Updates: Red Sox at Marlins

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff March 21, 2009 01:49 PM

RAIN RAIN, GAME GOES AWAY (6:24, END GAME, 4-3 Sox)
The game was stopped in the eighth inning, resulting in a 4-3 Sox win. That's it for Jupiter, folks.

BLAME BOWDEN (5:37, BOTTOM 7, 3-2 Sox)
The Sox scored while the media was downstairs talking to Michael Bowden, so I can't tell you how the runs scored. But I can tell you that the rain delay is Bowden's fault. "They called me the Rain Man my first two years at pro ball because it seemed like every day that I was pitching we were getting rained on," Bowden said. "I'm kind of used to it." Bowden went three innings this afternoon, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He struck out two. He wasn't all that pleased with his performance, saying too many of his pitches were too high in the zone.

TIED UP (4:55, TOP 5, 1-1)
The Sox tied up the game when Hanley Ramirez made an error on a throw to first on pinch hitter Mike Jones. The bases were loaded, bringing home Nick Green with the tying run.

HIT MACHINE (4:50, TOP 5, 1-0 Marlins)
Leave it to Nick Green to break up Anibal Sanchez's perfect game. He singled through the left side of the infield for the first hit of the game. The Marlins had scored a run in the bottom of the third when Cameron Maybin came home on a sacrifice fly by Hanley Ramirez after walking to lead off the inning.

NOT MUCH DOING (4:22, BOTTOM 3, 0-0)
So far in this one the Sox have no hits and the Marlins have two. There hasn't been much action on the basepaths for either team, clearly. Michael Bowden is pitching OK so far, after struggling in a couple of his outings this spring.

SOX GO QUICKLY (3:50, BOTTOM 1, 0-0)
Didn't take long for the Sox to go 1-2-3 in the first inning against former Sox farmhand Anibal Sanchez. (He was traded in the Mike Lowell/Josh Beckett deal.)

GAME TIME (3:44, TOP 1, 0-0)
The rain delay was 2 hours, 39 minutes. Yes, this is a spring training game.

GAME ON IN 20 (3:19, PREGAME, 0-0)
Sorry I haven't satiated your desire for more Sox news, but we just found out what was happening here. In a truly absurd development, given that this is spring training, the Sox and Marlins are actually going to try to play. Game time is now scheduled for 3:40 p.m. The outfield is soggy, and I can't imagine that any actual starters are going to last much of this game (if any). We thought the game would be cancelled for sure, until we saw the teams' managers roaming the outfield trying to determine if it could be played. Shockingly, the answer was yes, given the sopping field. (Yes, I know that the game is sold out and that played a major factor. Of course.)

BACK ON (1:49, PREGAME, 0-0)
Well, we got close to a game. After having the game delayed by rain here in Jupiter, Fla., it ceased just long enough for the tarp to come off and the field to be prepared. But just now, the grounds crew put the tarp back on the field as it began raining yet again. Not sure how long they'll wait to get this in, given the packed house at Roger Dean Stadium.

  1. Well Amalie, what's the story. It's been almost an hour and a half since you last posted. Are they going to play or not?

  1. You are the Florida Marlins: 8000 plus people $25 per ticket plus concessions
with mostly minor league players. No surprise here watch it get postponed or called after 5 innings

  1. Home field edge to the Marlins, who surely must like water. And no one likes wet sox.

  1. A game vs. the Red Sox that's been sold out for weeks? And you're surprised that they're playing? How long you been doing this job, Amalie?

  1. March 21, why even bother. Red Sox line-ups on the road are ridiculous. Very few vets will travel WAY over to the east coast of Florida for a game, especially pitchers. The games are a joke. Even in Fort Myers(home of the $5 bottle of water and the $46 good seat)lineups are ridiculous. You would think in these economic times the Sox would try to give the fans a break. Seeing that Theo says market conditions are not good thus negotations with Bay halted. Well John Henry the conditions are the same for us fans. As a RS fan here in SWFL I was unable to attend this year. I'm sure will not be able to attend next year. HELP!

  1. Over $40 for good seats at a spring training game...and sold out ? $5 for a bottle of water and people are paying it? Where is this recession located? Supply and demand is a beautifull thing...if your on the supply side

  1. It's nice to see the rules of baseball waived and the Red Sox declared a winner in a suspended game. Check the book. If a game is called before the teams have had an equal number of innings at bat, the score reverts to the last completed inning. That makes it a 3-3 game, since Boston scored in the top of the final, uncompleted, inning. Thus, by the rules, the game is a suspended game, and no winner can be declared. The game should be resumed at the next opportunity from the point where it was stopped. Of course, this is spring training, so I guess that mutual agreement can override the rules. Still, it shouldn't really be counted as a win.
