Penny fires back
PHILADELPHIA – Brad Penny responded with a verbal brushback to Yankees manager Joe Girardi’s assertion that Penny intentionally hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch, saying Girardi should worry about doing his job and not about how Penny pitches.
“I don’t give two f---- what Joe Girardi says,” Penny said. “I’m coming inside. I don’t care. Anybody can say that. We can say that about the time they hit our guys. I’m just trying to pitch inside. Maybe he should worry about managing and not trying to be the commissioner.
“Why wouldn’t he say that the night before? Don’t wait a day, then say it. He should worry about managing and let the umpire crew do their job.”
On Tuesday, Yankees reliever Jose Veras hit Jason Bay with a pitch in the sixth inning, which marked the sixth consecutive game the Yankees had hit a Red Sox batter. Bay’s plunking was the 11th of the series this season, and nine of the batters were Red Sox. Penny’s inside fastball off of Rodriguez’s elbow made the tally of hit by pitches in the series Red Sox 9, Yankees 3.
"Penny's control was pretty good, and I thought it was on purpose," Girardi said Friday. "You know, that's all part of baseball, I guess. You know, we hit Bay, and I know Jose did not hit him on purpose. I mean, Jose has struggled with his control. But things like that happen. You know, you expect something could happen in return."
On May 6, following a game in which Yankees starter Joba Chamberlain hit Bay, pitching coach John Farrell intimated in a radio interview that the Red Sox were upset at the continued plunkings. Chamberlain has a reputation for throwing inside at Kevin Youkilis.
“Those things aren't forgotten,” Farrell said May 6. “We know that there's a history there between the pitcher in New York and our guys here, so, not to say that he was specifically out to do that, but I think history speaks for itself. And we've got a number of games left with these guys.”
Penny hit Rodriguez in the first inning of Thursday night’s 4-3 Red Sox victory, on a fastball with Derek Jeter on third base. Penny’s first pitch to Rodriguez also zipped inside.
“I’m going hard in,” he said. “I don’t care if I move his feet. I have a plan, and I stick to it.”
In the wake of the Red Sox 8-0 start against the Yankees this season, Penny’s strong response to Girardi adds to the recent string of barbs between the teams. Late Thursday night, owner John Henry posted a tweet proposing the “MT curse,” a play on Mark Teixeira’s initials and his lack of a victory over the Red Sox with the Yankees.
Teixeira responded the next day, calling the post “very silly” and asking why he should worry about a “70-year-old man.” Henry is 59. Henry tweeted again later, saying "I hope I didn't hurt Mark's feelings!"
The Red sox next play the Yankees on Aug. 6, the start of a four-game series in Yankee Stadium.

Liking Penny a bit more every day. The Sox have got to be wondering if they really want to trade him.
Also noticing that it doesn't take much to get under Mark Texeira's skin, just like it doesn't take much to get into A-Roid's head. File that away for use another day.
Penny is absolutely right here. I did not hear Tito pissing and moaning when Joba "#$#@@^% Face" Camberlain drilled Jason Bay between the numbers (after Bay hit a home run off him the AB before). Joe G needs to shut his cry hole.
Amen Brad!!
Welcome to Red Sox Nation Mr. Penny. I hope you're around for a long time. This has Dirt Dog written all over it.
Penny is the man.
Girardi should shut up and try to manage his 2nd place ball club.
I'm thinking that Penny needs to stay around!
Girardi doesn't belong at this level. A manager who did wouldn't be talking about the pitch or intimating anything. Players take care of the BS on the field and my only surprise is that it didn't happen sooner.....
Oh, and if Leigh Texiera's husband had John Henry's money he/she could throw their's away....
Nice rain delay flavor.. The net version of Ned Martin and Curt Gowdy. Or, if you got KDKA, the Pirates Bob 'the gunner' Prince.
Penney is one tough dude and I to hope he sticks around.
Don't F***ing trade Penny!
Brad Penny: Old-school haircut...old-school approach!
I love it.
And John Farrell is Baseball's best pitching coach...by a mile!
Nice, the guy defends himself from Giradi's comments and now he's an indispensable pitcher. Hell, we even got an over-used "dirt dog" reference. What's next, Lugo calls A-Rod a sissy and instantly has his number retired?
"Red Sox Nation: making Red Sox fans look like uneducated fanboys since 2004."
And why hit Alex. Was he the one who pitched the ball? Hitting Alex was to prove a point and all baseball world knows it. If he would have hit Gardner it could have slipped by as just a badly pitched ball.
Dear IH8RSN we've been fans of the Sox long before '04.
IHRSN, Typical Yankee fan. A-roid can't get his fat azz out of the way of a pitch & he's being thrown at? May the Yankees be cursed for as long as their fans are as whiny & nasal as they are. ;-)
Penny! Awesome!
Let's keep this guy and get rid of Dice K!!
"Nice, the guy defends himself from Giradi's comments and now he's an indispensable pitcher."
No, it's because he shut down the Yankees and displayed grit. Try to keep up, you're embarrassing yourself.
why hit Alex? WHY NOT?
When Bay got hit, Tito didn't whine. Girardi barks like a crazy dog. That's why Tito's got two rings and Girardi got none.
IHRSN - are there coyotes in your neighborhood?
"Yankees Win, Yankees Win!" - making Bronx Bums seem like Bozos since whenever.

Try again, life long Sox fan, but nice bad assumption. I just happen to have a distaste for overly emotional, uneducated, fanboys. You know...the kind of yahoos who have love affairs over an average, trade bait, pitcher simply because he makes a defensive comment directed at Girardi. It's part of the embarrassment that is "Red Sox Nation".

Maybe John Henry needs to grow up. And i'm a Sox fan.
"I just happen to have a distaste for overly emotional, uneducated, fanboys"
You just happen to be an insecure troll who needs to post on a Red Sox blog to feel good about yourself. You're part of the pathetic, worn-out joke that is "Yankee greatness".
Actually you don't bother me, I'm having a good laugh at your expense. Like watching the clowns run around at the circus. No reason you can't have a good laugh too, though. How about a joke: "How many pop flies have to be dropped for the Yankees to win a game?"
IHRSN - you're embarrassing yourself as its clear you know nothing about baseball. Either you're a fraud or a Yankee fan trying to get a taste of glory following Boston sports.
Sox fans aren't enamored by Penny because he hit Arod, its because he can flat out pitch and you don't trade an asset like that. So, shut your pie hole before someone throws high and tight on you.
Maybe all the Yankees fans trolling on this post need to go back and worry about the moron that made their new stadium a wind tunnel.
Jeez...lighten up, dude...
"an average, trade bait, pitcher"
You mean the an average, trade bait, pitcher who shut out the Yankees the other day?
I like this guy. Let's keep him and send DiceK to the pen....
Also, what is Teix talking about? Henry's was a good-natured joke. Please, MT, you already answered him by your response.
"Chamberlain has a reputation for throwing inside at Kevin Youkilis."
Adam, I hope you meant this tongue in cheek. Chamberlain NEVER through inside to Youk, HE THREW AT HIS HEAD!!!!!
Two successive head high throws are not what I would call inside pitches and THESE are what he is known for.
And we've got a number of games left with these guys.”
looks like farrell was pretty upset that joba hit bay, does that mean farrell doesn't belong at this level because he complained too? you guys need to read the full article before you comment
Why hit Rodriguez intentionally? It's not like he'd been doing any damage at the plate. If Penny wanted to hit somebody, he'd have thrown at Girardi.
Of course you hit A Roid. Maybe A Roid will kick Blow Joba's #$% for throwing at Youk and Bay. Joes a piece of crap...Joba's a piece of crap.
ey all of u, stop gunning on red sox nation. If a stupid yankee fan wants in, then go for it, they just become a winner! cheer up
and yes, girardi is a lil F*****, and same with joba the hut (except he weighs more than joba), but its baseball, and this stuff happens. Lets just say that the yankees are definitely no ones daddies this year.
I am a sox fan but is John Henry mildly autistic or down syndrome? Something is off about that man, cant put my finger on it
Why didn't gutless Girardi come out of the dugout and say something. Heck that Old Fart Don Zimmer has more guts than the over matched Girardi. Didn't Pettitte look ordinary today in that Yankee loss.
I have to jump to IHRSN's defense here. We're talking about a flyball pitcher who so far has pitcher his entire career in the front of the enormous Dodgers and Marlins outfield. His career era is over 4, he is overweight, and he is aging. We have a legitimate log-jam in the pitching staff, and there are other, bigger team needs.
Just because he looks good in one start and then says something confrontation to Gerardi does not make him "un-tradable". It actually makes now his peak value and best time to trade him, Just because IHRSN says something without pom-poms doe
just because the guy says one thing that isn't over-the-top in its fawning luv luv luv of TEH BOSTON RED SOX!!!! AND SAYS YANKEES SUX!!!!1111 does not make him a Yankees fan...
In fact, everyone's need to call him out on that after he says one thing (which doesn't imply any disdain for the organization or have any pro-NY sentiment) only reinforces his point that some people have no clue...Time to cue up the attacks on me claiming superiority over "my team" and assuming me to be a troll opposition fan just because I actually use my brain.
Penny better not be traded. I'm seriously warming to the guy. He's a competitive sob.
Guys! Guys! We must sympathize with our rivals. I'm sure that being 0-8 this season against the Sox isnt easy... especially when they have the inability to properly manage their own pitchers. Instead of laughing every time Chien Ming Wang couples a terrible performance with the realization that they have a much better starter in Phil Hughes, perhaps we should take a minute and remember the fact that they abandoned their long time manager, Joe Torre, for some other Joe who wasnt even able to get them to the playoffs.
John 8:2-11 "let he who is without a win (in the season series) cast the first bean ball and then b!tch about it when the Red Sox exact revenge deservingly."
IHRSN is right on, and I'm a die hard Sox fan. He/she was just commenting on the retarded "oh, he took a verbal swipe at Girardi, let's keep this dude" posts earlier. Frankly, I'm more concerned that no one else finds the fact that a 59 year old man uses freaking Twitter to trade jabs with baseball players disturbing. Twitter? Seriously? John Henry "tweeted"? Is John Henry in middle school? WTF?
A month ago everyone (OK, desperate writers of sports who work for a company going bankrupt and recently took a 1/4 pay cut) was thinking of how Penny would be traded for a decent hitter to take the spot of Ortiz.
He is becoming a Red Sox pitcher before our eyes. Why trade him? Will he wilt in the second half? Is that his history? He trusts Veritek now, so all is good and he's getting better. Put Bite-Me-K on the DL. Try the old 44 year old who started in Pawtucket the other day. If he fails (if your a Vegas person, he WILL fail so make the bet), then you throw him in the bullpen. if he's even worse (he has more of a chance of failing than winning due to the national hype), then bring up on of the fastest men on the baseball field, Bucholz (have you seen him run? Could be faster than the Navajo). If Butthole fails, send him back, take 18 off the DL, and the playoffs are her. All we need to see is who is solid and who is not. Hottest arms ride the playoff train. Weak arms go to DL/minors.
Keep Penny. He's been #3 all season! I just want to see him nail Rodriquez in his money-maker - yes, his mouth .
This back and forth is stupid, no doubt. Tweeting, lame, ageist snipes, telling on the other to the commish. It's all just dumb. That said, there's something else to it that I like. For the most part, everyone--the players about each other, the fans about the product on the field and championships taken, the management about their counterparts--talks about respect; the respect they have for their rival. But this type of overt disdain amongst individuals on either side speaks to my truest feelings about the New York Yankees. No they don't suck, but I hate 'em. It feels good to have some fight in the fight.
Penny has not simply looked good in one start. Penny has looked good in 10 of his 12 starts. He had two really bad outings (vs. Angels and Baltimore). If you will recall, in others that he lost, Penny got the outs that would have gotten him out of the bad innings, but our defense (mostly at shortstop) booted or threw it away. Give any ML team 4 or 5 outs per inning and they will hurt you. Penny has been very good, overall, and his May (4.17 ERA) and June (3.86 ERA) performances have only shown that he is getting better. As Eck says, he's had the "stinky cheese" going for him in the last 3 outings.
For god's sake...this board is full of hypocrites of all types.
Whoever is bashing Girardi and praising Joe Torre was probably saying that Torre was a piece of crap 2 years ago.
Whoever thinks that it's dirty that the yankees throw at sox players better look at the series pre-Joba because the Yankees would get hit every game and never retaliated. In fact, it is part of what made this Yankee team soft through all those years. They would just sit there and take it and not do anything back. At least they have some balls now.
Yes, Joe Girardi needs to look in the mirror too and anyone who thinks it's dirty that Arod got hit should just accept it. It's fair play and it goes both ways. His real point is (and this is where Penny is an idiot and so are all of you) that Penny should be suspended so that it appears that the league is being consistent, given that Burnett got suspended for plunking a batter a couple of weeks ago. The plunking is part of the game, but if one guy is suspended, so should everyone else.
Yankee Stadium isn't a "wind tunnel". It has been already proven that the problem is not weather but the curvature of the outfield walls in the gaps and the height of the fences. Is it something that needs to be fixed, yes, but get your freaking facts straight.
Bay and Penny are so wonderful right now but once they wear different laundry they will be the biggest pieces of crap ever known to man. That's the way things go here. It's not the man, it's the uniform. It doesn't matter that Johnny Damon, Pedro Martinez and Kevin Millar were huge parts of a world series team. They were awful awful people once they left. But it doesn't matter that Jason Varitek is the biggest philanderer in this city and screwed his wife over because he's still your captain. And it doesn't matter that Curt Schilling is a blowhard that lies every time he opens his mouth as long as the myth of the sock continues.
And by the way, Yankee fans aren't afraid to criticize their team or to still respect players that performed for the team after they leave. Arod is as criticized in NY as he is everywhere else. You can say anything you want about him...it's not any worse than what we would say. But keep in mind...it was your team that wanted him and he wanted to come here. He wanted to come here so badly that he wanted to negotiate his contract down. It was the union that stopped him. So once again, get your facts straight and don't practice revisionist history.
One more thing...Manny didn't start taking steroids after August 1, 2008. He didn't just start doing it after he left the Red Sox. Just like your captain and your papi didn't just go over the cliff performance wise due to age. I'm not saying your world series trophies are tainted...just stop this "we're the only clean team in the league" b.s.
Amazing that Girardi complains about his players getting hit on purpose when its at that stage 9 hit batters against 2 hit batters. Its 9-3 at the moment but all I care about is its 8-0 in the win loss where it really counts.
It seems these New York players forget about there own team. I see today Bruni has complained about how K-Rod acts on the mound for the Mets... maybe he should have a look at the way Joba acts before he starts talking about crap like that.
Go Sox
Girardi is yapping because he's trying to distract from the fact that the Yankees are intentionally plunking our best hitters. Look at the stats: every game they are hitting us. Most of the time, they are hitting our best players. That's something the commissioner should do something about. Jerks like Girardi should get suspended for intentionally trying to injure opposing players.
Clearly A-Roid showed what a MANLY MAN he is when he smashed in those two game-winning RBIs against the Mets Friday night.
Penny hasn't been around long enough, actually, to be shooting off his mouth, and some of the old timers are probably telling him, but nice to see our boy's got the fight.
jona, you're an idiot... look at penny's career groundball-flyball ratio before you spew more of your ignorance.
