CLEVELAND -- Both Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew are out of tonight's lineup with minor injuries. Youkilis was drilled with a pitch on the left side by Indians starter Anthony Reyes in the first inning last night.

Youkilis's side was already sore from being hit with a pitch in the same area last week. Manager Terry Francona said he would give Youkilis today off and hoped he'd be ready to go tomorrow in Tampa. Drew had his tight left quadriceps act up again. Francona indicated it was tougher to sit Drew because he liked the Drew-Fausto Carmona matchup even though Drew is 0 for 4 against him in the regular season. Drew did hit a memorable grand slam off Carmona in the 2007 American League Championship Series. Youkilis is 0 for 3 against Carmona.

  • Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 47 pitches in a bullpen session this afternoon after throwing long toss from about 200 feet, manager Terry Francona said. The schedule isn't set in stone, but Francona thinks Matsuzaka will throw another bullpen on Saturday and then the team will decide where he'll go on a rehabilitation assignment and for how long. Francona suggested that the pitcher might need more than one rehab start, but it appears Matsuzaka, who has been on the disabled list since April 15 with a shoulder strain, is already feeling as if he could pitch much sooner than that. The Sox are 11-1 during his absence.

"Its been a while since I threw off a mound so there were times when my command wasn't quite there, but I felt I could put a lot on the ball and the shoulder itself is great," said Matsuzaka through his interpreter, Masa Hoshino.

  • Julio Lugo got the night off after playing his first game since July 11 of last season Tuesday night. Lugo said he felt some stiffness around his surgically repaired knee (near the quad) but nothing major. Nick Green is starting tonight.

  • Rocco Baldelli looks as if he's moving much better while recovering from a left hamstring strain. Baldelli went on the disabled on April 21, and it appears he'll be coming off the DL around May 6th. The team hasn't decided whether Baldelli will need a game or two of rehab in Pawtucket or somewhere else in the Sox system.

  • Jason Bay was presented with the Chuck Tanner Good Guy Award by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

  • Assistant general manager Jed Hoyer is with the team on this leg of the trip. The Sox usually have a front office member on the road in case a move needs to be made.

  • The Indians placed DH Travis Hafner on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder. Hafner, who had surgery on the shoulder in the offseason, was originally in the Tribe lineup.
