Sox strike deal with Varitek, still seek young catcher

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff January 30, 2009 05:26 PM

From the pursuit of Mark Teixeira to the retention of Jason Varitek, the Red Sox offseason effectively drew to a close today. The team's roster is all but set, the relationship with its captain ultimately preserved.

On the day of a team-mandated deadline, the Red Sox reached agreement with Varitek early this afternoon on a one-year year, $5 million contract for the 2009 season, according to multiple baseball sources. The deal includes a dual second-year option that first allows the Sox to retain the player for an identical $5 million salary 2010; should the Sox decline that, Varitek can exercise a right to return to the club for a guaranteed $3 million with the chance to earn an additional $2 million in incentives.

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Varitek can earn those incentives only if he (and not the team) exercises the 2010 option, leaving the maximum value of the deal at $10 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Varitek would earn $400,000 at each plateau for starting 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 games in 2010.

Those incentives, said multiple sources familiar with the negotiations, ensure Varitek that he will be paid a salary more commensurate with a starting player should the Sox still need him to fill that role beyond 2009.

The Sox did not formally announce the deal because the agreement is contingent upon Varitek passing a physical exam next week.

According to a team source, Varitek and general manager Theo Epstein spoke directly via telephone late Thursday night to help bridge the gap between the player and team. Sox officials then finalized the deal with agent Scott Boras this morning and early afternoon, just beyond an 8:30 a.m. deadline the team had established before Varitek and Epstein spoke.

That deadline, according to a source in the Varitek camp, was established by the club in a letter sent via registered mail dated Jan. 22. According to the same source, copies of the letter were delivered to both Varitek and Boras at 8:30 a.m. last Friday, Jan. 23, specifying that Varitek had "one week" to accept or decline the team's offer.

Varitek's discussion with Epstein was the second 1-on-1 conversation the player had with a team official in the last two weeks. On Friday, Jan. 16, Varitek had a 90-minute, face-to-face meeting with owner John Henry near the player's Atlanta-area home, a session Varitek requested with the hope of re-opening dialogue between the club and Boras.

Just prior to that, already-tense relations between the Red Sox and Boras had become additionally strained in the wake of Teixeira negotiations, a pursuit that left some Sox officials, most notably Henry, feeling cheated. On the day Teixeira's eight-year, $180 million agreement with the New York Yankees was formally announced, Henry sent an email to the Associated Press in which he stated that the Sox always expected the Yankees to get "last call" because "that's what you deal with in working with Scott."

By that stage, Varitek and Boras had long since rejected the club's offer for salary arbitration, a decision that still might have cost the player millions. While an arbitration award might have resulted in non-guaranteed earnings for the player, most believe Varitek would have ended up with a 2009 salary in the range of $10 million -- a number equal to his 2008 earnings in base salary and pro-rated bonus money -- had he accepted the arbitration offer.

Instead, Varitek's maximum salary rests at $10 million for the next two seasons combined, though he can earn slightly more in standard award bonuses (like Most Valuable Player, etc.) that are part of most contracts.

With Varitek secured, the Sox now have much-needed experience in a catching corps that includes Josh Bard, George Kottaras, Dusty Brown and Mark Wagner. Bard, who was signed earlier this offseason at a non-guaranteed salary of $1.7 million, is the most likely candidate to serve as Varitek's backup, though that likely will be determined after pitchers and catcher report to Fort Myers on Feb. 12 for the start of spring training.

In the longer term, the Varitek signing now gives the Sox valuable time to continue their search for a long-term replacement, something the club still hopes to accomplish through trade. According to a baseball source, the Sox still could make a deal for a young, developing catcher before the start of the season, though Varitek's presence now gives them the luxury of extending that search into midyear (just before or at the annual July 31 trading deadline) and even beyond the 2009 season.

To this point, the Sox' most serious discussions for a catcher have taken place with the Texas Rangers (for Jarrod Saltalamacchia) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (for Miguel Montero), but the Sox found the asking price of both teams to be too great. All of that made it more critical for the club to lock up Varitek, highly regarded by pitchers, coaches and managers, and who has been with the Sox since joining them via trade in July 1997.

Now, with Varitek all but certain to end his career with the Red Sox, the team can more freely go about finding his replacement without as much urgency.

  1. If that's true then the Sox just blew $8 million. Stupid. JV will be the 2009 Red Sox version of Mark Bellhorn.

  1. About time... they should still go out and trade for a young catcher. Maybe now that they have less immediate need, it will bring the price down on one of their targets.

  1. Tek, what took you so long. I am glad you are back. Have a good year and help outour pitching staff as only you can do, Beat the damn Yankees. Go Sox. Play Ball.

    Posted by Carly Z January 30, 09 02:32 PM
  1. Good job Tek. I was starting to worry about you. I don't think our pitching staff would be the same w/o you! Go Sox!

Posted by dmoore January 30, 09 02:32 PM
  1. My biggest concern is that when it Francona finally removes Tek from his #1 catcher slot, he would have cost us 3 games, which could well be enough to miss the playoffs in the hyper competitive AL East. It seemed so hard for Francona to pinch hit for him.. can you imagine what torture we will go through before he sits the Captain?

  1. Well it's about time....I just hope there are no hard feelings in all of this. The Red Sox now have to move forward, and forget all of the nastiness that has taken place, and realize it's just business. Jason Varitek, needs to do the same thing, and not harbor any hard feelings, he too needs to realize this was business, and not personal.

    Nice job Boras. :-)

Tek is a great teammate. Let's just hope he can still get a few hits.

Posted by Latrappe January 30, 09 02:34 PM
  1. I'm glad they got it done. Now trade/sign for a younger catcher who can be tutored by Varitek.

  1. I'm glad, but I hope that the nastiness of the off-season does not harm relationships.

Now here this! If you want to known as a team kind of guy, do not hire Boras. That's the negotiating equivelant of putting on boxing gloves. The Sox proved that they too, can play the game. Sadly, it cost Jason a lot of money. I'm sure Jason will man-up. He's the one that 'picked the fight'.

Posted by VTtoNC January 30, 09 02:34 PM

Posted by Wade January 30, 09 02:35 PM
  1. i respect him to death but i hope his offense improves to the point he is not a liability, because his ability to call a game is overrated. Just check pitchers stats with varitek and without. Eerily similar, should'nt there be a significant difference?

Posted by QuigLewis January 30, 09 02:36 PM
  1. bad news for the sox. this was a mistake- tek is old and washed up. i just hope he can hit better than .220 this season. funny that the sox offered so much given tek had no other options!
oh well - at least we'll have 2 more years of those legendary "game-calling" skills - from a player who is a mere shadow of his former self - both at the plate and behind it.

Posted by too bad January 30, 09 02:36 PM
  1. Wow...the Sox stuck their guns....Tek gets 5 mil and we still pay 25 dollars for a hotdog The savings that Boras earned for the sox with his fantastic advise (sorry Tek) should go straight to the bottom line for the paying customers. Drop the price of dogs and beer by 2 cents each!! Now fans only have to pay $18.98 for a hotdog and small beer.

  1. I know the comments have been mixed, but I couldn't be happier about Tek resigning with the Sox. I also can understand his unhappiness about signing a deal worth half what he made last year, but with his #s and the economy and his agent, it was the best he could expect.

I am so thrilled to know...he'll be at Spring Training and behind the plate on opening day. Welcome back Captain!

    Posted by fl-panhandle-fan January 30, 09 02:37 PM
  1. Potential value is $8million-$12 million. If the sox don't exercise option and Tek does he'll get 3 million. If he doesn't reach the incentives, value is 8 million (5 this year, 3 next).

Posted by Bruce, NV January 30, 09 02:37 PM
  1. Without a decent hitting catcher, and Ortiz fading away, forget about the playoffs this year!!

Posted by jonas whale January 30, 09 02:37 PM
  1. Wait... why would the minimum value be 10mm now? 5mm for '09 plus 3mm for '10 (with no incentives achieved) is still 8mm.

  1. Real glad that this is finally done. Good deal for both sides. Now let's play ball and win another World Series. One last thing Jason, fire Boras! This is his fault!

Posted by Jeff, Coventry RI January 30, 09 02:38 PM
  1. IM glad the Sox signed Jason, but they still need to pick up a good young catcher so he can groom him. If they have high expectations for somebody in there minor leagur system, bring them up for the entire season. Let them get there feet wet in every sapect of a big league team. Fron being around the guys everyday to catching 30 to 40 games.

    Posted by fifty8th January 30, 09 02:39 PM
  1. Smart move, if they are going to bring in a new catcher, they need to have him on hand to train him. These pitchers trust him alot and do pitch better when he is behind the plate. Even if his bat has slowed down, he does make up for it in leadership.

  1. I never want to hear the adage that the Red Sox model their franchise after the Patriots ever again. That simply could not be further from the truth. Pats know when to say good-bye to players and have the the you know what's to do it. Sox insist on keeping around old players around whose best days are miles behind them (Varitek, Wakefield, Timlin, etc.). Do they honestly think that this "great game caller" is the reason for the success of Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K and that they will suddenly morph into Jeff Sellers, Matt Young, and Mark Portugal without him? Lord knows the guy can't hit anymore. He can't even make contact, let alone get a hit, and then acts like a crybaby when the manager pinch hits for him. It got so bad that Francona wouldn't pinch hit for him in Game 7 against the Rays for fear of "embarassing the captain". That selfish action may have cost the team a championship. I would much rather get rid of a guy a year too early than a year too late. Unfortunately, we will be getting rid of this guy at least three years late. Spineless front office.

  1. GREAT move on Varitek's part. Now he can get ready for Spring Training and imagine what life would've been like with 5 extra million dollars in his pocket had he not listened to Boras.

But still, lets bring in Saltalamacchia

    GO SOX IN 09!!

Posted by Mike January 30, 09 02:41 PM
  1. Um no, the value of the deal goes from $8-10m to $8-12m. if he exercises HIS option in 2010, and doesnt start 80 games, he still only gets $3m.

Posted by Jason January 30, 09 02:42 PM
  1. I glad he signed, both for him and the Red Sox. In some sense it's too bad he had to accept a pay cut but he should have accepted arbitration. In any case I'd be thrilled to make 5 mil for one year doing something I love. Not many people get a chance to do that. In the grand scheme of things he's damn lucky.

Now if no one picks up Manny then my off season will be complete.

  1. Good. It`s done. The Sox did the right thing and Varitek can now show that he is a ball player and captain of this great franchise. At worst it is basically a low cost risk to the Sox. Let`s hope he puts up some good numbers for the next 2 years and retires with us. I suggest Theo though have a plan B just in case.......

Now next season lets add 2 or more years as a coach - like the Sox did for Bill Hasselman - and keep the Tek Monster in a Sox uniform. He could be bench, bullpen, whatever kind of coach - maybe Tito's "Snack's Coach." Lord knows Tito has to have his snacks and drinks during each and every game.

Posted by lewdwinsky January 30, 09 02:48 PM
  1. It appears that this deal has been on the table for some time and the fact that Boras and Varitek have needlessly dragged this thing out to the bitter end is disappointing to say the least. "Tek" has some value to the SOX, but not a lot, and his offer reflected that. "Tek" has no value to any other team and his lack of other offers reflected that. Frankly, this isn't the "leadership" of a seasoned player who should continue to wear that "C" on his uniform.

Posted by dewars January 30, 09 02:48 PM

  1. I totally see how this is going to shape up......Sox will pick up the option for 2010, and in the offseason, the sox get either salty/montero/teagarden, and then Tek starts whining because his $2m option wont vest as he is only playing half the time....Waaaaa Waaaaa Waaaaaa

Posted by LUCIC FAN January 30, 09 02:49 PM
  1. Good. This is important. 'Tek might have lousy offensive numbers, but he's a leader on this team, and most importantly (and often forgotten here): He Makes Pitchers Better. He can call a game better than anyone out there, and he really knows how to get a pitcher to pitch at his best. Signing 'Tek has no downsides.

  1. I am happy that this is settled. Although Tek has suffered at the plate in recent years he is still a force to be reckoned with behind it. He has caught a record 4 no-hitters - that is not pure luck - it is the ability to handle a pitching staff.

Now the Sox have to find some young talent who be can mentored by Jason - to groom them for the future.

At $5 million a year I think the Sox came out on top.

Hopefully he has put his personal issues behind him and can focus on the job at hand.

Posted by Jimmy January 30, 09 02:50 PM
  1. I'm not thrilled that the Red Sox want Jason Varitek back--I can't see a silver lining. I love it that the team played "hardball" with Varitek and Scott Boras--gave up a little for not much--but I hope the Sox will pursue Saltalamacchia or Moreno. I wonder how Varitek's sour attitude will go down with the veterans--and he's got to be ready for a lot of fan hostility at Fenway this year. If he's stinking up the place by leaving guys on base in "must" scoring situations, he's going to hear it--and it won't be pleasant. And with this signing, John Henry revealed himself as man of honor--he suffered Boras during the Mark Teixeira negotiations--but accepted this agen'ts calls--great professionalism--which is more than I can say for either Varitek or his so-called agent. The only thing left for Varitek is to show how wrong we all were by submitting a "decent" 2009. Hey, .260, with 15 homers and 60 RBI isn't great, but it's way better than what he gave the Sox in 2008.

    Posted by Witch-king January 30, 09 02:50 PM

Posted by Michael January 30, 09 02:50 PM
  1. Let me get this right. Varitek, Boras, and the Red Sox now know that Varatek is not a marketable entity. So the Red Sox go and sweeten the pot! For all of us that do not make $5 million/year for playing a game, this is mystifying to say the least. Tek has probably lost a lot of repect from the fan base, and though I'm sure he'll be cheered initially on opening day at Fenway, he will wish he never heard of Boston if he turns in another mediocre to poor performance. Wish him the best, but it got to the point where we would not have been shattered to see him go. Fans got to see another side(bad) of the captain.

  1. I hope I'm wrong on this, but this little charade probably hurt Tek's cred with the fan base. There's already been damage to his integrity out there (and not ALL by Spankee fans) I think he'll need to repair that through actions with the club. I'm glad he's back, but I hope the Sox take this opportunity to sign Montero, Teagarden, or Saltalamacchia and mentor them in Tek's shadow (aside from the contract negotiating part). I don't consider making a move like that as writing Tek off, simply a reality check in preparation for the post-Tek future. Thanks Bor-a$$ for almost ruining yet another seemingly respectable player.

  1. This contract negotiation with Jason sure made it clear that baseball is truly a business and not based on loyalty and love to play for a city or team. Jason should have told Boras to settle down and make a reasonable deal with this team early on and he would have been fine with the money. Jason should also have realized that there is life after playing baseball and having a future with this organization is very important for him as the team could provide him with a fast track on becoming a major league manager one day.

    Ecstatic he stayed.

  1. They better go make a deal for a catcher of the future, because I do not think I can stomach another year of Varitek's offense now that he is signed! Teagarden for Catcher in 2010!!!!!!!

Posted by Jeff January 30, 09 02:52 PM
  1. The sox need to start looking for a new catcher to replace 'tek. A catcher that is the caliber that varitek was three years ago is very hard to find. That is why they need to spend this entire year searching for a new guy. They should get a young catcher that can hit and be under varitek's wing to learn how to call pitches the way varitek does. He's one of the best ever behind the plate. A guy who bats .215 and makes the all-star team because of what he does on the field is unheard of, but that is who varitek was last year. He's already old and he's only going to get older. His swing is only going to get slower. His body is only going to get more worn out. See what you can get out of him this year I guess, but GET A YOUNGER CATCHER.

  1. 2009 Tek + Bard = .250-.270BA, 15-20HR, 50-70RBI, 50-70R, .700+ops. Haven't had this much production from the 8 hole in years. Two good game callers. Two good receivers. Two good clubhouse guys. Two guys used to working with top pitchers (Peavey, Hoffman, etc.). Theo is already looking around for a young top-gun catcher of the future, but now has the time to get it done right. With an amazingly talented and deep 2009 team, at reasonable $$ during a recession, the Sox are in a position to be the major player in the young catcher market when other teams need to shed payroll and staff. Welcome home Tek.

  1. This is a good deal for both sides. Even if Tek continues to decline offensively, it takes the immediate pressure off of finding a replacement and gives the front office time to figure out if Kottaras and/or Brown are legit and if not to get another young Catcher in to groom as the eventual replacement. Either way, it does not seem like this bodes well for Josh Bard. Hopefully whoever splits time with Tek can add something offensively to the position. I hope that Tek has a couple of respectable years and can ride off into the sunset retiring as a Red Sox.

  1. if he had signed earlier in the off-season he would have easily had double the salary. How could he not know that the draft pick would be a problem? I blame Boras again for ruining good players and baseball. Between the tek snafu, manny not getting the big market money/interest, and the arod 2007 snafu, any chance players are finally going to catch on??!?!?!

My God, what a waste of money.
I have to laugh when you talk about the economy and saving money on salaries, then give him 10-12 mil. Then you have to torture us by watching him play again.

  1. How can you not be pleased for both the Sox and Varitek? To me his approach and character embody the type of ballplayer that most of us can admire. I am happy that he will be able to finish his career in Boston. I look for a bounce back year from Tek. He has much to prove. First off, having lived through the same thing that he is alleged to be going through personally, I know that the first year is tremendously distracting. Second, I believe he has a great deal of pride. Getting pinch hit for during the playoffs was a tough pill to swallow. Even if he doesn't rebound, I would prefer to have him on the roster mentoring their next catcher than not. Congratulations Theo. Now go get that young catcher!

Posted by EFanSoxFan January 30, 09 02:54 PM
  1. Yes, Tek's skills have declined but this is a fair deal for such a player who has been such an integral part of the Red Sox "dynasty". Tek can transition the catcher of the future.

  1. Good for Jason, but after the fans have voiced how they have felt about him..who should want to come back to that. And the media is no better. They'll turn on you at the drop of the hat. Love you one minute and stick the knife in your back the next. People fail to realize that Jason brought these pitchers through two world championships. A lot of that had to do with his hard work and dedication. THOSE are qualities that SHOULD be rewarded. I am sure that in each and every game Jason gave his all. But we'll pay millions more to Manny who had zero loyalty, let his close friends and teammates down by quitting on them and had no work ethic.
Red Auerbach once talked about certain individuals that may not have had all the ta talent

  1. I'm glad he's giving us another year. He's a great captain and is going to be movitated to come back around. And it gives us a year to prepare for life without him behind the plate. I'd like to see him end up in player development.

Posted by DPedFan January 30, 09 02:54 PM
  1. This is only a good deal if the Red Sox get a yougn catcher to team with Tek and begin the transition. If they go with Tek and Bard then in reality the catching situation, and more importantly the catchign future is in the same rough shape it was at the end of 2008.

Anyone else thinks its hilarious that the rest of the country had this story posted 2 hours ago and the Red Sox hometown paper did not get it up until now? ha!

  1. Sox should still go get someone they can develop. Even if it is someone who is decent with the glove (average) or is known more for offensive potential because now there is a mentor who may help them become better defensively or teach them how to deal with a pitching staff.... I understand that it is over rated, but a catcher still needs to learn how to earn the pitchers trust so the pitcher can worry about throwing strikes or placement.

Posted by ginzo January 30, 09 02:55 PM
  1. I think this is a great move for both sides. Tek gets probably a little more than he's worth at this stage of his career, so he doesn't look like he came back with his tail between his legs (although he really did a little). And the Sox get someone who can help mentor a younger guy if they can now go out and get a "catcher of the future", like Saltalamachia or Montero. If they don't go get one of these guys, then the move doesn't help a whole lot because we'll be right back in this position in a year or two. Sign a GOOD young catcher!!

    Posted by Bduff22 January 30, 09 02:55 PM
  1. Forget the past and let's look at reality, Jason hit 220 and doesn't have a strong arm to second base. He is 37 yrs old, time to hang up the cleets and have fond memories.

He will be around to mentor the younger catchers which will befit his years of savvy experience I am glad that Smoltz, Penny and all the new pitchers will be able to team up with him not to mention the ongoing development of Dice-K ,Lester et al.

Boston has a solid team pretty well cemented together now.

Posted by Phil Litchenstein January 30, 09 02:56 PM
  1. Thank god we have the captan back!! it would have been a huge waste to have all that talent pitching-wise and not having a capable catcher to call the game. I dont care if he hits .220 again... we just need him to be the rock he always has been behind the plate. GO SOX!!

Posted by Kaiser January 30, 09 02:56 PM
  1. Great news for the Sox. I am sure Tek regrets taking Boras' advice against arbitration, but I am hopeful that he will be happy staying in Boston. Even with his diminished offense, the slew of intangibles he brings to this team make him well worth 5 million. He is the definition of what we love about Red Sox baseball and we are thrilled that he will be with us this season and, hopefully, next season as well.

    Posted by Mark M. January 30, 09 02:56 PM
  1. The onus shifts back to the Sox to find new talent for 2011, and (baring a offensive resurgence) The Captain knows his professional baseball days are numbered. I believe he will thrive as a mentor to whomever the Sox promote as their next catcher.

Varitek may swing through pitches but he'll connect against A-Frauds and always fight for his team. Every fan should stand for him on opening day: we are about to witness the final chapters on a legend's career.

  1. This probably makes sense for everyone. For now Sox don't have to unload a young stud pitcher to get a catcher and Jason wouldn't really want to stand in line for unemployment.

Bard should give them an offensive backup and later in year they can carry a third catcher if needed. Less playing time (90 games ) might help too.

I do look forward to hearing a plan for bat improvement. Will he bat RH more often? Was last year's bat slowness caused by his head due to his divorce or was the head of the bat simply too heavy. If it was the latter, the Sox made a bad deal. If his mental head is now there, and it brings him back to .260, 15 HR,75 RBI the Sox were smart.
He still seems to be a fan and clubhouse favorite.

Posted by Dave Hornfischer January 30, 09 02:57 PM
  1. I am in contact with an insider who listened in on the Boras/Vartitek/Red Sox negotiations:

SOX: "Do you want him to shoot you now, or wait 'til later?"
BORAS: "Oh, no you don't! I demand that you shoot me now!"

This went on for some time until, finally, someone shot Boras. No one is sure who, but many stepped forward to claim credit.

  1. I would not have pulled the trigger on this deal. Call Varitek's bluff. He's gonna sit out next year and play in 2010? What is he smoking? There was simply NO market for a guy who overall hit .220 last year and didn't even crack .200 from May on. I understand and am well aware of all the "intangibles" that Tek brings. Great, as a fan I can appreciate all of them when they come paired with TANGIBLE results. A base hit with men in scoring position, a clutch hit JUST ONCE in the series against Tampa. Tangible results that show up in a box score such as RBI's, hits, runs scored. Tek's OBP was awful last year and his OPS was even worse. He doesn't hit for much power anymore and his accolades for the way he "handles the pitching staff" are getting old at this point and sound like an excuse made to cover his pitiful offensive production. Pitching and defense win championships in this league, it's been proven time and time again in countless Octobers (including 04 and 07) if there's one thing the Red Sox are long on right now it's pitching. I don't understand why everybody is looking at Clay Bucholz and Michael Bowden as "untouchables" Bucholz has had what 7 or 8 good big league starts and hasn't been able to get it together since his no hitter. Bowden is an unproven, untested great Minor League pitcher with ZERO big league experience. I'm pretty sure that I could hit .187 after May and if that's good enough to get me a guaranteed 5 million dollars than sign me up! The Sox will live to regret this move. They should have traded Bucholz and another prospect for Salty and called it a day.

  1. Okey doke. Good deal for everyone, in my opinion. Jason can stay with the staff, but at a price that doesn't prohibit the Sox from developing and integrating a younger catcher at the same time. In fact, with Varitek signed, it makes even more sense to trade for Salty (since he can learn from Varitek on pitch calling and defense without being asked to shoulder the whole load, which he isn't ready to do).

I still hope that they trade for a younger catcher to groom, but this is a significant signing for them and makes me feel better going into the season. Maybe he won't get back to where he was a few years ago, but if he can raise his average over .250 and strike out a bit less, then that would be great.

Tek behind the plate again calling the signs for Beckett, DiceK, Lester, and Smoltz..........I'll take that over offense. i hope he truly retires a red sox because we don't need to have another Fisk issue where he stays away from the team for 20 years and then is welcomed back by some new owners or something....

  1. The Red Sox were more than generous with Tek. I think Tek's better days were over 2 years ago. I just hope Tito's loyalty to his veterans doesn't get in the way of how much playing time Tek deserves. It's time for Bard or another young catcher to get the majority of the playing time with Tek tutoring and backing them up.

This helps give the pitchers the stability they need to get back to the mountaintop. Tek has been a lynchpin to this great run. If Tek has some off-field issues, what business is it of yours anyway? Get a life!

.220 at the All Star Break, Bard gets some extra playing time until the July trade deadline and the Red Sox pull the trigger on a deal for the catch of the future with

If he had done so he would be taking an enormous risk that the potential reward would not have justified. If signing for a fraction of last years salary is difficult to take, it shouldn't be - five million dollars is still a lot of money and he has no possibility of doing better - or he would have.

I take solace in the fact that at least the Sox have not yet traded a promising young pitcher, one of the most valuable of all baseball commodities. I wonder if Tek will be booed in his first home game. Five million dollars for a .220 hitter! It sounds like Wall Street bonuses all over again.

CAPTAIN of the team. he truly is a Boston Red Sox .
tek, i'm glad that you decided to come back to the team. you

  1. I love Varitek, don't get me wrong. I've been a huge fan of his from day one. But there is something that bothers me when it comes to him and contracts. Like, when in I believe it was 2004 where he was negotiating the last contract, Boston had made him a more than generous offer and he managed to complain stating that he needed to put his kids through college. Now, he gets an offer from the Sox which is just fine for one year, especially for a catcher who is losing his bat and isn't getting any older. Varitek contribution to the team is huge, he's worked with some awesome pitchers and helped develop some young ones but don't tell me that a $5M deal isn't enough. The man has already made his big money and won his championships. He should just want to stay now because he loves Boston and wants to win another ring. There's something about Boras that really makes you question your hometown hero....

Posted by Anthony Clancy January 30, 09 03:14 PM
  1. Tony - be honest...where did the "report" that Tek would consider sitting out 2009 come from? If it came from anyone other than Boras I call you a liar.

    Posted by jiffypop3000 January 30, 09 03:14 PM
  1. I hope the following three stipulations were also included in the contract:

    1. He can only hit right-handed
    2. He has to use a lighter bat
    3. He has to lose the Yaz 1967 batting stance - he can't catch up with the heat if the bat's a mile above his head.

Posted by Don Z Newburyport January 30, 09 03:14 PM
  1. Jason, Scott, Hi. I'm reality. Where else did you think you could get ANY deal, let alone a fairly decent one for a guy batting below the proverbial Mendoza line. Now, start listening to Terry and the Sox coaches. Don't be afraid to ask questions, then when you're ready or you need to there's a lifetime ahead to be spent educating pitchers and perhaps managing in the Sox system or elsewhere.

  1. Wow... so in the end Boras wound up with half the amount he could have through arbitration (yes I know the Red Sox could have released him before the season for a fraction of the contract, but would they really have?) and slightly tarnishing his client's reputation... Great job once again Boras. Looks like his antics only work in a booming economy.

Tek is clearly sharing this blame as well, he could have pulled a Dice-K (and gulp, even A-fraud) and took control of the negotiations.

Posted by Jumangi January 30, 09 03:15 PM
  1. This whole offseason has soured me on Varitek. He is 37, coming off maybe the worst offensive season of any player in baseball last season. And yet he and his agent acted like the Sox owed him something. They shockingly turned down arbitration, and had no options. And they threatened that Varitek would sit out if he had to. I wish the Sox yanked the offer from the table, and said go ahead. The Sox paid this guy 40 million dollars the last four years - they treated him right, they owed him nothing. But I guess he is back, and I'll get to watch him sprint back to the dugout like a little leaguer after he strikes out on 3 pitches.

I think this team, if healthy, can compete with any other team in the league.

  1. He can't hit anymore. He's a very average defensive catcher who can't throw out runners anymore. Yet he "handles" the pitchers well. I respect Varitek and he has been a solid contributor throughout his Red Sox career. But his importance to this team has been grossly overstated for years. He got more money than he deserved. He should feel lucky and not snubbed. $8 million for a guy who
    "handles" pitchers well isn't bad.

  1. I hope Tek has a great 2009; however, I will not be surprised to see another season like 2008. Theo has to start looking for a replacement ASAP. I found it hard to believe any team would entertain the thoughts of a long term contract for a .220 hitter. Boras certainly sold Tek a bill of goods.

What are they going to do next year when he exercises his option to stay with the team and bleed another 3 million out of them. I think the pitching staff is well versed enough to teach an young catcher what to call just by telling him what they would like to throw. AND REALLY...threatening to sit out a year or even retire. Just goes to show that he doesn't really need the money...he just WANTS the money.

Tek's a leader, and, when he does retire, I hope he coaches in the organization and maybe leads the Sox one day.

  1. The deal makes a lot of sense given Teks performance at the plate last year. Sox are staging themselves for a replacement catcher next year by giving themselves time to either acquire a big name or develop a young prospect. Fact is Tek has never been an exceptional hitter other than his last contract year. It's been average (.270/.280) seasons at the plate with moderate power numbers. How many times did he strike out last year? How many times did he strike out in clutch situations? Next time you watch a game keep an eye on how often the pitchers nod off Tek's calls. He's not calling the game for the Veterans. Not meaning to trash him or anything, but it is what it is. Management presented a deal that worked for everyone.

  1. Think it is great that Veritek decided to stay in Boston. He is a great asset to the Sox. You don't have to be a home run hitter but a player that gets along with your fellow players. He is a respected player and still has a lot to contribute to the Sox.

  1. This was the right kind of deal, fair both to the Sox and to Tek. Boras is the one who comes up looking like a boob now. Tek would probably have gotten as much money for the one year at arbitration as he is likely to get for two under this deal. But Boras grossly overestimated his player's worth, just as he has overestimated Manny's. He's either going to learn to deal more reasonably with teams or he'll be out of the business in three years.

  1. The fact of the matter is, the Sox weren't ready to move on with out Tek. The Joe Mauer sweepstakes doesn't begin yet and you can't do much better than Jason in the meantime. A few less unproductive outs in key situations and things will be just fine and in a year + he can ride off into the sunset and occasionally show up in the 'Legends Box' at Fenway and all will be good with the world...besides, Dusty's not ready yet for the Captain's C

  1. Good! I'm glad Varitek swallowed his pride and took the wisest course, probably in spite of his agent. Let's hope that if fences need mending, they will be quickly mended. I think it starts with Varitek though. You swallowed your pride, now don't choke on it. Varitek has to understand this was business. He should. You don't employ Boras as your agent, if you aren't aware of and interested in the business-side of baseball. Now though, that all this business is behind them, let them get back to what everyone wants the Sox to be doing, playing ball and winning another championship. Glad to have you within the fold again, and best wishes Jason on a productive couple of seasons. And keep in mind, 10 mil is nothing to sneeze at.

  1. In my opinion I think that despite the apparent public feuding, both the Red Sox and Varitek wanted to hammer out some kind of deal to keep him here and I'm glad they did.

While not saying it was the entire reason behind his lack of production last season, I would say that his messy and eventual public divorce had something to do with it. Let's face it, the man was distracted.

I also hope this will be wake up call to Scott Boras to stop playing hardball when he can't walk the walk. Maybe he could get away with it when representing Mark Teixeira but in the case of Varitek, and apparently Manny as well, his bluff was called and now he's trying to save face.

It will be interesting to see if the Sox and Jason Bay can put something together before the end of the season as Boras is his agent as well.

  1. I can't understand how the Nation is falling for this crap. I for one was ready to see Varitek go for some fresh blood and a fresh bat. He is old, he is out of shape, he produces nothing and he has little to offer. I noticed that he had no other offers, Boras' phone was not ringing, so what exactly were we negotiating about? It really is time to move on and I for one will laugh when Tek is riding the pine come May because they can't afford to have his bat in the line-up.

Posted by Heidi Watney January 30, 09 03:28 PM
  1. Duh...This was a no brainer!! I'm afraid the Captain may have lost some credibility regarding his desire to retire as a Red Sox given the fact he didn't act on this deal sooner. So, in retrospect arbitration probably would have given him a one year contract at around $10M, and by declining arbitration, he ends up accepting two years at between $8 & 10M? I wonder if Manny is paying attention.

Posted by Mike January 30, 09 03:28 PM
  1. Varitek platooning with a promising young catcher makes sense, but having him around with a group of second-tier catchers, none of whom will be the mainstay backstop in the future, makes little sense. Where is the long-term solution?Overall, Varitek is a liability, one that will remain so for a few more years. If you combine his catching and his working with a young catcher to teach and instruct, the amount of his overall liability is diminished. Still, his time has come and passed and keeping him around weakens the catching situation and the team as a whole. The catching position is weak now and will remain so until a number one-type catcher is brought in.

  1. I think it's great Varitek is back with the club; but it's too bad it had to be on these terms. I was really hoping he'd come to Detroit and help this ailing staff here, but as a long time Red Sox fan, I'm glad to see that he'll probably end his career a Red Sox.

His agent (Boras) really cost him a lot of money. I don't blame the Red Sox for only offering 5 million after he turned down 10 million last year. If you can't get your batting average to at least .250; you become a disability to the team. I hope he has a banner year and bats over .275 and shows everyone he's still one of the best catchers in baseball. Good luck Jason ... glad to have you back in Boston!

Tek offers much more than that, he is, to steal a jazz term, the "glue" of this team. Without the Tek adhesive, this team becomes unattached, in danger of scattering.
I have observed this team since 1965 and never has such a man offered so much in intangibles as Tek has. Whether he is 0 for 33 or 9 for 10, Tek is the perverbial team leader and a template to all future leaders to come...Good move by all!

As I see it, Sox Lost on Ramirez and Teixiera, lost on Varitek 1, Lost on J.D..Drew, lost but really won on Johnny Damon, won on Daisuke, and won on Varitek round 2. I consider a loss when you overpay to the market. Hansen was a draw,a s he was expected to be better than he was with the Sox. It remains to be seen of Boras wins anything on Ramirez, however. I hope he gets less than the 20 Mill for this year an next.

Now let's see that without the pressure to fill a starter's role, they can get a deal done for the younger catcher.

But that commitment couldn't trump the Boras advice to blow off the $10 mil arbitration offer and the subsequent management bitterness about the Texiera mess. Management got played, and Boras seriously misjudged the market for this player.

I hope Tek knows who is at the root of why he is $5 mil. lighter today that he could have been.

Varitek- hit .175 with runners in scoring position, he hit only 14 line drives all year which is the lowest among ALL qualified players. He strikes out 28% of the time and this will go up next year. He's HORRIBLE! Meanwhile the Rays and Yanks have very good hitting catchers in Navarro and Posada. Don't give me the BS about calling a good game either or his catching skills. He only threw out 22% of runners trying to steal and that stinks. I can't believe Sox paid him $5 million. It's as bad as bringing back Timlin last year.

Hopefully this way will make the transition successful for the future catcher under Teks tutelage. I wouldn't want to depend on the Red Sox getting Mauer when he becomes a free agent from past experiences (cough) Mark Texiera. Nice signing Theo.

It's still the time to look at bringing in another catcher, though. This year will serve well as a time of transition for the position and provided some important continuity for the young arms. Nice work Theo.

Yes, I am or at least was a big fan of our captain but it st least intrigued me to think what it may be like to see a .260 avg at the bottom of our lineup from someone else. I would also like to announce the creation of the "Scott Boras Malpractice Defense Fund" which I'm sure you are all dying to contribute to. Donations can be sent via Paypal.

  1. I'm glad he's staying. He's does well with the younger pitchers (all of them in fact) and is a great leader for the team. What would make this package complete would be for him to fire Boras. His greediness got the best of him, when the whole deal exploded in his face. With that said, now Vartiek's earning less than what he would've; therefore, Boras' cut of the pie is a lot less too. After this "deal" (for the Sox, yes...lol), I hope that his clients' see him for what he really is. Self-absorbed and greedy. The Sox are done with him.

The way in which he's so matter of fact about striking out/grounding out, which he does way too often now, makes me think he sees his sole role as that of a catcher. We know he can hit, and we desparately need his bat to come back - even halfway - to what it once was. WORK ON YOUR HITTING, TEK! WE NEED YOU, BABY!

In the first mention of the additional $2 million in incentives which may be available in 2010, the article states that those are only available in conjunction with the $3 million player option. At the end of the piece, it seems to state the opposite by suggesting that the player option comes "without the potential to earn an additional $2 million." Which is it? The latter scenario seems more likely, but this has all become a bit Byzantine and I will admit to being confused.

  1. At last.
Now let's get down to business. It wouldn't hurt if Theo had one more surprise up his sleeve and signed or traded for a power-hitting right hand bat. Here's one to provoke everybody - how about cutting Lugo loose and signing Nomar to be a super 10th man? He's past the day when he plays everyday (whether he thinks so or not). He can play third and first. He can DH. He could sub at SS (yeah I know about his range now). He could rotate through the lineup a bit and offer a legit stick to augment the rest of the line up. I was at the Red Sox Hall of Fame dinner back in November and spoke with Lou Merloni - Tek's good friend. He said despite what everybody hears and reads Nomar would love to come back and finish his career in Boston. Chew on that awhile Chad and Tony.

  1. You have to admit the Sox (and the fans) are treating their players generously. It was painful watching the offensive decline of Tek. I kept hoping the bat would find the ball, and the ball would find a hole, but the ball kept finding a hole in the bat. Maybe 2009 will be better......

    Posted by Dogs4Pals January 30, 09 03:50 PM
  1. Poor Tito will never sit Tek down. Plus Tek gets all gouchy when he gets pinched hit for. Tek was never going to leave. Heidi's here, and she wouldn't move for him.
Theo should have offered $2 mil this year. He still would have taken it.
    Ballplayers=politicians. All out for themselves.

  1. With this protracted contract negotiation Varitek is showing yet again that money is everything to him. He was drafted twice in college and, along with 'Ole Sleazeball Boros, both times he didn't sign. He actually sat out a year waiting for more $$ from Seattle. This time he threatened to do it again. Whether that was a bluff or not, he and Sleazeball have certainly shown that money is priority 1 (and 2 and 3...).

Posted by Dan January 30, 09 03:50 PM
  1. Have to have him. The veteran pitchers need a catcher they can trust and the young guns need his guidance. I think he can still hit too. Too many off team problems the last couple years. Now we need to get the young catcher of the future for Tek to mentor.

Posted by mdirienz January 30, 09 03:51 PM
  1. I'm frankly disappointed. He's a really good catcher, but is losing his arm and can't bat at all. We need some young blood on this team. We've made a good start with Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lowry, and a couple of others, but we need more young men. Why do you think the Rays have caught up so fast?

Posted by Kristin January 30, 09 03:51 PM
  1. Hate to say it but if he wants to have a blood sucking for an agent you have to take the good with the bad. Normally it's Boras screwing the team rather than the client.

Sadly Tek got what was a fair price for his skills. He clearly is not a $10million catcher anymore.

Posted by Royceb January 30, 09 03:51 PM
  1. As it should be, Varitek was just trying to do the best he could for himself and got caught in a quickly declining market. The Sox played their hand very well, paying respect to Varitek by paying more than they actually had to but a lot less than they would have been required to in arbitration. Watch, Varitek will have a much better year. He will have a lot less on his mind.

Schilling did ok without him in AZ. Calling a good game bullsh*t. Sabitha pitches ok without him.... so doesn't Randy Johnson. What a waste of money. Let's see how happy the Nation is when he's flirting with the Mendoza line and can't throw anyone out.

  1. Are you kidding me? People still hate J.D. Drew for holding out against the Phillies when he was drafted and call him a "hired gun" just because he fled Los Angeles for more money in Boston... but at least he's still A PRODUCTIVE PLAYER! Plus, J.D. knows who he is and he's comfortable with that. This whole "Varitek is a loyal team player who does not care about money" perspective is all smoke and mirrors. In fact, what Tek does is worse that J.D. Drew because at least J.D. Drew is forth right about it and actually helps his team win!!!!!!

  1. No, Theo isn't "da man". He's a pompous a$$hole who is ruining the good standing of this franchise.

Keep cutting corners and driving players away. I'm sure these cut-rate negotiations will breed a wonderful clubhouse atmosphere. Just like they did with Manny... worked out great last year, huh? I'm sure 'Tek is exstatic to have his arm twisted into this low-ball Captian's "deal". There won't be any animosity going forward at all...........

Yeah, keep forcing your better players to constantly take you to arbitration or work into early February to simply get a one-year deal in place for your CAPTAIN. Keep playing the shrewd negotiator "players will take less to play here" card. Let me know how that works out for you in 5 years when the Yankees have already grabbed another 2 rings and we can't even beg a Dominican player to come to Boston for fear of being Manny-ed.

It's tough being one of the few who can see how this egotism will play out a little further down the road. They think they're the Pats, they're NOT. There's no salary cap, so these types of "shrewd negotiation" only piss players off who KNOW you have the money to spend.

Does Papelbon have another one-year deal? Wow, how generous the embrace. Yeah, keep screwing over your own... it'll pay off in the long run.

  1. he's still a .210 hitter. But I don't belive it matters much. The Sox pitching will carry them in 2009 or it won't. If Beckett is healthy and either Penny or Smoltz succeed..then I believe the Sox are the team to beat NOT the dreaded Yankees. They have the hugh payroll as always and no clutch hitting or team chemistry and Rivera is another year older. Their bullpen is weak and the Sox pen is strong. Bottom line, Veritek signing to me is irrevelant.

Well, at least he calls a good game behind the plate. If you want to know how much good rapport with your pitching staff and great game-calling cost, it's $5 million.

Now we just need to trade Bard for Mirabelli again, and we have the dynamic backstop duo!!

    You are a class act...

He hit 220 last year and we were 5 wins from having a parade in October again. He was a big part of the reason we got there despite the bat.

Oh and look at what Posado is signed. 3 more years at 13 million a year. This contract is for 2 years for a total of 10 million at most. I think we did okay.

This is the best ‘Tek could do, he saves face by signing instead of retiring AND he still gets $5 mil to play a kids game

The Rangers (no fools they) would've tried to extract Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden or some other premier, homegrown arm that we should guard against all odds (and trades). Prove me wrong Tek, but unfortunately, I do not think that possible anymore. Scott Boras did wrong by you. The "Super Agent" cares only about those who can give HIM "super" money. You are no longer in that category. About time players woke up to reality? It must be time that the fans, yeah those people, many of them not making enough to even get by anymore, start to care less about these over paid prima donna athletes and their ways. I hope the Yanks can fill out their new stadium and that it trickles all the way down! Let the economic downfall begin to be felt in the sporting and entertainment fields!

  1. Awesome!! A good signing on many points: 1) I truly believe part of his struggles last year were related to his pending divorce. These guys are only human, and to think their personal lives don't impact what they do on the field is foolish. Look at JD Drew 2) They got him for half what if would have cost if he had accepted arbitration 3) This does not preclude the Sox from still making a trade for a catcher, but now they are not dealing from a position of desperation 4) Tek will be invaluable in helping groom the future catcher of the Sox, whether is be one of the guys on the roster or via a trade 5) With a max of 2 years on this contract, it plays out perfectly for the potential bidding war on Joe Mauer, who is a free agent after the 2010 season, if the Twins don't sign him.

Secondly, once again Francona will have a brain cramp late in the game when Varitek is at bat with the game on the line just as he was so many times last season with always disastrous results. It would have been nice if there had been a clause in the contract that stimpualted that he must keep his damn mouth shut and not pout when he is pinched hit for, and maybe at the same time Theo give the word to the manager that this year he is no longer a sacred cow. 1. I hope they come in third place - what a joke - they outbid against themselves twice with this stiff, excuse me "THE CALCIFIED CAPTAIN".

I don't know whether to root for The Rays or the Orioles.

The Red Sox have not won a World Series in 90 years without Manny Ramirez on their roster.

Here's some numbers regarding "THE CALCIFIED CAPTAIN" from baseballreference.com

    - Varitek hit .157 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs in 2008 (8-51) after hitting just .162 (12-74) in those situations in 2007, the 9th and 10th worst such seasons in Red Sox history (since ’74 at least). His .160 average over the last two seasons in those situations is the 2nd lowest in the majors (min. 100 AB):

    .147 – Andruw Jones
    .160 – Jason Varitek
    .168 – Rickie Weeks

    * - In his career, Varitek has had 11 different streaks of 12 or more consecutive games without a multiple hit game. 3 of those 11 streaks came after June 1 of 2008. They included a then career-long 23 gamer in which he went 10-84 (.119) from June 1 through July 3, a 12 game streak where he went 7-39 (.179; August 3-18), and what technically is a 25 gamer (that is still active) from September 7 through the playoffs (10-78, .128).

    * - In 2008, Varitek batted .119 against “fireballers” (pitchers who averaged more than one strikeout per inning), the second lowest such average in the majors (min. 60 such PA):

    .071 – Geovanni Soto, CHC
    .119 – Jason Varitek, BOS (7-59)
    .121 – Jim Thome, CHW

    * - Varitek’s .302 OBP at Fenway in 2008 was the 3rd lowest seasonal mark by a Red Sock since 1997 (min. 200 home PA):

    .271 – Shea Hillenbrand, 2001
    .301 – Shea Hillenbrand, 2002
    .302 – Jason Varitek, 2008
    .305 – Darren Lewis, 1999

    * - Varitek’s career average from Sept 1 on is now just .229 and over the last four seasons it’s .201, the lowest such average in the majors during that span (min. 300 total Sept/Oct PA over the last 4 seasons):

    .201 – Jason Varitek
    .205 – Mike Cameron
    .214 – Pedro Feliz
    .216 – Jason Giambi

    * - With the bases loaded, Varitek has just 125 RBI in 192 AB (0.651 RBI/AB), the lowest such RBI/AB average since they began tracking the stat in 1974 (min. 140 career AB with bases loaded):

    0.651 – Jason Varitek
    0.653 – Enos Cabell
    0.663 – Tony Pena

    * - Tek’s .607 OBP following a 3-0 count was the 3rd lowest in the AL last season (min. 25 such PA):

    .533 – Mark Teahen, KC
    .564 – Johnny Damon, NYY
    .607 – Jason Varitek, BOS

    * - In “Close and Late” situations in 2008, Varitek went 10-64 (.156) with 9 singles and 1 HR (.203 SLG). That slugging percentage was the 2nd lowest in the AL last season (min. 60 such AB):

    .179 – Jack Hannahan, OAK
    .203 – Jason Varitek, BOS
    .210 – Carlos Gonzalez, OAK

It was the lowest slugging percentage in those situations by a Red Sox hitter since 1992 (same minimum):

    .203 – Jason Varitek, 2008
    .207 – Alex Gonzalez, 2006
    .234 – Jose Offerman, 2001

    * - Odds and Ends: Varitek hit 5 HR against the Orioles in 2008, tied with four others (including Manny Ramirez) for the most by any Orioles opponent last season… With 2 outs and 2 strikes in 2008, Varitek hit .111 (8-72) with 45 strikeouts, including strikeouts in 18 of his last 22 such AB… Over the last 4 seasons, Varitek is 10-76 (.132) against the Angels during the regular season, the lowest such average by any Angels opponent over that span (min. 70 PA). During that same span, he is 5-25 (.200) against the Angels in the postseason… Varitek managed only a .235 average against Detroit in 2008, snapping a personal five-year streak of batting averages of .333 or better against the Tigers.

If Tek peps up at the plate a bit, great. If not, we have a great teacher and bench presence for Bard and any newcomers.

While it probably doesn't get us through to the Mauer sweepstakes, it buys us time and positioning. Good move.

  1. What's done is done. Theo couldn't/wouldn't trade for another catcher when he has had the opportunity for the past three months. Do you think that was because he did not want to? Going with the catchers on hand would not have worked out as well as Varitek.

Theo has something else going on in the background and I think that he will trade for a catcher but not until mid-season when pitching will be at its premium to the clubs in the playoff hunt. That is when we get our new catcher and then Varitek will become a mentor.

    Posted by thela_hun_ginjeet January 30, 09 04:26 PM
  1. Never again do I want the Red Sox compared with the Patriots. The Pats' are cold and heartless, letting key players from their winning teams leave when their usefulness is done. Sox continue to bring back washed up players because of what they did for them in the past even when it is clear that their best days are gone forever (Timlin, Wakefield, Mirabelli, Varitek, etc.). They don't have the "you know whats" to tell these guys to hit the road and we are forced to watch their play deteriorate to the point where they couldn't start for the Brockton Rox let alone the Boston Red Sox. Bill Parcells always said that it is better to get rid of a player a yera too early than a year too late. Unfortunately, the Red Sox choose to get rid of guys THREE years too late. Oh that's right. He CALLS a good game. He is the only catcher in baseball who calls a good game. Without him, Lester, Beckett, and Dice-K will quickly morph into Matt Young, Mark Portugal, and Jeff Sellers.

Posted by mbusso January 30, 09 04:29 PM
  1. Sad. I don't know why the Sox and most fans have felt some sense of loyalty here. He declined arbitration with US! To hand out a charity contract like this to an aged, poor hitting and defensively horrendous has-been, after he stabbed us in the back, is just wrong. We need a young catcher who can hit for average that exceeds his weight in pounds; who won't strike out or ground into a double play 25% of the time; who can throw SOMEONE out stealing (grandma on a walker charitably included); who can hit the ball over the wall occasionally. Varitek simply is not THAT GUY! We will regret this.

Posted by Steve in Burlington January 30, 09 04:30 PM
  1. People seem very polarized over this situation. About half of you are happy he's back while the other half want to see him either leave the Sox permanently or eat major crow given what a financial disaster this situation was for him. We all need to keep in mind that these players have a finite time to make their money. Nobody is going to care about Jason when he's 55, ca barely walk because his knees are completely shot. Let's all keep in mind that we do not win either championship without him. And despite any business calculation he and Boras may have made, it's very difficult to go from a hopeful $52M/4yr. contract to $8M/2yr. I'm glad he'sback

  1. I can't say I read every message but I don't recall seeing John Henry, the money man, mentioned here. And exactly what was the point and outcome of J.H. and Tek's little "mano a mano' visit two weeks ago? I know baseball is a business and I know the "business" brought me a lot of joy in "04 (in particular) and '07. But, you know what? It's still about how you treat people and John H. and Theo don't exactly shine! The price of joy is going up, maybe out of reach. Or maybe I need to adjust my expectations. You know, like I'm seeing pro wrestling or car racing.

  1. this deal will stink if Theo does not get a young catcher for the future! Now they need Montero (Dbacks) or Salt (Rangers) or whom ever they think has an upside. Tek should be used to mentor a young stud, i'm sorry but Tek has lost his skills and will continue to decline. He may start out fast say 270 - 260 but will falter as the season goes on. Tek you need to FIRE BORASS. He did you no favors, he cost you $$$.

  1. I'm glad that Jason is back, but he was forced back because of the greed of Boras and possibly Jason himself. There was no other market out there for him. The Red Sox's offer was quite generous for an aging catcher who hit only .220 last year and less than .200 after May 21 or so.

Posted by SJB January 30, 09 04:37 PM
  1. How did all the pitchers on the Red Sox make it into the major league? Beckett, Schilling won world series without him. Can't catch wakefield. Dice-K didn't have him in the world baseball classic. And the pitchers we acquired this off-season never had him. They seem pretty good. And Lester, well he didn't have him in high school, college, and the minors.

  1. I guess I just don't understand his value. What makes him such a great caller behind the plate? As often as he faced the Rays one would have thought that he would have called a series equal to or better than the world champs that would have put the Sox in the WS instead of the Rays. Time to go get another catcher.

Posted by whittiercalfan January 30, 09 04:39 PM
  1. It appears that Pink Hat Nation is rejoicing over the signing of Varitek. And why not? He's soooooo hot and now single! He just makes that uniform look so great...

I also love how people think we crushed Boras (which is the correct spelling for some of the morons commenting) by giving Tek this deal. Don't think he much cares really. Remember when we signed J.D. Drew for $70 million? Yeah, he got us pretty good on that one. And how about when we flirted with Teixeira this offseason, and he ended up with the Yankees? Fooled again! T

Any serious sports fan would know that this was not the Sox best option. Theo may be able to find great pitching, but he can't pick a good catching prospect to save his A$$.

PT right fielder) Pappy ( love ya but there comes a time when the fast balls just seem to get a little faster on you) Smoltz ( a shadow of his former self) etc. etc. etc. So adding Tek ( batting 205 and dropping) onto the pile is not going to get the RS into 1st place in the AL East. The magic is over! The run is done! Too bad MLB doesn't have a master's division.

  1. This is good news. Granted, I still remember many occasions last season when there were runners on base, with two outs, and Tek couldn't bring them home. But, baseball is not all about offense. Tek is good behind the plate, calls solid games, and is one of the veteran leaders. After the Texeira craziness, the team's philosophy next season is about all defense and pitching. The return of Tek is a vital part of making that philosophy work.

And according to one of these comments posted here he is good at cheating. I just hope he got one of the GOOD crew members as she will cost him a bundle more. He could get advice from A-Rod.

As for Tek? Great...I guess. He's a 37 year old .220 hitter that is such a "great leader" that he throws a fit whenever he's pinch-hit for. But the owners put that "C" on his chest for a reason, right?

Hopefully they can draft a good catching prospect that can make it to the bigs in 2010.

And I just can't wait for him to hit at an .118 avg during the regular season and not just during the playoffs. I can just hear Remy now, "Jason is in a slump, going 190 at bats without a hit."

Nothing was told about his terrible offense for many years, I cannot believe I did not see his .179 avg. with men in scoring position last year, and since 2007 All-Star break not plastered in the media.

If the hitters from 1 to 8 do their their job and the defence shows up every night, we're going to the world series even if Varitek hits 1.75. we gonna be winning games 2 to1 or with shutouts, that's how strong our pitching is.

  1. He is a lousy catcher and has been for years. There is no statistical basis for the credit he gets for handling pitchers. What choice did the Sox have though when they were unwilling to give up Buchholtz.

Automatic out and Francona will never pinch hit for him, even when runner on third with one out.

  1. Ok he's back and I'm somewhere in the middle of the road on it. Yes Tek gives us stability and experience working with our pitchers, but unless something radically changes, his bat is spent and his arm is just about spent. What bothers me too is that C on his chest. Not only did he get greedy, but he cheated on his wife. I'm so tired of hearing how he went thru a tough year personally. Tek wasn't struggling personally while he was cheating with Heidi Ho. Greed and cheating don't equal Captain material in my book.

Posted by Lree January 30, 09 05:57 PM
  1. Pink Sox Nation finally has that devastating switch hitter to compensate for getting sniped by the Bombers for Teixeira. Will Jason now have an asterisk after the "C" on his jersey? Will Henry try to cram more seats into obsolete Fenway Park? Will Jason Bay hit over 255 now that AL pitchers have discovered the holes in his swing? Is Lugo on roids? Only The Shadow knows.

  1. This a good signing. Veritek doesn't hit like he used...that is a worn out fact of life. But, he handles the pitching staff like no one else. I have heard a lot of nitwits out there talking out there rear ends because their faces don't know any better....The Sox need Tek! Not for hitting..we have other players to do that. He provides leadership in the clubhouse and great catching mentality at the plate. I've heard: "Bring any young catcher..he'd be better than Tek"!!! Waaaaaaaaa, boo hoo, sob sob sob......GARBAGE! You can't replace Veritek's years of experience with a young guy. And the fact is...none of these young guys swing the stick all that well either. Welcome back Tek!

Between this and the suggestions to move Youk to shortstop in order to facilitate Texiera, we look like the most ignorant fan base in America. If either of these thoughts enter your head, look in the mirror and admit to yourself that you don't understand baseball and all you are doing is hoping the laundry with the "B" on it scores more runs.

I would have tried a reasonable trade or brought up Dusty Brown and be done with it. Brown hit .290 in Triple AAA last year. That projects a lot better than Veritek's .220.

  1. It's good that he will be back. Business is business, and I'm glad Jason found a deal that suits him. However, he is no captain, and his teammates should remove the honor of the "C" from his jersey and award it to one more deserving------Kevin, Dustin, Ortiz, Lowell, Yaz, Petrocelli, Jimmy Piersall, Malzone, Momboquette, Pumpsie Green, Jackie Jensen, Radtz, or Curt Gowdy. Maybe Pinky Higgens.
This guy has lost the aura-------he's just another slut for hire. Good luck.

  1. Bard is a better all-around catcher now than Varitek. He's washed-up and has the worst agent in baseball (for Red Sox fans). Even the Yankees with their over-paid, washed up payroll lineup didn't want Varitek. I hoped he would sign with them.

Let them overpay all these washed-up former good players and finish 3rd every year. Theo should have stood firm and said take $2M or go somewhere else a while ago. He overpaid for a washed up catcher - to make some pitchers feel good. Seems like there are a lot of good pitchers elsewhere who do well without Jason Varitek. Overrated, Ridiculous logic and a bad signing.

  1. I am very happy that Tek is going to be with the Sox in (at least) '09.

I do not think that the Sox have "low-balled" Tek, as was the contention by many. $5 million is a decent deal for a 37 year old catcher who's main features are not offense or defense, but managing the pitcher, calling the game, and his amazing clubhouse influence.

    GO SOX!!!

Okay, we found out today that the GDP was down 3.8% in the 4th quarter of 2008--an astonishing number that portends really bad things; on the way to work this morning I bumped into a friend who told me she'd been laid off back in November and was still jobless--the look in her eyes brought a lump to my throat; it was another frigid day that preserved the sheets of ice on the pavement, and heightened the feeling that, at any moment the ground could give way beneath your feet in a very real, and not just a metaphorical way; and Jason Varitek re-upped with the Sox. The last bit of news was the only bright spot in an otherwise bleak day. I think the armchair general managers need to stop focusing on JV's batting average last season as the bottom line. He brings much, much more than his bat to the team. The Sox may not make into the playoffs with JV on the roster this year, but in my opinion they would have had no chance at all without him.

Let's see....take damaged goods Smoltz, Penny and Saito and add them to Drew, Lowell, Papi and Wake (older players coming off injuries). Sprinkle on Lugo and Tek and what do you get? The potential for a huge mess. This all smells of the Red Sox just being cheap to maximize the profit they are taking from YOU, does it not?

  1. Jason Mannytek 2009? Nah, I don't think so but with Boras as his agent I wouldn't be surprised to see Varitek light it up in the first half and dog it in the second. As I write this though, I don't think Varitek is that guy. He has heart for the game (no comments on his marriage - I'm not judging) . His skills may be diminished but he is a gamer, so give him a break. He's the Captain. I hope they make a trade so he can mentor his replacement. For all his recent faults (hitting) he has given it all for the club and won us two world series, if not with his bat, then with his game calling. He's earned the right to ride it out, like Yaz and like Rice..

  1. Ouch. It's too bad for solid prospects like Kotteras and Brown, who now will never get a chance to play for Boston, and for Bard, who I'd like to have seen catch 100 games (but will now be lucky to be in 50-60). I don't think this hurts the Red Sox much, but it doesn't help them.

  1. People are talking about Tek's personal life because it's been an excuse for him -- "oh, he was going through a divorce, that's why he had a bad year."

He went through a divorce due to his actions. And if those actions caused him to slump nearly the entire year, well, he ought to pay both alimony and his 2008 salary back.

Posted by PsychoTim January 30, 09 08:20 PM
  1. This is the only money Veritek deserves. Not a dime higher. If the Red Sox were smart, they would put contingencies on his batting right handed only. He does not switch hit with any consistency, or power. His best numbers as a batter come from the right side. He has a tired arm, as far as throwing out runners going to second. He has been living on his reputation around here since 2004, and hasn't done anything, but call a good game with the pitching staff. I don't know how many rallies he ended last year, but i'll bet he led the club. I think his personal life of going through a divorce probably added to his disfunctional play. Having Scott Boras for an agent didn't help his cause with the Red Sox organization.

Tek is still better than Carlos Ruiz,an awesome .219 average with an total lack of power, 4 homers. The Phillies did just fine with him as their #1 catcher.

  1. Thank God this long ordeal is over, and thank God Theo Epstein is the sort of GM that doesn't allow past bad blood (Johnny Damon, Teixeira, et al,) to get in the way of current negotiations. However, I do believe Tek needs to give Boras the boot, once and for all, and hire someone such as Ron Shapiro, John Boggs (who represented Tony Gwynn) or Jack Sands as his agent as quickly as possible, because "Pit-bull" Boras has done more damage than he resolved as far as negotiating with the Red Sox.
As for Tek's offensive skills, I still believe he can be a quality major league hitter, but he fell into some really bad habits following his knee injury in 2006, especially from the left side of the plate. It would be a good idea to have Terry Francona or Dave Magadan invite either Dewey (who served as Tek's hitting coach in 2002), or Yaz (from the left side of the plate) work with Tek in spring training to see if they can work out his flaws. In any event, I'm just glad this mess is over and we can now move on with spring training.

For example: Roy Campanella batted .207 with only 51 RBI in 1954, but rebounded with an MVP season in 1955 (.318, 107 RBI) when the Dodgers won their only WS title in Brooklyn. Varitek is definitely capable of having a decent season at the plate in 2009. Maybe not MVP numbers, but a .250 average and 60-70 RBI.

  1. What a waste of $5,000,000.
The Sox have already spent millions of dollars paying Tek for the last years of his last contract.
Tek was a key member of the two WS Champion clubs, and he was well-paid.
    Now:
    He can't hit right-handed pitchers.
    He can't hit left-handed pitchers.
He can't throw out a guy trying to steal the pitcher's mound.

Yes, he's advises, but the player makes the decision. Tek is the one who thought he was worth more and made the decision to pass on arbitration. Now he can make his money in 2 years instead of one. Like a lot of people have said on this board, he will still be doing okay with 5M.

  1. Tek's contract should include a stipulation that he wears the traditional striped stirrups instead of those stupid all-red knee socks.

  1. Cut the guy some slack.! He's caught a MLB record 4 no-hitters. he's helped the Sox pitchers be as good as the have been. A couple years ago when he was out for a time with an injury, the pitching quality went down too.
Ya, his hitting sucked last year but his catching and knowledge of hitters was great. Think of the $ The Sox have wasted on lack luster short stops over the past 3 or so years. Those players got a lot more money for less than expected results.
Good to have Tek back. He just needs to go to Batting camp.

  1. GREAT! How long til pitchers and catchers report?

  1. Come on people, Did you really want to watch Josh Bard for 130 games or so? The Sox low balled Tek and it worked. Theo and the trio were willing to pay through the roof for Big Tex, yet they mess with Tek for chump change. Sometimes its tough watching the "business" end of RSN.

  1. If this guy was a young unknown, with his stats for the last couple of seasons, we would not be in favor of giving up a couple of fungo bats and a box of balls for him. Let's be real fans, he's mediocre at best. I

  1. Dont think this is a mistake. Boston isnt going to gamble on trying to get Salty and Teg to become a full time catcher. If one of them couldnt step up as a full time catcher, then Boston will have to go to Bard!! IF you all think that Salty or Teg will be a better catcher then Veritek, then why they can be a full time starting catcher when Salty was with Atlanta or Texas and Teg with Texas!! Texas have been rotating three or maybe four different catchers in all year along last year. Still none of them are a proven major league level catcher. All of them are still struggling (one of them is 25 years of age)!! Plus, Boston already have a couple young catchers in their own farm system who are probably as good as Salty or Teg. While JV is going to play for two years, Boston will have up to two years to keep developing these young catchers, and hopefully one of them will be a ready major league level catcher for the 2011 season. If not, then we all know that Boston will go after hard at Mauer of Minnesota who will be a free agent after 2010 season!! So think Theo made a perfect move right there!!

  1. Does he still have to pay that jerk Boras. He[Boras] needs to be put down a beg.

  1. You naysayers are idiots. For any of you to second guess Theo and the gang- it just goes to show the 'what have you done for me lately' mentality around here. I'd say we are off to a pretty decent start this decade and Tek has been an integral part of the success, he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Baseball is a business, and I think after the batting average last year, the Sox did the right thing- 5 mil is a generous salary, and Tek does have to prove himself now or get used to being a spectator from the bench. It's not like there aren't deals made and players moving around once the season starts.
Regarding the whole - 'he calls a great game' argument, you gastropods aren't on the field. I trust Lester, Beckett and our other pitchers that are making those statements about Tek to make that call. Go back to your bag of Doritos in your La-Z Boys and watch the game. Until your on the field with them and are hitting .221 or better shut your pie holes.

If you are Sox fans, suck it up. He's part of the team, and our Captain. And, it's not like they made a longer deal like Posada with the 3rd place Yankees.

  1. Hopefully this will be a swift kick in the arse for Capt. I see him coming back strong, and taking a younger catching prospect under his wing at the same time. Good move Theo! I don't see JV pulling a Nomar/Manny he's got too much class.

  1. Now that this part of the saga is over, lets hope that management and Varitek can come to terms with the switch hitting status. His batting can't get any worse than it was last year so it is clear Varitek has to pick a side and stick with it. You have to figure that by picking one side and only one side Varitek has as good a chance of hitting as he did before and with increased BP from one side it should improve that side of the plate he chooses.

Lets just hope the Captain acts like a captain and a leader and does the right thing.

  1. Count me as one of the very happy Tek supporters, who are thrilled to welcome Tek back for another season as THEE GUY on the Sox. Along with Timmy Wake, Tek is the on-field manager of this ball club, and i am very pleased to know he will be part of our '09 club.
That being said, my ideal situation goes like this. It's July, and the Sox are playing leap frog with Tampa and NY for the top 3 spots in the AL East. The Twins, are 12 games out of 1st place, in 4th place in the Central, and suddenly the Joe Mauer rumors start to fly. The Twins cannot afford to resign him, so ya know he's gone after this year, so get suttin for him. Theo and company have liked Joe Mauer for several years now, he has been a guy they've coveted for a long time, and i'm willing to bet they would do what it takes to acquire him. Especially since the other guy they liked for a long time (Teixiera) not only didn't come to Boston, but he went 180 degrees in the other direction. So this Sox fan believes, by next November at the latest, Mr. Joe Mauer will be a member of the Red Sox of Boston Massachusetts in the United States of America, in the North American continent, on planet earth, in the Milky Way solar system, in this fine Universe of ours!!!!!!!! (Just in case you didn't know which Red Sox i was talking about).
Our catcher for the next 8-10 years Joe Mauer.

  1. Worst news of the off-season. The RALLY KILLER is back, now there's really something to look forward to! Take emotions away, and look at the stats. He is soooo overrated it's not funny. Offensively, he's a joke, and his defensive skills are going. Tell me, when was the last time he actually threw out someone on the bases? And if I hear one more time on how well he handles a pitching staff, I'm going to throw up! Look at Dioner Navarro and tell me how well he handles a staff, yet no ones talks about that? Just another year of popup's and long walks back to the bench. OH BOY!!

  1. How quickly some of the nation forget what he did and does for this team. He has been the heart and soul for not only the pitching staff but the club house as well. He is good for 20 to 25 more wins each year just by the way he calls a game . So he couldn't hit the last few years, we would not have won in 2004 or 2007 without him behind the plate.

  1. Reading of JV firing Borass for would be the 'icing on the cake'.

  1. We just became a National League team: only 8 guys you have to worry about getting out now. Does anyone really think he will prevent more runs than he will cost us? You can feel good about this sentimental move but it might cost us the playoffs this year. The AL East is simply too tight now to give up outs and runs. Loser move.

  1. 'Anyone who doubts Jason's ability to call a good game is frankly dumber than a box of hair"

Will you explain to me how he calls a game? I would like an average fan to explain that to me. I watch baseball all the time, and never once during the course of a game do I say, so and so is "calling a good game tonight".

"How quickly some of the nation forget what he did and does for this team"

Dude, this is 2009, not 2004. Are we supposed to give the guy a lifetime contract because he did well for us five years ago? Maybe the Celtics should bring back Larry Bird.

  1. They put in incentives for the number of games started at multiple intervals between 80-120. Are they crazy? Why pay him to get worse? Everybody has seen what happens to him at the end of the year. For many seasons he has caught 4 games out of 5. I thought Kevin Cash was serviceable for more than 1 out of 5.
IN SHORT - If they are signing him then they should have told him right off the bat that he is catching 81 games and no more. Strictly platoon. Incentives should be for average or production, not more games. Durability had not been his problem, performance has.

  1. Haha looking like the Yankees signing old washed up players. And whats up with the asian bullpen. Ok Sox fans, you have turned the corner, its starting to come apart and soon you will be just an average team with some great young guys. Papi had to put on weight after the steroid delemma he needs a way to hit 30 hr.

  1. Finally, he is very necessary. Anyone remember when he was injured in 06? On July 31, Red Sox beat the indians, but Varitek gets injured. At the end of the day, we are in first place in the AL East, 1 game up on the yankees. Varitek is out for all of August, and what happens? We go 9-21 in the month of August, and we are 8 games behind the yankees by the time september starts. Beckett was not great that year, but his worst month by far was August, he had the highest ERA out of any month in his career with the Sox at 6.38. Jon Lester in 06? Had a 3.21 era in July, then a 7.22 era in the month of August. He has caught 4 no hitters, maybe 5 if schilling hadnt shaken him off in the ninth. These are not coincedences.

  1. Boston fans who bash their players are difficult to believe. Loyalty? Shades of the Ted Williams era. Fortunately, it's only the vocal, always-angry, minority. Lighten up. 2003 was 6 years ago. We are contenders now, and guys like Tek, Schill, Wake, Timlin, Theo made it happen. Support them, or move to NY where player-hating is a sport in itself.

  1. So, I'm watching the story on TV, and while they're describing the deal, they're showing Jason hitting homers and stuff. For this past year they should show him striking out again and again. And again.

But his plus/minus is still ok. It's just that compared to the rest of the team, it's like he's a pitcher on a National League team. Who cares how well the pitcher hits? (OK, other than Babe Ruth, ha ha).

  1. It's very unfortunate that Scott Boras has been allowed to be involved with baseball in any way shape or form! If not for his whining, AKA Manny Ramirez, he would be, and should be, unemployed, like a lot of Red Sox Nation is right now. I only wish players would take the high road more often! (see PEDROIA!) Reading between the lines, it appears as though Jason finally said to Boras, ENOUGH! I'm going where I'm needed, where I want to be, where I've been treated with utmost respect and screw you! SCOTT BORAS IS THE STEROID OF ALL SPORTS AND SHOULD BE BROUGHT IN FRONT OF CONGRESS FOR HIS OWN Q&A!!!! OOPS! CONGRESS IS THE OTHER STEROID!!! SORRY!! GO RED SOX!!!!!
