . He didn't say that he held no grudge, from this brief report. Just like we can say that we are very thankful for the A-rod deal (no deal) in 2004, it does not mean we hate the man any less.

  1. So this incident did affect his decision, indirectly because if he hadn't met his wife, she wouldn't have forced him to go the Yankees.

  1. it would have been funnier if he said that college was "the best 9 years of my life."

  1. If Donnie Baseball had been with the Red Sox, Teixeira would have been at Fenway yesterday...well, either that or if Leigh Teixeira had told Mark on Date Night December 12th, "I want you to be a Red Sox!"...

  1. Let me get this straight. He signed with the MFY because his wife wanted him to? It must of been those front seat tickets to the Macy's parade that got her! lol

Good luck in NY, dolts! We'll take care of you 'player who's name I can't spell' when you visit Fenway.

  1. In the end, the RS need to recognize that they need to move on. They need to sign Youkilous to a long term contract, because he represents their best possible counter-part to Teixieria. Do it now, do it big, and take the chance that Youkilous's one year will translate into many more of the same. If Lars Andersen matures into a fine first baseman, then move Youkilous to third or later to a DH.

  1. I wonder if some Sox fans will give Mr$.Teixeira the same type of treatment they gave Cynthia Rodriguez or Joumana Kidd...
