Bailey in house, Baldelli to DL

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 21, 2009 03:53 PM

Outfielder Rocco Baldelli has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, and first baseman/outfielder Jeff Bailey has been recalled from Pawtucket to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

Baldelli left the Red Sox' victory over the Orioles yesterday before the top of the fourth inning with a mild left hamstring strain. The inning before, Baldelli had made it to third base on an error by right fielder Nick Markakis, who overran a fly ball and had it bounce off his glove. Coming around second, Baldelli aggravated an injury that kept him out of the lineup last Wednesday.

Bailey, 30, who lost a battle with Chris Carter for one of the final roster spots this spring, was batting .255 with four homers in 47 at-bats at Pawtucket this season.

  1. Can't we get anyone better than "Beetle Bob" Bailey to take the roster spot? And when did Chris Carter retire from ESPN to play for the Sox?

  1. Amalie,
What was the corresponding move to get Bailey onto the 40-man? Lowrie to the 60-day? or something else?

  1. That was quick. "Rocco Baldelli" must be Italian for "Certain Injury."

  1. Theo is going to end up regretting all these bargain basement moves as the season goes on. Baldelli, Wilkerson, Carter, Penny, Saito......all good players at one time. But they are all potential liabilities now. (I know Wilkerson is gone but he fits the bargain basement profile to the letter. You get what you pay for.) It is not as if the Sox don't have cash and/or prospects. They need solid, healthy players for spot starts and back-ups. This M.A.S.H. BS is just that.....a bunch of crap.

  1. I was wondering what Chris Carter was doing since he left the X-Files...

  1. Couldn't disagree more with ya, warehammer. Solid healthy players in back-up positions translates to players who aren't talented enough to play everyday. Rocco is a .275 hitter with everything needed to be an everyday player except health. I'd much rather have that for "spot" starts than a mendoza player who's healthy enough to play everyday. Is it risky? Yes. But no risk, no reward.
RB has the talent to have a 4 hit, 2 homer night and combined with Kotsay will give us tremendous flexibility as the season moves on. Let the weather warm up. Rocco will be fine.

  1. Seriously, was much due diligence done in the Baldelli signing? Did Theo and company not know he's almost certainly made of tissue paper?

  1. Is that Catalanotto guy still available? We need a good, cheap, experienced bat.

  1. Give Bailey a chance. He tore up sping training. Baldelli will also be fine. Saito has been exceptional. I have no problem with the bargain basement approach. Some will work, some won't. We can't compete with the Yanks, we have to be smarter. And we are looking much smarter right now. You want to spend the big bucks on Sabathia and Wang? Not me. I'd rather have the flexibility that we have.

  1. Ya think the Rays would have let Baldelli go if he was worth keeping? Of course not! This guy is going to contribute nothing but a sore lung to this team. It's more entertaining to watch the Yankees 1st baseman pitch a scoreless inning than watch these Red Sox in even their best efforts.

  1. Good thing the team just won 5 games in a row, or you would be back attacking Papi, Mike, JD, Ells, Wake, etc. True lovers of the game. Baldelli IS a well above average outfielder, a solid righty bat to rest lefties JD and Ells, an amazing athlete for a bench player. Wilkerson didn't make the team and retired. You're kidding about Carter. Look up his MiLB#'s, 2008 Fenway #'s, and 2009 ST#'s: pure hitter with tons of power, potentially one of the best on the team, still young, huge high-side, and he is backup to a backup. You want Adam Dunn for the bench? Jeff Bailey? He would be starting on half the teams in the league. I.L. MVP in 2008. Good glove. Excellent 2008 MiLB and MLB and 2009ST#'s. Incredible power, high OBP, clubhouse leader. Saito? You would complain about Saito? One of the premier relievers in all of baseball? Penny. Let's talk about him in a couple of weeks. He will either be huge or replaced by Buchholz, Masterson or Bowden .. . or hofer Smoltz. There is a BIG difference between potential liabilities and liabilities. Mauer, CC, AJ, Saltalamarchia are all potential liabilities, but until they become actual liabilities, they are considered assets, like Saito, Penny, Carter, etc.

The media and the projections of all researchers rank the Sox Rotation and Pen as the best or among the best in baseball, and the lineup the deepest . . . and you call it crap? You take your name too seriously, Mr. Hammer. This is one of the best Red Sox teams ever; certainly the deepest. Try supporting and enjoying them.

  1. The comments about Bailey's okay performance defensively don't match up with the facts. I'm sick and tired of hearing from people who don't have their facts straight. He was IL MVP and has performed for Francona when he needed him. How often have you traveled between two jobs in the last ten years and performed on a superior level? Get over yourself and give the guy his due.
