Dustin Pedroia suffered a strained lower left abdominal region, though word is the strain was mild (Editor's note: Doctors at the WBC originally pronounced that he had a mild strain in his left oblique, according to a baseball source). Pedroia is expected back in Fort Myers, Fla., tonight -- he is coming from Miami, where he is with Team USA for the WBC -- where Red Sox team doctors will examine the second baseman.

"I was hitting extra yesterday and kind of felt some soreness," Pedroia told reporters in Miami today. "Started taking flips today and I kind of felt a shooting pain a little bit. Our hitting coach, Reggie Smith, said, 'Hey, that's it. Go get checked out.' Our trainer obviously called the Red Sox and I'll get checked out by the doctors there. I think it's more precautionary than anything. Obviously I'm upset. It's a couple of days and I'll be back tomorrow after I get checked out. I'll continue playing. It's up to the Red Sox. I don't really have a say in that matter."

Pedroia was asked if he had ever had an oblique problem, the same issue that Josh Beckett suffered from in the postseason last year.

"No, nothing like that," Pedroia said. "I've never really had anything like this which is why it's frustrating. Obviously I train real hard in the offseason to get ready and try to prevent something like this from happening. Maybe I tried a little too hard too fast to get this going. I'll get it checked out tomorrow."

He will clearly not play in tonight's game against Puerto Rico, and will be replaced by Mark DeRosa.

It is not yet known whether Pedroia will ultimately be able to return to play in future games in the WBC.

  1. EXACTLY why the WBC needs to go!!! THIS IS CRAZY! Now maybe we lose the MVP for a few weeks....months....or longer???? The WBC needs to go...these guys make too much money and have too many people relying on them to play in the WBC and risk their careers.

  1. Could have happened anywhere I suppose...but this is a big reason why I don't want Sox players participating in this tournament!!!!

  1. EXACTLY why they shouldn't be playing the WBC during Spring Training. Players aren't at full strength and need to be brought back into the swing of MLB ball at a slow and steady pace. I am not happy if I lose my MVP for the Regular Season

  1. This couldn't have happened in Florida? It's spring training. Get a grip.

  1. MLB.com talked to him and he said it wasn't serious and, if the Red Sox let him, he'll go back to team USA and compete. He also said he's not in any way worried about the season and thinks this will only be a couple days.

  1. Can we pleeeeeease start hearing some whining about how fragile Dusty pedroia is... pleeease.
either that or get the hell off JD Drew's back!!!!!

  1. I enjoyed going to the WBC 3 years ago, but I'd rather give up that thrill any day. Major leaguers are hyper competitive. Playing for their country pumps them up and makes them play harder than they would in spring training.

If we lose Pedroia because of this, it would be painful.

  1. "could have happened anywhere." Exactly right--could have happened in Fort Myers: no sense in blaming the WBC.

He'll bounce back in two or three days and hit a three run homer

  1. If this happened in a Spring Training game, would you be saying this is EXACTLY why we need to get rid of spring Training? Or if it happened in the first couple of weeks of the season, would you be saying this is EXACTLY why we need to get rid of teh first couple of weeks of the season. Why don't you wait to comment until we know the extent of the injury and until we find out if this was specifically caused by the WBC before we rush to condemn it...

  1. Ain't that just swell.

  1. Just saying..... Could have happened in a Spring Training game too, no?

    Posted by Dustin P March 14, 09 07:07 PM
  1. Calm down. This injury could have happened during infield drills or batting practice in Fort Meyers just as easily as it happened in Miami.

Maybe if Pedroia just took 6 months off being playing again, he wouldn't get hurt. That would be perfect.

Posted by Josh in DC March 14, 09 07:09 PM
  1. Agree with Adam - The WBC is pointless. MLB guys are either going to go half-speed or go all out and, in doing so, risk injury. Either one sucks.

Posted by IowaSoxFan March 14, 09 07:11 PM
  1. Right as rain...get rid of WBC. Injuries are more likely because there's almost no gradual ramp-up to the games. One day you're playing catch, and the next you're going full bore under playoff type pressure. Now with Lugo out too, we're really depleted on the infield. Maybe they should recall Youk too, but definitely bring back Pedroia and rest him until he heals - probably a month.

Dumb idiotic comment to make, as Schilling would say. Play in WBC or play in Grapefruit League, what's the difference. Could get hurt anywhere.

  1. Now everyone can flip out about how Bad the WBC is. Does anyone care how much these players Want to be there? It's an honor to them to play for their country, and the baseball being played is Awesome. You saying that NBA players should skip the Olympics too? It's another stage to perform and compete on for them against the best in the world. (Gives a whole new meaning to the term "World Series" now doesn't it.) The chances of them getting hurt in these games is just as much as in a Spring Training games. I'm wondering if any of you have even bothered to watch the WBC. It's like October in March and I love it. Finally I can tell Dane Cook there Is more than one October.

    Posted by NK7 March 14, 09 07:26 PM
  1. Ooookay, that's enough of that. Cute little tournament that I'm completely okay with not sending any Red Sox to participate in. Enough of Sox in the WBC.

Posted by John March 14, 09 07:26 PM
  1. Yes, Adam. Weeks and months because of a mild oblique injury. There is nothing wrong with the WBC; its no more of an injury hazard than a mid season game or a Spring Training exhibition game.

Posted by Albert March 14, 09 07:28 PM
  1. Has anyone really read this article...its a mild strain, not a torn MCL.

    Pedroia will be fine

Posted by TC March 14, 09 07:28 PM
  1. me thinks this is going to be a long long year watching injury after injury!! Anyone else think that there is no way that Ortiz,Lowell,Drew,Baldelli,Lugo,Saito
Penny,Smoltz,Beckett will make it the entire year without breaking down. Can't wait for Patriots season. p.s.way to go Varitek love your .110 average so far.One thing I know- Theo could never work for Bill Belicheck.Belicheck would have cut Varitek years ago when he couldn't play anymore. Here's hoping he strikes out so he doesn't hit into too many 4-6-3 inning ending double plays with his weak swing!

  1. No. 12, Mark, expresses glee that Lugo blew out his knee. Way to go, Mark. When you express glee at someone else's distress, you blow out your soul.

  1. I'm starting to get sick and tired of some Boston fans being so cynical all the time. Petey has a mild oblique strain... A few weeks of rest and he'll be fine, he's what...25 years old come on now people. He will heal in no time. Why are our fans always always always so "glass is half empty"???

Posted by Anthony March 14, 09 07:57 PM
  1. The WBC doesn't 'need to go'. It's still cool, despite the risks. And Pedroia will be just fine.

True baseball fans will appreciate why the tourney is meaningful beyond our precious home town favorites.

  1. I want to physically harm those responsible for the timing of this tournament. That is not an exageration.

Posted by WorldBaseballFiasco March 14, 09 08:29 PM
  1. You WBC haters are out of your mind. Did Julio Lugo not get himself injured during a spring training game where players are only playing at half intensity? Injuries can happened anywhere and just because it happened during batting practice for the WBC shouldn't be a reason to discredit the whole tournament which has not disappointed so far.

Posted by BWI March 14, 09 08:33 PM
  1. The problem is they spend too much time in the weight room. Does Pedroia really need to look like a half pint Shwarzneggar? Today you see many more injuries than in previous decades largely because players are wrapped too tightly. Players in the days of Mantle and WIlliams stayed loose by drinking. Today, maybe a little yoga and sleeping on memory foam are in order. The Red Sox should make such practices part of their preparation strategy.

Posted by manorborn March 14, 09 08:34 PM
  1. I think Pedroia will be fine. And for the people who are happy Lugo is hurt, I really hope he is ok. It seems that he really worked hard over the winter to come back, and might have had the season this year expected of him when he signed.

Because playing it in the middle of the season would be even more of a nuisance? Did you think before typing this?

    Years and years of conditioning.

  1. Hogwash!...WBC has no impact on this maybe injury...it didn't happen while he was playing...it happened while he was taking infield. Jeez...it's baseball...a game...these guys are in their physical prime. Pedey is what 25?

As for Lugo, why would any Sox fan be happy about his injury.....that makes absolutely no sense.

Are you guys really Yank fans....sure sounds an awful lot like what one would hear from them.

Posted by EastWaldo March 14, 09 09:44 PM
  1. Wah wah wah. That's all I see people doing here about the WBC. Something as necessary to the sport of baseball as the World Cup is to football.

So what if Pedroia got a minor injury during the WBC. I guess fans' memories are short. Remember Trot Nixon throwing out his back because he was sitting in his car while driving to Florida?

People in this town sure can be big babies about players getting injured.

  1. i don't get it...I mean, teachers get paid 25,000 a year to educate our children , and yet you whine about some guy who is making tens of thousands a year because he has an injury and it will hurt the home team's chance of winning a flag or pennant?
Refocus and shift your priorities, that is why we are considered a nation of children by many, this is why we are in a mess financially right now-misplaced priorities.
I know, this should e on the Arts page, then I would have no right berating you guys for this mindless display of misdirected emotion, but it is not on the arts and entertainment page, this 'news' is on the front page. Like it means crap to people who don't care about YOUR hobby. PLEASE, keep your games to yourself and let the adults have the space above the crease.

  1. Scarily enough, Lugo's injury is more of a concern than Pedroia's. Chipper Jones also had a mild oblique strain, got checked and cleared to keep playing in the WBC and he's much older than Pedroia. I think Pedroia's going to the Sox team docs to be checked has more to do with the American team being in Miami now. if they were still in Toronto, he may have stayed up there to be checked and possibly even kept playing. The Sox seem to be erring on the side of extreme caution in this case.
Lugo, however, was putting up great numbers in ST...no errors, batting in the .400's-not saying this would have kept going into the regular season but this will hurt the Sox because can't trade him or use him if his MCL is torn.

  1. Enought already. This World Baseball Championship is ridiculous. It could jeopardize the entire MLB with injuries and unnecessary play outside their teams who pay them millions. Stop it. It's over. It's meaningless. D.

  1. OMG ! Team USA just got served by Team Puerto Rico, actually they had to apply the Mercy Rule after a 10 run lead. So know that is a wake-up call to Major League owners who have spent millions of dollars on training camps in the Dominican Republic and they can't even raise to the moment. These Dominican players lye about their ages just to go the the MLB and make millions. They also love Roids to enhance performance, I think Major League needs to stop DR from playing dirty on baseball and its effect just showed up at the WBC.

  1. Hey Guys, he had one good year, you all making him to be the next great hitter and think Red sox is in trouble. I think Redsox probably in trouble with this line up not because of Dustin missing out few games due to injury but because of Manny being not there. I know Manny had to go but dont blame him 100% , people act the way Manny acted when your GM goes on Tim McCarver show and tell he wants to trade Manny but no one wants him stuff like thatt.... Remember Theo shaking his head when Manny misplayed a fly ball in Anaheim. That was disgusting, especially when u consider the big part Manny played bringing in 2 championships.

  1. I have a few things to say about The WBC.It's silly.Right know college baseball is getting aa good start and fans should be paying closer attention..Why are The Major Leagues stealing the thunder, much less the revenue from college ball...Now,Mike Timlin,I followed his career since he was a tip top pitcher that helped Toronto win TWO World Series while The Sox were always happy to win a series against The Yankees....I believe Mike Timlin was screwed twice at The Twilight, though very productive part of his career.Once when he was warmed and ready to enter a championship game in 03 against The Yankees but never threw a pitch. Then ran compltely out of gas at midseason of 06

  1. The WBC has been great for true baseball fans. I live in Japan and most fans here are very excited about it. (The first round games played here were sold out and on TV.).

The WBC is also a showcase for future MLB talent. (Dice-K made his name the last time out as the MVP of the '06 WBC.)

Complaining the WBC has to go due to an "injury" Pedroia got in practice is a laugh. (I bet Pedey did it to give WEEI a week's worth of material..)

  1. Comment #15 WIll.......

Please do NOT ever compare an athlete, who you ignorantly believe deserves a purple heart, to a solider wounded in combat!!! NOT THE SAME!! NOT EVEN Close!!!!

Dustin's injury will heal, with rest, in a short couple of weeks. The WBC was created by Buddy to promote baseball throughout the world. MLB needs several new area to gather talent. Why do we not send a group of minor leaguers to this tournamnet?!?

    Go Red Sox!!

  1. THE WBC is DIFFERENT FROM SPRING TRAINING . . geez you supportersof this tourney keep using the same dumb frick excuse . . ."he could get hurt JUST AS EASILY in a st game" . . .WRONG!!! . . .quote after quote from the players talk about how the level of intensity is DIFFERENT in the WBC than spring training!! . . .Dusty himself said he pushed TO hard TO early b/c he was playing for the US!!! . . .In spring training there is less of a chance that he overexerts himself!! . . .The wbc is fine as long as youk and dice pull out of it!!!!!!!

  1. 41, Pedroia needs to be in the weight room and in top shape so he can actually make in the majors. With his ridculous swing, this oblique crap will happen sooner or later. We smartly signed him through his best year because he will decline quickly with age as he loses range and bat speed.

Posted by DB March 15, 09 09:52 AM
  1. Hey, I love the WBC, but why not have it in December or January? Take a hint from the Pro Bowl.

Posted by Slip March 15, 09 12:53 PM
  1. 54. I said "too much time." No one is arguing that Pedroia should just entirely forego getting stronger. But strength training and agility work are not mutually exclusive or contradictory practices.

Posted by manorborn March 15, 09 02:34 PM
  1. Maybe it was more likely to happen in the WBC, but it could have happened in a spring training game. There is always some risk, and Pedroia wanted to go. I don't think I would want the WBC to go, but perhaps the timing isn't right.

With this article though, I'll be able to sleep at night. It says it's not major. Come on sox fans, the glass can be half full! It's not serious, and like already mentioned Lugo hurt his knee (not that I wish harm on anyone)! Pedroia will probably be back on the field with a week of rest.
