After leaving tonight's game in the middle of the first inning with soreness in his right knee, Julio Lugo received an MRI on his knee, manager Terry Francona said. The team is not aware of the results yet, but "we'll probably have something tomorrow," Francona said.

"What happened, he was complaining of right knee soreness when he went out in the first inning," Francona said. "So when we got him, we took him out for precautionary measures."

Lugo had been dealing with minor pain for a few days, but the problem did not become serious until tonight. He played the first half inning in the field, then departed for Ivan Ochoa despite not receiving any fielding chances.

"He mentioned something to [trainer Mike Reinold], but he hadn't been getting treatment or anything like that," Francona said. "He started having the guys dig a little bit. I think he has been feeling it a little bit. We'll know more as we get the results back."

Lugo is competing with Jed Lowrie for the starting shortstop position. Lugo had been off to a blistering spring, batting .450 with two doubles without making an error in the field.

Lugo missed the second half of last season with a right quadriceps injury.
