Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff June 30, 2009 03:33 PM

The Red Sox today placed Mike Lowell on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip strain (retroactive to June 28), recalling Jeff Bailey from Triple-A Pawtucket and inserting him into tonight's lineup:

1. Julio Lugo, SS
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. Jason Bay, LF
5. David Ortiz, DH
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Rocco Baldelli, RF
8. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
9. Jeff Bailey, 1B
SP -- John Smoltz, RHP

  1. You've got two third basemen listed there...

Boston.com: Good catch, Duck ... we've made the fix. Bailey is on first tonight.

  1. Obviously the motor oil they injected into his hip didn't quite get the job done.

  1. Duck is always on the job.

  1. Ohhhh come on ! Lugo again? Are the Sox just showcasing him ...or what ? If I were Smoltzie I would be objecting to the lack of defense. I am sure Brad Penny had his fill of this guy !

  1. I thought they were going to wait until Thursday to decided if Lowell should go on the DL. I hate it when he does not play. Well I hope this will help him to come back healthy and ready to go for the rest of the season.

  1. This line-up really highlights the importance that Lowell brings to the Sox. Wow - what a lack of pop!

  1. Jeff Bailey is to Francona what Beets Bailey was to Zimmer.
This guys is awful and was not even hitting in Pawtucket.
He must have compromising photos of Theo and and Tito.
Hoped I had seen the last of his .188 average this year!

  1. Haven't we all had our fill of Lugo??

  1. Bailey AND Lugo... good sportsmanship giving Baltimore a fighting chance. Must be a lefty pitcher for the O's.

  1. Can someone please explain why Lugo is batting LEAD-OFF???

  1. I guess Drew didn't play well last night.

  1. I think the Sox are both showcasing Lugo (there has been recent talk that the Reds might be in need of his bat and if we are going to release him anyway and we would have to eat the money, why not get him someplace where we can at least save the major league mininum from the total owed to Lugo and he is a nice guy, so we want him to get a job) and the need for the lead off guy of which Lugo can be one and Green can't really (and has been pressing a little lately). And maybe Tito is thinking, lets have Smoltz go through the exact same thing Penny did and Smotlz will be good for us like Penny is.

  1. Lugo is no good Tito Greene is so much better Come on. dustin should bat first or even JD. Drew that was a pretty darn good line up

  1. Not to change the subject, fellow Sox fans, but if you look in the rear-view mirror, you will see the TB Rays for the first time this year. They're on a roll (six straight after beating Halladay last night), and any body who thinks the Janks are the only ones to be concerned about had better think again. These guys are good, they're young, and now have Kazmir back looking good. Watch out!

Too bad about Mikey...what a great guy to have on your team. Great clutch stick, terrific teammate and leader, and the highest career fielding percentage of all time at third base (the immortal Brooks Robinson is second).

  1. That is not plan wrong tito

  1. Looks like the "C" team going tonight. Hope the Oreos don't give Smoltzy a problem tonight, because it looks like he's not going to get much run support.

  1. Can we stop starting Lugo?! And Leading off!! Green got to some balls last night that Lugo would have been nowhere near. And Drew rips the cover off the ball against the O's this year - Keep him playing. I don't get this.

  1. Have to agree with Fultzy. Smoltz is trying to rebound from a bad first outing and a long rehab and they short change him on the defense behind him.

  1. Lugo??? Again??? why???

  1. I have as much personal and professional respect for Mike Lowell as I do for any ballplayer I have seen in my 37 years of watching baseball.

He's a warrior, a winner and a great, great teammate.

Get well soon, Mike. We'll see you when you return.

  1. wtf? bailey? he must have pictures of someone in the red sox organization on a farm somewhere. this is the best we can do as a 1B replacement. seriously, at least carter can rake. why can he not play 1B for a little while???

Posted by ryan June 30, 09 05:18 PM
  1. Drew was just starting to heat up and Tito's already icing him? Enough with the Lugo auditions. Just get rid of the guy already.

  1. I can see The Sox resting players at this time but why Bailey at first?? He should have not been brought up!! play Kotsay until Lowell comes back....... He is an emergency player

Posted by kachas June 30, 09 05:26 PM
  1. Remember, they're only playing the O-rioles...

Posted by HubbDave June 30, 09 05:28 PM
  1. Do you people expect Nick Green to play every night? For once, I don't mind Lugo in the lineup. Gives a chance to showcase him for a potential trade and also a chance for Nick Green to catch some rest.

Usually Tito likes to over-rest his players, but I agree with this call. Perhaps with Lugo in the lineup, he didn't need to include another weak bat in Bailey.

Posted by Kristen June 30, 09 05:31 PM
  1. Weakest lineup possible.

Posted by Mattski June 30, 09 05:31 PM
  1. You call yourselves baseball fans? Lugo is in the lineup to give him practice. Nick Green has done a great job over the past month but if he gets injured we'll be forced to throw Lugo in the mix... meaning he should get out there and get in some live batting / fielding. Green also needs a day off once in a while.

Posted by Jeffrey June 30, 09 05:33 PM
  1. So JD Drew goes nuts last night leading off... annnnnd tonight we go with Lugo??

How is he still playing in the major leagues seriously?

Posted by Bobby Jones June 30, 09 05:33 PM
  1. Lugo
    Batting .294
    Get with it people

    Posted by sox8 June 30, 09 05:46 PM
  1. Why not put Kotsay at first? Am I missing something? Part of the beauty of that guy is you can put him almost anywhere. If they're going to showcase Lugo then they better leave him in because this on again off again crap isn't going to do the Sox any good, frankly it isn't doing him any good either. Oh forget that, just leave Green in he's proven himself and he's young and healthy enough (knock on wood) that he should not need a "rest".

  1. why is Lugo leading off. Switch him with Ellsbury.

Posted by Matthew Schell June 30, 09 06:33 PM
  1. Why lugo in at S.S Green is alot better player there and why Baldelli at First Kotsay is better

  1. We gonna need great pitching with the lineup being trotted out there the next week or 2...GOD THEO ! Bailey.Lugo,Rocco,Kotsay...SERIOUSLY....With all that talent sitting in the off season hot stove just waiting for a pay cut..The largest bunch of free agents ever and at bargain basement rates..And you get 6 hurt guys at a TRUE discount to save dollars! Saito.Smoltz,Rocco,Brad,Josh Bard and so and so. Oh, I know a Joe Schmo off the street don't know Jack.Well wern't you some fantasy wunderkind that crunched numbers ,But common sense? I been tellin' you for 6 months.upgrade this team, the oldest in A.L . Tek,Lowell , Nancy, all aged.A blind man could see it! Sad when the dropout of life knows more than Theo.

  1. Why not have Youk back at first, Green at short and someone from the Pawsox at 3rd? Never mind, Bailey will probably be dropped from the 40 man roster if Sox make a move.

    Posted by Mike M June 30, 09 06:58 PM
  1. #23 - Ryan - great call. Why not Carter? Jeff Bailey stinks. Major league pitchers can get him out with low breaking stuff. Bailey isn't exactly Don Mattingly with the glove at 1B, either.

Posted by KF June 30, 09 07:32 PM
  1. Lugo showed again why Tito plays him-yeah, he sucks in the field, but he gets base hits and scores runs. Get well soon Lowell-please.
