What's next for Buchholz
After his start today, the roughest of his sterling spring, Clay Buchholz met with Red Sox manager Terry Francona about his immediate future. As expected, Buchholz will begin the year at Triple A Pawtucket unless Brad Penny is unable to make his start April 12 in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels, in which case Buchholz will make the start.
"If I get sent down, then I’m just going to take it as it was out of my power and they had their mind made up," Buchholz said before meeting with Francona. "Because I don’t think I could have pitched any better than I did pitch, coming into spring training with all the expectations from last year and coming in. I feel like I did a pretty good job with it coming to this year. I’ll still being playing ball. I’ll be up in the major leagues sooner or later."
Said Francona: "I'll tell you what -- I think all spring he set out to make decisions hard for us, and I mean that in a good way. He's done a teriffic job. He's picked up his tempo. He's attacking with his fastball. His changeup is starting to have that old life to it. And he's thrown some good breaking balls. We're really pleased with him."
Buchholz, no matter what, will start Sunday in a minor league game here in Fort Myers, Fla.
EDIT: Also, the Red Sox made an official announcement on Jeff Bailey, reassigning him to the minor league complex.

Let's keep him. I don't want to trade Bucky.
Too much good pitching - what a nice problem for the Sox to have going into the season. I have to applaud Clay on his attitude - assuming what he's telling the media is how he really feels about the situation, I'm glad to read about a pro athlete who realizes that baseball is a TEAM sport, check your ego at the door.
And now, I think I'm going to see if I can get some P'tucket tickets. :)
The sox should let Buch start the season in Pawtucket, but keep Penney on a short leash.
It'll be good for him. He'll be back sooner than later.
They're wasting this guy's career in the minors. He threw a no hitter in the big leagues for cryin' out loud. Either call him up or trade him for a catcher.
I look at Buchholz and see a young catcher. He won't be dominant and he may not even be serviceable over long stretches. Total head case. Hasn't put on the weight. Still a bad seed.
If Clay's hot in AAA, the Sox trade him for real offensive power... someone like Manny only more uninteresting. Much more.
None of those catchers are even close to Buchholz in value. It's a total joke that those rumors began in the first place. They didn't come out of Boston's front office, that's for sure. Be patient.
Wasting his career in the minors? He's pitched more innings at the MLB level than he has a Triple A. He'll be back, and soon.
The kid is a stud. And if anyone thinks a year of struggling in MLB means a pitcher will never make it, he never heard of John Smoltz or Roy Halladay.
So side Snerrick!!
Bucholz,Bard,Bowden,Masterson,Lester,Delcarmen,Papelbon,Tazawa, and apparently the best arm of them all is Hagadone... Why trade away strength? Some of these guys are going to have iffy years, you need as many as you can. Then crank out Henry's wallet for the necessary hitting to score enough runs for these guys to win. A heck of a lot better than the old Marty Pattin, Ray Cul Sonny Siebert, Zane Smith days of long past....
Thats to bad. I had hoped he would do good.
he is going to be good.becketts the one who is overated
Buchholz problem is with the nightlife. If he stays away from that, he can be great. If not, it's going to be a problem.
No need to worry Amy, there'll be plenty of good seats still available to see the Paw Sox play
I'm hoping Buchollz does well in AAA and returns to Fenway without the
pressure he was under. Then the idiots who think they know
everything about ballplayers can eat their stupid words .Players are not
robots, they're not machines, they suffer as normal people do and he had
a tough time after throwing the no hitter, putting incredible pressure on
himself .Dumb people say dumb things because they are who they are,
dopes !
Wakefield in long relief role, Bucky in the starting rotation....done and done. Look what happened when Francona gave Timlin his home town, I love you, play as long as you want, treatment. What's best for the team is to let Clay work through it in the majors...like we did with Pedroia
My 2 cents
Clay has more innings in the majors than in AAA, or so I've heard. I see nothing but solid reason with Penny over Bucholtz to start the season.
Anyone see Penny being OK with triple A?
If Penny does well he could be a good trade piece if nothing else come the deadline. I'd rather see Penny be traded than the Young Buch all things being equal.
I heard they could have traded Buckholz back in December for that catcher from Texas who is batting 350 this spring...All I hear about is how deep their pitching is....If that is so,then they should have traded this guy who is technically a minor leaguer for the catcher...I remain...with Varitek as an ABSOLUTE automatic out ....equivalant to an N.L. pitcher...the Red Sox will go absolutely no where this year !!!!...For all the optimism...there season will be over before the end of April...All because of that one weak link.....Oh....don't get me started on 'good ole Wake'." he gives us innings" yeah he does...he also automatically 'comps ' the opponent 4 or 5 runs by the 6th....0-3 to start and never to see first place...Hope I'm wrong

I think the world of Clay Bucholz. He will be a very good pitcher for the Sox. The best thing for him is to pitch regulary at Pawtucket and make his way back. I would not trade him for Salty. His potential is too great.
Instead, listen Theo, trade a few 2nd tier prospects to San Francisco for Buster Posey. THis kid will be much better than Salty and SF has numerous holes to fill and this type of trade makes a lot of sense.
I was in the granstands for his no hitter and I hope to see him up sooner or later, the kid has some talent. I don't think he will be one of those guys you never hear from again. Besides, I want him to autograph my ticket stub.
We need to keep Buch, he'll come together, he's too young to give up on. We have plenty of pitching potential that other teams would be interested in if a trade was needed. I think Chris Carter is a solid bat, especially for Willy Mo (or even further back, Bronson). Power doesn't win championships, consistent hitting, defense and pitching do.
I cannot understand this selection of them.
If they discharge the eldest pitcher they get to have free hand to get new prospect catcher.
Buckholz is worth a lot. He's still young with not a lot of milage on his arm. He has great stuff but you know it's pretty darn tough to be great all the time. Ask Beckett. Ask Peavey. Ask virtually any pitcher. Let's have patience. If you look closely at the Redsox farm system a strong case could be made that they will not need to sign any free agents for the next 4-5 years potentially. They have enough pitching stockpiled. They have a strong first base prospect coming up and if they can wait long enough for some of their young outfielders to blossom they will be fine there as well. The only problem is catching and they will probably be able to trade for that

There are Red Sox Fans, and there is Red Sox Nation. Luv the fans but, wadda stupid nation.

He also had arguably the worst year of any first or second year pitcher to pitch significant innings in the past century.
Certainly pitching a no-hitter in your rookie year is impressive, but it doesn't exactly make a sure thing -- 21 pitchers have done it and only one of them could really be called an elite pitcher and only two are even "household names."
Buchholz has great stuff, there's no denying it, and the potentially for great success but he's not a sure thing and the one thing that he's demonstrated most clearly is that he's a work in progress.
A 2-9 record with a 6.75 ERA and a WHIP over 1.75 speak a lot louder than a no-hitter or gaudy spring training numbers. He'll be back this year, but to say it's a waste of his talent to be patient is ignoring the facts.

Hate the childish spelling, love the sentiment.
I don't think that the no-hitter defines him at this point. He has a lot to prove....and probably will. However....PROVE is the operative word!
Beckett's overrated, Al??? Guess what - we don't win the 2007 World Series title without him. We were down 3 games to 1 to Cleveland with Cleveland holding all the momentum. What does Beckett do? He goes into Cleveland and competely shuts them down and shuts their fans up. He was the only pitcher on our staff that year who could have won that game. And he was 2nd to C.C. in Cy Young voting that year.
Last year he was hurt all season long.
