Feeling green?

Jeff Bailey shows off the Sox' Earth Day uniforms while slugging a second-inning home run. (Globe and Wire Photos)
The Red Sox broke out their green tops to celebrate Earth Day during a 7-3 triumph over the Minnesota Twins in Game 2 of a doubleheader sweep Wednesday at Fenway Park. You can see the recycling logo on Jeff Bailey's right sleeve in the inset above.

Be sure to vote in our poll below and leave your thoughts on the Sox' uniforms -- which also feature a shamrock on the left sleeve and were used for a spring training game on St. Patrick's Day -- in the comments section below.

The Sox originally debuted these uniforms for a St. Patrick's Day game on March 17 in Fort Myers. (AP)

Anything... ANYTHING... is better than those embarassing red jerseys we are now stuck seeing every Friday night along with those phony Sox hats.
This Red Sox ownership jumped the shark a long time ago with the freakish fashion show.
The only uniforms the Boston Red Sox should be wearing on the field are the classic, traditional Boston Red Sox home whites with the true Red Sox famous "B" cap for Boston.
I think it was a nice gesture. It's always good to raise awareness, especially considering how many people seemingly still don't care about the earth. I hope they make it an annual event!
Who cares what they wear? They can wear pink for all I care as long as they win.
I don't mind these Earth Day jersey's - I really don't like the hanging Sox hats though. It's ok for a fan walking around the city streets but NOT on the field. It's just WRONG!!
Imagine how much energy and material was wasted by the Red Sox to show their support for Earth Day. If they really wanted to make a statement about Earth Day, they could have done it in many better ways.
I don't mind the Earth day uniforms but it would be hypocritical if they are made of the same crap the other ones are made of and/or made in China... Not too earth friendly.
More "new" uniforms? Why couldn't they have saved the money? They should auction those ugly things off to charity!
I disagree. I think baseball jerseys need to be modernized. Hockey jerseys are great because of the colors and logos. Same with football and basketball. But some baseball jerseys are really boring. The Yankees and Red Sox come to mind. There are some boring baseball jerseys. The new road jerseys look horrible (May want to change their name to the Boston Navy Blue Sox for road games). I personally really like the alternate home jerseys and alternate road jerseys aren't too bad (the new logo isn't bad either). I guess it's all taste and personal opinion, but I would like to see more creativity in baseball uniforms. And for the record, I think the green jerseys look horrible.
I get the idea of recognizing Earth Day. That's the Sox' call as an organization. But what was the deal with the shamrock on the left sleeve? Is it St. Patrick's Day redux?
I was watching the game with the sound down last night, so if someone explained that this was their example of recycling jerseys, I apologize. But it seemed very odd to be wearing shamrocks in April.
I wasn't sure if it was for Earth Day or support of the Celtics!
I prefer the all Green ones...
Well, the shamrocks do also work as a shout out to the Celtics . . .
Oh yeah, the Sox are so committed to the environment. All Saturday games that are not on National TV are now 7pm starts instead of 1pm. Seems saving electricity for the lights is trumped by NESN ratings.
Some of you people need to unclench. The green was fine, they looked great!
The Red Sox have such classic home uniforms and HAD classic road uniforms, why do they need to screw around with earth day unis and those batting practice/blue-red jerseys. You don't see the Yankees pulling this crap. They have their classic unis, that everyone likes and they stick with them.
All the different uniforms make us look small market, expansion-type team (see Pittsburgh or KC or Florida). We are better than that. One home uni (the classic whites), one road uni (the classic gray with red letters) would be just fine.
The jerseys are ugly, but they can't compare to the hideous and nearly unforgivable new hats. Those don't even belong on a beer league softball team. The players should be embarassed to be seen in such rediculous lids. I hope that the management recognizes the error and bans the manufacture of the abominations.
Want to make an ACTUAL commitment to the environment? How about a day game now and again -- especially in October!
Maybe if they wore green shirts and socks they wouldn't have looked so ridiculous. The combination of the red and the green just looked wretched...Thank goodness the Bruins were on, what I saw during commercial breaks and between periods was enough. Just wear the green hats.
Had they worn green shirts under the uni and green socks it would have looked fine, but could not deal with the white, green, and red. Bring back the B on the caps - not liking the socks symbol there.
Other idea is to try red pin stripes in honor of Mrs Marky T who may be in the house this weekend.
GO SOX!
I'm fine with the jerseys. At least Red Sox was spelled correctly. Well... as correctly as can be expected. You know what I'm saying...
These uniforms look bad. I'm with Janice (post 1)--the team should wear white at home and grey on the road. Stick with one hat.
The Triumvirate has done some great things since they arrived, but the Taco Bell thing (2007 WS), the Coca-Cola thing (2008), and these lame new uniforms and "hanging sox" hats are pathetic. Whether real or imagined, these marketing ploys reek of greed.
All this whining here, but man, Scott, you top them all:
"HAD classic road uniforms"
Yup, classic road unis, dating all the way back to 1990. That's some history right there.
"You don't see the Yankees pulling this crap. They have their classic unis, that everyone likes and they stick with them. "
News flash: we're not the Yankees. What some people call "mystique" and "history," others call stagnation and an unwillingness to evolve.
"All the different uniforms make us look small market, expansion-type team (see Pittsburgh or KC or Florida)"
This is where you really give me some laughs. Did you seriously just call the Pirates and expansion-type team? They've been around almost a decade and a laugh longer than the Sox. Maybe you'd be more comfortable with pink hats, as you sound like the worst of bandwagon fans.
I have a weekend ticket plan and live about 4 hours away.....cant see a Saturday game anymore and forget getting home around 10pm on a Sunday night. Sox mgt is messing with tradition, banning a ton of day games, so the are just being consistently anti-traditional with those god-awful uniforms yesterday!! I bet Yankees fans are laughing at Red Sox Nation about now !!
can they wear black and gold uniforms for a night after the B's win the cup?
In honor of Earth Day, I recycled my dinner after seeing those knarly uniforms last night. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Traditional home and away uniforms, please.
PB - Fox Sports has a Saturday afternoon exclusive. So, no one can have an afternoon game unless it is on Fox. Blame Fox and MLB, not the Sox.
The green uniforms were horrible! Between the green hats and the red shirts underneath the jerseys, they looked like oversized Christmas ornaments.
In terms of their uniforms, you knew the Sox would develop a small-market look sooner or later.
After all, the new owners are small-market in every sense of the term.
The green jerseys looked just fine although I do agree that they shouldn't wear the red stuff with green
The real RED SOX uniform sin is having that furniture store guy waltzing around in full SOX drag! It's a desecration I say! Players, managers, coaches period. If a fan wants to wear a favorite jersey fine but to strut around in the full get-up right down to the cleats to sell a crappy furniture promo (they gotta sweep?) that's beyond the pale.
Did someone just call Pittsburgh an expansion team? Might want to check the 1903 World Series again.
"Oh yeah, the Sox are so committed to the environment. All Saturday games that are not on National TV are now 7pm starts instead of 1pm. Seems saving electricity for the lights is trumped by NESN ratings."
PB - I think the conversion of Sat. games into mostly nights has more to do with Fox's monopoly and greed. There is a huge number of out of NESN market fans who would not be able to watch the games if they stayed on Sat. afternoon. As one of them, I am thrilled that they moved mostly to nights. I hate any Sat. Fox game as I can't watch it (livid about not being able to see Sat's showdown of Beckett v Burnette). If Fox dropped this monopoly, then there would likely be more Sat. afternoon games. The conversion to Sat night is mostly across the board of both leagues, so don't see faulting NESN as much as Fox.
As to the uniforms - they could have done better by donating the money used to purchase all of these to an environmental organization. They are truely horrid.
Ohhh it was fur Urf Day! I thought they were confused about when St. Patty's Day was. At first, I thought it was the way the regular uni looks on standard definition since I had to watch it on a non-high-def-hard-to-find-like-a-pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-a-rainbow channel. Then I realized the lettering was supposed to be green.
The new road jerseys aren't new, they're throwback. Go watch highlights from the 80's you'll see them. I like them, I'm also digging the Blue Jays throwback unis as well as the Royals bringing back the powder blue pants.
