The Red Sox today can clinch the Mayor's Cup, the trophy given to the Sox-Twins spring training series victor. Boston is up, 2-1, on the Twins with two games to go. Here's the lineup they're going with:
1. Rocco Baldelli, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. Jason Bay, LF
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. George Kottaras, C
9. Nick Green, RF
-- Brad Penny, SP
Note that Bay is back in left after yesterday's bout with dehydration, and Penny is making his second major league start of the spring. Also note that Green is playing the outfield for the first time this spring.
Green has played three of his 275 career major league games in the outfield, all three in right. In 455 career minor league games, Green has played the outfield 37 times, 20 of which have come in the past two seasons. The breakdown: 23 in left, eight in right, one in center.
Green feels most comfortable in the infield -- he can play short, second, and third, and believes second is his best position. In the outfield, "I just try to make the routine play," Green said. "Throw it to the right bases."
Green hasn't taken fly balls aside from shagging during batting practice, which is "probably the best way to get better," Green said. Green's versatility -- he keeps a broken-in first baseman's glove in his locker to go with his infield and outfield gloves -- will only his bid to make the team, which already looked good because of Julio Lugo's injury and his .364 batting average.
"I obviously want to know what's going on, but it's one of those things where you've got to wait until they decide to tell you," Green said. "I try not to get ahead of myself. You never know. I know what I want to happen, but you never know."
