FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Sunny skies here at the former home of the Yankees, now the slightly dumpy home of the Orioles. It was chilly (55 degrees, not that you want to hear that) when the Sox bus arrived, but is warming up nicely.

With several Red Sox starters off to the World Baseball Classic, it'll be a challenge to bring veteran major league players to road spring training games. The Sox are 140 miles from their Fort Myers spring home. They watched a Will Farrell movie to pass the time on the bus.

Terry Francona said Brad Penny threw a side session in the cold yesterday and may be pushed back from Thursday's scheduled start against Puerto Rico.

Lars Anderson is here as DH and he said he spoke with his former minor league manager, Gabe Kapler, when the Sox played the Rays in Port Charlotte last week.

Rocco Baldelli is not on the trip, but expects to get more DH action with David Ortiz playing in the WBC. Francona keeps telling us that seven weeks of spring training is too long. ''Guys are going to be ready to play the regular season way before the regular season,'' said the manager.

I spoke with Oriole GM Andy MacPhail, coaches Rick Dempsey, Dave Jauss and Terry Crowley, and All-Star Brian Roberts and all are bracing for what figures to be a tough go in the American League East for Baltimore.
