The Red Sox have added more pitching depth to their organization this afternoon, and this acquisition is a familiar name.

According to a source familiar with the talks, pitcher Kason Gabbard has been traded back to the Red Sox. While it's uncertain what the Rangers will receive in return, the Dallas Morning News is reporting it is for cash considerations.

Gabbard, who turned 27 on April 8, began his career with the Red Sox organization in 2000 after he was selected in the 29th round of the amateur draft.

After battling injuries for much of his minor league career, he made his big-league debut with the Sox in 2006, going 1-3 with a 3.51 ERA in seven games (four starts).

A year later, the lefthander was 4-0 with a 3.71 ERA for the Sox in seven starts before being dealt to the Rangers, along with outfielders David Murphy and Engel Beltre, for reliever Eric Gagne at the July 31 trading deadline.

Gagne was a bust with the Sox and departed as a free agent after the '07 season, while Gabbard went 4-4 in parts of two seasons with the Rangers. He missed much of last season with an elbow injury, and the Rangers converted him to a reliever in spring training this season.

He was pitching at Triple A Oklahoma City -- Tuesday, he allowed six runs in an inning.

The Red Sox have assigned him to Triple A Pawtucket, according to the Morning News report, and are expected to send him to extended spring training, though the club has not confirmed this.

We'll have more on this as it develops.

  1. This is a terrific move. I loved this guy when he was here, as he showed several glimpses of excellence on the mound. Working with Coach Farrell could very well make Gabbard a full-time Major Leaguer.

For a pitcher especially, going from Texas' system to Boston's is like going from the basement to the penthouse.

Seeing the way Yankee Stadium is playing, we can't have too many lefties on the 40 man roster.

  1. A long man now that Masterson is on to the starting rotation? Or just the old adage about too much pitching? A decent arm for cash is a good deal either way.

  1. A good insurance policy for the Sox. Gabbard looked comfortable pitching for the Sox. I am sure John Farrell will get him back in rythmn and he'll prove a valuable spot starter in July and August.

  1. Let's hope we can get Kason back to where he was right before somebody (not me) traded him for Eric Gag Me. Kason looked very promising and was on a roll just before he was traded. I was sad to see him go especially when he was performing so well. Right after he was traded, he got hurt. I hope the powers that be give him a chance to get back to where he was ... a promising lefty who was winning games.

  1. I really liked Kason Gabbard when he was in Boston before... he was pitching so well as a spot-starter at the time he was traded, and considering Gagne turned out to be a dud, losing Gabbard was so unfortunate. I'm very confident that Gabbard will make the Sox pitching staff even better, whether Terry Francona and John Farrell have him as a spot-starter while Daisuke Matsuzaka is on the 15-day DL (allowing Justin Masterson to return to the bullpen), or whether they put him in the bullpen.

  1. I hope Kason Gabbard will come with his own uniform, unlike Darren O'Day who had to wear Gabbard's uni after he was acquired off waivers... If not, then we may end up with two Oki's or an extra Ortiz...

  1. Fantastic news. I hated it when Theo traded him for Gagne, you could just tell that was going to be a huge mistake. There is no way the Sox should have given a bag of used baseballs for Gagne, never mind Murphy and Kason, along with Beltre. Hopefully being back in Boston will set him straight, now that he'll have a decent pitching coach and some actual pitchers to mentor (none of that in the TX organization). Welcome home Kason!!

  1. Welcome back, you can never have too much pitching. This makes up somewhat for the bust that Gagne was.

  1. God, I cannot get enough of this front office. Granted the Gagne move failed but that was a gamble they had to take, and they ended up winning in spite of him. And the fact that the Sox have dealt away so many mid-major prospects over the past few years who have gone on to succes elsewhere, Murphy being one of them, is proof even more positive of how well these guys have done in truly stockpiling quality players in th eminors and via the draft.

Gabbard was on the cusp of a possible 12 winner #4 starter spot here and has all the makings of a successful reclamation project and perhaps a poor man's Bruce Hearst down the line. Worst case, we use some of that $ I helped contribute via $6+ beers for the past decade to bolster the roster with pitching, instead of overpaying in the offseason for a bloated-value 20 HR guy who hits into more double plays and Ks than he actually contributes at the dish. Thank freaking God for this kind of thinking in the Sox front office. Amen for Theo-logy.

  1. all this enthusiasm over a damaged pitcher with a bum elbow, coming off one inning, 6 runs allowed...Do people think the pitching starved Rangers would give away a healthy arm??? Come on folks, calm down

  1. He's spent half his career on the disabled list; why is everyone so excited? Obviously, we hope he does well coming back to Boston, but I wouldn't say this is the steal of the century just yet.
