Ill Remy flies home

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff May 1, 2009 06:03 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Beloved NESN announcer Jerry Remy will miss at least the remainder of this road trip with an illness, the symptoms of which are the same as those that kept him sidelined for the outset of spring training. Remy will fly home to Boston from Tampa tomorrow and might return for Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park. Best wishes to Remy from us.

Buck Martinez will fill in for Remy tonight, as he did for last night's 13-0 Red Sox loss to the Rays. Martinez usually works for TBS and MASN, the local broadcasting channel for the Baltimore Orioles.

  1. We all hope you feel better Jerry! Buck is good but he is no Rem-Dawg! We missed you last night and await your return. Get well soon!

  1. Wishing the Red-Dog a speedy recovery. He's an AWFUL announcer and a shameless self-promoter, but I hope he's better soon. Expect the inane banter and obnoxious laughter to drop 85% with him gone.

  1. I live down in FL and the Rays make me sick too as I am forced to watch the "local" broadcast during these games. It's like being beaten with toilet brush. It doesn't really hurt but you feel all dirty and soiled afterword. Get well Jerry.

  1. I hope you get better Jerry soon, I kind of think you are necessary to keep things in perspective. Like the humor of Van Every pitching would have been evident instead of desperate.

  1. *Almost* agree with Mike D. above.... Remy is actually a very good baseball analyst when he sticks to the game... it's the shameless self-promotion and inane banter that has me keeping the TiVO remote in my hand at all times.

In any event, I certainly wish him good health and a speedy recovery. Buck Martinez' voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I'll take the 70% of Remy I like over that.

  1. OK...I would like to go on record as saying that I'm worried about Jerry! OMG I hope that he doesn't have cancer!

  1. It must be nice for all you baseball "experts" who probably have never even played the game, to sit at your computers and criticize the man while he's ill. Gutless cowards. Play the game first, become an analyst, then maybe we'll care about what you say.

  1. Here's wishing Jerry Remy a speedy recovery. I have MLB TV over the Internet, and freaquently watch the NESN feed. However, Buck Martinez is a very good analyst, including working for ESPN during the 1990s, and I'm sure he'll do a fine job in the RemDog's abscence.

    Get well soon Rem-dawg!

  1. OMG. You MORONS complaining about Remy. He is the best freakin analyst in the game. SO WHAT if he promots himself. AND, it is FUNNY when he and Orsillo crack up and provide "inane banter." LIGHTEN UP.

All that being said, I hope Remy is o.k. This is quite worrisome.

Sending you the best, Remdawg!! Get well soon.

The rest of you folks ----stuff it!!!

Its almost distressing to listen to a sox game without him. Jerry, we are all wishing you good health and a speedy recovery! The broadcast isn't the same without you.

  1. First thing I did last night when I heard someone else calling the game was to check in everywhere I could to find out whassup with Jerry. Did Wally fly home with the Rem-Dawg? I feel this is a bad omen for Red Sox Nation.

Posted by KatesNonna May 1, 09 09:20 PM
  1. You people cirticizing Rem Dawg's self-promotions are idiots! Do you really think NESN (a station owned by the Red Sox) would allow Jerry to promote his private business on their network?? The stuff Jerry sells has the Red Sox logos all over it. I would guess that much of the money made from sales goes to The Red Sox Foundation.

I too am stuck in H--- watching the Rays coverage of the game. Get well soon, Jerry! We miss you terribly!

  1. I'm a little worried: the illness last month, now again; I am the only who thinks that recent booth shots of Jerry, he is looking awfully thin? Hopes and prayers may be in order, especially when you hear he's 'under the weather'. Belichek gives out more health info than that.

  1. Good riddance. Maybe now they'll actually talk about the game instead of Remy's side-projects "RemDawg night at RemDawgs! Check it out on Remdawg.com. The RemDawg girls will be there" etc...etc..

    That said, get well soon.

  1. I live in CA and watch ALL the announcing teams on the MLB package. Remy and Orsillo are in the bottom 1/3 of all National broadcast teams. Watch some of the other guys and then tell me that Remy is good. All you fools are force-fed Remy, so you have nothing to compare it to. He's brutal.

    Posted by CP4 May 1, 09 10:25 PM

I love cali, but there's something missing there that we have in boston: heart, soul and personality. Your state is very bland.

I'll take that, and real people over a nice beach and sun all year round.

    get well soon remy!!!

  1. Innane banter? C'mon, listen to the Sunday night telecast on espn with Joe Morgan speaking out of an orafice other than his mough to hear a terrible broadcast. You morons don't know what you have.

It's a game, and Remy has fun with it. In a game decided early, it's a good thing. I still have the pizza throwing incident Tivoed. One of the best live moments I've ever seen on TV. Good for him for having fun and enjoying his job, and get well.

  1. The Red Sox have simply one of the the worst broadcast in baseball. Those who have MLB Exra innings can watch a good broadcast team for the Giants, Dodgers or Orioles. Palmer is the best analyst in baseball.

I love the Sox but watch with the sound off.

I hope Mr. Remy recovers fully and enjoys an early retirement.

  1. Much love for the RemDawg, and best wishes for a speedy recovery. However, his is not the voice of the Red Sox. That belongs to Joe Castiglione, thank you very much.

And, with all due respect, Mr. Buck Martinez, it's David Or-TIZ. Not OR-tiz. Pissed me off in the playoffs last year. Still does. But thanks for filling in.

Posted by Dan Bolles May 2, 09 12:55 AM
  1. I watch the RedSox games on NESN but mute out the sound. I listen to Joe Castiglione and Dave O'Brien broadcast the games which makes Red Sox games much more enjoyable than listening to Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy. I have listened to the RedSox games with Buck Martinez and Don Orsillo which have been much enjoyable without Jerry Remy. I never wish anyone to get sick but maybe it is time to put someone else in the TV booth with Don Orsillo.

Posted by Nelson from Greenville ,N.C. May 2, 09 03:35 AM
  1. I certainly do hope that Jerry Remy will be healthy soon and I do recognize that Sox fans could do worse--some of those who did fill in for him during Spring training were even worse than he is.

But it was refreshing to hear Buck Martinez and his contributions/analysis. We could clearly do much, much better than Remy.

And, too, it's refreshing that NESN didn't waste all different kinds of time showing fans seeking attention by touting Remy with their signs. That stuff is simply juvenile. Who really cares that it's someone's birthday or their first visit to Fenway?

Posted by wnyfan May 2, 09 05:33 AM
  1. I wish Buck was taking over for Orsillo.....the most ANNOYING announcer ever!.....TOO MANY STATISTICS,NEVER SHUTS UP,SAYS THE SAME THING TWICE IN THE SAME STATEMENT/SENTENCE.........TELLS US THINGS THAT WE ALREADY KNOW........Dave O'Brien is 100 times BETTER!

  1. Nice to know there are a few others forced to watch the Sox on local Tampa feed. Misery loves company. Dwayne Staats and now Kevin Kenned, gag.

Staats has a long broadcast history which is a mystery. Only the lowly Devil Rays would hire such a looser. Once you've heard Staats you become even a bigger Don and Remy fan. The toilet brush comment in much earlier posting is a classic painting.

    Get well soon Jerry!

Because these 2 are hugely tiresome... Someone who isn't cheezy enough to sell scorecards on air. As far as Don, has he ever had an original thought or insight beyond Jerrys? Sorry all the games are too long for you guys! Must be tough having the easiest and best job in the world. Radio is 100Xs better just wish it wasn't delayed so I could mute the TV. Should he have to resign or be replaced for health reasons, will there be another election? I don't think the Nation can take a period of rudderless life for very long.

It's fine if you don't care for his comments and/or commentary; everyone is entitled to their own opinion of Remy's broadcasting, but a comment like "No loss" is just rude and in poor taste and has no place here! He's a knowledgable broadcaster and I for one will miss him over the next few games. Jerry, I hope you're illness is not serious and you're up and running in no time! Best of health to you; and I personally love the inane banter and uncontrollable laughter (at times!!)

My family has the direct tv baseball package so we get to watch all of the red sox games, and up until last year, some of them were broadcast from the other team's local station (ex. some of the yankees games would be on YES, lots of games on local FSN stations) instead of nesn. so i've heard lots of different analysts and they all suck compared to rem dawg, seriously. so quit your bitching because you have no idea what you're talking about!!!! get well soon remy!!!

  1. To the poster "eric" you sir are a pathetic excuse for a human being. If you never looked back what the h*ll are you doing on this website? Glad you moved to away now if you can only find yourself a life. To the Remdawg: Get better soon! The games are not the same without you. More importantly though I wish you a speedy recovery.

  1. I live in CA, so I watch all the games on MLB Extra Innings. I have been doing this for 4-5 years, and I can honestly say that Remy is one of the worst announcers in the league. You folks in Boston have nothing to compare Remy to, so how can you provide any insight?? He's awful, and NESN's coverage is also terrible. I watch the other team's feed as often as I can. Remy has become totally unbearable.

Posted by swinmmingwsharks May 2, 09 03:25 PM
  1. The NESN broadcast is terrible, but it's not all Remy's fault. Sure...he can't speak English and he seldom focuses on the game, but at least he played baseball at some point.

Posted by judgedredd May 2, 09 03:30 PM
  1. Jerry Remy= mediocre player & mediocre announcer. Nobody overrates their own quite like Bostonians.

    Posted by R.S. May 2, 09 03:49 PM
  1. We are out of town and have to watch on Extra Innings. You guys in NE who have NESN have no idea how good you have it with Orsillo and Remy. They are far superior baseball knowledge-wise to most of the broadcast teams elsewhere and always funnier and more entertaining! Martinez's alternate color guys for the Orioles can't even pronounce players' names correctly. They repeatedly say Pedrosia and Papelbomb!
    Get well soon, Jerry!

  1. I'd like to give Buck a shout out. His comments are good and right on the money. And unlike Jerry, who seems easily distracted and gets off track a lot, he keeps focused on the game and players.

Get well SOON Jerry. I hope everything is OK. Don, you're doing a great job but I am sure you miss your side kick. I need the team back!

You guys are great, and you are missed. Hope you get well soon!!

NESN most days, but also Fox on Saturdays, ESPN on Sunday nights, the Mets on SNY, even the Yankees on Yes when nobody else is on. Watching that much baseball, my wife and I love the fact that Don and Remdawg are so entertaining. Most other announcers come across as a bunch of stiffs. 1. Get well Remy!!!!!

SELF PROMOTION??? give me a break people What are you idiots talking about Remy is a Mr. Red Sox and makes being a Red Sox fan and watching the games more enjoyable. He is a valuable resource and if he was overboard with self promotion I am sure the sox would do something about it. How could you people be bothered by a man like Jerry Remy the thing you jokers don't realize is that the sox get their cut of Remy's success as well so stop crying. I have found Sox broadcasts with Don and Jerry to be both knowledgeable and fun albeit maybe a bit over the edge sometimes with the jokes but my goodness I just don't get how people have to be so serious about everything. enjoy life have fun thats what sports are all about having fun the jokes and the mascots make it more interesting for kids and adults as well. I am a die hard baseball fan but. I would not want an encyclopedic broadcast of the game I think that would be so boring. By the way whats wrong with self promoting anyways? Self promoting, taking initiative advancing oneself as well as promoting the franchise being successful all good lessons for the people of our country especially our children growing up.

No offense to those filling in for you or Joe Castiglione, but, nothing compares to the electricity the two of you create. You are a professional and I miss you. I had the pleasure of meeting you prior to one game two years ago at Yawkey Way, and you asked if I would mind if you got back to me after you took care of a special needs fan. We do not need stats to fill airtime, it is like when you are with good friends or loved ones, it is OK to have silence. I can not watch TBS or ESPN or OMG BUCKINMCCARVER!! 1. Anybody who complains about RemDawg and Orsillo must have their heads in a very uncomfortable place. Have you watched any of the Sox games on Fox or ESPN? Peanut-head (Buck) and the Moron (McCarver) know minimal about the Sox ("Masterson will close games before the end of the season if Papelbon gets hurt" (Um, what about Saito?)) and Joe Morgan is a bigger self-promoter than anybody ("Well when I played for the Big Red Machine in 1975, we played the Red Sox in the World Series and we beat them."). Remy and Orsillo are insightful and, at times, friggin' hilarious. Get well RemDawg.

  1. Please get better, it is hard to watch these games without you and as much as your fans miss you, Don must be going crazy without you. Jerry, we are worried about you and hope to hear your voice soon.

  1. Get well quickly, Jerry! We miss you! You are far superior to the Sunday night commentators. Now there is inane bantor. I feel like I could throw up listening to those guys! With Jerry and Don, I not only get to hear a well broadcast game, but it's hilarious as well! Just not the same without the Remdawg! Go Sox and Go Jerry!

Posted by Martha May 3, 09 05:12 PM
  1. Hoping Jerry recovers speedily. Now, he might be a nice guy, but he is a TERRIBLE announcer. He was a mediocre ball player at best, and a 3rd rate announcer at best. We don't care about your idiotic RemDawg nonsense.

Posted by CloudyDaze May 3, 09 05:17 PM
  1. I Can't watch Fox (Buck sucks) and ESPN is totally out of tune with the local stuff, so I only really like watching NESN. And now I lost half of the only decent Sox two-some. I can't imagine the powder blue suit going solo and I really miss when you call Clay (Buckhouze) ((nice Italian flair!!)) Hope you return to the booth soon..

Posted by Ed May 3, 09 08:30 PM
  1. Momma and I are inm our late 80's and she is heartsick that the Remdawg is not there to banter with Don.
The games don't sound the same without you Jerry.....get well fast!

  1. Missing ya, Remdog! Glad it's only an illness and not some other malarkey: the least Don could have done is make mention of it once or twice during any of this weekend's games. So what if Jerry isn't a polished gem in the booth? Give me Remdog over suffering with the bloviating Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver any day of the week. Come back to the booth, soon, Jerry! The Nation needs you!

  1. Jerry!!!!!! OH JERRY!!!!! You are the best around and the broadcasts aren't the same w/o you. Miss the giggles and laughter with you and Don. I am a MLB.tv subscriber from Ohio and have watched every SOX game since 2004!!! You are greatly missed and I know Don wants you back too! Take care and get back to us soon.

Posted by RSNationinSC May 4, 09 11:41 AM
  1. Jerry, please make a speedy recovery. You are missed by the REAL fans, like me.

As for you others who have chosen to malign Jerry, especially posting to an article which says the man is ill, SHAME ON YOU. You are the type of "fan" that gives RSN a bad name. So Jerry plugs his own ventures, so what? It's part of his charm in that he readily admits they are shameless plugs. And, like YOU wouldn't be doing the same thing if you were in his chair.

  1. Get well quick! Surprised at some of the comments here. I look forward to your broadcast, and welcome the occasional "deviation" from the game. Your wit and humor brighten my mood and I'd much rather that, than all the disecting and over analyzing some do.

Posted by Bob May 4, 09 06:57 PM
  1. Get better quick, Jerry. You are missed by the REAL fans!

To those who chose to malign Jerry, especially after an article that he is sick, SHAME ON YOU ! You are the type of "fans" that give RSN a bad name. If you don't like the broadcast, turn down the volume or turn the channel. Personally I think his admittedly (by him & me) shameless plugs are part of his charm and don't tell me that YOU wouldn't do it either if you were in his position.

Remdawg, the broadcast is not the same without you. I saw Don announcing a game the other day by himself and it just seemed so awkward for him and it was hard to listen to. Don misses you, and all of Red Sox nation misses you. I wish you well and I'm sure all real Sox fans do too. Get well soon, Jerry!

Remy is colorful. Remy is knowledgeable. Remy is personable. Remy is an original. And please God, may he get well soon.

What the hell are you talking about you dumb moron. He is not an awful announcer. If you wanna talk about awful announcers watch a game on the YES network then you'll know what an awful announcer is. Michael Gay is a waste of money for the yankees and is self centered when it comes to baseball announcing.I dont care who you are when someone is sick dont come dissing them on there message board.
