Remy: 'Hopefully it'll be a short time'
Jerry Remy, the popular Red Sox television commentator and former second baseman, is absent for his fourth straight game today after returning home with an illness before the start of the club's series in Tampa Bay.
Naturally, there's been much concern among the fandom regarding Remy's condition and the extent of his ailment, particularly since the same symptoms kept him away from the beginning of spring training.
Remy addressed his status to a degree this afternoon with a series of updates on his Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/Jerry_Remy.
Hi everyone [it's] Jerry. Thx for . . . your concern. In February, I had a case of pneumonia and a bad infection followed . . .I went off to Spring Training without ever having a chance to completely recuperate. I am paying the price now . . .
I've decided to take some time off to fully recover. Hopefully it'll be a short time. I miss doing the games! Thanks again, Jerry.
Almost forgot . . . Go Sox. Jerry.
Remy did not indicate how long he expects to be away from the broadcast booth. Earlier reports were that he might return for Wednesday's game against the Indians at Fenway Park, but that remains uncertain.
Remy's Twitter status is often updated by his friend and business partner, John O'Rourke, but O'Rourke wrote last night that Remy himself would check in today.

Get well soon, Jerry! In the meantime, I say give Lou Merloni a shot to do some color commentary with Don.
Jerry ,hope you feel better..Get well soon..Im a yankee fan but watched you play
God Bless you
Jackie from Jersey
We miss you Jerry! Make sure you give yourself adequate time to recover. Looking forward to heariong your voice again.
Your Arizona Red Sox fans really miss you. Glad to know things are gradually getting better. They will win more games when you return!!
Jerry, Get well soon! It just isn't the same without you. Miss you sense of humor in addition to your baseball knowledge.
Hope you are back "in the game" soon.
Get well Jerry We all miss you.
get well soon, remdog. we all miss you!
Jerry, Get well soon! The Red Soxes games are missing our President! Yes Jerry Remy! Get healthy! Kim from Vermont!
re: O'sMagic... Merloni is on the "rival" television network now, don't bet on that.
Get well soon, Remy. Take all the time you need away from the team though, I've been enjoying Buck Martinez.
Rem Dog! The broadcast booth is falling apart without you. GET WELL SOON!
Red Sox Nation needs you healthy!
Hi there -- miss your pleasant voice and game analysis-- hope you recover real soon!
Great article in last weeks Boston Globe Sunday magazine too!
Way back when --- your wife Phoebe [Philomena Brum] worked for me @ the
Zayre's Department Store [remember that?] in Fall River --- she was a clerk in the Domestics Department --I was the Assistant Store Manager -- the Manager was Mr Spellman ~~~ and I do recall then that she said she dating a baseball player from Somerset High School --- WOW -- what a small world !
Anyhow, get well quick!
Get well Jerry!
Hope you're feeling better soon! We all miss you. The games just aren't the same without you!
Hope you're feeling better soon! We all miss you. The games just aren't the same without you!
Jerry, get well fast. The game is not nearly as good without your comments. I have been following you since you played, and specifically since my son attended your "All American Baseball Camp". We go back some.
Jerry, please get well...I am out in LA on a project for another month and its BAD ENOUGH I have to watch the games online, but you not being there is BRUTAL...you add so much FUN to the game especially when you and DON start your laugh attacks..
Get well soon...take care and come back strong.
Jerry, I REALLY miss hearing you during the games. Nobody does it as well as you! The games just aren't as enjoyable without you. I hope you are completely recovered soon.
Jerry, I can't even watch the game without your comments. Your hurmor and expertise make the game come alive for me. But... don't come back until you are really better.
Best Wishes, Cyndy in Haverhill

get well soon, Jerry, we all miss you
Your Connecticut fans miss the way you brighten up the broadcast booth.
Get well soon.
Get well soon the sox aren't doing as well without their 11th player!!! Miss the jousting with you and fellow RI'der Don!
lose the cigarettes!!!!
GET WELL for the LONG TERM!
it's not the same without you get well soon.
I live out of state and I haven't been able to get the NESN feeds for the weekend's Sox-TB series as I've only seen coverage the Rays network. Who has been filling in for Jerry this weekend?
get well soon --love listening to you - game just is not the same without you keeping Don in line!
Don't watch a lot of baseball but who ever that is doing the Tampa series with Don stinks.
Miss you, RemDawg. Get better.
Jerry,
Don is doing a great job but I didn't realize just how much you add to the telecast. All the little stories and tid bit are missing. The fun that we feel you have during the game is missing. It just isn't the same wothout you. I hope you get well soon
Hey Jerry!! Watching games is not the same without you! I buy the MLB Extra Innings package every summer just to get my Red Sox games and follow you and Don in the booth! Get well soon Man!!!!
Get well soon Jerry. Hopefully, real soon you will be back in the booth doing your outstanding color commentary and "acourse", playing the "Air Guitar".
Get back soon....I'll buy you a RemDawg!
Miss you, Jerry!! Don is doing a great job but It's not the same without you! Get well soon!
Jerry will recover okay - thankfully he has the revenues of the many ways he has licensed his name for bars -- he may not be on TV but the registers still keep ticking away!
Better cut down on the smokes Jerry.
Get Well Jerry, does this mean the VP of Red Sox Nation is going to have to take your place till you get back?
Jerry , my dad and I were wondering where you were!. I told my dad , a Red Sox fan that I would Google search and find out. I , a die-hard Yankee fan see more Red Sox games and both my dad and I do miss you. Especially, you and Dennis Eckersley's unbiased take on the game which is rare these days. Wishing you a speedy and healthy recovery.
The Nation's behind you Jerry, take the time you need! You need to be 100% in October, after all....
Dear Jerry,
You are wise to take the time to fully recover, so be sure to give yourself enough time to do that. It sure is different not having you in the booth with Orsillo but he can patch the on-air things together until you get back. It's the team I'm worried about; down 3 out of 4 since you've been out! Maybe some rain in NYC will help us all out and give you even more time to feel yourself again. Whatever, take care of yourself; the rest of us will have to do the same.
TAKE YOUR TIME JERRY..WE NEED YOU AND MISS YOU BUT DO THE RIGHT THING..
Get Well Soon!
Not the same without you!
Rem Dog! Please take care of yourself. If you had taken time off earlier, maybe this wouldn't have happened. My husband and I miss you. You and Don are a great team; always entertaining and down-to-earth. When you laugh, I can't help laughing too. Sometimes till I cry. And then there was the time when you did the air guitar thing and fell trying to do the Keith Richards move. :)
So rest up and we'll see ya soon!
Jerry, get rest.... we need you for the PLAYOFFS!!!!
Lets hire Buck Martinez to replace Remy. This way we get value added baseball talk and just not someone who can read commercials
Don's great but he can't keep talking to himself like this.
Get well Jerry! We'll look forward to hearing you again soon - Mom and I love you and Don!
Jerry,
Mary & Dave haven't laughed once - since you have been out of the lineup. We need your dry humor. This last series with the Rays could have been at least a little bit lighter with you in the booth. Don is doing a great job - but we don't know how long he can hold on without you. Hey! too much time out and he'll run for President of Red Sox Nation. Hope you feel better soon!
I can't wait until Jerry comes back but my vote goes to Heidi to be in the booth with Don while Jerry is out.
Not only will she be pleasant to look at (which of course the camera will have to be more focused on the booth) but it will be funny to see how much Don loses his cool next to such a beautiful woman,
Jerry, Smoking is going to kill you at an early age!
Smokers get pneumonia in far greater numbers than the rest of the population.
Although I wish you better health, I'm enjoying your absence. Wally and the Air Guitar are your best work, and that ain't saying much.

Nip it in the bud this time Jerry, it's a long season and we need you. I'm an out of market fan and the NESN Games are a blessing and a way to stay connected to my roots in New England. Get well soon!
Get well soon, RemDawg!
Tony Mazz was excellent. They should pair him up with Remy. Orsillo is such a homer.
Feel Better Soon, Jerry... we miss you !!!
go bruins
Honestly, the games are a little boring without you.
HURRY BACK REMDAG. WHEN A GAME SUCKS, IT'S STILL FUN WITH YOUR COMMENTS.
Dawggone it! Hope this dawg is back in the hunt before too long, bright-eyed and tail a'waggin'!
MIss you in PA on MLB Package
Get well soon
It's the swine flu. I just know it is. Just ask the criminaliens.
From Maine to Reno where I live now - it matters not - we need you back in the booth as soon as youre well Jerry .. The guys are doing their best but it is just not the same - NESN - Red Sox Fans and Nation all wish you well - and come back as soon as you are ... well ...
wow Rem, even Yankees fans are wishing you well. Imagine how Sox fans feel?
Get well soon, bud, but don't try to push it and come back too soon!
According to that article last week, Jerry HAD ALREADY quit smoking. What he's suffering from now, while undisclosed, was described more as coming back to work too soon.
Hey Jerry,
We really miss you up here in Maine. We love Don, and your fill-in analysts have been good, but nobody has your unique personality and sense of humor. It is just not the same without you. Knock off the cigarettes (one day at a time), rest up, and we pray you'll be back playing air guitar in no time.
looking forward to some more air guitar jerry get well soon!!
WE MISS YOU...
Take care and take the time you need.
Becky and Doug
Jerry, best wishes and many prayers for a full recovery.
Please quit smoking. Do not wait until it is too late.
Sincerely,
A CT fan
Get well soon Jerry! The games are not the same without you! As much as I love Don too, I had to mute the TV and put the radio broadcast on b/c it just sounds so wrong without your witty commentary!!!
Somehow Orsillo isn't as annoying without Jerry. Don't know why. Hope Jerry recovers soon.
rr
Get well Jerry! Not going to be the same w/out you for a Yankee series.
GO SOX
Get well Jerry!
I'm not sure that everyone else knows that you quit smoking, as was reported in the Globe Magazine article a few weeks back.
Anyway get well soon, can wait to hear your voice reporting Sox wins!
I miss the fun and yuks. Rest and relax and recover in the love. Take care, Jerry.
From the Nation's largest colony, Get well quick, Jerry!
Jerry, Get well soon. Listening to Don is BORING. You really light the place up.
Phoebe...you are probably feeling the brunt of this. Men never make good patients. You have my blessings, hon.
Hey Jerry
Hope youre feeling better soon. Really enjoy your personality in the booth. We need you back, noone can say Tamper ( Tampa ) like you can ! :)
Get well soon Jerry!
in response to John Henry #30:
Actually smokers get pneumonia more when they STOP smoking. as the cilia in the bronchus recover from the nicotine the become more sensitive to infection because of the mucus buildup. Jerry stopped smoking a little while ago and I'm not surprised that he has pneumonia again.
To Jerry: glad you quit smoking. this is tuff right now, but in the end you'll breathe better and you'll have less shortness of breath too. Miss you in the booth, but can bear it until you are truly ready... Laura, RN
Get well soon. I'm a Red Sox Kid Nation captain & got to meet you last year. I'm a huge fan. Get Well soon!
Kid Nation missed you
Take your time and get well. In the meantime, "Announcer Boy" will just have to earn his keep...for a change!
Feel better Jerry! the games arent the same without you :( You and Don always make me laugh! Take your time and recover properly, I know someone who had the same thing happen, it takes a while to come back from all that, but Remdawg can do it! Take care.
Get well Remdog
There is only one Jerry Remy and the Broadcasts are not the same without you.
We will wait patiently and hopefully for your healthy return.
We are praying for a quick and full recovery. You just cannot believe how much you are missed! Everyone is great and we love Don but you are THE piece of the fabulous puzzle.
We are thinking of you here in Rochester NY.
Barb & Tom Pingree
LET'S GO REMY, TA TA TATATA, LET'S GO REMY TA TA TATATA!!! GET WELL SOON! I MISS THE AIR GUITAR!!!!
We miss you Jerry. Can't wait for you to get back and get Don laughing again. I laugh right along with you.
Nancy in Maine
Another Yankee fan here, this one with respiratory challenges of his own. Wishing all best to Jerry, a great professional on the field and in the broadcast booth. Hang in there Jerry!
Greg H. in Vermont
Jerry, hurry back---but only after you are recovered!!
We miss you!!
(And ignore the 2-3 crazies on here that have nothing better to do but slam someone when they are down)
Go Sox!!!!
Jerry your Health and Family come first. We the fans miss you as do the Red Sox and their organization. We are selfish people and want you back ASAP. We have had you for what 30 years?? I hope to have you for 30 more but please take care of yourself and make every decision with your family in mind not your Red Sox Family. A loving NATION wants what is best for YOU SIR!!!
Remdawg,
Your on the 15 day DL so rest up,we want you back 100%. Im the interim, we should let Diaskue do the commentary alongside Don (without an interpreter). This will give you added incentive to get better.
We all love you Buddy.
Get well and get to the booth and maybe Ortiz can hit a homer!!!!! Too boring without your commentary, no offense Don.
Rem Dog, watched you as a player, love you as a commentator. Color commentating is personality, and you are entertaining during the low points in the game. Anyone can get charged up when a homer is hit or a key base is stolen, you keep me in the game even in the blow outs.... Speedy recovery, god speed....
John on the Cape
Get well soon Jerry, and I loved your baseball book.
Remy sucks. I hope he feels better, but his god awful commentary is the worst thing about Sox games.
Get Well RemDawg.
All the best. Don and I need you!!!
Go Sox in 2009!!!!
Rich Kelly
Remy and Dave O'Brien would make a good duo...........Orsillo is the most annoying announcer ever, with all of his endless statistics every game, all game long......he never shuts up!.....He tells us things that we already know, and continually repeats himself..........LISTEN TO HIM!
You are missed. Hope you feel better soon. Take care.
It's just not the same without you, Remdawg. Drink lots of fluids.
Take care and God Bless!
So glad it's "only" an upper respiratory infection. Miss your commentary, and your good affect on Don, who has been valiant without you. The best to you.
Get Better Jerry, You are missed!!
Um, geez, I'm Red Sox Nation too but why are people posting messages to Jerry here??? This is a Boston Globe story. Jerry doesn't work for the Globe. He might not even read this story. When you comment, you're commenting to the WRITER of the story, not the SUBJECT.
How about sending a message to Jerry's Twitter account, his house, his workplace?
Sometimes it's really easy to see why other cities' fans hate us so much. There's just a basic lack of intelligence at work here.....
Get well Jerry!! The games just aren't the same without you. Go Sox!!! (and Bruins, and Celtics) - Yup, we're living in a good neck of the woods.....
Get well soon, Mr. RemDawg!!! You are very much missed in RSN and RDN!!!
Jerry,
I live in California and have been a Sox fan for 50 years. I have satellite, and I watch all the broadcasters from all the teams. Believe me Don and you are the best in the business. Hurry back. God's speed with your recovery.
Jerry, we all miss you, but it's worth a short absence to have you back 100%. All the best for a speedy recovery.
Jerry take your time...we don't miss your shtick at all. We don't care about Wally, air guitars, restaurant info or any of the other stupid non-baseball stuff you constantly discuss. You actually bring Orsillo performance down to your level.
Buck Martinez was excellent in the few games I caught on TBS and his knowledge and game insight makes watching a pleasure. If we could have him permanently, that would be a major score. You were good for years, but your time was over long ago and your commentary destracts us from the game itself.
Take whatever time you need. Your replacements stink. But I'd rather get you better than lose you twice. So get better, come back. Go Sox!
I agree with Lew at #27:
Baseball talk should dominate the broadcast, not silly discussions about Wally, air guitar and RemDawg merchandise. Jerry and NESN need to listen to a real broadcaster like Buck Martinez who provides insightfulness, game strategies and pure baseball talk. Orsillo is actually much better when he doesn't get caught up in Remy's antics and I thought the two of them together were excellent. It's not all about you Jerry!
HI Jerry, Get well soon we all miss you each night when you are not in our living room with us. Your personality can not be replaced, we need you back.
Your freinds Tom,Sandy,Amanda, Melanie, Cory and Haylee.
Get well and stay out of that cold, damp New England weather. You should go to Fla and recover. At first I thought you were getting ready to play shortstop and replace Julio the albatross Lugo the bearer of losses and bad plays. Good luck!
The other half of baseball's comedy team needs you,Jerry. He's like a canoe without an oar. THINK yourself well!
Jerry, you are being missed, so take care and get well soon.
Don, keep it up doing great.
Can you say lung cancer?
Get Well Jerry! We miss you!
Mississippi Red Sox fan.
Sure miss you Remy, you make watching the dull games enjoyable!! Get better & stay better!!
Everyone seems to be a pro on the smoking issue.. I quit long ago and yes it is difficult but Jerry has already quit. so he will be fine , just rest and get well Jerry .. take your time.. we all want you back...Best wishes, Barb
Big Fan Remdawg!! Hurry back asap!
Watching the games aren't the same without you ;)
Get Well everyone misses you Games are not the same.Lyn
Miss you Remy especially your sense of humor-take it easy and get well
Get well soon Jerry! Don was really missing you yesterday, he kept setting things up and then nothing. Buck Martinez took until Saturday to loosen up a bit.
Get well soon, Remdawg!! Our whole family misses you terribly but want to you lay low until you feel REALLY fine. Stay off the cigs if you can.
I must be the only one who really enjoyed the games without Remy this weekend? It was nice to hear the announcers actually talk about the game for a change. Remy drags Orsillo down to a low level....you can really see that Orsillo is pretty good without Remy around.
You and Don are so much a part of what makes the Red Sox so important to all of Red Sox Nation. I realized this when I moved here to Florida 3 years ago. I got the MLB Extra Innings package but it is not as enjoyable unless they are using the NESN feed. You and Don give the game what none of the other guys can compete with, the baseball stats and player info is given in just the right doses so that it does not compete with the ation on the field.......and if its a slow moving game you two sure do make a great comedy team....(kind of like Frick & Frack). I look foward to seeing you back in the booth and feelin' good.
