Roberts added to NESN roster

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff April 30, 2009 02:48 PM

Dave Roberts's legs are already a part of Red Sox lore. Now fans will get to know his voice as well.

NESN announced today that Roberts, the former Red Sox outfielder and postseason hero, has joined the network to serve as a studio analyst. Roberts will join Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley and Jim Rice on NESN's pre- and post-game shows.

“We are thrilled to have Dave join our team of outstanding studio analysts,” said Joel Feld, NESN’s executive vice president of programming and executive producer. “Dave is an icon in Red Sox Nation. He has a deep knowledge of the game and understands the passion of Red Sox fans.”

Roberts will make his NESN debut this Monday from the new Yankee Stadium when the Red Sox play the Yankees. During the game, he will also join NESN’s Red Sox broadcast team of Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy in the booth for a couple of innings.

Forever known for his crucial, season-saving stolen base in the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees, Roberts recently retired after 10 years in the major leagues. He played for four other teams besides the Red Sox, compiling a .266 career batting average with 243 stolen bases.

  1. Type your comment here...Hopefully Roberts will allow NESN to get rid of Jim Rice. Jim adds nothing to the pre- and post-game shows.

  1. Good move. I had a feeling that he would be in the mix of NESN announcers.

  1. Great to have you in Boston, Dave. You will forever be remembered for your great stolen base. Certainly, the most memorable 90 feet in New England history! Also, should the need arise in September when rosters expand to 40, you won't need to fly far to re-join the team.

  1. So who got bumped from the "team of outstanding studio analysts" to make room for Dave Roberts?

  1. So is Heidi Watney out now?

  1. Heidi Watney is a joke. She does not know baseball, and is a bobble-headed ex-model who can no longer find work other than to stiffly read cue cards under a hand held shade while fixing her bleached hair every 2 minutes. She is an insult to sports fans, hire someone who knows baseball NESN.

  1. Anyone heard Dave Roberts on the Bill Simmons Podcast? Fantastic. He is so friendly, intelligent, and well-spoken. What a legend. Red Sox Nation welcomes him with open arms.

  1. Welcome Dave Roberts, steal the show

  1. Jim Rice is fine. Heidi is doing a great job especially this season. She had some tough shoes to fill in Tina C. It's exciting to hear about Dave Roberts. If I were to try to find something to criticize it might be TC's voice. After an hour it starts to sound a bit squeaky. Maybe they should use some EQ to help him grow a bigger pair. All in all if you travel around and compare NESN to baseball coverage elsewhere you will see that NESN is the class of the league. Heck, I'll take NESN over any national network. Broadcasting only looks easy with pros like Orsillo and Remy calling the game every night. NESN's baseball content both technical and editorial is first rate. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know how to make a TV show.

  1. After Dave saved game 4 in 2004, the least NESN can do is give him a job!

  1. in case no one has noticed....Lou Merloni is missing from the NESN pages.

  1. Today's Red Sox broadcast (May 25, 2009) is wonderful. It has been a joy to watch it. It represents the best in baseball broadcasting.

  1. Robert's is excellent, much more comfortable than Rice and Eckersley.
Different style but every bit as good as Remy.

  1. GREAT ADDITION...KNOWS THE GAME AND I'M ALWAYS LISTENING TO NEW INSIGHTS HE GIVES AS AN ANALYST. HE AND DON ARE THE PERFECT PAIR.
TC'S VOICE IS PITCHED SO HIGH IT HITS THE BACKSTOP. TELL HIM TO WEAR BOXER SHORTS INSTEAD OF BRIEFS.
    WE MISS JERRY.
