Jason Bay is “OK” after leaving Saturday’s 10-6 Red Sox victory over the Rays with a left ankle injury, and there is a good chance he will play Sunday, manager Terry Francona said.
Bay was pinch hit for by Jeff Bailey in the top of the sixth inning. The previous inning, Bay had fouled a ball off of his left ankle, which produced a contusion.
“When he started running the bases, it felt kind of a like a stinger, is the way he [described it],” Francona said. “We got him out, and he actually said he feels a lot better. He probably inflamed a nerve or something, because it was shooting up his leg.”
When asked if Bay might play Sunday, Francona’s response was optimistic.
“I actually think he’s OK,” he said. “But we’ve got [Jonathan] Van Every on alert, and we’ll check him out in the morning.”
