MINNEAPOLIS - I raised the question in a previous blog about whether David Ortiz would benefit from playing the field more to take his mind off his at-bats. The reason the Sox don't do it is because they're afraid Ortiz is going to get hurt. They hold their collective breath everytime he has to play the field in interleague play or in the World Series.

In these times you would think you'd try anything, but for now the Red Sox aren't going to do it.

One of the reasons the Minnesota Twins let Ortiz go was because he was injury-prone. All members of the Twins organization lament that decision especially given the success Ortiz has had. But one parallel going around is Mo Vaughn, whose body turned on him and was unable to rekindle his career when his knees failed him at age 35.

* Joe Mauer is getting a normal day off. A huge break for the Red Sox this afternoon. Mauer, 26, was hitting .438 with 10 homers and 29 RBI in 80 at-bats. He has a .525 on base percentage, an 875 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.400. There still haven't been extension talks in place for Mauer whose 4-year, $33 million deal is up after the 2010 season.

* The Twins have also have Joe Crede out of the lineup today.

Here's the rest of the Twins lineup:
Carlos Gomez - CF
Matt Tolbert - 2B
Justin Morneau - 1B
Jason Kubel - DH
Michael Cuddyer - RF
Brian Busher -3B
Mike Redmond - C
Delmon Young - LF
Nick Punto - SS
Francisco Liriano - SP
