Don't look now, but another Red Sox star has suffered an injury at the World Baseball Classic.

Kevin Youkilis will miss the remainder of the WBC with a mild left ankle sprain and mild Achilles tendinitis in his left foot, the Red Sox said tonight in a statement. The slugging first baseman left the team and returned to Fort Myers, Fla., where he was examined.

The Red Sox also said Youkilis's MRI results were negative and that he would wear a walking boot to limit movement in the area and allow it to heal. The team does not expect him to miss significant time.

According to the statement from the Red Sox, "Youkilis originally experienced some pain in his left ankle several days ago and it worsened in last night’s game vs. Team Puerto Rico. He will no longer participate in the World Baseball Classic and will return to Red Sox camp tomorrow.”

According to a report by ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson, Team USA manager Davey Johnson said the injury happened three or four days ago, and that he noticed Youkilis was in pain during last night's 6-5 victory over Puerto Rico.

"He wasn't going to miss last night's game for the world," Johnson said.

Team USA reliever Brad Ziegler told Nelson that Youkilis could barely walk through the locker room after the game because of the pain.

Rules for replacing players leave the Americans hard-pressed to come up with a substitute for Youkilis, Johnson said.

"These things need to be addressed" in the future by WBC officials, Johnson said. "You just can't have this becoming a circus, playing guys out of position."

Adam Dunn was slated to play first base Wednesday night in Team USA's game against Venezuela to determine seedings for the semifinals. But the Washington Nationals would prefer Dunn remain in the outfield, Johnson said. Utilityman Mark DeRosa is on the roster, but the Cleveland Indians don't want him playing first, Johnson said.

The only first baseman on the list of potential roster replacements is Derrek Lee of the Chicago Cubs, who has been hampered by a sore thigh.

Youkilis, who won the Henry Aaron Award as the top hitter in the American League last season, is the second prominent Red Sox player to pull out of the WBC with an injury.

He follows second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who suffered a muscle strain in his abdomen March 13 and returned to the Red Sox.

Pedroia's injury turned out to be minor, and the reigning AL Most Valuable Player is aiming to return to the Red Sox lineup Saturday when they play the Marlins.

Youkilis is just the latest member of Team USA to suffer an injury. Pedroia, third baseman Chipper Jones, and reliever Matt Lindstrom previously were sidelined for the rest of the tournament, and outfielder Ryan Braun has remained with the team despite tightness in his rib cage.

The news of Youkilis's injury was first reported by FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this update.

  1. He probably injured it when they were all jumping on each other after the game

  1. And you wonder why the WBC makes teams and fans nervous?

  1. This is absurd. This tournament should be given a fond farewell and then ditched forever. Too many injuries, too many players being rushed into game action after a long offseason.

  1. Will someone please stop this WBC nonsense in the years to come? The fans DON'T CARE, and all it does is get players injured and exhausted before the season. It's just outrageous.

  1. So Pedroia's hurt, Youk's hurt, Lowell's a question, and Lugo's out for sure.

Yet this paper kept repeating - as if it were fact - that the Sox would "have to" trade Lowell if the Sox got Teixeira. Too many infielders. Riiiiiight.

  1. If he sprained it while celebrating like they had won the last world series game ever last night, I'm gonna be MIGHTY PISSED!!! Hey guys, it was a good win, but slow down and try to not kill someone!

  1. Just wondering...if a player has a career-ending injury...or just a season-ending injury, does that make an MLB contract null and void? Do the Sox still have to pay a guy if he missed the season due to a WBC injury?

  1. What a load of bull. I saw Youk celebrating last night after the game. He was sprinting around like a nut with Brian Roberts helmet in hand. The Sox must have an "inside deal" with Team USA. Pedroia and Youks were not going to play the entire tourney, so they both came up lame with their respective "injuries." Why even play in the WBC at all?

  1. I don't care what management says in front of the cameras, this WBC is a piece of garbage. I would much rather see a player hurt working for their own team and the fans that pay to see that player, put ahead of petty self interests, and as Pap eluded to not having the security of a long-term contract as being the basis to compete in this worthless tournament. That is BS. I could care less about the international effect on the game, I want to see my team play MLB, from April to September knowing the money spent in the offseason was put to good use. You want international competition, let the teams out of the playoff chase in Septempert let the players go to the Olympics and compete. I absolutely despise having to wake up every morning and read the injury report during spring traing.

  1. Not that I necessarily doubt Davey Johnson, but it seems just a little weird that Youk showed no problems playing the entire game, and he looked 100% perfectly fine as he was jumping all over David Wright after the great comeback (I believe that's who he was smacking while ripping off his helmet). I wonder if Johnson was just trying to cover for a freak injury that happened during the celebration. Bummer.

  1. The timing of this series is really not well thought out. You never know when injuries are going to happen, how severe they could be or how long they may interrupt one's season or career. To have this series going on during MLB Spring Training which affects their conditioning & work with their teams, & disrupts the overall mission of spring Training, is just absurd. I don't want to deny any player the opportunity to participate in these games, but I think there needs to be some serious discussion with MLB in order to try & adjust the schedule of these games, so the fans of MLB are not losing out on the participation of their respective team's players pertaining to this series , or any other for that matter

  1. You little girls whining about the WBC should shut the hell up. It was a fantastic tournament this year; the players love it, and it means the world to baseball fans from other countries. It brings revenue, interest in baseball, and excitement to baseball fans worldwide. I agree that it is a poor decision to play the WBC during spring training, but I'm sure that they can come up with a schedule that both fans, players, and team owners can agree on.

  1. Youk is a moron. His priority is the red sox and red sox nation. We the fans pay quite alot of money to see these players and games. he is a selfish jerk and I hope he learns from this stupid mistake. Once again butt head bud selig is on track to ruin baseball.

Posted by nysoxfan March 18, 09 09:20 PM
  1. I have truly loved watching the WBC tournament this year. I think it is wonderful that we have a sport other nations play and that we can compete against them. What a sense of nationalism. What a sense of globalism.

  1. Jesus Q. Jonnycake Christ

I want one Red Sox fan right here, right now, to come on this board and defend this tournament. Two things, though, before you start:

    1. STOP with "This kind of thing can just as easliy happen in spring training." Whether the injury happened during the game or celebration does not matter. If it was a ST game and Youks treaked something, you can be sure as hell he would be out of the game before the next pitch was thrown. And I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about anyone twisting an ankle in a Grapefruit League celebration. THE WBC IS DIFFERENT. PLAYERS ARE NOT MEANT TO GO THAT HARD THAT EARLY.

    2. I'll say it. I don't give a rat's ass about the "USA" on the front of the jersey. I care about the "RED SOX" on the front of the jersey beginning April 6th. It's like, at the slightest mention of anything having to do with serving your country (like goddamn exhibition baseball), you have to drop everything and do it. "OMFG are you saying you DONT WANT TO REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY??111" Please. This isn't war, folks. This isn't even the goddamn Olympics. This a late-to-the-party tournament in it's 2nd go 'round designed to m.a.k.e. m.o.n.e.y.

    Get bent, WBC. Seriously.

  1. I echo the comments about this stupid moronic excuse for baseball. What a waste of time not to mention the injuries that happen. Who cares what the world thinks of this so call great idea from Selig. Lets get back to real baseball in the USA,not the WBC.

  1. Come on. It's a phantom injury. Did you see him celebrating? Jumping up and down? Both Youk and Pedie paid their dues for the WBC and now are done. The end. Stop running around screaming that the sky is falling.

Posted by Hoss March 18, 09 10:45 PM
  1. WBC is goo! US citizens don't need it...got plenty of baseball. If the US wins, the world will assume we should have. So, what's the big deal? We've got our players to lose; nothing to gain. Try setting up those contracts so they don't include injuries that stem from the WBC, then we'll see players staying away.

  1. Hey Aroid and Andy can Youk borrow your Roids?? Seems he needs to heal himself quickly to help his mates compete.Thnx BLB

  1. John Dennis just ranted that this is BS and for once I agree with him,he states that there's no way any other Red Sox should be asked to compete ever again!!! Look the Yanks made sure only one old man from their team played, the Rays allowed only 1 reliever and a back up play but no starters!!! Cancel this crap! Before we lose a season because of injury!

Posted by Sportsbozo March 19, 09 06:22 AM
  1. I wonder if any of the crying anti-WBC babies on this thread are soccer fans, and if so, do they feel the same way about the World Cup? So much for national pride, and representing in competition with teams from other countries that love baseball. Not just THEIR team, or THEIR fave player. You know, the GAME? Bring up another point -- let's stop this jingo chauvinism called the "World Series," 'cause we all know it ain't. Let's rename it "The US/CAN Series," forbid any contractually-signed player from playing in the aptly named WBC, and thus any whining jackasses can cease their incessant braying.

Posted by Takavl March 19, 09 08:58 AM
  1. THIS is why we HATE the WBC!!!

Posted by Erik March 19, 09 09:17 AM
  1. Everyone calm down! They are not hurt. These are bogus injuries just to get them back with the team. They accidentally showed Pedroia taking batting practice on NESN during the St. Patrick's Day game and he was swinging like he usually does. Like a maniac. You think someone with an oblique injury would be taking BP? Hoss and I are the only sane ones around here.

Posted by Slappy March 19, 09 11:45 AM
  1. Takavl, you obviously know nothing of the game. Who do you think supports, funds, and offers developmental programs to all those players from countries who's primary game is soccer? The World cup, please. The US has tried for 30 years to import players like Pele and Beckam on the downside of their careers to bring a name to a sport that only a small percentage of US citizens actually care about. Yeah, you can make an argument that the world series should be renamed like the NBA championship, but it is a world game. Take a look this year and see how many foreign players are in the all-star game.

  1. Actually, Sportsbozo, I heard that Evan Longoria is going now as a replacement player.

Does no one (in baseball) remember all the injuries coming out of the first WBC? Oh yea, MLB extended Spring Training because of that...which extends the season. Why don't they just have the tournament at the end of the season. Countries who have a league and a championship series (like the US World Series) enter the teams that won championships. US enters the WS champs (which means playing for your team, not necessarily your country) and places that don't have leagues or championships can just send a team they pick (excluding any who may be on other championship teams). It sounds complicated but it really isn't. The WBC is just a glorified version of Olympic baseball but with more pro players.

Tems have to buck up and tell their players they can't play (I know what the "rules" say, that no team can prevent a player from participating unless there's injury or whatnot). Someone said it already (may have been here or another place) if these guys get injured and are out for significant time it is not MLB or the WBC that has to pay them, it's their MLB clubs that foot that bill and that's plain BS.

Posted by The Truth March 19, 09 12:52 PM
  1. Where's your national pride? Don't you want to see which nation has the strongest players? I thought that the WBC was awesome. All the players on their respective teams played their hearts out. One of the Cuban pitchers started crying when he learned he wasn't going to be able to start a game because he threw over the limit in his last outing. The WBC tv ratings went up significantly from last time and were off the charts in Asia. The WBC is here to stay, so I say accept it, buck up and prove to the world that US can play. The US should be embarrassed by their performance in the first two WBC.
