Report: A-Rod may have used steroids in high school

Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff April 30, 2009 07:19 AM

Relaying details from an upcoming book on Alex Rodriguez by Sports Illustrated's Selena Roberts, the New York Daily News reports today that Rodriguez may have started taking steroids as early as high school and is suspected of continuing his use of performance-enhancing drugs with the New York Yankees.

dailynews300.jpg

A front-page headline (right) reads, "A-Rod book bombshell" with text below adding, "Slugger may have taken HGH while playing for the Yankees" and, "Hints he took steroids as early as high school days."

The report indicates that a high school teammate of Rodriguez's told Roberts that A-Rod took steroids before being drafted as a No. 1 pick and that his high school coach knew it -- an allegation the coach, Rich Hoffman, denied.

The book also indicates that two anonymous Yankees said they believed Rodriguez was using banned substances based on visual side effects, which reportedly led to Rodriguez gaining an unflattering nickname that referenced an increased pectoral size comparable to a woman's chest. The report also notes that a clubhouse staffer suggested management had a suspicion that the third baseman may have been juicing.

From the Daily News:

[Rodriguez earned the nickname] after he put on 15 pounds in the offseason and seemed to develop round pectorals, a condition called gynecomastia that can be caused by anabolic steroids, [Roberts] writes.

In addition, an unnamed major-leaguer is quoted as saying Rodriguez and steroid-tainted pitcher Kevin Brown were seen together with human growth hormone - HGH - in 2004.

Brown, who was named in the Mitchell Report on steroids, denied through a lawyer that he ever shared the hormone with the highest-paid player in baseball.

Two other anonymous Yankees said they believed A-Rod was using based on side effects they saw - and a clubhouse staffer said management wondered if he was using banned substances.

"No one ever asked Alex directly that I know of, but there was a lot of suspicion in house," the employee is quoted as saying.

The book, published by HarperCollins and set to be released May 12, also details Rodriguez's long relationship with Angel Presinal, a Dominican trainer banned from clubhouses after a steroid incident in 2001.

  1. Does this really shock anyone? He's a cheat. Simple as that. Let him stay w/ Yanks and never win anything.

He's a loser and will always be. I don't care how many hotties or dollars he has....deep inside he's a loser and a cheat.

  1. I love how we are supposed to believe Selena Roberts when every quote she gave in the story clipped here is "An un-named Major Leaguer", "Anonymous Yankees",. Yeah, that's really convincing believing what those unnamed sources are saying. Maybe A-rod has taken steroids and HGH his whole career, maybe not. But this book is not going to push my opinion toward yes. Rubbish the way she handled her sports illustrated story, and rubbish the way she is writing this book. I will most likely rent it from the library so as to not give her money just to see what other great sources she has to comment on.

  1. Is Selena Roberts now working for The National Enquirer? When I see her hard hitting reporting using words like "may have" and "is suspected of" I have to think what is she writing about? Hearsay, rumor, insinuation? This is the same reporter who railed against the Duke lacrosse Team without reporting all the facts but giving her opinion of the "group of privileged players of fine pedigree entangled in a night that threatens to belie their social standing as human beings". I didn't read her follow up piece on the woman who accused these students or her follow up on the professors who voted to get the students thrown out befoe the facts were known. Selena need to start writing about the facts again.

  1. Anyone recall that article in the Globe about A-Rod when the Sox were looking to sign him a few years back? He toured Harvard, expressed his longing for knowledge, frustration with the narrow worldview provided by a life in baseball, excitement about playing so close to a crimson vat of finer things? He's special.

  1. Under this kind of scrunity, A-Rod might not never be the player he once was. Considering the contract that he has and the current economic state, the New York Yankees might really struggle with an aging play club and so much money tied up in A-Rod.

  1. I'd like to know who these anonymous sources are. A-rod, not to mention me, has a right to know who is making these charges. In America we have a right to face our accuser; otherwise, it becomes something like the Salem Witch Trials. When a well-respected paper, like the Globe, can second these charges, then we will have something to talk about.

There was something about this guy I just never liked. Maybe he was too groomed, too slick? I don't know, but I do know he's a prima dona and his drug use has temporarily killed the wonderful game of baseball.

He should be kicked out and all records and stats going back to 1995 should be thrown out. And sorry Boston, that means the World Series needs to be tossed out too.

  1. Baseball is a multi-billion dollar industry. The owners, players and media get filthy rich off of it. If the players aren't happy, they go on STRIKE for MORE money. Steroid use makes the game more exciting and by making the game more exciting, fans, media sponsors and product marketers pay even more for tickets, air time and product endorsements. Through all of this, TAXPAYERS foot the bill for grand, new stadiums and see NOTHING for it. That, my friends, is the sad truth. A-Rod takes steroids and he and EVERYONE around him rakes in the dough. Don't blame the players, blame law enforcement - drug use is ILLEGAL.

  1. Is this shocking to anyone? All professional sports are tainted with steroids, HGH etc. this starts in High School and just gets more and more common in pro sports. Your eyes don't lie look at old films and videos of all 4 major sports. Football is th 500 pound elephant in the room, followed by baseball, basketball and Hocky. If you are not "Juicing" you are in the minority.

Look at the guys in the NFL draft, some of them are MONSTERs everyone needs to stop worrying just about A-Rod...LOOK AROUND YOU and open your eyes people dont get that big without help!!

But I must agree with Rob's post, above:
I love how we are supposed to believe Selena Roberts when every quote she gave in the story clipped here is "An un-named Major Leaguer", "Anonymous Yankees",. Yeah, that's really convincing believing what those unnamed sources are saying. Maybe A-rod has taken steroids and HGH his whole career, maybe not. 1. A-Rat is an inspiration to Little Leaguers like...Danny Almonte. Just cheat; get your money/contract- that's all that counts. How do you think former high school and college players who played against "The Rat" feel reading this.

Mike Greenwell made a great point when asked about steroids when he addressed the issue of opposing (CLEAN) players who didn't get the accolades (e.g. rewards; monies) on account of people like Rodriguez who felt the need to cheat in order to compete.

People like Rodriguez ought to forfeit every penny (and trophy) they absconded and be banned from the league. How can anyone say players like this are good for the game and allow them to keep motoring their stupidity through their mouths?

Posted by BTownExpress April 30, 09 09:51 AM
  1. Who cares what he did in high school? Steroids were not illegal. So while it may have been ill-advised, it was certainly not illegal or against any rules.
He has not been caught using steroids and I imagine his use of HGH is comparable to the majority of major leaguers.
He's an incredibly gifted athlete who made the move seamlessly from shortstop to third base when he came to the Yankees. And he works very hard at his craft. For those things, he deserves praise.
He has underperformed in the clutch and seems to undermine the team dynamics in the locker room. He says dumb things and has brought dishonor to his team through his too-public infidelity. For those things, he is worthy of criticism.

  1. Some people (most of the ones that have written on this post) really like to go after people like A-Rod. Here is a quote on how Roberts handled the Duke lacrosse situation.
“Roberts wrote commentary seething with hatred for ‘a group of privileged players of fine pedigree entangled in a night that threatens to belie their social standing as human beings.’ All but presuming guilt, Roberts parroted false prosecution claims that all team members had observed a ‘code of silence.’ She likened them to ‘drug dealers and gang members engaged in an anti-snitch campaign.’”
Remember, she never had any facts then either.
Maybe she should donate all of the proceeds of her upcoming book to charity.
Who is the slimeball here??? A-Rod or make it up as you go Roberts????

  1. To answer the question posed by Jeff Bezos: Jeff, there are several reasons, here are two: 1.) Because sports are fun. Watching sports, talking about sports, and reading about sports is a fun way to break away from the reality of life. You should try it, it sounds like you need to relax. 2.) Because, weather or not you want to admit it, athletes are role models for children. They look at A-Hole and say: "he cheats and he is rich and famous, why shouldn't I?" Don't kid yourself, most children can be that shallow regardless of their upbringing and athletes need to be more accountable for their actions. Jeff, get a life, you wannbe intellectual...

There is only one Home run KIng and thats the sultan of swat. if he had played outfield earlier in his career we would not be having this conversation Ruth would have hit easily 800 probably closer to 900, look at the stats people not just the home run numbers.

  1. It's funny that so many posts say some version of "who cares" when to have posted here in the first place one has to have cared about the subject enough to read the article.
Selena Roberts is not my idea of a first-rate investigative journalist, and the evidence listed is not overwhelming. I just heartily dislike Alex Rodriguez, and shamelessly read whatever looks like it might pose problems for the Yankees. This interest on my part is one way of saying the Yankees are an exceptionally successful ballclub, an ongoing competitive challenge to the club I root for, and that Rodriguez is a very successful ballplayer whose skills one takes very seriously, like it or not.
That being said, I heartily enjoy imagining this seemingly arrogant and self-obsessed dude being called, shall we say, "B.T." by his teammates. I fill in the words and chortle fiendishly. It's shameless, but I blame three generations of passionate and waaaay often humiliated Red Sox fandom in my veins :-)

The higher they fly, the harder they fall. The rest of A-Rod's life will suck, but it's poetic justice. Honesty is the best policy - there ain't no hiding place from the Father of creation.

First he denied and lied, then he fixed his lies by telling the truth, but not the real truth because he got caught in a bunch of lies again. Then he gets "hurt" or was he kept out to get "clean"? Nobody will know the real truth, so why beat a dead horse?
Plenty of folks say "Clemens. Giambi, Bonds, and the rest of the "greats" we blindly looked up to, have poisoned Americas sport." But who can blamed them? The real ones to blame are the money hungry, never satisfied owners who wave the almighty dollar at them and the corrupt baseball union for fighting enhanced drug testing for so long.

Hoffman knew it, because he was also the Athletic Director, but I must admit, A-Rod wasn't the only one on roids, the school was big on sports and several guys were on them. Hoffman did whatever it took to win the national championship at our school, people just looked the other way.

  1. Performance enhancing drugs should be legalized because it is likely that more than 50% of MLB players are on them anyways. So might as well level the playing field and not engage in this game of who is clean and who is not and end this hypocrisy once and for all

I have no issues with A-Fraud's drug/steroid use/abuse and I don't have any issues with him being a Yankee. However, I do think he is a low life and classless individual both on and off the field and I for one am not going to to be buying a baseball jersey or cap that has his name on it

QUOTE ~ We didnt get beat, we got out milligramed. When we got beat we found out what they were on and took it. 1. To all the idiots out there... regardless of whether steroid use is or was against the explicit rules in MLB, Little League or High School Sports... they are ILLEGAL, therefore their use is ILLEGAL and using them to improve your performance in a game is CHEATING! Get a freaking clue!

  1. I agree we absolutely need to find out what the nickname was and use it whenever he is at Fenway....!

  1. If he his taking them, his dealer must leave town every September.

  1. I am a die-hard Sox fan and I hate the Yankees. But, come on, do all of you seriously think that our guys didn't use? What about Ortiz? The guy's stats majorly changed after players started getting busted for steroids left and right - coincidence? Sure, we all hate A-Rod - and we all HATE the Yankees - but grow up. There are a million reasons to be grateful he didn't end up with the Sox - he's a major clubhouse distraction, doesn't perform in the outfield, other players don't like him - but to chastise him for something that some of own more than likely did is ridiculous. Can't we all just move on???

  1. When people use the "ALL athletes do it" I don't agree with this statement, because I do not believe that "ALL" do it. Another post says that perhaps Hank Aaron could have done it as well, that's being just like Selena, don't you think?

Maybe he did it in HS maybe not...but why deny it once, and then go on national TV and admit to using it "once and didn't like it." Lie once forever a liar, never to be believed again.

  1. who gives a rat's butt?? it's probably so rampant that they'll just cover up and life will go on......only effective way to win is to stop attending or watching MLB...

  1. ANOTHER NON FAN OF A ROD I HATE THIS DUDE A REAL SCUM BAG

  1. "Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts, who broke the story that A-Rod flunked a steroid screening in 2003, reveals fellow Bombers nicknamed the third baseman "B---h T--s" in 2005." (If you don't think that the fans at Fenway are going to be chanting "Bitch Tits" when he returns to Boston June 9th then you are dumber than, well, A-Rod)

  1. Actually Babe Ruth is the TRUE home run champion! With all due respect to Hammerin Hank...it took Aaron nearly 4,000 more career at bats to hit 41 more home runs than Ruth...The Sultan of Swat!!!

  1. From the NY Daily News......
" ...fellow Bombers nicknamed the third baseman "B---h T--s" in 2005."

  1. Difficult to write the teammate nickname without getting censored, but from what I read in the NY papers, it was this (I trust you can fill in the blanks):

    Bi--h T-ts

My guess is that it might become a Fenway taunt.

  1. i can't say that i am surprised this comes at a bad time for the yanks, a-rod will soon be back in the lineup and now this is another media circus. The Red Sox have to be VERY GLAD THE TRADE THEY WERE GOING TO MAKE FELL THROUGH! The Yankees are stuck with him for the next NINE YEARS ! good ,serves the bastards right !!!!!!

  1. Seriously is this really a surprise? All you have to do is look at the guys body and know he does steroids, always has, and still does. He does not have the body of a baseball player, but more like a weight lifter. I hope he ends up paying for all the cheating he has done in the game, as well as anyone else who has done it, or they find out is doing it. This cheating needs to stop, it's not fair to the players who play the game right and honestly!!!!!!

  1. I am happy that at least the man when cornered did fess up. Gains a little bit more respect from the common man. Unfortunate that he was in the game when you had to get an edge. Too much pressure and I'm sure some bad advice. Roger and Rafael are still miffed about their results. Hopefully more players will come clean and the game will continue. I'm hoping I can get Roger on my fantasy team by July

  1. the yankees are stuck with him and his HUGE CONTRACT FOR THE NEXT NINE YEARS !!!!!! GOOD NO ONE DESERVES THIS DOG MORE THAN THE YANKEES !!!!!!!!

Posted by richard April 30, 09 02:09 PM
  1. Wonderful News!!!! I really think A Rod should be banned for life from baseball and be forced to pay back every dollar he ever earned from MLB and his endorsements directly to Red Sox fans. This way, the Yankees will get punishment for their cooperstion in his illegal activities.

  1. I am in no way defending A-Fraud here, but at this point......there is no player on any major league team where it would surprise me to find out they were using steroids or HGH. It was so prevelent in the game, and the players wanted to get better, hit more HR's, and get bigger contracts. I think that we, as Boston fans, shouldn't be so naive to think that none of the Red Sox players ever used. I won't point fingers at anyone, b/c who knows at this point? The game seems to be getting cleaner, but don't forget that they still aren't testing for HGH.

  1. Selena Roberts needs to first off shut her mouth. She wasted a lot of time writing a book on :1) someone else's life, and 2) informations that she has no clue is actually true or not. So what if Alex used any performance enhancing drugs in the past. It was in the past, everyone needs to just stop worrying about it and move on. He's a good player with a good attitude. I would still love for him to be a role model for my kids. He is never in trouble for drinking, recreational drugs, or weapons. Personally, i would love to see alex purchase all of Selena's book's and light them all on fire as just a slap in her face. I want to find something that she did wrong in her past and write a book on it to try to humiliate her.

  1. They Just Looking For Something Or Someone To Keep Him Down All The Time . M.Y.O.B His Life And What He Wants To Do With It Has Nothing To Do With Anyone Else . If He Used Steriods In His School There's Nothing You Can Do About It Now So Back Off . Either Way He's Going To Be On The Yankees And Play For 9-10 Years More And Get Paid So Why Should He Care What Other People Think . He's The Best Player The Yankees Got, They Need Him . I Dont Care What Anyone Thinks Im Always Going To Be An Alex Rodriguez Fan . Love You A-rod Keep Doing What You Want To Do !!
