New England Sports Network has announced Jerry Remy, the beloved color commentator of NESN's Red Sox telecasts and president of Red Sox Nation, will be taking an indefinite leave from the broadcast booth to recover from cancer surgery, which he underwent late last year.

"I want to focus on completing my recovery,'' Remy said in a report posted on NESN.com, "so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions.”

Remy joined NESN in 1988 and has teamed with play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo since 2001. Red Sox studio analyst and Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley will join Orsillo in the booth during the remainder of the team’s current homestand against the Indians, while studio analyst Dave Roberts, the former Red Sox outfielder and postseason hero, will provide color commentary during the team’s West Coast road trip May 12-17.

There has been no decision about Remy's replacement in the booth beyond that date.

"Jerry is beloved, and on behalf of everyone in Red Sox Nation, I want him to know that he is in our thoughts,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said. “We will sorely miss him in the broadcast, but the most important thing is that he takes all the time he needs to recover.”

A former smoker who underwent surgery for lung cancer late last year, Remy had expected to return to the booth this season, but an infection and a subsequent case of pneumonia forced him to miss most of spring training.

“I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children,” Remy said.

  1. Get well Jerry! And smokers, c'mon. I've seen 2 people die from lung cancer now and it is not pleasant... they withered away to almost nothing before they passed. You don't want that to be you! It makes your teeth and breath gross, so kissing you is like licking an ashtray. Nobody wants to do that. Stinks up your clothes, etc. How about now being a good time to quit?

  1. From another lung cancer survivor - wishing you a good recovery. Lung cancer IS survivable. And just to be clear - smoking is a huge risk factor, but there are many other risk factors, including genetics. Over 60% of new diagnoses of lung cancer are former smokers (like you Rem!) or never smokers.

Eck is doing a nice job, keeping your seat warm. But we need the RemDawg back in action. So get healthy, man!

  1. Rem,
Thank you for sharing your diagnosis with the public. Lung cancer has such a stigma that many people are ashamed to admit they have it. Although smoking is the No. 1 risk factor, most (65%) of the people diagnosed have either quit smoking already (50%) or never smoked at all (15%). In fact, more never-smokers die from lung cancer in the U.S. than from ovarian cancer or AIDS. I was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005 and had a bilobectomy. I quit smoking 30 years ago. I hope more former smokers will realize they remain at risk for developing lung cancer even decades after quitting. As awareness is raised, perhaps there will be screening or early detection for the No. 1 cancer killer of men and women. I wish you the best recovering from your thoracotomy and hope there is no more cancer. God bless. Dusty Donaldson

Stop it!!! Just think and stop it!!!
You do not want to go though the pain and suffering of the "cure".
I was on a feeding tube for 4 months...it's not worth any of the so called pleasure you think you get from the butts. Stop and live!

  1. Jerry Remy, After reading all the comments above, I have this to offer. I grew up in Boston (Malden) and now live in WPB Florida. Once cable tv offered a package to watch NESN and Red Sox baseball, I paid the fee, which was the same time I introduced my girlfriend (now wife) to Red Sox Nation. I took her and my Grandfather to a game a few years ago. I bring this up because he passed away from lung cancer last year. My wife and I love your broadcast and I am sure my Grandfather does too. My daughther who is 2, cheers for our team and we plan to make a trip this summer to Boston, see family and you in the broadcast booth.

  1. Jerry, Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but THANK YOU for letting the public know that you are battling lung cancer. Many are ashamed to admit that they have lung cancer because of the stigma associated with the disease, but no one deserves lung cancer regardless of their smoking history. This disease has been over looked and under funded which attributes to its dismal statistics. On 11/5/09, Lung Cancer Alliance of MA, will be holding the 3rd Annual Shine A Light on Lung Cancer Vigil, where the top of the Prudential Building will be lit. We would love for you to be a part of the evening to raise awareness about lung cancer and to educate the public. We wish you a full recovery.

Fight like you've never fought before. God Bless you and your family. You will get through this and when you are ready I can't wait to see you back on NESN where you should be. 1. Get well soon Jerry, WE MISS YOU. Just wondering what makes a kid smoke that first cigarette. He is obviously not addicted. I guess they need to feel cool or want to be different, whatever MAKES NO SENSE. They need to educate them better from an early age, as with drugs. Tell them and show them the consequences and add up the expense of smoking even 1 pack a day for 50 years. You could probably buy a new car with the savings from not smoking.

  1. 99% of the posts have been good nature get well wishes as it should be - it's really not the time to mention personal preferences for a replacement in the booth or a critique of Jerry as a broadcaster as some have done. That said, we will miss your analysis RemDog (check out Jerry's excellent book: "Watching Baseball - Discovering the game within" if you think it's just about the laughs) and of course your humor that makes even the slow and lopsided games fun. You are a great guy to watch a game with and the Nation hopes you are back and healthy soon. Best to your recovery.

  1. My sincere best wishes for Remy's speedy recovery. Hang in there! I am a lifelong never smoker who is a 2 1/2 year survivor of stage iv lung cancer. Statistics say that my chances of being alive in another 2 1/2 years are only 1/2 of 1%. Lung cancer claims the lives of smokers, former smokers and never smokers, and it claims them at an alarmingly high rate. Lung cancer kills more Americans than breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and liver cancer COMBINED! Because of the smoking stigma, lung cancer research funding is deplorably insufficient. Levels of lung cancer research funding are a fraction of research dollars for less deadly cancers. I hope Remy and the Red Sox Nation will do their part to help to destigmatize lung cancer and promote lung cancer research. . Many cancers are lifestyle cancers. No one deserves lung cancer or any kind of cancer. Please help spread the word!

  1. What a lucky , lucky man you are Mr. Remy , and of course , classy as usual. To share with all of us that you have been presented with a temporary bump in the infield , one that you'll handle with the usual grace and flair that we've come to know so well. You are fortunate to take this test where no better treatment or care for cancer patients can be found , right in your own back yard , the "City of Hospitals". And show no fear , there's a boy named Jimmy waiting to take you by the hand to walk you through the process and help you understand that everything will be fine. With all the time you have given of yourself raising funds for these hospitals and children's charities and cancer research and treatment you'll actually have the doctors and hospitals fighting amongst themselves for the right and priveledge to treat you and care for you. And without charge of course. The Red Sox had a very famous second baseman back in the 60's and 70's , Mike Andrews , he's gonna be there to help you out too , after all , second basemen have to stick together. Doesn't hurt that he's the President of the Jimmy Fund either , c'mon people , open your wallets and call in a donation in Jerry's name. You know you'll also have a few guys like John , Tom , Larry , and Theo rooting for you and contributing in any way they can. And don't worry , if you get tired , Papi will carry you on his back. What a lucky , lucky man to have so many friends and have so much hope. Please get well Jerry , you mean so much to so many. Inspire us one more time.

  1. Thank you, Jerry, for sharing the news of your illness with your fans. The strength of Red Sox Nation will help heal you! You're in GREAT hands in Boston and I'm wishing you strength and good health as you continue towards your recovery. My Mom had lung cancer 1.5 years ago and I know what a scary diagnosis it can be - especially when one feels guilt from smoking. Please, don't blame yourself! No one with lung cancer should ever feel guilt or shame about their illness, but sadly many people do because of this ridiculous idea that it's a "self-inflicted" disease. There are plenty of smokers who live to be 90 years old and 15% of lung cancer patients never smoked. Not one cigarette. (50% are former smokers like you and my mom.) Yes. Smoking is a bad habit and I commend you for trying to educate people about the dangers. But you quit - which is one of the hardest things in the world to do. And now, you have another mountain to climb. You conquered that beast - and you can conquer this one too! Keep up the fight and we'll be right here with you, every step of the way!

Others have also speculated that it was probably cancer on Boston.com and sonsofsamhorn message boards. Remy was a longtime smoker even coninuing to smoke during NESN commercial breaks.

We all are pulling for you and your family in every way possible that this event in your life becomes but a small bump and that you recover fully. Funny thing is that I truly believe people all over this nation care about you because you have given that back to them and they can feel it through your words and actions.

We will miss you during your time away but you and your family will always be in our thoughts. Now and forever.

I am a 62 year old man who has never written to a newspaper or called a talk show. However for the first time in my life I felt I had to communicate in this manner! You see my wife has breast cancer, which was discovered in January and my daughter has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It has been very difficult as you know, however my escape from this world of reality was listening to you. Your attitude and sense of humor was an outlet for me to get through the day. For that there are no thanks that could match what you have given to me. Please get well soon! You are needed by me and all of Red Sox Nation. God bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember growing up and listening to "Hawk" Harrelson call games. If the Sox were losing he'd get so depressed, I'd feel like krap and turn the game off. Jerry just cracks a joke and gets Don laughing uncontrollably. I'll even watch games where they're getting killed just beacause he makes it so entertaining.

    Get well!

Both you and Don make the games so much more enjoyable (even when the Red Sox are not winning). I think the two of you are so fair and impartial to other teams and players...you're great! 1. Jerry, thank you for speaking out about an otherwise silent killer, lung cancer. Often those who are victims of lung cancer, remain silent about their disease from feelings of shame or guilt imposed by an undeserved stigma. Even though everyone is at risk for lung cancer, (worldwide it is the 7th most common cause of cancer deaths among never smokers) there is little education about all the risk factors, and no medical consensus for an approved universal screening test. We wish you peace and comfort as you continue to fight this cancer that, for you, is no longer silent. And, we hope you will be well enough to consider participating in the Boston Area Lung Cancer 5K Walk on 11/7/09 at Castle Island, So. Boston.

  1. As a native born Massachusetts fan and ex semi pro ball player...I grew up in New Bedford, not far from Somerset. I followed Jerry's career from the Angels to the Sox. Smoking may be cool...but its DEADLY....I have seen lots of people die from
lung cancer. Jerry is EXTREMELY lucky that this was detected early....Jerry take
care of yourself and listen to what the doctors say. Don't make the mistake to rush
back early. It's true the Sox and the fans will miss you. But when you return, they
will be going to the World Series with John Smoltz. We are rooting for you from
Atlanta, Georgia. Get well soon...my friend

  1. Hi, RemDog,

Think about your baseball career. Much like mine (which ended in college at B.C.) and Dustin P.'s, we were always told we "couldn't" because of size, speed, or whatever. Yet we did (at least, you and Dustin on the big stage). Same deal now. I'm 64 now and still trying. Just do it. You'll be fine if you believe you'll be fine. Hang tough - as you always have. Miss you big time. But, I'd rather e-mail a living hero than one who's gone to the spirit world. Come back when you're ready. You can't lose your position due to injury, you know.

  1. Dawg, I was a fan when you played and now a fan of your ability to mix relevant baseball play by play with a great sense of humor. My kids, 10 and 12 think you are the best; they love it when you and Orsillo get on a giggle fit, and to them, they have grown to believe that is the way a baseball game should be called. As a more serious fan in the past, I've taken their stance which is new to me; winning or losing, it's a game, Nothing could ever match the mix of both humor (you go, air guitar savant), but also the perspective you deliver, from one who has played at a high level. Get well. And, thank you, for your making a new generation of fans understand the technical skill of the game, but also the fun and humor that the game can have too; you bring out both perspectives with such great ease.
    Be well.

  1. Rem Dawg, my thoughts and prayers are with you. May God honor and bless you for your strength and courage to take this difficult time in your life and use it to bring the very important and influential message to the youth of the Red Sox nation! My heart appreciates what you are going through and your dedication to the youth. Having worked at SSH&E at South Shore Hospital, we recently lost a wonderful co-worker to lung cancer. In addition, my son is a passionate baseball player at UMass, he too has strength and courage and compassion for the youth of America. You are such an influence on him that he nicknamed his new nephew in WA, Cdawg (Christopher). Just as I cheer on South Shore Hospital's upcoming opening of our new Cancer Center , so too do I cheer you on in your endeavor to sway the youth to open their eyes and hear your plea to them..RED SOX NATION...it is a wake up call to heed their strength and courage as you have done. Thanks Remy....Thanks Remy, from a grateful mom! Colette

God Bless. Miss your great sense of humor. Maybe a meal at Luigi's will put a smile on your face

  1. In the past we’ve prayed for the Sox to win the World Series which seems irrelevant now.

The Boston Red Sox and Jerry Remy are synonymous!

RemDawg you are in our thoughts and prayers…..

  1. Jerry, please get well soon. I've been a fan since your playing days and I really miss listening to your Sox broadcats. Its not the same without you. Your many years associated with the Sox have earned you legend status.

  1. Dear Jerry, my wife and I wish you a quick recovery. Living in Rochester, NY, we watch the Red Sox on MLB.com so we get to see NESN and all other play by play announcers and commentators from teams that Sox play. We have come to appreciate the sophistication, knowledge and humor that sets Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo apart and in a class by themselves. Jerry, hope to get you back soon. Red Sox nation (well, diaspora) here in Western New York misses you very much.

  1. Dear Jerry:

Through the years I have watched you play & listened to you in the booth. You have added so much to the game. I have laughed w/you & Don (hysterically at times). I wish you a speedy recovery-the games are not the same w/out you.

  1. I have been trying to quit, to hear what has happened to you makes me more committed to doing it. It is the hardest thing to quit and the worst for you. My father recovered from Lung Cancer and he lost 1/3 of a lung, he was a heavy smoker who did quit so I will pray you have the same positive results.

We all miss you, it isn't the same without you and I really think it is affecting the team, everyone is worried about you because your situation is real life and baseball, will wonderful, is just a distraction from real life.

  1. Jerry: Even though I've been a diehard Yankee fan for 60 years, now's not the time for baseball rivalry talk. Your good health is more important than any baseball game. God will bless you and make you well again. You do a fine job announcing for the Red Sox. Regards, Bruce Whittles, Glastonbury, Connecticut

  1. Red Sox broadcasts are just not the same! The humor and "fun" are missing....GET WELL SOON REM-DAWG! Coming from a Yankee fan, actually a '70's baseball fan (my wife is the Red Sox fan), I have to say I do enjoy the broadcasts with you & Don. Great stuff....continue the fight and get back in the booth soon!

  1. Dear Jerry,
Very concerned about your absence from the Sox games. My husband and I both miss your commentary and wish you a speedy and healthy return to your booth. Michael and I have been pulling our hair out trying to figure out what throwing some "cheese" means and getting a "can of corn." They should feed Dennis during the games, I think he's hungry or something. We also appreciate his filling in for you, Thank you, Dennis E. from D.S., Peacham, VT.
