It's Truck Day eve

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff February 5, 2009 12:11 PM

Groundhog? We don't need no stinkin' groundhog!

Our surest sign of spring -- or more accurately, the surest sign that winter will eventually end -- comes tomorrow at Fenway Park when the Red Sox' equipment truck will be loaded up and depart for the club's spring training facilities in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Yes, tomorrow is Truck Day. And not a day too soon.

We're not certain if Truck Day is a tradition unique to New England, but clearly the Red Sox do it up right. The 18-wheeler will begin its 1,480-mile journey to Ft. Myers by departing from Gate D on Yawkey Way at 1 p.m. -- and it will be led in a procession by a flat-bed truck carrying Wally the Green Monster, Fenway Ambassadors, and official Citizens of Red Sox Nation.

In a new development this year, a box of e-mails containing well-wishes from fans in Red Sox Nation will also be loaded on the equipment truck by official Citizens of Red Sox Nation. It is intended to bring the Red Sox good luck for the 2009 season.

Red Sox Hall of Famer Johnny Pesky will serve as the Grand Marshal of the truck departure parade tomorrow. Pesky, whose uniform number ‘6’ was formally retired by the Red Sox last year, will ceremoniously “start” the engines of the equipment truck.

Fans who stop by and see the truck off can also purchase newly released standing room tickets for Sox games throughout the summer of 2009. These tickets are only available tomorrow at the Fenway Park box office.

Boston.com's Steve Silva will be there to document the festivities, so be sure to stop by here tomorrow for plenty of photos and video.

To whet your appetite, here is our photo gallery of last year's Truck Day.

  1. A box of e-mails? How environmentally conscious...

Don't they have a printer in Ft. Myers? Or better yet, a computer screen to read them on?

  1. I thought the first sign of the end of winter is when Jon Lester shows up in Fort Myers???

  1. I could care less, it's friekin February, let's pay attention to the teams that are actually playing right now (Celtics and Bruins) than the Red Sox who haven't even swung a bat yet. People who follow the stupid truck need to get a life.

  1. Or they could just burn the e-mails to a DVD, which can hold 1 million e-mails.

  1. That e-mail thing is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I hate "Red Sox Nation" and every mention of it.

  1. They actually printed out the e-mails and stuck them on the truck to Florida? That's hilarious.

If only there was a way to press a button on your computer in Boston and have the e-mail magically appear on a computer in Florida. That would be cool.

  1. I wonder why the Red Sox haven't marketed "Happy Truck Day" greeting cards.....yet? I always make my own and send them out. Tonight will be spent singing Truck Day carols....and tomorrow cooking the Truck Day feast.

  1. Really? A photo gallery of last year's truck day? Come on! Surely, there's more important news than this.
