Smart man, John Smoltz. While the Red Sox are here playing extra innings against his former team, Smoltz is teeing it up with Tiger Woods.

No joke.

Smoltz made the trip to Disney to see some of his former mates on the Braves, then skipped out to hook up with Tiger, who came back from five shots down to win the nearby Arnold Palmer/Bay Hill Invitational over the weekend. Smoltz has said numerous times that he plays golf with Woods frequently and that he believes he will someday beat the world's No. 1 golfer (and best of all-time?).

Given that is appears as if Woods has his groove back, this may not be the best time.

Or maybe Woods will have a letdown?

  1. Is golf a smart activity for someone rehabbing from shoulder surgery?

  1. Best of all-time with a question mark? Is this even debatable any more?

  1. No debate, no question. Especially after Sunday's finish. Tiger would have eaten Jack for lunch if they were contemporaries. (Sorry, Jack). That's Jack, former best of all-time Nicklaus.

  1. Of course it's debatable. When you're chasing somebody elses records it means there is someone that has done more. Is he well on his way? Absoloutely. Certainly debatable.

  1. The guy isn't allowed to swing a golf club now? A golf swing is a natural motion for the shoulder, unlike pitching...but you knew that since you are a doctor and all, right?

  1. Actually, I am an avid golfer, I have been playing for over 20 years now, I am a 6 handicap. I can all of you a few things about the golf swing and what it does to the body because I have had different "ailments" from the swing.
A golf swing is NOT a natural motion for the shoulders. It requires you to reach across your body both forward AND backwards while twisting you back and hips, all while holding this position through the legs. The reason Tiger hurt his knee is because of the amount of torque he generates in his golf swing. Eventually Tiger will have to change his swing to alleviate the stress on his joints....Freddy Couples had to do it, all long hitters eventually do.
As far as damage to Smoltz's shoulders....the type of motion in a gold swing is a diffrent range of motion from that of throwing a baseball.....The golf swing wont effect that area....where the swing DOES hurt the shoulders is in the area where the shoulders and the bicep/ tricep area meet. Over time, frequently swinging the clubs daily will create some wear in that rea. This is all from experience and input of many physicians and/or physical therapists..
Note I still havent quit the game though, as it is my drug of choice.
