Bailey recalled, Hansack let go (for now)

The Red Sox have officially recalled first baseman/outfielder Jeff Bailey from Triple A Pawtucket and added him to the active roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, PawSox righthander Devern Hansack has been placed on unconditional release waivers, though his time with the Sox may not be done.

Bailey, 30, hit .255 with four home runs and seven RBIs in 12 games for the PawSox this season. In 2008, he was named International League’s Most Valuable Player after batting .301 with 25 homers and 75 RBIs. He nearly made the club out of spring training, but lost a battle for a final roster spot to Chris Carter.

Bailey owns a .254 batting average with three homers and seven RBIs in 30 career games with the Sox. He will wear No. 55 and be active for today’s doubleheader against Minnesota.

Hansack, 30. has been with the Red Sox organization since 2005, making nine appearances for Boston from 2006-08. He owns a 2-2 record and 3.70 ERA in 24.1 major league innings.

His career highlight came on Oct. 1, 2006, the final game of the Red Sox season, when he pitched five no-hit innings against the Orioles before the rest of the game was rained out.

It does not count in the record books as a no-hitter -- a pitcher must throw nine full innings and a complete game, per the definition in the rule book -- but Hansack did get credit for a shutout.

Hansack suffered a dislocated shoulder while throwing a pitch in the sixth inning of an April 13 game vs. Rochester. According to WEEI.com's Alex Speier, he has been offered a minor-league deal with the Sox so he can rehabilitate his injury following surgery at the team's complex in Fort Myers, Fla. He is expected to accept the deal once he clears waivers Friday.
