You won't have to decide between the Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox tonight, because the local nine will be taking the field for a 3:35 p.m. start today at Angel Stadium, where the Red Sox and Angels will square off in the rubber game of their three-game series.

We'll have lineups, pregame updates, a live game chat with the Globe's Amalie Benjamin and Adam Kilgore, game photos, and more this afternoon on Boston.com.

Righthander Brad Penny (3-1, 6.90 ERA) will take the mound for the Red Sox today. In his longest outing of the season, Penny pitched 6 1/3 innings against the Rays on Friday at Fenway, giving up eight hits and three runs in the Sox 7-3 win. On April 11, Penny gave up five hits and allowed three runs in six innings work in a 5-4 win over Los Angeles.

The Sox will have Dustin Pedroia returning to the lineup this afternoon to help bolster an offense which has gone 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in the series.

For the Angels, it's righthander Earvin Santana on the hill. Santana (sprained elbow) will be making his season debut for Mike Scioscia's squad after making two rehab starts with Triple-A Salt Lake. The 2008 All-Star went 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA last season and is 1-2 with a 5.83 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance against the Red Sox.

  1. I've got it!

Papi - since you're so sensitive to all the negative nabobs who are wondering when you'll start hitting for power, I've got the perfect solution -- YOU tell US when we should start worrying about your power outage.

If you don't have a home run before June, may we worry? If you have 4 home runs in August, may we worry? If you finish the season with 11 home runs, is that bad, Papi? Should Tito and the Red Sox stick with you for another year so you can show us how you'll get it going at some point? Even if it takes until 2010? Because if you ever got traded, you'd really have to show us what all of our negative impatience cost us, huh.

I mean, pardon all of us for wondering about your current display of ineptitude. We don't want to 'attack' you with all of this 'negativity.' ... We'll just wait. How's that? And you can tell us when we should start worrying.
For now... you're so amazing, Mr. Ortiz. We believe in you. Go get 'em. Tonight's the night, Papi, we can feel it.

    Thanks.

  1. Where are the lineups?

  1. Memo to Theo: Time for a few repairs: 1. Insert Dice-K into the rotation; move Masterson to long relief; return Jones to AAA. 2. Send Papi to minors or Ft Myers to "get healthy"; bring up Carter to DH. 3. Trade Delcarmen and Penny for one or more of the following: SS, power DH, catcher; insert Bucholz into rotation, move Wake to relief.
The market is hot for starters and relievers. Penny is now throwing at 92-95 and showing no pain. Delcarmen is already viewed as a potential closer. The two of them combined could get us the talent we need to fill our obvious holes.
We can't go much longer without a DH and a SS.

  1. sure, hope for the 2 teams currently in exciting playoff series to lose so we can "concentrate" really hard on a team with about 125 games still left in the regular season. fool.

  1. The sox have 3 players batting below 230 in there starting lineup. While I might understand sticking with vets who have performed well in the past, isn't it time to give another player a shot at first base while Youk is on the disabled list? Surely, the sox have someone in Pawtucket who can play first and hit over 200!
