FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Greetings from the southern side of Fort Myers, where the temperature is a comfortable 74 degrees as the Red Sox prepare for the start of spring training this week.

Though we haven't been to the team's training facility yet, a team source has indicated that a number of players already have arrived for workouts, which take place later this week. The group includes pitcher Jon Lester, infielder Kevin Youkilis and pitcher Josh Beckett, among others. Many of those players are currently going through informal morning workouts in anticipation of the club's first formal workout on Saturday.

One clarification: Though the reporting date is set for Thursday (Feb. 12), pitchers and catchers are asked to be only in Fort Myers on that date. Physical exams are scheduled for Friday (Feb. 13), so it is quite conceivable that many expected faces will not arrive at the team's training facility until that time.

Obviously, we will have coverage of Sox camp in online and print editions throughout spring training, with this page being updated regularly. Be sure to check back with us on a daily basis as we cover the Sox throughout their preparations for the 2009 season.

A final note: Prepare for lots of discussion concerning Alex Rodriguez and his recent admission of steroid use.
