The Red Sox are without Kevin Youkilis for the fifth straight game, which would suggest a trip to the disabled might be imminent. Not so, Terry Francona said. The Red Sox are confident Youkilis will rest tomorrow and Monday, a day off, and be able to begin playing again Tuesday in Anaheim.

J.D. Drew is also out today, and not only because lefthanded Scott Kazmir is on the mound. Drew has some sore legs, and the quadriceps ailment that sidelined him last week has been "barking at him," Francona said. Drew's legs have been bothering him for a bit, but the recent lack of depth forced the Red Sox to keep him until today. "We had kind of had that planned all along," Francona said. "Just trying to use common sense. Certainly like having good hitters in the lineup, but once you make a mistake, you can't go back."

In Youkilis's absence, the Red Sox have also dealt with a slew of other nagging injuries. On one night, they had a two-man bench of Julio Lugo and George Kottaras. Francoan rarely makes pinch hit and pinch run moves, so that wasn't an issue.

"It makes you a little hesitant or nervous," Francona said. "If something happens during a game, and all of a sudden you're putting someone where they don't belong, that gives you a little bit of anxiety."

It helped Francona to know Nick Green was available. Green can play all three outfield spots and every infield spot, including first base. (Without Youkilis out, Green is Jeff Bailey's backup.) And if there was a shortage of outfielders, Francona said the emergency choice would be Javier Lopez, who played outfield in college at Virginia.

As for who is playing:

Red Sox
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Jason Bay, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. Rocco Baldelli, RF
7. Jeff Bailey, 1B
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Julio Lugo, SS

Rays
1. B.J. Upton, CF
2. Carl Crawford, LF
3. Evan Longoria, 3B
4. Carlos Pena, 1B
5. Pat Burrell, DH
6. Jason Bartlett, SS
7. Gabe Kapler, RF
8. Akinori Iwamura, 2B
9. Dioner Navarro, C

  1. So I assume the Red Sox are waiting for Mike Lowell's hip to fall off before forcing him to take a day.

  1. ESPN.com has a Poll that asks where the Yankees will finish now that A-Rod is back. 40% of nearly 20,000 New York voters (NY voters) say the Yanks will NOT make the playoffs. Gotta love it. Hey, they tore down the "House that Ruth Built". Don't blame us! The reverse curse is on!

  1. No way, Drew is out of the lineup? Who would have thought it?

No bang for that buck, that's for sure!

  1. Drew's legs must be sore from running all the way around the bases on his homer last night. Poor guy.

  1. Ready to get it on! We don't get too many Sox games on the tube down here so today's Fox and tomorrow on TBS is relished. After that no more tv games until the 23rd against the Mets. No tv games for 2 weeks! I gave up on all other sports to concentrate on Sox. I'm actually rooting against the Bruins and Celts. just so the New England sports talk shows will talk more Sox!! How sad is that? I'll put up with Buck and Tim.The only announcer worse than Sutcliffe is Boomer Wells.

  1. Lugo doesn't get close to a ground ball that a good SS would get, Lester doesn't get to the bunt on play that needs to be made; the flood gates open up after that.
    Defense wins baseball games.

By the way is just me or does Lester just look like he is in slow motion out there?

  1. Polls, I have a poll for you. If you continue to believe poll I got a pole for you to smoke. I think you best concentrate on the Rays. Season is LONG. How many HR for Papi ? Can you say the next name to come out. Oh, 150.

  1. Jharrin -- Lester might not made the play as quickly as you wished...but he made it.
Bailey was the one who blew the play by standing like a manequin at 1B and not going out to get the ball. He was flat-footed...left foot on the bag, right foot on a direct line between 1B and 2B. His right should have beem planted in the direction of the throw. He gets the ball 5' sooner & the play's not even close. Those things are how big innings start. Just 'cuz pretty boy McCarver was so busy yapping he didn't call it right doesn't change the fact that Bailey needs some footwork lessons around the bag badly...Watch the play again if you can and see if you have the same opinion.

  1. Hey Southern Sox, get MLB Extra Innings if you want to catch the Bosox more than once every few weeks. The $199 is well worh the price of a full season.

    Go Sox
