FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Josh Beckett threw his first bullpen session of the spring in front of many interested observers, including pitching coach John Farrell, fellow pitchers Jon Lester and Javier Lopez, and a bunch of Red Sox minor leaguers.

Throwing to catcher Dusty Brown, Beckett tossed 62 pitches over 20 minutes. For those interested in Beckett's physical appearance (the subject of much discussion last spring), he looks in good shape.

Lester also threw a bullpen session to Brown with Farrell looking on.

"With the prolonged rest, a chance for his body to recover, it's really what he needed most is just to get away from the game, to allow his body to recoup physically, which it has done," pitching coach John Farrell said, of Beckett. "His workouts, even when he started back in with the strength and conditioning program, the early part of the throwing program, there were no issues. He comes in today and as his progression has continued he's probably more in line with where he was in '07 rather than the start of '08 large in part because he had a couple extra weeks to rest and recover."

That time, of course, came when the Sox were sent home from the ALCS by the Rays.

The new arrivals so far today have been Tim Wakefield and Lopez.

  1. Hope he's not sporting a spare tire like last spring

  1. How is Beckett going to get ready for the season if he's throwing to Dusty Brown??? Captain Soundbite should be catching him, otherwise, the season is already lost!

  1. In the video of him meeting Takashi Saito, he did look slimmer than last year but it will be easier to tell when we get some shots of him in action. Regardless, somethings to be said for these guys who care so much they get to Florida extra early (Lester, Saito, Beckett, Baldelli, Youk, etc)

  1. A return to form by Becket means 7-10 more wins.....and the new revised, improved pen means another half dozen wins...Ortiz improvement is a huge plus...the net plus of Lowell vs Kotsay in the lineup....let's just hope on that one....the net I feel is another 10 wins over last year.

  1. He can't even strike out A-Rod. I hope he works hard. If Beckett is no longer on roids and A-Rod is no longer on roids then Beckett will lose. My prediciton is Beckett is off and on with injuries and finishes 8 - 11 5.06 ERA. I hope my Red Sox win.

  1. The spare tire that Schilling had a few years back was frightening... Actually, this may be one advantage with a younger pitching staff: it is less likely that one of your pitchers will show up to Spring Training looking like El Guapo in retirement... :-)

  1. wondering why people feel the need to comment on that considering this was right in the article:

"Throwing to catcher Dusty Brown, Beckett tossed about 55 pitches over 20 minutes. For those interested in Beckett's physical appearance (the subject of much discussion last spring), he looks in good shape."

  1. Beckett looks like he's in great shape. It looks like all the early arrivals worked their butts off this off season.

  1. He threw to Dusty Brown? OMG! Could he reach the mitt? How in the wide wide world of sports can he accomplish such a feat without throwing to J. Veritek?

  1. Any word on the kind of shape Ortiz is in? or when Mike Lowell will be in camp?

  1. The reason some comments ask about his weight is because the earlier version of this article did not mention anything about it. they added to the article but kept the same comments section. Personally I hope we see the Beckett of '07 again.
