Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt just confirmed the team has struck a two-year deal with left-fielder Manny Ramirez, but subject to Ramirez passing a physical this afternoon in Los Angeles.

The sometimes nasty negotiations culminated in Ramirez receiving $45 million over two years, but it was not yet known whether the second year is an option or a straight guaranteed deal.

The Dodgers have been negotiating with Ramirez since November. At the baseball winter meetings in December in Las Vegas, McCourt offered Ramirez a 2-year, $45 million deal.

  1. At least he's not on the Yankees...and is in the National League.
And, I live in Los Angeles so I can get to see him play even if he IS a major putz.

  1. I'm glad he didn't get more, as rewarding his actions in Boston wouldn't be good.

I'm curious though, if LA gets eliminated from the playoffs, especially in year two, would he sit or play? I see hammy and knee issues in Manny's future if that is the case.

  1. It's a dreadful shame that a slacker and quitter like manny can get rewarded for his dishonorable behavior. There will lots of pain and agony in LA this year, and I don't say that only because of how manny acted in Boston, but also from the unbelievable melodrama that took place just to get him signed now.

  1. As a teacher and a fan, I think that the actions of Manny Ramirez and his agent are more than a disgrace - especially in light of the problems so many of us have with the worsening economy. I used to love Manny - as a fantastic and exciting player - at least on the field. But no matter how good a player he is, I feel very strongly that his actions are disgraceful. So many young people look up to someone like this - right or wrong. It seems that the worse he acts, the more responsibilities he dodges, the more money he makes. Does he really need or deserve all of these millions of dollars? Of course not. I know all of these guys are what most of us would consider way over-paid. But these particular millions evoke a pretty ugly picture when combined with the disappointment some of us feel with Manny. Maybe he owes us nothing. But still, he could have done so much better. His smile could have meant the love of the game. I feel pretty mad every time I see his picture and I bet I'm not the only one.

  1. I am happy as a Dodger fan to see Manny back in Blue. I may be hoping beyond hope that he plays nearly as well as he did at the end of last season, or when Boston won their two championships. If anything, I hope the young Dodgers can learn to emulate his hitting approach. I'm sure after 2 championships with the RedSox, the fans of Boston must have been very dissapointed with his attitude last year. I am pulling for a Boston vs. LA World Series in 2009!

  1. I see you call Manny a slacker and a quitter, and you deserve the right. Unfortunately your team signed another one in Brad Penny. Although for a bargain price, that straight fastball is going to get tagged in the AL East. Another one is JD Drew and his opt out of LA in 2004. He was never worth anything close to the money he earned in LA, and is earning more now. Wow. The best pick up made by Boston in the offseason is Saito, he is phenominal, and will prove it in the 8th innings. When he is on, he IS as good as Papelbon. If you think I am kidding, just wait and see!

  1. Dodgers really put themselves in a no win situation. They could have had Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreau for what they are overpaying for Manny

  1. "Manny deal subject to physical"

If they're looking for problems with Manny, a physical means they're looking in the wrong place.

  1. The Dodgers could have used Abreu, Dunn, or Manny in LF but not more than one of them. I'll take Manny in this case. Dunn is a 40hr hitter, but not in the clutch. Dunn bats .250 and strikes out about 33% of the time. Abreu has seen his better days, and his best days were never even close to Manny's worst year at the plate. Sorry Jim Johnson, but you are wrong. You have a great name though!
