Carter optioned to Pawtucket

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff April 23, 2009 09:58 PM

The Red Sox optioned Chris Carter to Triple A Pawtucket and will make a corresponding roster move tomorrow, the team announced this afternoon. Carter went hitless in five at-bats after winning a competition in spring training for the final roster spot.

The Red Sox will call up outfielder Jonathan Van Every to take Carter's place, according to a baseball source. Van Every, who hit a grand slam in Pawtucket on Wednesday, gives the Red Sox a better defensive option, which they need with Rocco Baldelli on the disabled list. Van Every has a reputation as an excellent defensive outfielder.

The Sox also made official its trade for Kason Gabbard, reported earlier this afternoon by The Globe's Nick Cafardo. The team acquired Gabbard from the Texas Rangers for cash.

  1. Is it possible they want to bring Dave Roberts back for one inning against the yanks?

  1. Too bad for Carter. He has a great bat, but still hasn't been given a shot. I don't think 5 ABs is a great sample size. The kid deserves a shot somewhere.

  1. Carter must have seen the writing on the wall, with Bailey having been just called up. I don't know if Bailey is the answer at DH, but I guess the idea is to find out. He's got some pop in that bat, though.

  1. If you're not over it by now, PRETEND you're over it. Treat him like any other player. Why even give him the satisfaction of believing he was so important to you?

    INDIFFERENCE. That's the ticket.

  1. They didn't even give him (Carter) a chance to show what he really can do!

  1. I think that would be great if you could actually get anyone to do it. Truth is, it's fun to boo the Yanks. Fun to boo their stars. And most fun to do it at Fenway. Arod's not playing this series, Jeter or Rivera I can't really boo anymore, most of the other known riod users are gone (Sheff and Giambi). So who's left to boo? Damon, Joba, and Texiera, that's who. And Posada too just becaue of the nose.
