FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Just a few bits and pieces from the clubhouse this morning.

After Brad Penny threw for the first time in a major league spring training game yesterday, he reported that everything was fine.

J.D. Drew hit off a tee yesterday, then took batting practice today. He expects to play tomorrow after suffering a bruise on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch on Friday. The hand, by the way, is bruised on both sides.

"It's all moving in the right direction," he said, also adding that his back is "considerably better" since getting an injection in his facet joint on March 2.

Kevin Youkilis, who played yesterday for the first time since injuring his left foot at the WBC, also said that he's doing well. He reported no problems, and said he was going to play tomorrow in Sarasota.

"It definitely felt better," he said. "It's not 100 percent yet, but it'll get there."

He said that strength is the one piece he's missing for his foot to get back to 100 percent.
