To boo or not?

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 23, 2009 10:05 PM

We all know Mark Teixeira makes his debut at Fenway Park today. The question is: What are Red Sox fans going to do when Teixeira comes to the plate?

I wanted to share one reader's opinion, and ask yours.

Amalie, I just read something that said Texiera is expecting brutal treatment from fans (booing and whatnot, I'm sure). However, I think that will just stroke his ego. I say we organize all of the fans to give him the "silent treatment." Rather than boo, when he is either introduced or comes up to bat, Fenway goes silent and, even better, everyone turns their back. I think it would freak him out a bit - wouldn't it be weird if Fenway were quiet when he was introduced? My fiance gives me the silent treatment sometimes and it is WAY worse than if she booed me (so to speak). Help get the word out - tomorrow night, we don't hate Texiera because we don't even care who he is! - Nathan

So what do you think people should do? Leave us a comment or vote in the survey below ...

  1. Red Sox fans can do one thing. be a class act. Plain and simple. Though i'm expecting some booing to happen. Its part of the game.

  1. Great plan! I think booing any NYY is so cliche anymore. Having all (or even most) of Fenway go completely silent for his at-bat(s) would say a hell of a lot more than just booing another Yankee. Wish I was going to be there, but I'll be watching for sure!! Silent treatment people! :) Go Sox!

  1. What should we do? We should go back in time and offer $200 million.

  1. I think this would be AWESOME !!! What a great idea ! How could anyone concentrate on hitting when Fenway is dead silent ?

Posted by Budvar April 23, 09 10:34 PM
  1. I love this idea, although I doubt this would happen. Teixeira was quoted as saying he liked being booed in Baltimore because it got him more riled up and focused. So lets give him what he DOESN'T want. Great idea Nathan, good luck spreading the word though haha.

I just hope this is the year we finally ditch the "Yankees suck" chant. But again, with thousands of intoxicated fans at these games, I realize that will never happen.

  1. What should we do? Pray to god he doesn't hit a home run.

  1. That's silly. Just boo.

  1. The Silent Treatment would be amazing..... but how to pull it off??? There is no way to tell everyone, unless you set up outside all the gates with huge signs that are quick and simple and to the point.....

  1. ''Buuuuuuuhh'' for Teixeira

  1. LMAO at Budvar..just boo his ass..people are drunk and such-anything other than booing is too complicated. By the way, it's already after 8am on 4/24/09..? I must be in a time-warp. GO SOX! I'm going Saturday-80 degrees! Can't wait.....

  1. So he got fired up from being booed in Baltimore? That explains why he only went 3-14 and batted .214 in their opening series. hahahaha. The jerk is hoping the Red Sox don't boo him and is only saying it fires him up now in trying to use reverse psychology.

  1. I hope it's not too late for this, but the obvious reaction is a silent treatment for Tiexiera and a STANDING OVATION for Mike Lowell. Mike was the odd man out in this deal. He is hitting better than Tex at the moment. We all know Mike and love him....LET'S SHOW IT.

  1. I like this idea. Tell everyone!!

  1. I'll be there on Saturday and I'll be silent for Teixeira. I love that idea. I sure hope enough people read here to at least make a difference in decibels!

  1. Have to agree with RS5709...Orioles fans booed and his bat went fairly silent. I think his numbers were a product of playing for teams and in ballparks where there was no real pressure to win...I think he'll suffer under the Fenway faithful's constant barrage of clever as well as mean spirited treatment. I wonder how loud the Boston version of the roll call chant will be for Mr. Leigh Teixeira?

  1. It will be hard to silence an army of angry Sox fans. I'll be among them and I plan on giving him the customary treatment. If the yankees are involved we're just plain not going to take the respectful approach.

  1. Cool idea Nate, I have never been a fan of booing, and I am not sure I would join in for any player (maybe certain Yankees and when umps mess up a call... the silent treatment is would be awesome, but it would only work with 100% participation... there will be Yankee fans there cheering, so the boos will drown them out.

  1. I say keep the yankees suck chant because, well, the yankees suck! As for Teixeira, let's not forget that he said he was using the Sox to get more money from the yanks. This is the reason to boo him. Boo him long and loud!

  1. While I'm agnostic about how to treat Texeira, I would like to come out in firm support of Nathan's fiance experimenting with a little booing. We all should give it a shot. When I'm reading Amalie Benjamin columns instead of doing the dishes, I deserve a good boo.

  1. The Silent Treatment would be great. Booing can only spur Teixeira on. Silence would freak him out.

    Posted by Rick V April 24, 09 01:37 AM
  1. A lot of us were worried that if we got Teixera, Mike Lowell would be traded. We clearly got the better deal, so we should be glad Tex is playing -- not particularly well -- for the Yankees.

Go, Mike, go! We like Mike! We like Mike!

Posted by Sandy April 24, 09 01:37 AM
  1. Who cares about Teixeira? He's another high priced free agent sucking away the life blood of the Yankees. It's not like he betrayed Boston or the Red Sox like Damon and Clemens did. Teixeira has never been a Red Sock and doesn't own the team anything.

Posted by RickD April 24, 09 01:42 AM
  1. If you're silent and turn your back, you show Teixiera you care -- just as if you boo loudly.

The only way out of this paradox? Boo mildly. Treat him like any other Yankee.

Posted by Jack Bauer April 24, 09 01:44 AM
  1. I agree, I don't think he's worth the air to be honest. I kind of wrote the same thing on the MLB Boards that he is not orth all the print he is getting. I think he is going to be another Sierra- paid alot of money- a very streaky player and nowhere near his worth.

  1. World Series MVP Mike Lowell would have been the odd man out. Boo Teixeira. Standing Ovation for Mike Lowell.

Posted by Ward April 24, 09 02:58 AM
  1. Amalie, normally you're on point, but this whole thing is just stupid. You guys are really stretching this rivalry now to sell more papers. Who really cares about this? Why not chronicle the history of the team, or a hard hitting interview with new Sox on what they expect this to be like? Enough of the Texeira nonsense!

Posted by Joe April 24, 09 03:55 AM
  1. Better yet everyone bring signs welcoming "Mr. Leigh Teixeira" to Boston.
I mean we all know who wears the pants in that family. Why not let Mark the robot know that we know that too.

  1. Best idea I've heard in a month. All this guy did was make a buisness deal. So let's play ball. He opted to go with the Yankees. Let's play ball. He got the $$$ he wanted. Let's play ball. To hell with trash talk and the "in your face" stuff. Let's play ball.

  1. People have booed bad performances since the first caveman put on a revue. What a ridiculous, narcissistic idea that this would stop here and now on 'Nathan's' say-so. That this insipid notion merits a post reflects poorly upon a sportswriter long on time and short on ideas.

Posted by Mister Snitch April 24, 09 06:17 AM
  1. I can't believe you are all actually spending time on "to boo or not to boo." Either way, it just proves how badly you wanted him on your team and how much your owners disappointed you by their inability to close the door. Whether you boo or you're quiet...one fact remains. He's not wearing your uniform and you wish that he was!

  1. Honestly, I couldn't care less how we Red Sox fans respond to Teixeira's first appearance at Fenway. It is more important to cheer Mike Lowell and show him that we, truly, do appreciate his still being our 3B man. So, for Tex, boo, turn your back or applaud respectfully. For Mike, cheer loudly and long!

  1. Here is a sign idea for the game tonight...

Someone should have the following sign:

    Teixeira - OBP .345, SLG .467, BA .222 Salary: $20M

    Lowell - OBP .362, SLG .574, BA .315 Salary: $12M

    MIKE LOWELL - PRICELESS

Posted by ToofarawayfromBoston April 24, 09 08:23 AM
  1. Great idea. I recommended this to my Sox friends when Damon came back to play at Fenway for the first time. The silent treatment gives one message and that is "you are nothing to me". GO SOX!

    Posted by ABSoxFan4Life April 24, 09 08:30 AM
  1. Teixeira should actually be more hated by Red Sox Nation than A-Fraud. Think about it. Rodriguez at least did everything he could to make a trade from Texas work out. The only thing Teixeira did was use the Red Sox to get a comfy contract out of the Yankees. He admitted that the Yankees were always his first choice. Let's not waste our energy on this guy. Turn your back AND give him the silent treatment. Joba the Putz is the one we should be booing!!

  1. So Red Sox fans were ready to show Mike Lowell the door and welcome Mark Teixeira to the team when it "appeared" that he would sign. When Teixeira (how dare he spurn the Sox) sign with the Yankees, he became public enemy #1. Oh yeah and Mike Lowell, we want you to stay now. This is so laughable. I'm sure that the "classy" Red Sox fans won't spew any expletives (Yankees s***) and will be extremely cordial to Teixeira. Parents, don’t bring your kids to these games unless you want them to learn a few nasty words from the Fenway Faithful. The Red Sox fans will be nasty and vulgar this weekend.

  1. Great suggestion with the silent treatment! And to show our support for the best 3rd baseman in the Majors, everyone should go wild when Mike Lowell is introduced. He was the one who was going to be on the block if Boston got Tex. I think a huge ovation for Lowell would also send a message. We got the better end of the deal!!! :)

Posted by HotCornerFan April 24, 09 08:57 AM
  1. Why boo him? It will be like another slap in the face to Lowell. He already looks like a natural Yankee. Kind of a pretty boy, over rated, boring. My prediction is that by the end of the season Red Sox fans will hate Nick "look at me" Swisher more than Texeira.

Posted by Orange Julius April 24, 09 09:12 AM
  1. Everyone should hold up newspapers, as if reading them when Teixiera introduced. We do that at Maryland basketball games and it is an awesome display of indifference.

Posted by Ben Ben the Fisherman April 24, 09 09:13 AM
  1. To add to the silent treatment, the Globe should hand out free papers to everyone as they walk into the gates, when Tex comes to bat, everyone open them up and just completely ignore the at bat.. That would be fantastic

  1. stevefromwaltham, apparently you surround yourself by Red Sox fans who wanted Teixeira. There were many who did not - just as many, really, did not want ARod. Believe me, we got the better part of both of those deals, in my opinion.

Oh, by the way, you must be one of those NYY fans who wore their "Red Sox S*ck" t-shirts at Yankee Stadium and got ejected for refusing to turn the shirt inside out or remove it. Talk about "class.." Oh, and how about the riot police having to come out on to the field at Yankee Stadium because their fans were throwing garbage... Yep! Class, all the way...

Thanks to the Sox ownership's continued practice of allowing ticket agencies to buy up all the non season tickets you have to win the lottery to take your kids to a game.

  1. The silent treatment is a far better choice. Why give this fraud the satisfaction of thinking we are jealous of the Yankees for having signed him. From the reports I've read, he's exactly where he belongs, with all of the other world-class phonies. Tex supposedly loathed A-Rod, but when Rodriguez's steroid use leaked, Tex made the sickening, astonishing statement: "We all love him." Talk about the ultimate fraud! He could've just said, "We've got his back," or "we stand behind our teammate." But no, being the sleazy, ersatz person he is, he chose the exaggerated route.

Posted by Brian G. Walsh April 24, 09 11:18 AM
  1. This whole discussion is so unnecessary. Why not just let each person react the way he/she feels like doing at the time? The Globe and Red Sox fans look very bush league by carrying on like this, and by carrying on a vendetta against Teixeira to begin with.

They also, don't even tip a cap to Joe Torre one of the best managers they ever had in their ridiculously staged pre-game ceremony. I wouldn't even waste my breath booing or even acknowledging Texiera. Why? He's just another money-grubbing egomaniac with no soul, who went to the highest bidder. And surprise, suprise, it was the team who thinks the team that spends the most money on over-priced free agents should win the World Series by default.

I agree with the idea that it's not like he's a Damon or Clemens and used to play for us. For some reason this does not apply to A-Roid in my book. Probably since I've always disliked him and booing him is not about him not playing here, it's about how much I dislike him.

Posted by Clashfan April 24, 09 02:33 PM
  1. I definitely think Red Sox fans should give Mark Teixeira the silent treatment when he steps into the batter's box this weekend at Fenway, and I agree that booing has become so cliche that it's enough to turn your gut. While Teixeira may not be a bad person, it is quite clear he has a seious axe to grind with the Red Sox, and given the fact that Scott "PIt-bull" Boras is his agent, is all the more reason to give him, and a few other Yankee players the silent treatment. In any event, I'll be watching this series very closely, and I hope Sox fans give the silent treatment when it's needed.

  1. Dane Thompson, GREAT IDEA!!!!!! Booing Teixeira will only make Mikey feel hurt again. Giving him the silent treatment and giving Mikey a standing ovation, which he truly deserves is what absolutely should be done. Mikey is so loved here, and would have been crushed if he got traded. Teixeira only wanted the money, Mikey took the home town discount, because he loves it here. I for one never wanted Teixeira here, and was celebrating when I heard he wasn't. Mikey is the classiest man in baseball, and needs to know that he is still loved by the fans, even if Theo for some strange reason doesn't like Mikey, even though everybody else loves the man. So please everyone, silent for Tex, standing O for our beloved Mikey!!!!!!!

It has to do with Tex making his decision criteria 1) taking the money, which you couldn't blame him for but then attributing it to 2) his wife's prefererences for shopping, which is a weak copout and no criteria for making a decision and worthy of disrespect for the stupidity of the concept. This is instead of 3) making his decision on the basis of a solid winning system, coach and team chemistry and instead 4) joining the annual march of perennial losers like him who join the disjointed and aging Yankees for the money. Its OK, they screw their jig$aw puzzle piece$ at the first indication of a letdown, see Abreu, Bobby and Sheffield, Gary. And they inexplicably hold places for players who are DONE, Damon, Matsui, Jeter at Short... I say we throw a ball at his fat ass and put him on it.

  1. Ignore the ego maniac!! He thinks that because he signed to play with the Spankees that he deserves to be recognized as a Red Sox killer,Horse Manure!! He's an average to above average Defensive 1rst baseman. He's mired in a slump and can't hit his weight.....Treat him like a rookie show no respect, don't boo him and give him the satisfaction of his believing he's somehow now connected to the rivalry..IGNORE HIM !!!!

  1. He's batting .222 and has been overrated from the beginning of this process. He was in a market that included him and Manny (who had other issues keeping people away). The idea that this guy is as many times better than Lowell or Youk as the comparison of his salary to either of theirs suggested is laughable. We dodged a bullet by not listening to the trigger happy/have to have a big trade every year contingent. The team was a win away from the World Series without one of their best starters and has upgraded the bullpen, added depth to their staff, and updated a ballpark in a way that draws more fans rather than keep them away. Let's get over this 2003 inferiority complex with the Yankees and enjoy this season.

  1. Give him a standing ovation as a way to express our gratitude for not taking us for a financial ride in the neighborhood of some $180,000.000. Based on his numbers thus far, he really stuck it to the Evil Empire. Additionally, we were able to shore up ball players we can be proud of (Pedrioa, Youkilis, Lester, etc.). On the other hand, I would not be opposed to booing the bum either.
    God Redsox!
