During his seven-plus seasons with the Red Sox, Manny Ramirez was often perceived as a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in an extra baggy uniform.

But a new authorized biography that hits the shelves next month attempts to offer some insight regarding his background, his shy personality, and what makes the quirky slugger tick -- as well as his version of the events that led to his tumultuous departure from the Red Sox.

Reporter Shawn Boburg (formerly of the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune) and UMass-Boston professor and clinical psychologist Dr. Jean Rhodes co-authored “Becoming Manny: Inside the Life of Baseball’s Most Enigmatic Slugger.”

Becoming Manny cover
("Becoming Manny" out in bookstores in March)

The book offers Ramirez's perspective of his now-infamous incident with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick that set his departure from Boston in motion. Ramirez shoved the 64-year-old McCormick to the ground in the clubhouse in Houston after he was unable to fulfill the player's late request for additional tickets.

"Jack disrespected Manny for many years and on many occasions," Ramirez's former agent Gene Mato tells the authors, according to a report this morning in the Boston Herald. Ramirez's wife, Julianna, offered a similar account.

"Jack’s response was very rude," she said. "And Jack had a history of insulting Manny in front of the other players."

Julianna Ramirez said the incident opened the door for the Red Sox to trade Ramirez without fear of backlash from the fans. "They gave him up to the press instead of protecting one of their own players," she is quoted as saying. Thus, Ramirez "was hard-pressed to give his best to a team he knew was eager to cast him aside," according to the authors.

The book also suggests that not all of Ramirez's teammates were eager to see him go. Here's one excerpt from the prologue, as posted on publisher Simon and Schuster's website:

"There is consistency in his teammates' and coaches' characterizations of him as a hardworking team player. He was, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "everybody's little brother" in his early years and, recently, has been more of a role model and source of support to younger players than he's generally credited for. "He was a mentor to me," says Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo, three years his junior. "When I went through tough times, he knew that I had trouble sleeping so he would call me early in the morning, when he knew I'd be awake, and he'd say, 'Look, don't worry about it, man. You're going to do good today.' That meant a lot to me. There's no one like Manny."

"To be honest," says Pedro Martinez, "I don't have enough kind words to say about Manny. I think he's misunderstood."

The website for the book -- becomingmanny.com, naturally -- has posted transcripts of interviews with some of Ramirez's teammates through the years. A few comments of note:

David Ortiz: What can I tell you about Manny? Me and Manny was good friends. He was like my brother here. We pull each other up. A lot. And, I’m not going to lie to you. I miss him. I was with him so much of the time, and I learned from here. Believe me, coming here and watching Manny, the way he works, he teach me a lesson. I came up through the Twins, and when I got here I thought, I’m gonna watch the superstars, see how they work and Manny was the one that I watched. He showed me how he worked and I started working with him and believe me, my whole career changed. it was a lot of work. I never worked like that before in my life. I got my --- kicked. Manny is an animal. He works like you’re not gonna believe.

Trot Nixon, on whether the media's perception of Ramirez is accurate: I don’t think so. I think a lot of the public’s image is misconstrued. The media really wanted to talk to him and they didn’t get anything so . . .

Mike Lowell: I have a theory on Manny. He has a mentality, and I don’t know exactly what it is. But I believe all pro players have some case of either ADD or OCD. You almost have to hyper-focused, right? I think he turns all his focus into the batting cage. So sometimes he’s not as focused defensively as he is in the batter’s box. He kind of lets it go and I think that’s what people like to see.

  1. There is no one in the world who does not have someone to say some nice things about them.

Everyone has a good side they share with at least one person, but the judge of true character and citizenship is how one treats strangers and how low you can go in stressful situations.

Unfortunately for Manny, he is judges in the same way.

  1. Great. A guy who never said a word is writing a book. Just what we need.

  1. I find it very funny that the people chosen to be quoted about liking Manny and that he is a stand up kind of guy... Are both people who are no longer with the Red Sox Organization and have nothing to lose by making comments that contradict the Manny we have seen on the field... The Manny who does not run out gound balls watches a fly ball no go quite as far as it was expected and only getting a single rather than a double and my personal favorite, urinating in our beloved Green Monster. I have nothing against Manny as a Baseball Fan, but as a Red Sox fan, give me Jason Bay anyday over Manny.

  1. "Jack’s response was very rude," she said. "And Jack had a history of insulting Manny in front of the other players."

Aha. So - Jack had it comin'!!!

"They gave him up to the press instead of protecting one of their own players," she is quoted as saying.

So, the RIGHT thing for the Sox to do was to cover this up. Those conniving bastards!

Thus, Ramirez "was hard-pressed to give his best to a team he knew was eager to cast him aside,"

Somewhere, Ted Williams is rolling in his grave. (Well, all of him except his head. Ugh.)

The book also notes that not all of Ramirez's teammates were eager to see him go... "He was a mentor to me," says Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo,.. "To be honest," says Pedro Martinez, "I don't have enough kind words to say about Manny. I think he's misunderstood."

So they had to go to a player (Lugo) who the Sox regard as a big mistake, and a FORMER Sox prima donna (with a well-known grudge against the Sox) to get expressions of support for Manny.

That's IT? That's the best they could do in defense of this clown? And this warrants a BOOK? It barely warrants a blog post!

  1. No explanation for pushing McCormick to the ground other than he was rude. What did he do that was so rude? Well it doesn't matter because I think we should all live by that shinning example. If someone's rude, push them to the ground. Works for me.
You know, that sure does explain why a team trying to win a championship would trade a future HOFer and would pay his entire salary to that team. The Red Sox front office, man they sure are sly.
Also for the record I think even the casual Red Sox fan knows that Lugo has a man crush on ManRam.

  1. "Jack disrespected Manny for many years and on many occasions"

Hilarious. This from the guy who had no qualms about disrespecting opposing pitchers by standing at home plate watching his home runs, disprespecting the game by failing to run out ground balls, disprespecting his adopted homeland by refusing to visit wounded veterans, and disrespecting the fans by refusing to play when he was perfectly healthy.

  1. The supposed best right-handed hitter of all time is unemployed and I'm sure that has something to do with his reputation as a petulant, snotty, spoiled brat of a man-child. Sounds like damage control to me.

  1. Funny stuff...i just read in "Feeding the Monster" that Manny asked for a trade on the first day the The Henry-Werner group owned the team. Manny couldnt tell the truth while he was here, why start now that he is bitter, unemployed and out of Boston? Too many of these books exist for a quick buck. It is a shame that we will probably all read the dang thing too. One day I hope I have the chance to throw away 45 million over 2 years or 25 million over 1 year. Amazing that he decided that he knew english well enough to get a book done about him. Send the guy to the Nationals or Pittsburgh!

  1. What he used to be and what he's become are apparently two different things. I cannot get past the fact that whatever happened between him and McCormick the simple fact remains that the Red Sox wanted him gone so badly they were willing to pay him big money to play somewhere else. Even while he was putting up great numbers for them. I think the book is an attempt to bandaid the image that people have of him by trying to portray him as the victim and I simply do not believe that. Poor 20 million a year making Manny couldn't get all the tickets wanted and an old man disrespected him. Poor Manny let's pay him to play elsewhere

  1. It's one thing for Manny to push down McCormick, which is terrible in and of itself. But for Manny to try to rationalize the incident is terrible. Does anyone really buy the McCormick story that he was always rude to Manny? Really? Manny should simply apologize for his actoins and move on. I hope no Red Sox fan buys this book.

  1. Manny has made more money in this game and he gives nothing back to the community. If someone knows of Manny giving money to charities please make me aware of it because as far as I'm concerned he is one of the most selfish players to wear a MLB uniform. I hope it mentions in the book how he was breast fed until he was 4 years old. That expains A LOT.

Posted by Mhaze February 11, 09 04:02 PM
  1. I hope people are willing to listen to Manny's side of the story. Especially because people seem happy enough to believe everything the Sox say about him. When you know you are dealing with an emotional person, and you disregard their emotions, you have to accept some responsibility for the consequences.

That said, pushing the travel secretary was over the line, and is indefensible. But it's hardly the worst thing a professional athlete has done. I think we need to remember that Manny had his faults, but has been far more vilified than players who cheat, beat their spouses, drive drunk or do drugs.

Posted by callmescraps February 11, 09 04:11 PM
  1. I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that because a 64 year old man disprected Manny that it makes Manny actions ok. For one the Red Sox paid Manny huge dollars to go play somewhere else and released him from his further obligation all while he was putting up great numbers. I still strongly believe it goes far further than we all know and this books attempt to put a bandaid on the poor image of Manny Ramirez will only have a minor effect at doing so. After all you don't pay one of the best bats in baseball to play for someone else just because he can't get along with a 64 year old man that works for the team.

  1. HOLD the phone a minute! Is Manny saying he WANTED to stay in Boston? Even after the past 8 years of him BEGGING to be traded? Demanding he be put on waivers? OK, don’t get me wrong, I love Manny and probably always will (until he dons the pinstripes…then he’s dead to me)….but I can’t see the FO NOT protecting its Brand. If Manny was happy in Boston (and he gave more interviews saying he was NOT happy than he was happy) and things were going great, I’m sure the FO would have covered up or downplayed the Jack McCormic episode. Does Manny address the Youk incident? Does he address the “call in sick during a Yankee series only to be caught in full health drinking in a bar with a Yankee player?” episode? Henry loved Manny and did not want to get rid of him. Maybe Jack was a disrespectful jerk, but why only to Manny when there is a 40 man roster?

OK, I’m not trying to blast Manny – but I’m getting tired of the “run him out of town” crap when he begged to be traded almost every year. But I still love him.

  1. Enablers! These people are Manny enablers! McCormick probably dissed Manny because Manny deserved it. No need for a 64-year-old to suck up to a spoilt brat like the rest of the team probably did just to get Manny to act less like an idiot and more like an adult. Manny being Manny has always been about doing what he wants and McCormick wouldn't take that from him, simple as that. Too bad it took Manny bailing out on the team (and those 20 mill options) for the rest of us to see it too, especially when Manny was hustling all over the field for the Dodgers. Two jerks I'm glad are not in Red Sox uniforms: Manny and ARoid, he of the THREE YEAR juice bar.

  1. Yes, how original. Another, poor, insulted, and maligned...but, very, very rich Baseball star telling "his" side of the "story". Right...McCormack insulted him and his fragile ego. So that means you take physical action against a man twice your aqe. Mmmm hmmm. Way to go Juliana..stand your man. Admirable, but not too credible really. My wife would say whatever she thought would make me look best too......not very original. What about all the other crap he pulled while he was here? What about all the other players he let down more than once (and prior to the pushing incdident) because of his selfish ego? The man is a boy. So is Martinez..another malcontent who is only too happy to disparage the Sox any chance he gets. What a boatload of oonsense. I won't be buying it..thats for sure.

  1. People, listen to the interview. This is not a book BY Manny. This is by a reporter and professor/psychologist. It sounds like it in no way excuses Manny's behavior, a point she made on the Dennis & Callahan show several times. It's just an attempt to answer the question: "What's with this guy?" I look forward to reading it.

I loved the first 7 years of Manny being Manny, but then it took a real ugly turn last year. He had to go. But I think it's WAAAAAY too simplistic to just say he's an a-hole, etc. He's a complicated individual.

  1. Here were go, I'm sure Manny portrays himself as the poor innocent victim here. With all the quitting he did in Sept in previous seasons, no one ever got a free pass more than he did. Now he's finding out other teams took notice and aren't knocking themselves out to sign this guy. What goes around comes around.

  1. Of course it had to be an "authorized biography" because we all know that he isn't smart enough to write it himself. He probably cannot read it himself...who am I kidding. I wouldn't waste my hard-earned money on that fiction. I am a huge Sox fan, and I never liked him. One bad apple spoils the bunch. He was like a cancer. I'm glad he's gone. We are better off without his "has been", "crumby attitude", "poor example for our children" presence on the team. Good riddance and take your silly book to the streets of New York...those fools are starving for something that trashes the Red Sox and takes A-Roid out of the spotlight. There's another one that I am glad we let get away.

  1. Of course McCormick disrespected him! Manny wanted free tickets. McCormick didn't give him as many as he wanted (as the brain dead McCormick probably thought that Manny could afford to pay for the whole stadium's attendance on any given day). How could ANYONE tolerate THAT? I'm surprised that Manny didn't baseball bat McCormick in the face like he obviously deserved. The nerve of some people blaming Manny for kickin' the crap out of that a-hole. Sheesh!

Manny is not a complicated individual by any means...he's a dumb as they come. I wouldn't be surprised if Manny is on that list of 104 steroid users too.

  1. Puh-Leeze! Nice attempt at some positive PR to repair his damaged image as a quitter, crybaby and all around bad teammate. Is he hoping this book will get him the unrealistic offer he's still looking for? Greatest hitter in baseball, but damaged goods, and a very expensive risk to any teams chemistry, except maybe in the Bronx Zoo.... He'd be an afterthought in the city that proudly touts an admitted steroid cheat as the face of their franchise. And let's take anything that Pedro says with a large grain of salt, speaking of crybabies...... Anyone that buys this book is a sap.. The "Babe Ruth Story" with William Bendix was more factual than this pile.....

  1. Manny quit on the Red Sox........ that's worse than steroids, worse than pushing McCormick, worse than just about anything you can do in baseball. He was getting paid $20M a year, and HE FREAKING QUIT!!!! It's not even about the money. It's about the team, and the other 39 guys out there busting their collective arses and this guy quit. It was so bad, the Sox paid someone $7M to take him. It's a tragedy, and my guess is that it was more Boras than Manny. And what did it get him? He'll likely get about the same as if the Sox exercised their option on him..... if he's lucky ....... and now his whole character is in question and nobody wants to take a chance on him for the long term. Nice going Manny. Nice going Boras.

I hope the Red Sox keep losing until they are punished enough for trading Manny, the whole Red Sox fanbase is just stupid- we all loved this guy for years- little kids called his name and wore his shirts and then he gets traded away and its like he is the devil and never helped the Red Sox win TWO 2 YES TWO World Series. I didn't see any WS win last year did you? I saw the Dodgers getting propelled from behind by one person's hitting who was that again- OH YEAH MANNY. Where ever he ends up next season they will be my team. 1. "complicated?" Manny's not complicated. He's got a learning disability. He has difficulty understanding other people's point of view, he doesn't understand consequences, he has difficulty with problem solving, executive functioning and putting thoughts into coherent sequences. Amongst other symptoms.

On top of all that, he has been handed everything on a silver platter since he was a wee lad. He doesn't know how to work for anything, how to be gracious and appreciative. He is a perfect example of what happens to a kid who is passed along in all aspects of young life because of his $$$ making talent. He will never change. Its too late. I am so glad he is gone, he is disrespectful to his teammates and those who pay his salary (we, the fans).

  1. The nearly universal opinion of Manny is that he is an enigma. I doubt that this book will change that. What I find most fascinating about him is that he has characteristics that when he is doing well are widely applauded and when he is doing poorly he is condemned for. His abiity to seemingly care little about what is going on around him comes to mind in this regard as does his nonchalance. He was a lot of fun to watch and I was sorry to see him go, but I have no complaint with the Red Sox either since I like everyone else do not have first hand information. Lets GO Jason BAY! And I am sure that this book will be a lot of fun to read regardless of its content. Manny is fascinating and there is no gettiong away from that

  1. He's a future Hall of Famer and a truly unique character. This sounds like a really interesting book. I look forward to reading it.

  1. The Boston press was ruthless to him. I have watched some of the writers on Tv during interviews and commentaries and am embarrassed at having them as so-called local experts of Manny. They act as though a player should be additionally well rounded socially and personably to be worthy of praise. I praise Mannny on his hitting skills and the many memorable baseball moments he gave us in Boston. Thank you Manny. You are truly one of the greatest baseball players and entertainers of all time. Thank you, too, for your huge contribution bringing the championship to a city that had only been wishing for it for 86 years before you arrived.

  1. a pop up book? you wrote a pop up book? that's the cutest thing i've ever seen!!

  1. Get over Manny, Red Sox fans. You're like the ex-girlfriend who says she's over her ex to each boyfriend, then trolls online looking at his myspace account.

  1. How about when he attacked YUKE in the dugout? He wanted out so bad he attacked a teammate.

Posted by Steve February 11, 09 08:33 PM
  1. Authorized biographies are nothing more than fluff pieces. This is Boras' idea to reinvent Manny as some sort of misunderstood, sympathetic character. The fact is he is a talented hitter, but I wish talk raidio and it's moronic callers would stop using the word "savant" to describe him. There is nothing scholarly about this boob! A radio host uses the word Savant, then every one of their sheep calls in using the term as if it is gospel!

  1. Commenting on Red Sox fan from Frammingham, your an idiot. Those people that call him a stand-up guy brought the sox a ring, and if manny was on this years team, they would of won, because manny give ortiz a cushion that no one else can. Besides , Jason Bay is the most boring player to watch

  1. "Does manny not have enough money? who in their right mind would want to read a second graders book?"

I don't know of too many clinical psychologists who write "second graders" books.

It is amazing that all of you who clearly already have your minds made up about Manny take the time to read this article and write a post. It is like a support group for people trying to convince themselves the Sox will be better w/out one of the 10 best hittlers in the history of baseball.

  1. You were not judging him while he was hitting up a storm on the way to titles in
04 and 07. Hey Boston, get of it

  1. Yeah and didn't Manny sneak out Fenway Park in a gorilla suit when he was negotiating a new contract because he didn't want to be noticed? Get over yourself Manny! Oh wait that was Sox GM Theo Epstein. Well didn't Manny huck nerf balls at CEO Larry Luccino's head on the field at Fenway while dressed as Wally The Green Monster? Oops that was Red Sox Charman John Warner. And doesn't Manny always walk around like he's auditioning for the lead in an Off Broadway Production of "Rain Man." Come to think of it that would be more club owner John Henry's style. Well didn't Manny double cross Bronson Arroyo with "personal assurances. .". etc. etc. etc. I wonder how tolerant Boston fans would been of Ted Williams need for respect if they knew that his mother was a Mexican.

  1. We would have 0 (zero) WS trophies since 1918 without Manny Ramirez on the team. Please remember that as you slam him knowing only the press' version of things.

Posted by CrookedPolsAndCEOs February 11, 09 10:36 PM
  1. The bottom line is that Manny was being paid to do a job and QUIT on his friends AND teammates, including Papi. He has no loyalty to anyone but himself. When a man is being paid 20, 000,000 to do a job and can't even run to first base, or focus on the game itself when he wasn't at bat....No one should be above the team..NO ONE

  1. MANNY ASSAULTS A 65 YO MAN AND DOES NOT GO TO JAIL ???

HE BLAMES IT ON THE ELDERLY GUY ????...... POOR MANNY.... NO ONE RESPECTS HIM???? YOU MEAN EVERYONE IN JAIL WHO ASSAULTED SOMEONE CAN WALK OUT NOW BECAUSE THE GUY HE ASSAULTED DISRESPECTED HIM !!!! WHAT A SMALL SPOILED BOY LITTLE MANNY IS ......

MANNY DOES NOT FEEL RESPECTED SO HE QUITS ON HIS TEAM AND MAKES EVERYONE FEEL MISERABLE AROUND HIM ??? WHAT A SMALL SPOILED BOY OUR LITTLE MANNY IS....

WILL HE EVER GROW UP TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND EXECUTE HIS AGREEMENTS?????

IF NOT BASEBALL..... HE WOULD FLUNK GARBARGE COLLECTION....

  1. Can we stop talking about him. He did a good job when he was he and entertained us. The sport is about entertaining. World Series MVP remember that after 86 years??? Give him some credit.
Now please stop reporting on him. The team is obviously more comfortable without him. We are better off defensively and have a top of the league Starter to Bullpen, and an offensive that won't lead the league but will get the job done, probably 10th or so. This team has a great shot to go all the way with Beckett looking great again, Beckett, Lester, Dice K, Penny, Wake/Smoltz etc, etc, etc. Will take only a few runs if they are on their game. And they will be this year,

  1. MANNY IS THE BEST MENTOR LUGO EVER HAD !!!..... RESULTS ARE OBVIOUS... LUGO CAN NOT EVEN HIT AN OLD MAN .. FORGET ABOUT A BASEBALL...!!

i WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUKILIS TUTOR MANNY..... GOOD KICKS IN THE BUTT AS HE WADDLES DOWN THE FIRST BASE LINE !!! HOW IS FOR RESPECT MANNY???

YOU CAN WONDER HOW SCREWED UP THE UNIVERSE IS... WHEN A LITTLE SPOILED BOY... NOT EVENMANLIKE LIKE MANNY CAN MAKE MILLIONS AND SCHOOL TEACHERS GET CRAP....

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT ABOUT THIS.... MANNY SHOULD BE ON THE GARBAGE TRUCK.....

  1. Is it a coloring book?

Posted by Dan February 12, 09 07:08 AM
  1. I'm wondering if Manny did all the coloring in the book, or did he have someone "ghost-color" for him. Sounds like the book is nothing but a feeble attempt to justify some inexcusable behavior. Talk about disrespect, Manny. How about the way you dissed your teammates and fans your last year here?

    Posted by Joe K February 12, 09 07:48 AM
  1. Forget this guy. All he did every year was whine and complain, then he decides to quit playing on us, and after he leaves he disrespects the Nation...i say good riddence and i know I will never read this a--holes book. And it is a Authorized biography so he had input.

    Posted by Mike G February 12, 09 08:19 AM
  1. He didn't have to write a book. The "book" on Manny is already our and it can be summed up in two words.....HE QUIT.

Posted by Soxfan February 12, 09 08:25 AM
  1. Who cares? Enough already. Let's move on.

    Posted by H. Bear February 12, 09 08:36 AM
  1. To protect Manny, the Red Sox bent over backwards. Now Manny is making the bend over forwards.

Posted by seandaniels February 12, 09 09:43 AM
  1. "Jack disrespected Manny for many years and on many occasions," Ramirez's former agent Gene Mato tells the authors, according to a report this morning in the Boston Herald. Ramirez's wife, Julianna, offered a similar account.

He was disrespected verbally, so he retaliates physically on a 64 year old man. That's supposed to make it somehow all right? The clinical psychologist author comes across as a jock sniffing, pencil neck geek. I wonder how he would feel if it was HIS father that Manny the Moron pushed to the ground. What a loser.

  1. So my post was yanked down because it contained a little too much truth for you to handle?? No vulgarity, just truth about the pompous operations of the front office and the usual ignorant media barnstorming... I guess only Manny trashing allowed here, right?? You're pathetic.

Well here's something for you to post:

You are c-nts!! Go get a life you f-cking info-controlling Nazis. Go cry like a bunch of little b!tches because I'm right! But keep posting jacka$$ comments flaming Manny from meatheads in Revere... you're good for that!

    Live with it.

  1. "He's a complicated individual" Just another and kinder way of saying that he is nuts! Somebody is trying to restore his image.....is Mr. Boras' name in anyway associated with this "book". Probably fronted the money for it!

    Posted by geoffu2 February 12, 09 11:51 AM
  1. "It sounds like it in no way excuses Manny's behavior"

Actually, it "sounds like" nothing less than one excuse after another. It also sounds as if she was trying to excuse HERSELF on that show because, let's face it, no one's buying this garbage.

"This is not a book BY Manny."

That's because Manny can't write a book. (For all we know, he can't read one, either.)

Posted by Mister Snitch February 12, 09 12:08 PM
  1. Manny and Boras are made for each other! They are both sweating out the beginning of baseball camp with Manny and no contract. Manny must be going bonkers, he could not wait for signing in last year of contract in Boston.
Let the arrogant twins join people like Clemens in the basement. They belong there.
    Now this is fun.

  1. My boss was rude to me last week....putting me down in front of my co-workers!
SO I pushed him to the ground after a meeting. Now I am typing this from a correctional facility computer as I await trial for assault charges.
Manny- In the REAL world, we dont puch people to the ground that are rude to us....especially someone who is clearly inferior to us physically.......act like a man, Manny.
I am actually typing this from my cubicle, which, in a way, is like a correctional facility.

  1. If the goal of this book was to act as an inspiration for developing mentoring relationships, the comments posted here appear to completely contradict that effort. Most people who qualify as mentors are highly respected and often revered individuals. From the responses posted so far it doesn't appear that Manny is in the ballpark.
