Matsuzaka goes to DL, Jones recalled

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 15, 2009 02:17 PM

The Red Sox have placed Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right shoulder strain and recalled lefthanded reliever Hunter Jones from Pawtucket.

The news hardly comes as a surprise after Matsuzaka's alarmingly ineffective performance Tuesday night during the Red Sox' 6-5 12-inning loss to the host Oakland A's. Matsuzaka recorded just three outs and threw just 22 of his 43 pitches for strikes in his second start of the season. After the Sox staked him to a 3-0 lead in the top of this inning, he allowed five hits, two walks and five runs in the bottom half, facing 10 batters.

After the game, the club said that Matsuzaka, who was the Most Valuable Player of the World Baseball Classic this spring while pitching Japan to its second title, was suffering from "arm fatigue." He will be examined by Dr. Thomas Gill, the club's team doctor, on Friday.

Matsuzaka seemingly disagreed with Francona that anything was physically wrong with. After the two spoke this morning in Francona's office, Francona said they have reached a consensus.

"Contrary to what Dasiuke said last night, I think he understands it," Francona said. "I think sometimes guys say some things when they’re trying to compete. We just want him to be able to be Daisuke, not be part of Daisuke. We’ll put him on the DL. We’ll have him looked at Friday, and the we’ll put our heads together and see what the best way to get him where he can make all his starts and be good."

After speaking with trainer Mike Reinold, "I don’t think there’s an injury," Francona said. "It just looks like there’s some fatigue. Kind of like last year, where he’s got to build it back up and feel good about himself. I don’t think he said today he felt real good about himself."

In two starts this season, Matsuzaka is 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA. In 6.1 innings, he has allowed 14 hits, five walks, three home runs, and nine earned runs while striking out five. Red Sox manager Terry Francona indicated earlier today during a radio interview that the team believes Matsuzaka's issues stem from trying to do too much too soon in preparation for the World Baseball Classic.

The Red Sox tried to monitor Matsuzka from Fort Myers and with team personnel with Matsuzaka in Japan, but they could only do so much to ensure Matsuzaka was not overexerting himself too early in the season.

"I don’t know that we know for sure," Francona said. "We’re 6,000 miles away, and we tried to get a feel for what he’s doing without overstepping our bounds. I don’t know if we always made other people over there feel like we weren’t overstepping. That’s a tough one for me."

Once Matsuzaka returned to the Red Sox with roughly two weeks left before the season began, the Red Sox did not notice any serious strain in spring outings.

"That’s hard to tell," Francona said. "He’s coming off of a game where he’s pitching his heart out with a lot of emotion. And then you come back to a spring training game. So I think it’s somewhat maybe expected. But we like to keep our eyes on guys all spring and watch them build up, because we can watch the progression. It’s frustrating. We knew going in. We talked about it. It’s there. You do the best you can. We’ve had a tough week to boot, and now we lose a pitcher. We’re not thrilled about it. What are you going to do?"

Jones, a 6-foot-4-inch, 240-pound southpaw, is en route to Oakland, and the Sox are hoping the 25-year-old arrives before or during the game since their bullpen was depleted last night. Justin Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima, and Jonathan Papelbon combined to pitch 10 scoreless relief innings Tuesday night before Javier Lopez suffered the loss in the 12th inning.

It is uncertain for now who will take Matsuzaka's next turn in the rotation, though Masterson, who struck out six in four innings last night, would seem to to be the best bet. It also may be dependent on the status of Josh Beckett, who is appealing his six-game suspension -- one start -- for nearly hitting the Angels' Bobby Abreu with a pitch Sunday.

  1. I would like to thank the WBC and Bud Selig for this excellent news. I hope the money that was made for non-US entities was worth it. Yet another case of greed winning out. Does anyone really like the WBC? Yes it was "real" baseball, but it was not all that exciting. Japan should have to kick in to pay his salary for these 15 days.

  1. Who is Hunter Jones?

  1. Smart move. It's too early to push anything. Hunter Jones will be demoted when Dice-K's next start comes around and Bucholz will be called up.

  1. Dice K has never lived up to the salary he's paid and the potential he was supposed to exhibit. Trade him.

  1. Thank God!!!! Watching Dice K when hes on can be maddening enough but when he struggles I just cant watch.

  1. Sorry folks, but it's going to be a long season. With the sox hitting (lack of) the way they are and the WBC effects still lingering, the sox are in danger of falling too far behind to catch the leaders. I hope I am wrong but after 2-6, worse since god knows when, we will have to keep our fingers crossed. Get that mind working OT Theo, we're going to need some additions this year. No I am not panicking! I have gone through too many tough times with this team and fully understand how difficult this year will be in the AL east.

  1. Everyone will turn and blame the WBC, and perhaps it is to blame. Maybe MLB should look into changing the time frame of the WBC. The idea in itself is a good one, but rushing players along to participate is not

  1. In each game I have watched this year I have found the magic of the past missing. That being the Red Sox playing as a team. This year it seems every one is trying to be a star, and no one is showing up. Last night showed a little of the old team work when 3 runs were scored without the home run. I have seen errors in the outfield that just didn't happen in the past. They won because they were a team and they will lose because they are not.

  1. This poll is terrible. Can't you vote "yes" without agreeing that the Sox shouldn't allow participation in the future? Whoever creates the polls on here has no idea what they are doing. List the choices as "Yes", "no" or "Other". That's all you need. No editorializing in a poll!

  1. Hopefully its nothing more than a tired arm. I guess you can get that if you start throwing too much/too hard early in the season . It seems like thats what the WBC could have done to Daisuke. Hopefully rest, rehab, and some anti-inflammatory meds can get him back to normal.

  1. This is an absolute joke and I blame the WBC for this. It must be stopped. Thank god we have some depth right now with starting pitching and it's early enough in the season where Masterson can start still after being stretched out all spring training.

Now, it appears, HE HAS FATIGUE? Does he even know what it is?
Then, his salary should be fatigued, as well. No perform...no pay

  1. Well, it looks as though there ought to be a regular policy for all pitchers that participate in the WBC. The team and the pitcher would discuss this advance of participation in the tournament .

Pitchers would return to spring training after the WBC concluded and begin activities as if it were the first day and build their arm strength over the normal duration of time. Teams would plan on having these pitchers start the regular season in extended spring training and then bring them up to the big team when the pitcher was truly ready to compete at 100% capability. That way no false expectations and teams could work within a program of their own design.

  1. Put him on the 30-day to be safe.

I'm so sick of these guys playing with injuries, putting up lousy numbers and then we find out that they had soreness, or a "click", or a bump, or fatigue or stiffness...

Rest these guys until we don't have to hear about it anymore! I'd rather rest Dice-K until June so he can dominate for the summer instead of bringing him back to early.

We shouldn't have to hear about Ortiz's wrist or knees or Drew's back or anything.

If you're hurt, sit down until it is no longer an excuse! Please and thank you.

  1. why are we not surprised about matsuzaka. the WBC needs to be put at the end of the season (if at all) so as not to adversely impact the pitching staff of all teams, not to mention position players. many of the other countries competing in the classic do not have the rigorous and competitive schedule that we do here in the states. some adjustments appear to be in order.

  1. All of this anti-WBC stuff is pretty much sour grapes that is about as Red Sox-mypopic as can be--I'm one RSN member who's embarrassed. We are like the rich person with no kids who lives in the best part of town; has a neighborhood with great services--but also think that none of our taxes should go toward schools. The WBC is and always has been bigger than any team or even MLB--it is about the long term welfare and sustainment of the game of baseball. It's already odious enough that the U.S. doesn't field nearly its best team in an international competition for a sport we invented--what would it say if one of its marquee franchises outlawed particicpation?

What this does drive that IS meaningful is the imperative for the WBC format to change--Jayson Stark's idea is the best so far. Meanwhile fellow Red Sox fans, since we're so fond of touting ourselves as baseball's cogniscenti, consider being more opened-minded...and less whiney and selfish about the short-term misfortunes of our very successful team.

  1. We pay that kind of money and we get a pitcher with problems. Great for Japan
and too bad for the Red Sox. Maybe they should give us a player for the trouble!

However this is only one part of the problem. Wait till Wake gives up 6 in two innings with that cold weather.

Posted by Edward Wollent April 15, 09 03:33 PM
  1. Ownership should decide whether or not a pitcher goes to the WBC. It's called "protecting your investment." Position players do not suffer the same potential injuries although they certainly are not immune.

  1. Wastepal, obviously the word "sport" is wasted on someone like you. All these guys played for their countries and pride is a huge thing. In soccer, the players are paid by their teams but participate in the competitions for their country on a voluntary basis. It's an honor to be chosen to play for your country. The pride of the Dutch showed that a lot of the MLB players are overpaid when a half amateur team could take down the mighty favorites..twice.
The players here make more than enough money and if they can't be prepared properly, we can't blame the WBC. In fact more players were injured in spring training this year....maybe that should go?

  1. Settle down everyone. I HATE Bud Selig. As the "Commissioner" he has disrupted tradition to benefit owners pockets and passed all of it off as enhancements that fans were demanding. He has been more a C.E.O than Commissioner and he should go down as an embarrassment to the game and its integrity.

That said, the WBC is good a thing, even with the problem of finding an ideal time to run with it. It may be that we find as much fun as the WBC is, MLB and its Spring Training start through Post-season conclusion just isn't compatible with such a tournament.

SO it is with that I say I am FINE with Daisuke having a little rest, in season or not, because our boy Theo has PREPARED our beloved Sox for this scenario. And our boy Bucholz, who I was beginning to lose faith in prior to Spring Training, came in prepared with a matured approach to his game. And it showed. I wanna see Bucholz take a turn or two in the rotation.

Oh yeah, and I let Daisuke go from my Fantasy team this off-season, kept Lester and I had Bucholz in my minors. So the irony of Daisuke going on the DL and me being able to plug Bucholz in is of great joy to me!! ;-)

  1. Unless and until the owners and MLB agree to have the WBC during a mid season break, this should be the end....I can't even say it was fun while it lasted.

Yeah man, he's really an underachiever! Geez, I wish all the Sox pitchers sucked this bad! If you had five starters all go 18-3, you'd have a record of 90-15. So unless your bullpen goes 0-57, you'd have a pretty damned good team, I think.

  1. The WBC has already become an essential element in the global growth of baseball. It isn't going away and, if you were at the Rogers Centre in Toronto a few weeks back for the USA vs Canada game, you wouldn't want it to. The WBC has already been responsible for the most exciting games played this year and that statement will likely hold through to the playoffs this October. As far as the WBC being the cause of injuries, we don't know if that allegation is true or not. What we do know is that the WBC has become the Global Warming of baseball: if anything goes wrong, jerk your knee sharply and blame the WBC.

  1. I think that Dice-K will be out of major league baseball and back in Japan within two years. He does not have the make up or stamina to pitch in the US. Last year's record was a bit of a fluke. He throws too many pitches and nibbles too much to be effective over the long haul. He will get frustrated and seek to exit his contract.

  1. The WBC is a joke. Nobody cares about it. It's like the Pro Bowl. It's nice to get the offer and the players try their best to look excited about it. It is always an honor when you can represent your country, don't get me wrong. I just feel it is a waste of time and nothing comes out of it for MLB players besides injuries or early fatigue. The baseball season is long enoug and the owners are dishing out big bucks to have players represent their team! Now what? How many injuries have to happen before Selig realizes that this just doesnt work.

  1. How the heck does Beckett get suspended for 6 games for NOT hitting a batter?
What if he actually hit the jerk, would he be out for the year? The umps are out of control and the league had better do something about it before any real harm is done to a team, these are pro ball players here, not little league.

  1. Who freakin' cares about the WBC ? If players want to be on the "homeland" team, stay there and play for them....don't sign here. They are being paid big money to play for their MLB teams. It should be in their contracts that, if they play during the WBC and go on the DL anytime during the following 60 days, they lose a certain percentage of their pay check each day they are on the DL.

  1. A lot of people seem to think that the sky is falling. Yet after today the Sox will be only one or two games behind Yankees and Rays depending on the outcome of their game. Not bad for the worst stretch of baseball since late 2006. Theo says you never have too many starting pitchers and I think we'll see some of the young ones soon. Beckett and Lester will be fine, Penny is OK so far and Wake could be starting one of his good streaks.Dice-K is needing a shutdown and reset. The hitters will come around and they will be in the thick of it all season. Is anyone predicting a Toronto or Baltimore runaway?

  1. I like the WBC, but have the damn thing after the World Series. Critics will say the players are tired from the long season, so use only players that weren't in the playoffs if that's gonna be an issue. They'll be rested up. Players used to go over and play exhibitions in Japan after the season and many play winter ball in Latin American countries, so it's not like it can't be done.

The WBC, with all its faults, for the most part was compelling baseball. What is it about the majority of fans responding here that they feel they have a right to keep baseball as their exclusive province? Three year ago DM goes down and nobody in Boston gives a rat's asterisk. Now that he's "our's," we're owed something. Come on.
Bud Selig, by the way, would have done better by the WBC if he'd never said anything.

I think the future of baseball is secure.....baseball revenue has steadily increased over the last few years.....and yes, we can complain about the WBC because of the amount of money invested in these players.....if I continue, and I will, to pay the highest ticket prices in the game, and a player on the Sox is injured and goes on the DL while not playing for the Sox, then yes, I will complain and voice opinion on the nonsense that is called the World Bud Classic...so you relax wacko
