Rodriguez tested positive

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff February 7, 2009 11:57 AM

The Yankees tumultuous offseason absorbed its most stunning and potentially destructive blow this morning when SI.com reported that Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids and testosterone in 2003, when he won the American League MVP and led the majors in home runs in his final year as a Texas Ranger.

The uproar caused by Joe Torre’s book was going to be the New York media’s distraction of choice during spring training, but this revelation will surpass that by far – the game’s best player, heretofore a paragon of drug-free excellence, may now (or eventually) stand beside Bonds and Clemens as a man who sullied the sport as a cheat and a fraud.

Despite his size (compare this A-Rod and this A-Rod) and accomplishments, Rodriguez had never been widely suspected as a steroid user, even after Jose Canseco’s accusation. In 2006, The New York Times used as the cover for its baseball preview section a painting of Rodriguez blasting a home run into a light tower whose bulbs spelled “755.” The headline to the accompanying article was “Aaron’s Ultimate Challenger May Be a Natural After All.”

The news could not only affect the Yankees, but also baseball as a whole. Attendance was bound to plummet, anyway, this season because of the nation’s economic woes. There are 104 names on that previously anonymous list of players who tested positive in 2003. Who else could be on it, and what will happen if those names enter the public eye?

  1. Boom! That's the nuclear bomb that just went off. We all suspected but I can't believe it actually made it out.

  1. Is any really surprised about this news? This just confirms what most people suspected.

  1. First off, Sox fan here. Second, the headline is idiotic. Does "The Yankees tumultuous offseason..." refer to the signing of the three top free agents available or Joe Torre's book about what we all already knew (Arod is a fraud & Cashman is a snake)? Arod is a bum, on or off of roids. He and half of MLB were on them and the league knew and chose to allow it to go on for years. This will have not impact anything. The Yankees modest upgrades are no match for the Sox superior pitching and defense.

  1. please don't use the size argument. show me any in-shape person that doesn't get bigger from age 19 to age 32. don't worry. i'll wait.

now i'm not saying that i don't think a-rod used, but you have to use something else.

  1. I'd be willing to bet that most of the Yankees have used Roids. If their teammates saw the cause and effects and were in anyways competitive they would be forced to do the same thing just to keep their jobs.I'd be checking Posada his knees are shot, and didn't he have a career year 2 years ago????Just another roid head making some Kwon.

  1. Let's be clear about the larger ramifications: Bud Selig, Major League Baseball, the owners, and the union have all been knowing collaborators in illegal behavior.

Let's not forget that that it was revealed last year that that little, incompetent spoiled brat Theo Epstein knew all about Gagne's steroid use before he signed him.

A-Fraud is just another example that the MLB is thoroughly corrupt.

  1. Once again Canseco is proven correct. Now what's left of A-Rod's public image is distroyed. No matter what you do from now on, Alex, you'll always be Barry Bonds Jr. Can’t wait to see his blushing face, pursed lips, and teary eyes as the boos--from Seattle to Boston--descend on him.

  1. Was 2003 the year A-Rod stole the AL MVP from Big Papi? Or was that 2004??

  1. A-Rod Juiced! How many Red Sox heroes from '03 and '04 are on that 104 name list? Millar? Damon? Was the '04 Series win juiced? Is Tek just getting old or is he off the juice? What happened to Poppi's pop? Was Shill's strange tendon injury in his ankle a fluke or the result of steroid use? Clearly George Mitchell will not have the last word on this. The whole sport is tainted.

  1. They should just publish the list of all the players I am not convinced that the red sox would not have some one on the list at least we would have a better since of who are the cheats and go on from there. I also think that because mlb banned this stuff since 1991 even though ther wasn't any penalties that the awards these players received should not count.

  1. Look, they're all on SOMETHING. why is anyone surprised? If someone takes juice, it's not always visually apparent. C'mon people, this isn't just the yankees who have a steroid problem, the sox do too! And I am a red sox fan, NOT a yankees fan. I wish people would wisen up to the reality that nearly all professional athletes will do whatever it takes to get an edge. Olympics? ??? anyone?

  1. As a born and raised Sox fan, i have to say that i am actually really disappointed about this. While i hate a-rod, i absolutely love baseball, and there was nothing more that i wanted to see than a CLEAN player take down that douche bag barry bonds home run "record," and a-rod is clearly the most likely favorite to even come close to that. I hate a-rod, but i completely respected him as the best player in baseball, until now. whats next, kenny griffy is gonna test positive? this sport just took a huge blow, and as a baseball fan, i am greatly disappointed that in 6-7 years when a-rod is breaking the greateast record in all of sports, it will once again be tainted.

Here in Ireland and the UK u get caught in any sport taking drugs you are banned end of story so ban ANYONE caught using for 5 years and soon it would end

  1. I wouldn't get too cocky about A-Rod testing positive. Let's be honest here. Ortiz's rise from platoon afterthought in Minnesota to all-world slugger with the Red Sox is more than a tad suspicious. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he also tested positive. I also wonder about guys like Ramirez who ballooned in size from their early years to their latter ones.

  1. People come on! What do you expect? People competing at such a level have no room to be an inferior athlete. Thats right being natural is inferior to a enhanced athlete. Yeah, you could say Aaron did it all natural but no one is natural now. Being natural in a field full of superior athletes is a recipe for failure. No matter how much of the "good olde American hardwork and dedication" you put in, a superior enhanced athlete will walk all over you.

They don't even deserve an asterisk......they deserve to be banned. They make Pete Rose who at least bet "on his team" look like a paragon of virtue. I don't intend to invest my time and especially my money on major league baseball ever again. Sincerely, Wayne Christensen

  1. Jeremy Brown:

agree. The author of this article (Adam Kilgore) has obviously never seen the inside of a weight room in his life. those before and after shots are certainly no indication that A-hole as been using steroids. Although I don't doubt the accusation, the assertion that "Despite his size (compare this A-Rod and this A-Rod)" is proof of steroids use is pretty funny. Red Sox!

  1. It's redicoulous to expect that all-stars didnt use roids in the steroid era. I mean, considering that there were no serious repremimands, why wouldn't an athlete consider using perfomrance enhancers? And please, don't give me that "it's not good for the game, bs." When the millions of dollars you are earning are at risk of being diminished because fellow players are closing the gap with perfomrance enhancers, its only natural to use them yourself: especially when there was almost no penalty. Besides, steroid use is present in all sports, and their benefits outweigh the risks ten fold for professional athletes. Completely MLB's fault because they encouraged roid use by looking the other way during the roid era.

  1. This is just sad. I've always disliked A-Rod, but he was such a natural talent when he came into the league with Seattle, it was hard not to admire him if you're a fan of the game. Now, he's in the same category as Clemens and Bonds. I think its time for Selig and all the other upper management guys that were complicit in this to go. And we need to set up a government commission to oversee performance enhancing drugs in professional sports; obviously the leagues are incapable of controlling it independently. Again, this is just a tragedy. Americans take great pride in our athletes, and now they're a source of international embarrassment.

And all along, they are not the sportsmen we think but a chemical Frankenstein. I say limit his pay to. In fact as a fan, I want my money back. Punish him, otherwise, it makes it okay for others to follow in his footsteps.

  1. Like with so many polls, I can't vote, because my opinions about rodriguez, illegal performance enhancing drugs, career marks, and the behavior of mlb, players and management, don't correspond to the answers you provide. Rodriguez's career has been marked by a consistency not seen with Bonds and Clemens. What epidemic? 104 players out of about 1100 in mlb tested positive in 2003. This is about 9%. 91% tested clean. Worried about Red Sox players on the list? No. It is well understood that Garciaparra and Damon were users. It is a shame that the entire list hasn't been published.

  1. How about we stop revering athletes as "role models" in the first place? Too many of them are self-absorbed punks and outright criminals (in the case of numerous football players these days). Brainpower and science are far more important to solving society's problems than athletic/showbiz skills. Athletic ability was mainly needed when wars were fought with swords and hunting was done without guns. Getting kids off drugs through sports is good, but sports is largely about one-upsmanship and pettiness these days, if there was ever such a thing as "healthy competition" at the pro level. Players are driven to use steroids for those very reasons. It's time for a general shifting of priorities in who we idolize.

  1. It is more and more obvious that the use of performance-enhancing drugs has been widespread over a certain period of time, 1980s or before into the early 2000's at least. What it means at the least is that comparing the statistics of different eras is impossible. For example, Babe Ruth's and Henry Aaron's home run totals cannot be compared to post-1980. I remember thinking during the McGuire-Sosa battle that it appeared too easy for them to hit home runs. It is sad, tragic even. We can no longer compare eras at all.

They all talk about how wide spread it is, so it is time society gets over it realizes this and legalizes the stuff. You can not effectively regulate a substance if it is illegal. The only way you can control who intakes it is place it in the hands of doctors with a paper trail. Cheating will always be a part of competition. In tens years, you will have athletes that were genetically modified in a sperm bank and hormone therapy treatment that makes normal men like gods. How will you stop that? Baseball will die and I say thank god, its rediculously boring anyway.

  1. The idiotic thing is that the sports writers and announcers keep referring to to the early 2000's as the "steroid era." Just because the players have found ways to mask their steroid use now, doesn't mean that the steroid era has ended. It is still alive and well and will remain alive and well as long as MLB and the players' union insist on pretending that it doesn't exist and refuse to do anything about it.

I only hope that if some Red Sox players are named RSN will react differently than the hordes of Yankee aficianados who did everything but circle the wagons trying to make one excuse after another for Roger Clemens last year, or were in complete denial that "their boy" was a filthy rotten cheater. As for A-Rod, all he has done is further inflame all those fans who already hate the guy and added another nickhame to his ensembe----A-Roids.
As for owner John Henry, when the hell is he finally going to re-issue Clemens" #21 to a deserving member of the Red Sox. To keep that uniform number in drydock is an absolute disgrace to all Red Sox fans.

"In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated."

  1. Ummm... Keith... It affects the Yankees because A-Roid is now a Yankee. If he was with the Diamondbacks this year it would be their issue. There is little doubt that he continued doing drugs while in pinstripes. The whole friggin lot has ruined America's game, and Selig has been the captain of this Titanic.
This is what happens when the player union becomes too strong. Baseball is afraid to impose harsh penalties because it fears another strike. "Joe 6-pack" can't afford to go to more than two games a year with his kids (if that). Let 'em stike. Let the whole MLB burn to the ground!
What will be reborn in it's place would be a purer game. Hopefully one that the average fan could actually afford to attend! Baseball itself will never die. It is played on too many sandlots for that to happen.
We should be spending out millions of dollars on better education for the next generation, on better healthcare, and defending our contry.
We shouldn't be giving it to a bunch of whining idiots who no longer play for the love of the game and complain because they're "only" making $15m this year and need to make more off of the backs of the hardworking fan.
    WAKE UP!

Kirk Gibson won the mvp in '88 i think his line was something like .279 ,25,76. today they expect a catcher to do that.those stats would make him no more than an average player in this current climate. and if you think mlb doesn't know anything about this wake up. it's money in there pocket. do you honestly think they want the supposed best player in the game to be exposed as a fraud?

  1. A-Roid WAS a scumbag liar that at least the Yank lovers could say was gonna break all of Bonds or McGwire's records, ha! All that money and no rings! What really makes me mad is the fact MLB tried to sweep this under the rug and legally there are some serious laws being broken! Not fulfilling a warrant issued by the federal gov. should be sending MLB officials to jail but hey they'll buy their way out of it or just be slapped on the wrist. Of course if I witheld evidence from a search warrant in a federal drug probe I'd be looking at least 10 years! MLB is killing itself and anyone that thinks it's wrong to out these players is showing no respect for all the players that legally broke records! yeah, even Sox players!

Posted by DMONMCD February 7, 09 03:43 PM
  1. It's pretty sad that owners knew about these test results and they STILL paid crazy money for the likes of an A-roid. Look at the Brewers; they paid $10M for a fraud closer who couldn't close without drugs pumping through his body. The team even knew about it publically, but the mindset was so entrenched, that they still wasted a ton of money for the merits of steroids.

If Selig is so tough, then let's see him erase these records. Oh yeah, he was one of those owners who ignored the steroid use for the bottom line and then played stupid, of which he really didn't need to play.

Baseball is the national shame in a time when we need something to cheer about. We are so desperate for people of sound character that we embrace a drunk and druggie because that's all he is after winning 14 gold medals. Thank God he didn't use steroids and only uses stupid judgment, on a regular basis, that might get someone killed in a car accident. Yeah, that's my hero.

It takes a plane wreck for people to see men and women of real character and integrity do exist. It's funny how money and fame weren't required for them. Forget Hollywood. Forget sports. They are losers. Your real hero is the person with integrity and courage to do what is right when no one cares to even look.

Posted by ron February 7, 09 04:45 PM
  1. I'd ease up on the comments about cheating and all that for right now at least and think about the fact there are 104 guys in this with A-Fraud. If his name is out, and it has to be the biggest because there is none bigger, then the rest wil be trickling along at some point. This is the 2003-2004 timeframe too which is when we beat them and broke the curse. Out of 104, how many are Sox? That won't feel so good if it happens. Overall it's also bad for the game too.

Sometimes to get over a hump (as far as building muscle mass) supplements are the only successful way to do so (some leagal, many illegal).

  1. Guess what, it doesn't really matter, because in 2003 Steroids were not specifically banned. So A-Rod took a substance that was perfectly legal to do so at the time, he's no more guilty than other Athletes that did something to improve performance.
Baseball needs to do what South Africa did ( Truth & Reconciliation process), and have hearings to determine who did what, when, with no repercussions. Then we need to put it behind us and look to the future.
I don't support steroid use, and do not condone it, Yes I think Mike Greenwell was probably beaten out on the MVP award by someone who took serious health risks to "improve" themselves. Let's get it out in the open, look at the problem and put it past us.

    Posted by Dennis A February 7, 09 05:23 PM

Posted by Dave February 7, 09 06:16 PM
  1. There needs to be an "All of the above" option on that survey.

I definitely think that A-Rod's numbers should be questioned. Here's a man who tested positive for steroids the year he was named MVP, and who's career numbers get him a ton of attention and money. If any part of those numbers are steroid-inflated, that's a problem. And I think that there's no reason to use steroids, hormones, or chemicals to be a better player except for the money. I think he's a cheat, just like Clemens, Bonds, and the rest.

At the same time, I DO think that this is a problem throughout baseball, and we're not going to address it just by whining about A-Rod. There are plenty of minor league players who have been penalized for steroid use, and in more recent years than 2003. We need to address the entire issue; A-Rod is NOT unique (or at least not because of his steroid use).

And finally, since I do believe it's a wide-spread issue, and given the fact that there are more names on that list, chances are that at least one player in our organization might be implicated. Right now, it's easy to taunt A-Rod or talk about how Clemens is a cheat. But if one of our own has been doing the same thing, we have to hold him just as responsible. I hope I'm wrong, and that not a single Red Sox player, or minor leaguer, is implicated, but it IS an issue that is pervasive in this sport.

Posted by sabend February 7, 09 06:49 PM
  1. "So A-Rod took a substance that was perfectly legal to do so at the time"

No doufus Dennis A. It was illegal in the USA. MLB banned anabolic steroids in 2002 but didn't have testing or penalties.

  1. Glad to see the Mitchell Report had such a positive effect on baseball. Maybe that is the reason George Mitchell is now working on Middle East Peace!

    Posted by Rocketman3 February 7, 09 07:02 PM
  1. First and foremost, this is not a Yankee/Red Sox issue. Any fan of either team who believes that the Giambi brothers, Sheffield and Arod are the only juicers to play for the 2 teams is extremely naive. Throwing shots at the Yankees as a team over this only makes one look hypocritical and in denial of our own unaired dirty laundry. Just remember that while the Mitchell Report was embarrassingly incomplete and biased, we had Mitchell watching our backs.

One important thing that it seems everybody in America is not getting is that while MLB collected over 1,200 tests in 2003 with 'only' 104 coming back positive (wink, wink), you can only test for what you know is out there. Victor Conte put it best when he said that there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of other Victor Contes out there designing new and undetectable PEDs in labs and basements around the world. The BALCO drugs were basically accidentally discovered, and since there were no known samples of some substances to test against, an athlete would naturally come up clean on a drug test.

Every sport has been heavily tainted by PEDs in the last 2 decades. Most of MLB players flew under the radar in the PED inquisition simply because the average player puts up pedestrian to very good stats. I look at a guy like Shane Spencer as a perfect example of someone who probably would have never made the bigs were it not for PEDs. He came from nowhere at the age of 26 to hit 10 HRs in Sept 98 and flamed out quickly. There were hundreds of other marginal players who got the artificial boost to become Major Leaguers. Pitchers and catchers, who benefit the most for their muscle recovery advantages, flew the furthest under the radar (except I-Rod) since everyone wrongly thinks that the guys with the big HR #s are the biggest juicers. Guys like Arod and Bonds already possessed incredible God-given ability that was additionally enhanced by the drugs they took (or take).

Fairly or unfairly, MLB has been the lightning-rod sport in the steroid controversy but I am very confident that over 80% of all world-class athletes are tainted. Its the only way to compete on a level field today. Steroids don't just make you stronger, but also improve vision and muscle-twitch reaction which translates to body motion speed. How today's NBA and NHL don't face the same wrath as MLB blows my mind. Today's players are houses compared to 2 decades ago. I see my favorite college basketball players get a foot wider before their first season begins in the NBA. The NFL has been a bad joke as far as drug testing for more than just the past 2 decades. Anyone ever link roid rage to the obscene amount of off-field arrests and problems in the NFL and NBA? Even the LPGA gave their players 2 years to clean up their acts since they announced drug testing for the 2008 season in 2006. We watched Anna Sorrenstam turn into a man and the rest of these 'women' get bigger and bigger. The PGA's courses are now 30 yards longer per hole. Trust me, it isn't because of Tiger Woods, it's the juice.

Arod will face a lot of venom for this like-we-didn't-already-know-it moment. Unfairly, the majority of the rest of the players in the game get a pass for not getting caught. There will not be much criticism from the players in the game since they too are guilty and can't get caught up in the hypocrisy. More than the fans, its the history of the game that was cheated, cheated right out of the record books

So if he were again to hit a 9th inning homer off of Paps this year that puts the Yanks ahead in a game, is it followed by a collective Fenway groan and exodus from the park? Or do 35,000 fans stand up when he goes into the dugout ... and the next inning comes out to play third, only to be serenaded with deafening chants?

With each inflated stat comes an athlete who receives and inflated contract. We are the ones who end up footing the bill. Not the owners, they just pass along the expense to us hard working HONEST fans and turn a blind eye to the illegal use of PEDs. For the above poster who justifies that it was no illegal in 2003, open your eyes. It is illegal in the USA where these players happen to live and work, so it was illegal. 1. As for owner John Henry, when the hell is he finally going to re-issue Clemens" #21 to a deserving member of the Red Sox. To keep that uniform number in drydock is an absolute disgrace to all Red Sox fans.

SeaBeach Fred, I couldn't agree more. Who in Boston cares about Clemens? Just another meat head who left town a bum instead of a hero.

  1. Will A-Rod be suspended by the Yankees? Hey, old man Steinbrenner is a convicted felon, so what the hell

  1. Guess that leaves Hockey as the only sport left that players take pride in their league-MLB=Juiced-NBA=tattooed Thugs and NFL=Gangstas w/ guns

NHL= quality civic leaders who help out w/ their community (except for what happens on the ice stays on the ice)

Every league has cheaters but MLB has encouraged for decades

  1. unfortunately for baseball and its fans this problem has been going on for quite some time. Whether or not they were marquee players remains to be seen and really is a mute point. Sports athletes because of their competitive nature have always and will always look for ways to get an edge over their opponents. The real problem is that baseball knew and decided to look the other way because these players were making the league huge amounts of money. until the powers that be are able to ensure that a "zero-tolerance" policy is in effect this issue will never go away.. If i knew i would be banned for life for 1 offense i wouldn't chance it

  1. #93: "So A-Rod used 'roids? Big freakin' deal. He and 90% of MLB players have used and are using them. No one cares but jealous loser redsux fans (like the motormouths at ESPN) trying to make a little hay with this non-news. The playing field is level because they all do it -- especially that truckdriver redneck catcher for the bosux. What a loser he is."

As opposed to the power hitting (hmmm?), Dumbo-eared, no chin catcher the Yankees have?

  1. This is not a Yankee/Redsox issue or chanting Aroid at Fenway in June, its much Bigger thatn that!!!! Baseball is trouble and they better do something quick!!!

  1. Bud Selig is a joke! Why has it taken almost 6 yeasrs to get this news. Selig has buried his ignorant head in the sand and wished this steroid issue would just go away. He's displayed NO leadership whatsoever. He made $17-18 MM last year, please tell me For What? I do agree with one of the comments above that a few Red Sox players sure seemed guilty to me and Nomar is one of them. His pattern of injuries and lack of HR production when he should have been in his prime look very suspicious to me. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Manny's name came up in the future. His erratic behavior is enough to raise suspicions.

  1. "Poor pathetic SUX fans - I don't even need to say it do I? "

Poor insecure Yankee fans. They have SUCH a neurotic need to show up, over and over, on Red Sox blogs to whine and bleat.

A-Roid took (takes?) steroids. And you still have a third-place team. Deal with it.

  1. In the long run this is a bigger issue than A-Fraud and the Yankmes, but not now! Right now, it's all A-Fraud and the Yankmes, all the time! Let the abuse begin! Scumbag team with sleazeball cheating players! Words to live by: YANKMES SUCC! A-FRAUD SUCCS!
