FORT MYERS, Fla. -- By the time reporters were allowed back into the home clubhouse at City of Palms Park this morning, J.D. Drew had taken off for the day. But NESN's Heidi Watney caught up with Drew today on his way out regarding his trip to Boston to get an injection in his back yesterday.

Here is the transcript of that interview:

What was the genesis of this back injury?

Drew: "Well, you know early on this spring I'm talking about lower back stiffness. Been working with a chiropractor, started talking a little bit about some of the underlying issues and thinking that the facets might be a little bound up. So [I] talked with the training staff a little bit, decided to do an injection in that area to see if that would free up some of the old scar tissue, an old injury, and give me some freer motion in that area. Really a win-win situation. I mean if it doesn't go well, then it's not a big deal. If it goes well then we kind of get an idea of what's going on. So after talking with everybody, decided it would be a good chance to get back early in spring. Still got plenty of recovery time, take a few days off to see how things work out. We've got an off-day tomorrow, so see how it feels on Thursday."

Has it gone well so far?

Drew: "Yeah, you know it was really encouraging. Usually after you get an injection like that, because of the numbing medicine, if you feel relief right away then they've kind of got it in the right area. Felt really good getting up off the table, so I was very encouraged by that, and think hopefully this could be kind of a long-term benefit."

Is the plan to be able to hit on Thursday?

Drew: "Yeah, yeah, I think that's kind of the goal, give it a good 72 hours, kind of get in there and set up and kill some of the inflammation. Hopefully give me some extra motion in those joints, and see how it goes. Like I said, if it doesn't work out, no harm, no foul. But it just really gives me an opportunity to see if that was the issue."

What was the injection?

Drew: "Just basically it's called a facet block. It has a little cortisone in it. I had the L4, L5, and L5, S1 on both the right and the left down around my spine. I had an epidural last year a couple times, and neither one of them seemed to really take good effect. Maybe they helped a little bit, but not a whole lot. So after talking with some folks and the chiropractor, he thought this would really kind of help free me up a little bit."
