Report: A-Rod out 10 weeks
Alex Rodriguez just can't seem to stay out of the headlines. And once again, the news appears to be bad, at least for the New York Yankees.
According to a report on ESPN.com, A-Rod will have surgery to remove a cyst from his right hip and will be out 10 weeks, his brother (note: brother, not cousin) told ESPNdeportes.com today.
According to the report, Joe Rodriguez said during a phone interview with reporter Enrique Rojas that surgery was recommended and rehabilitation would take about 10 weeks.
Surgery is scheduled for Monday in Colorado, a source close to the situation told the website.
"It's a big blow for the whole family. Alex is destroyed," Joe Rodriguez told ESPNdeportes.com. "We were all very excited to see him play with the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. But the most important thing is to have a successful surgery so that Alex may continue his career."
There has been no confirmation from the Yankees regarding the scheduled surgery. MLB.com is also reporting the story.
It certainly has been rocky start to the new season for Rodriguez. On Feb. 7, it was revealed he had tested positive for steroids in 2003. During a news conference several days later, he admitted he had used performance-enhancing drugs from 2001 to 2003, saying they came from the Dominican and were provided by his cousin.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
take a pill, A-Roid, it will make you all better
Must have been the injection site, that caused the cyst!!!!!
Hmmmm..., I wonder if this cyst formed in Mr. Rodriguez's preferred "former" injection site??
Could the cyst be a side-effect from the steroids and/or injections?
Ziggy,
That is low. Lowest of low. I have a distaste for A-Rod as much as the next Sox fan, but a cyst is generally serious business. Was it funny when Lester was diagnosed with lymphoma? Grow up.
(Globe staffers, if the above comment is removed, feel free to remove this one)
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.......what a shame.
Don't you just HATE when that happens?
muscle milk and hgh aroid.
You chowder heads are such idiots, you don't put steroids in your hip.
Lets hope A-Rod gets healthy for the playoffs - where he really shines!
Wow another AL East third baseman down with a hip injury. What are the odds?
I take no joy from this. I don't wish this on the Yankees or anyone else.
He should just put some the "the clear" on it.
the body begins to break down without the usual cyclce of...vitamins. see Garciaparra, Nomar
May is optimistic. He won't be back till August.
A Roid should send his cousin in to have the surgery.
"You chowder heads are such idiots, you don't put steroids in your hip"
I agree with that, but I have heard that people inject steroids into their butts [although I'm not an expert, but you sound like one] and that's an area that's not to far from the hips, for most humans. Hard to really know if the cyst is related to the 'roids, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.
Johnathan - Difference between Lester and A-Fraud is that Lester has no record of doing 'roids and thus there appears to be no causal link between the 'roids and his lymphoma. Some people find the A-roid story funny because they associate the 'roids with possibly causing the cyst and many feel that it serves him right.
Poor guy is going to miss the part of the season when he is most productive. :)
If it was bugging him last season, he should have gotten it looked at/taken care of in the off-season, not wait until ST beings (same goes to Drew and Wilkerson). What is with players showing up at ST injured with ailments that could have and should been taken care of on their time, not their team's?
Right under the injection point. See he didn't know what he was doing when he injected himself!
I still hate to see people get hurt, even if it is Arod. Hope his rehab goes well.
Go Sox!
Hahahaha - Yank fans were complaining when he missed two weeks in spring last year. Can't wait to hear what they're saying now.
Awe, A-Rod is going to miss his best month of knocking in runs and hitting home runs when it matters the least. Mr. April.
I sincerely hope that A-Rods cyst is nothing more than a minor inconvenience and that he recovers completely and quickly. Had the players union allowed him to come to the Sox, you'd all be singing a different tune. Besides, it's a lot more satisfying and fun to beat N.Y. with him in the lineup. Nate
Maybe A-Roid can ask Madonna for some holistic spiritual treatment?
even if the cyst is not in one of his many preferred injection sites, the steroids flow throughout the body's system & can lodge & inflate any open area, such as an existing cyst or a larger empty area, such as barry bonds head...
Next thing you know it will be a tendon tear....
Thank you Baseball Gods for not sticking up with this headcase and distraction! He and the Yankees were made for one another!
The curse, has indeed, been reversed!
A-Roid is just trying to get out coming to Fenway in April! DAMN! That game was the best birthday present I had gotten in a while! P*ssy!
Could be a side effect from all that hair frosting and tanning he's doing..
Did someone really compare a hip cyst to cancer?
"a cyst is generally serious business"
Cysts are about as common as freckles, and in 99% of cases about as serious.
take it WICKED deep... just like every red sox player AND fan... you know you love it.. all dbags
So much for Mr. April.
cover up. he is really being suspended for roid use
HA HA ... you stupid Yankee fans!!!!!! AJ Burnett is next !!! HA!
Remove a cyst or his cousin from his right hip?
Did the needle tip break of when Jeter's noggin bumped it?
Is A-Roid gonna really be out 10 weeks. SI reported 6-8 weeks out. What's the truth? Anyways, why shouldn't we make fune of A-Fraud? If Papi was found using roids, they'd be calling him things like Big Needle.
conspiracy theory.....could MLB have suspended AROID (ala Jordon& the NBA) & allowed him to find a cover story?
Karma is a bitch
what a bunch of ignorants comments, this is the same injury that Lowell had. I didn't see any dancing in the streets over that...
No sane person would inject him or herself in the hip. You want a vein or artery, not a bone.
Think Manny wishes he'd waited 24 hours longer before signing with the Dodgers?
How convenient A-Rod needs surgery. Probably thinks that everyone will feel bad for him and not give him such a hard time, yeah like we will all forget that he did roids. What a tool!
I was a CG corpsman and performed 3 subaceouscystectomies at the back of the neck. The patients recovered within a few days.
This cyst, however, is much different. It is apparently located near the acetabulum, the hip socket and the cartilage that surrounds and protects the joint."Cysts can occur in bone just under the layer of cartilage that attaches to the bone. These are called subchondral bone cysts. A subchondral bone cyst in the hip socket is an acetabular cyst.
Doctors aren't exactly sure what causes acetabular cysts. One idea is that thinning of the layer of cartilage occurs with aging. Then tiny cracks form in the cartilage leading to the development of cysts. This theory suggests the cysts are brought on by mechanical stress."
If this cyst is really attached to the bone beneath the cartilage, and how could I say it is, then Arod is going to be out a lot, lot longer than 10 weeks. Six months is more like it, but that's just my conjecture. I mean, if the cyst is beneath the cartilage, then they have to somehow raise the cartilage in order to get to the cyst and then hope the cartilage reattaches itself to the bone. Best of Luck, if that is the case.
At any rate, in order to remove the cyst, the surgeon is going to have to cut thruough layers of muscle in order to get to it. I think that is the primary reason it's going to take 10 weeks or so for Arod to recover.
Cysts can also be cancerous, though I think the probability of that being the case is low. Nevertheless, they'll do an autopsy on it.
Once they operate, it will be interesting to see what wear and tear Arod has with regard to the hip socket cartilage. Considering that he's played for so long, I wouldn't be surprised that there was some significant deterioration that hasn't been revealed before or detected.
Arod may be physically older than his actual age suggests.
I wouldn't at this time suggest that his steriod use is a primary cause, however, no one really knows to what extent years of use does to the body. There have never been any real studies in this area.
It will be an interesting case study as to how quickly and to what extent Arod will be able to come back.

I don't wish injuries that are permanent on people, not even for the Evil Empire. BUT......It is good that he won't be able to play for 10 weeks. That means approx. the first 6 weeks or 20% of the season. How many games against the Sox, Rays and the other playoff contenders does he miss? It looks like the Yanks are too late to sign Manny as a DH replacement. Hopefully the Yanks don't have a real 3rd baseman to replace Alex.

YOU CAN MOST CERTAINLY INJECT YOUR SELF ANYWHERE YOU WANT W/THE STEROIDS....

"A worse prognosis for Rodriguez would be a tear in his hip's labrum. A cyst can be a symptom of a tear and that may require arthroscopic surgery."
This was lifted from the NY Post article.
New Article: "Cashman said that surgery might have left the team's star third baseman out of action for as long as four months."
Pretty close. to my prognostication.
So they aren't going for surgery afterall, just rehab. I personally don't know how you can "rehab" a cyst. It's there, and there is probably a tear in the labrum cartilage.
Arod can probably play through it, assuming it doesn't get any larger and creates a larger tear, if there already is one.
At any rate it's going to affect Arod mentally and he's already under a lot of stress.
My guess is that Arod collapses under it all and opts for surgery before the season starts or shortly after.
Why not? He'll get millions more as the poster boy for AFLEK. What a duck.

"He said the first line of treatment would be a cortisone shot to get rid of the pain -- with eventual surgery, preferably in the off-season, to correct the impingement."
Like I said, surgery will have to be performed eventually. The cyst will only get larger over time and produce greater pain.
Arod won't finish this season, imho.

Why is that so many of us love to see others in trouble ? i guess that misery certainly does love company. A cyst can be a serious medical issue. Those who wish ill on others should remember that what goes around comes around. Karma doesnt discriminate.
The Yanks lucked out with their outbidding the Sox on what's his name at 1B. The Yanks had better hope he can now hold up under the scrutiny of their being the Yank's new and only big bopper.
IMHO, there's no way Arod is going to play much this year. Oh sure, he'll play just to give it the ole "college try", but if Arod is thinking about the next 6 years or so and breaking records as I think he is, he'll take the surgery sooner rather than later and hope the roids situation dies down at the same time.
Without Arod, the Yanks have a pathetic lineup. They have a decent starting rotation assuming it holds up but it doesn't have much depth. It will crumble by August. MO ain't gonna last much longer. This might be his last year as a great closer, if that. Posada will only be a shadow of his greatest years. Damon? I could run on Damon.
This teams is looking more and more like Arod's cyst and probable torn labrum, which is an arthritic collection of has beens with neither speed, power, or OBP's enough to produce other the 3 to 4 runs a game at best.
The only good thing for the Yanks is that they won't overuse MO this year.
