A few of Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell's notable comments during his interview on sports radio WEEI's "Dale and Holley Show" this afternoon.

On Joba Chamberlain hitting Jason Bay with a pitch last night, and whether Farrell feels the need to discuss "the game situation" with his pitcher when retaliation might be in order.

Farrell: "Well, typically, we let the game play out itself, because I think our guys, for one, have each others' backs and they're certainly going to be supportive if a situation like that were to arise. Again, speaking specifically about last night, [Chamberlain] strikes out 12 guys, doesn't seem to have too many command issues, and if there was a purpose or intent to throw up and in, or if the intent was even further than that, to send a clear-cut message, you can disguise it a little bit more than with a first-pitch pitch in the middle of the back to Jason Bay. So, those things aren't forgotten. We know that there's a history there between the pitcher in New York and our guys here, so, not to say that he was specifically out to do that, but I think history speaks for itself. And we've got a number of games left with these guys."

On Josh Beckett's inconsistent start to the season:

Farrell: "Without a doubt, it has been the consistency, of the lack of consistency, of him pitching in the bottom of the strike zone. He did a better job of that last night, much like he did on Opening Day against Tampa, but in between there have been some fastballs that have been elevated. That's where the extra-base hits have come, that where a couple of the home runs have come from, such as the case last night to Johnny Damon. But when he's down in the bottom of the strike zone, because he does throw strikes and hitters around the league know that he's going to be around the plate regardless if it's 93 to 96 [miles per hour], but he's still got to locate in the bottom of the zone, which he did a better job of last night."

On whether Jon Lester's up-and-down start to the season is related to his large jump in innings from 2007 to 2008:

Farrell: "Oh, I don't think there's an attribute to the innings of last year at all. I think if you were to evaluate the individual pitches that he has, both in terms of velocity compared to a year ago and action compared to a year ago, I think you'll see a very similar starting pitcher for us. There have been some games, specifically his first two starts of the season, where his pitch location and pitch execution were not as consistent as he has been over the last four games. . . . {He has been very similar to the pitcher] he was a year ago at [this] time. Now, that's not justifiable with what he's currently doing, at 2-2, among the league leaders in strikeouts, and he's certainly one of the leaders on our staff. We're very cognizant of the amount of innings that he threw last year, the increase over 2007, but we feel very confident that the path that Jon is on right now and the consistency that he is going to provide for us, he will be a leader on our staff going forward."

  1. I look forward to Bob Watson's review of Chamberlain's HBP of Bay last night and expect the same consideration as he gave when suspending Josh Beckett. To hit a player after he hit a home run in a previous AB would seem as intentional, if not more, than what Beckett did vs. Abreu. Given Chamberlain's history of throwing over and behind Red Sox (Youkilis), it could be construed that he should receive a longer suspension than Beckett. Let's see if Mr. Watson demonstrates his impartiality once again.

  1. It's too bad Joba doesn't get a chance to bat because I'm sure the first person in line to pitch would be Youk.

  1. Farrell is so full of crap it isn't funny. He's not saying anything that any half-arsed fan can't plainly see. The question is, what is he going to do about it? Oh yeah, and he might spend some time working with the pitchers in holding runners on first base. Sox pitchers, by far, are the worst in baseball with that. Tek doesn't have a prayer of throwing anyone out.

  1. MLB is a farce. Bud Selig is a feckless tool of the owners and he's been complicit in every last stain that marks baseball: from steroids to collusion to Bob Watson making the commissioner's office an extension of the Yankees.

There's no way Watson will ever mete out justice evenly. And punks like Joba know it. MLB is a farce. They'll let Tito get pneumonia before they give the Red Sox a break, even on stupid uniform issues.

Let's face it. As far as they can work it, the fix is in...

  1. I'm tired of the bean-ball wars. Let's be the bigger team and let it be. The Yankees/fans are poor losers. Girardi is a jerk, Joba is a mental case, A-Roid is a psycho, let's just win and quietly gloat about it and not sink to their level. Just tell Bay, Youk and Peddie to be ready to duck and swing for the fences the rest of the time. All that matters is the Red Sox win. Go Sox!

(Listening to WFAN radio now and it's funny how they have Red Sox envy... it's must listen to radio)

  1. Could the discipline coming fom MLB offices be any more biased or uneven???

Bob Watson (Ex Yankee Executive) has no trouble suspending Beckett but continues to let that goof Joba Chamberlain hit guys at will..

Yankees players aren't stupid, they know that someone is going to get drilled...Sox have 13 more games to do it....

  1. Chamberlain is a punk. I'd like to see Lucic drop him. Nice to hear Farrell say those things aren't forgotten.

  1. I think the MLB as a whole should be looking at Joba. Every time he plays the SOX he hits someone. Usually it is YOUK but since he was out last night he chose the guy who hit the home run.

I think he is a dirty player that looks to hit guys who wear a Red Sox uniform and if it was not obvious last night that he threw at Bay then I am not sure what is.

    PUNK!

  1. Revenge served cold is best!! Too bad the mental midget doesn't get to swing the bat..

  1. Here's what I'd like to see the next time we face Joba:

    1. Molina catches and Posada (when back from the DL) is DH.
    2. Somebody (Papi?) runs over Molina in a play at the plate and knocks him out.
    3. Posada has to catch, and therefore Joba has to bat.
    4. Beckett or Penny or anyone other than Wakefield plunks the F-ing punk.

If that doesn't happen, I'll settle for an 18-0 record against the Yanks this year! :-)

  1. Maybe Pedroia can re-enact his "Dustin vs. Goliath" commercial and "Matt Clement" Joba!

Posted by ZYX May 6, 09 03:20 PM
  1. The Sox don't really care about keeping runners close. They are tought to focus on the batter and the next pitch and not be distracted by the baserunner.

  1. Every time I get upset about Joba, I remind myself that Pedro was exactly the same.
I watched the game on the YES network and it was hysterical to hear the Yankees announcers claim "that one just got away from Joba. I'm sure there was no intention there"
That combined with them asking each other, "why do you think that 9 of the 12 strikeouts were looking?" answered by "he just has incredible stuff tonight" No mention of the ludicrously large strikezone.

  1. Bottom line, as Farrell says, this is not forgotten and Beckett will probably drill Jeter next time they meet up. The real question is whether that collection of ballplayers in NY is a "TEAM". If you were out there on the field all the time watching that fat slob Joba plunk guys for no reason knowing it was going to be your or another one of your teammates and not Joba having to answer for it later on, that's not going to make you happy. Will they all have Joba's back on this one? I think they have no choice and have to act like they do even though in the clubhouse, they're not thrilled about this. And that does NOT make for a good "TEAM." Girardi is a horrendous coach. That franchise is nothing more than a high payroll with nothing to show for it.

  1. Joba hit Bay because Youk wasn't in the game!

Posted by chris May 6, 09 03:31 PM
  1. To be honest, I'm surprised that more batters don't retaliate by trying to hit a pitch squarely back up the middle- and at the pitcher.

Hitters are taught that that's the best way to get a base hit. It's probably also the best way to keep pitchers in check. If hitters want to stop getting drilled, they'll flip the script and start doing some drilling of their own. A couple of line shots that whistle past the pitchers head will send a very loud message.

    Two can play that game.

  1. Joba's mom got plucked this week for selling meth. maybe we should just back off the poor kid -- I'm sure he's got a lot on his mind. AH! Gotcha! His mom's a meth dealing loser and he's a dufus!!! He'll get his later this year. In the mean time -- how sweeeet it is!!

  1. Jason Bay is my idea of what a professional is. Unfortunately, he was in a game with an unprofessional pitcher. jason, i hope your back is ok as that looked like it really hurt. You even looked out at him with professionalism that seemed to show disappointment in him. Very very classy. Thanks for playing hard for the Sox.

Posted by ron May 6, 09 03:55 PM
  1. I love how he refuses to even say Joba's name "the pitcher in New York "

    classic!

  1. If pitchers can hit batters at will, then batters should be able to take two steps and helicoptor the bat in return. That would stop this nonsense, and fast.

  1. Well, there's always the drag bunt along the first base line. "I spiked your hand as you reached for the ball, Joba? Dear me, I'm so sorry...."

Posted by zoot May 6, 09 04:20 PM
  1. Joba can't control it. Sometimes the meth he ingested while still in the womb makes a rare appearance.

That's not to say I wouldn't mind seeing Damon's brains splattered on home plate from a Papelbon fastball in retaliation for Bay's HBP. Oh wait, never mind, Damon doesn't have any brains.

Posted by Yankees are Cheaters May 6, 09 04:20 PM
  1. Lets all give Joba a break. He is probably all worked up about his mommy getting busted for meth.

Posted by CorkyPig May 6, 09 04:25 PM
  1. Sox fans have a very short memory. It was less than 10 years ago when Pedro the punk was consistently throwing up and in at Jeter & Co (which inspired the Zimmer incident). The Yankees and their fans complained all the time about the unfair ratio of hit batsmen compared to their Sox counterpart. As a matter of fact Mike Mussina was singled out by the NY press for never retaliating. Typical provincial Bostonians, always looking thru tinted glasses.

Posted by Max May 6, 09 04:29 PM
  1. Um, didn't Pedro used to routinely hit Jeter several times each season? Hate to say it, but what goes around comes around.

Posted by LM May 6, 09 04:44 PM
  1. Bay should fling his bat at him on the first pitch the next time he faces him (oops, forgot to tar my bat). Unfortunately Jay Bay is to even headed to do that. So maybe Lugo should take care of it for him. If baseball will not police it, the Sox should.

I don't advocate violence, but this guy needs to get his clock cleaned and shape up.

Posted by Dave May 6, 09 04:57 PM
  1. Chamberlains mother is a crack whore. They way he bounced around last night, I think he was on crack too. The MLB should drug test him immediately. Joba is a punk and now we know he got it from his drug addict mom.

  1. Boo-hoo. Poor red sox getting hit. Play the game like everyone else and quit whining

  1. It's times like these one wishes we were in the National League (where head cases like Jobba the Hitt have to come to the plate).

Posted by globularities May 6, 09 05:10 PM
  1. We (Red Sox) need to come to an accord with one of the National League teams the Yankees will play in the National league Park when Jaba will have to come to the plate. And I think it was right not to hit anyone back last night. Damon and Jeter both knew they were targets and for the rest of the season every Yankee batter who comes up will be waiting for the retribution that they know is due. I think Jaba did it on his own and his teammates are going to be very uncomfortable all year long because of it. Our time will come.

  1. Too bad he didnt get more of his fathers genes. Bad attitude, butt ugly, alcohol addiction, DUI. Like Mother like Son. How long till he starts the meth? Too many internal demons. He will self destruct and ruin his MLB career.

  1. Joba is loser criminal just like his mother. Fenway fans should pull no punches and tell him that next time he comes here

Posted by apeydubya May 6, 09 05:55 PM
  1. 1. Josh Beckett threw at Abreu's head, and then lost it...sorry Sweet Basil, but no comparison

    2. These reader comments remind me of the New York readers responding to Pedro when he was on the Red Sox. Ah, yes, remember....?!

Posted by pinstrip reality May 6, 09 06:02 PM
  1. If you remember...Pedroia was talking to some writer (MLB - ESPN - NESN) and he was asked about the WBC and the match up (what if) between USA and Japan. When asked how he would approach hitting Dice-K, he said something like "Right off his back, I'm going to drill it right off his back". I can only hope, and I truley mean this; that the sox can deliver some extremely hard comebackers right at the Yankee pitching starters (their pen is bad enough). it would make my heart full of joy to see Youk hit a come backer right off fat boys ribs and send him to the DL for a few months with cracked ribs. Who cares about hitting some solid muscle position player, they are used to it. I want to see Jaba just get drilled. I want to see him on the mound at Fenway crying like the fat TPT poor excuse of a professional pitcher he is. How often does a pro player's own mother get arrested for selling speed to the cops? Can't fix stupid, but we can drill them in the ribs!!!

  1. After reading about Joba's Mom, and her meth and crack problems, I actually have some sympathy for the guy. It helps explain why he's throwing at guys in every start, and maybe with some therapy and prayers he can get control of himself before someone drills Jeter in the ear.

Joba just slipped get over it you pussy red sux fans. You are a bunch of friggin cry babies when someone hits one of your precious players. Oh my Jason got hit. Who cares, he won't be there next year anyhow. Nice job by Pavano on ur ass.

  1. To the New York morons who keep bringing Pedro up as justification for Joba being a head-case: you make no sense. Pedro, Clemens, and Beckett (and every other Sox player, and most non-Yankee's) get suspended and tossed for crossing the line. If a Sox player yelled at umps and opponents as much as Joba does, or hit every batter who hits him hard, they would certainly get penalized. (Beckett got a BS suspension for NOT hitting a batter on the late time-out call!) Joba has all of the physical signs of steroid-HGH use, as well as exhibiting violent, erratic, and imbalanced behavior. At minimum it is well known that he uses massive doses of legal stimulants, if he is not using anything stronger like the crystal meth his mommy sells. Oh, I forgot... the Yankees need MLB to help them sell their overpriced seats made of endangered rain forest hardwood that the TAXPAYERS paid for... Shame on MLB if they wait until Joba kills someone or has a stroke on the mound while screaming at the umpires with impunity.
PS: Joba, you got the most generous strike zone in the history of baseball last night and you still got beat, punk... so quit whining about called strikes because if they called your game as tight as everyone else you'd be an even bigger bum than you already are. Go back to whatever crank-riddled, illiterate, racist cesspool you crawled out of and bail-out yer mom because her customers are waiting.

What more would you like and expect Farrell to say? If Farrell comes right out and says what you'd like him to say, he, Francona and the Red Sox will be fined. Furthermore, they'd lose the opportunity to handle this in their own way. Farrell's being smart about this, I suggest you might want to be also.
