Remy: 'Hopefully it'll be a short time'

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff May 3, 2009 02:24 PM

Jerry Remy, the popular Red Sox television commentator and former second baseman, is absent for his fourth straight game today after returning home with an illness before the start of the club's series in Tampa Bay.

Naturally, there's been much concern among the fandom regarding Remy's condition and the extent of his ailment, particularly since the same symptoms kept him away from the beginning of spring training.

Remy addressed his status to a degree this afternoon with a series of updates on his Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/Jerry_Remy.

Hi everyone [it's] Jerry. Thx for . . . your concern. In February, I had a case of pneumonia and a bad infection followed . . .

I went off to Spring Training without ever having a chance to completely recuperate. I am paying the price now . . .

I've decided to take some time off to fully recover. Hopefully it'll be a short time. I miss doing the games! Thanks again, Jerry.

Almost forgot . . . Go Sox. Jerry.

Remy did not indicate how long he expects to be away from the broadcast booth. Earlier reports were that he might return for Wednesday's game against the Indians at Fenway Park, but that remains uncertain.

Remy's Twitter status is often updated by his friend and business partner, John O'Rourke, but O'Rourke wrote last night that Remy himself would check in today.

I , a die-hard Yankee fan see more Red Sox games and both my dad and I do miss you. Especially, you and Dennis Eckersley's unbiased take on the game which is rare these days. Wishing you a speedy and healthy recovery.

  1. Dear Jerry,

You are wise to take the time to fully recover, so be sure to give yourself enough time to do that. It sure is different not having you in the booth with Orsillo but he can patch the on-air things together until you get back. It's the team I'm worried about; down 3 out of 4 since you've been out! Maybe some rain in NYC will help us all out and give you even more time to feel yourself again. Whatever, take care of yourself; the rest of us will have to do the same.

You and Don are a great team; always entertaining and down-to-earth. When you laugh, I can't help laughing too. Sometimes till I cry. And then there was the time when you did the air guitar thing and fell trying to do the Keith Richards move. :)
So rest up and we'll see ya soon!

  1. Jerry,

Mary & Dave haven't laughed once - since you have been out of the lineup. We need your dry humor. This last series with the Rays could have been at least a little bit lighter with you in the booth. Don is doing a great job - but we don't know how long he can hold on without you. Hey! too much time out and he'll run for President of Red Sox Nation. Hope you feel better soon!

Posted by Dave & Mary May 3, 09 06:26 PM
  1. I can't wait until Jerry comes back but my vote goes to Heidi to be in the booth with Don while Jerry is out.
Not only will she be pleasant to look at (which of course the camera will have to be more focused on the booth) but it will be funny to see how much Don loses his cool next to such a beautiful woman,

Smokers get pneumonia in far greater numbers than the rest of the population.
Although I wish you better health, I'm enjoying your absence. Wally and the Air Guitar are your best work, and that ain't saying much.

Actually smokers get pneumonia more when they STOP smoking. as the cilia in the bronchus recover from the nicotine the become more sensitive to infection because of the mucus buildup. Jerry stopped smoking a little while ago and I'm not surprised that he has pneumonia again.
To Jerry: glad you quit smoking. this is tuff right now, but in the end you'll breathe better and you'll have less shortness of breath too. Miss you in the booth, but can bear it until you are truly ready... Laura, RN

How about sending a message to Jerry's Twitter account, his house, his workplace?

Sometimes it's really easy to see why other cities' fans hate us so much. There's just a basic lack of intelligence at work here.....

  1. Jerry take your time...we don't miss your shtick at all. We don't care about Wally, air guitars, restaurant info or any of the other stupid non-baseball stuff you constantly discuss. You actually bring Orsillo performance down to your level.

Buck Martinez was excellent in the few games I caught on TBS and his knowledge and game insight makes watching a pleasure. If we could have him permanently, that would be a major score. You were good for years, but your time was over long ago and your commentary destracts us from the game itself.

Posted by Paul Justin May 4, 09 10:43 AM
  1. Take whatever time you need. Your replacements stink. But I'd rather get you better than lose you twice. So get better, come back. Go Sox!

Posted by MrCantBelieveIt May 4, 09 10:46 AM
  1. I agree with Lew at #27:
Baseball talk should dominate the broadcast, not silly discussions about Wally, air guitar and RemDawg merchandise. Jerry and NESN need to listen to a real broadcaster like Buck Martinez who provides insightfulness, game strategies and pure baseball talk. Orsillo is actually much better when he doesn't get caught up in Remy's antics and I thought the two of them together were excellent. It's not all about you Jerry!

  1. I must be the only one who really enjoyed the games without Remy this weekend? It was nice to hear the announcers actually talk about the game for a change. Remy drags Orsillo down to a low level....you can really see that Orsillo is pretty good without Remy around.

Posted by Krinbot May 4, 09 01:52 PM
  1. You and Don are so much a part of what makes the Red Sox so important to all of Red Sox Nation. I realized this when I moved here to Florida 3 years ago. I got the MLB Extra Innings package but it is not as enjoyable unless they are using the NESN feed. You and Don give the game what none of the other guys can compete with, the baseball stats and player info is given in just the right doses so that it does not compete with the ation on the field.......and if its a slow moving game you two sure do make a great comedy team....(kind of like Frick & Frack). I look foward to seeing you back in the booth and feelin' good.

How about a little respect for the the real values behind the game and a little less concern with your pocket book. I mean......jeeeesssh! As for your pneumonia, please start smoking again and smoke often.
Aww c'mon. You know I'm just joshing you.......get well soon little guy. Hey, did you see the picture of the president of France standing on his tippy toes in the photo with the Obamas? What a hoot!!

  1. Jerry, I too have had a similar illness,(pneumonia and infection) all fall & winter long. I see my Dr. weekly as I cope wondering... how the hell did this happen to me ? Some days, you wonder how ya gonna get the strength to even get out of bed. let alone put on a 'Happy Face" & talk baseball. Yet, you've done it RemDawg. For you to go public,as you have, really helps me MORE than ever.
For some reason I thought >I was the only one as I seemed to have 1 good day only to be followed by 3 or more bad ever since a family trip to Ct. late last Aug. I can barely remember the Holidays. Thanks for going public I really thought i was ALONE & going crazy. GET WELL Jerry, my prayers are w/ you.
last for so long.My prayers r w/ you.

  1. Jerry makes the games enjoyable. When the score gets lopsided (one way or the other), that's when the best of Don and Jerry happen! The telephone receiver in Jerry's pants was one of my favorites.
Until Jerry gets back (soon I hope), the color announcers need to quit talking so much. Your mindless chatter is awful. I turn the sound down so I don't have to listen.

  1. Feel sorry for Jerry not because he's sick, but because Dave Campbell isn't going to be hawking RemDogs and RemShirts and RemBabyCarriages and RemDominos and RemHats and RemDogs, a new designer breed of dog.

Who will sell now that the advertising machine that is Jerry Remy is sick?
Oh ya....Jerry has learned how to TWITTER
